This volume has one of the worst traitor reveals I have seen in my life. The traitor is someone we haven’t seen before and know nothing about, thus his reveal means nothing to the reader. The method they used for exposing him was through magical mind reading, which makes the reveal to feel easy and cheap. Also there is a second traitor within the same group and for some reason they don’t find him, despite having the ability to mind read each other.

After that the heroes go to the beach and the manga becomes a run of the mill ecchi comedy, full of done to death gags and misunderstandings. There is even a lot of pretense since they try to make it seem they really care about their friends and give them courage to do something right, while at the same time abandoning one of their friends back home without having done something to deserve it, and they never bother to teleport him where they are.

Our heroes head for the temple that has been hyped up to be a hundred times more dangerous than the dungeon that had artifacts capable of destroying the world. And when they get there, surprise, everyone is friendly, nothing is dangerous, and there is even a Muten Roshi clone who molests the girls. Then our heroes are fighting the strongest warriors of the place that is hyped up to be a hundred times more powerful than the artifacts that can destroy the world. And, surprise, they defeat them easily because the author doesn’t care.

And just about when you expect to see a nice fight at the end with the stronger warrior, surprise, it is stopped by a villain jumping in out of nowhere. By the way, they never explain what he was waiting for to attack all this time. The heroes needed a week just to pass the barrier, while he can bust through it in a second. Also, he has a spy amongst the shinigami captains, therefore he knew where the macguffin is for a whole week. And since he considers himself to be the strongest of the wizards, there is no excuse for why he didn’t go there for a whole week. Therefore, it was done just to subvert your expectations.

Check out more manga and graphic novel reviews @ Perspective of a Writer...

This is a review of volumes 7-8 which I read together back to back. See the plot section for my thoughts on the individual volumes.

Asta and Yuno grew up together, abandoned at the same church. They both determined to become Magic Knights... Yuno's abilities soon grew to genius levels of power and control while Asta didn't show even a spark of magic and made up for it by training hard physically. It became apparent to both when they received their grimores, Yuno a coveted 4-leaf clover and Asta an unheard of black 5-leaf clover, that they were each other's biggest competition when it came to achieving their goals of becoming the next sorcerer emperor.

TBH I didn't really like the look of the story in Black Clover vol 7... Well we did get to meet the captains as they met with the wizard king to root out a traitor among themselves. I wasn't sad to see that captain go at all... Then the Black Bulls get a secret mission and its a chance for Noelle to shine (finally some girl power)... but I wasn't too interested in all the fish stuff, I found it dull at first... but the more I read the more I enjoyed it... we got to see what some of the other Bulls can do and that was super fun.

The plot continues into Black Clover vol 8 and Yami shows off why he's a captain... I just love it when he says "Surpass your limits. Right here, right now." Hahahhha like you have control over that?! But that's the kind of leader he is... He inspires and more importantly believes in you. (I want Yami as my captain!) Enemies become allies against a member of the third eye of the Midnight Sun. Asta learns to work together with his team... And it leads to some glorious battles!

That's another thing I really LOVE about Black Clover... It's about more than just Asta or Yuno and them being badass on their own... This is about squads, teamwork and working for the common good of the Clover kingdom, not just in general since they live in the same place but on the individual level too. And I really enjoyed seeing Noelle working to break free from the mental straight jacket her siblings have put on her mind that keeps her from doing magic the way she is able to... And positive female friendship too! You go Yuki Tabata...

Needless to say I went from being underwhelmed at the start of the next arc to blown away!! The thing is that battle manga can read depressingly the same. So the mangaka really has to work hard to keep the reader on there toes, to make it different and not in a contrived way. Everything arises quite naturally in the plot and that really goes a long way for me.

The art is constantly one upping itself in Black Clover and that is true in volume 7 and 8 too. The closeups of Noelle's face as she fights a REAL opponent... I really felt like I was there and witnessing a landmark battle for her. Asta also has some mega frames... GAHHHH he just won't give up no matter what and its glorious and beautiful! When he moves in front of Noelle... really you can't blame the girl for admiring him with what she's had to deal with due to family and the crap they give her.

Black Clover vol 7-8 turns out to be just as good as the previous 2 volumes... Why did I doubt for a second? Well I really didn't realize just how passionate and capable a storyteller Yuki Tabata is but it certainly shows in these volumes... I won't be doubting again. Black Clover is my favorite shonen battle manga!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Authenticity
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tension
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Plot
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Art

Noelle! Noelle! Noelle character development!!!

Omg, I'm so happy about her development! And I'm so damn fucking excited to see her play a serious role in this arc! When I saw that they were going to an underwater temple, I was thinking, "please make this about Noelle, please make this about Noelle, please let this be where she really shines," and I was not disappointed. I absolutely fucking LOVED seeing the Black Bulls get together to cheer her on. She's had such a hard life (plus that backstory tidbit broke my heart) and I'm thrilled that she's getting a chance to make a better life for herself with the Black Bulls. But I also love that they aren't her only source of inspiration and support. Kahono's words hit hard, but they come from a place of care and support. She's wants to see Noelle succeed, but she also understands that Noelle's life depends on her learning to fight back. It was, as usual for Tabata, a small touch that makes a big difference. And Yami was awesome, pushing her forward but acknowledging her hard work. Seriously, this may be my fave group of people in manga, I just love them all so much!

The scenery for the underwater temple and the surrounding area was GORGEOUS. Tabata really does have a knack for making a setting come to life. Also, I love me a battle royale, so anytime I can get one of those I'm happy. Plus, that beach chapter was a nice break from the serious stuff, so this volume really hit every mark possible.

This was a stellar volume that I had a blast reading. I'm curious to see where the rest of the arc goes thanks to that cliffhanger, but I'm eager to find out!

Finishing up the last bit of the last arc we jump right into a betrayal and then into a training session before going underwater and begin the story. It feels very much like the bridge between two arcs. Not bad but simple. Funny at times, I love the captain, and fights are solid enough. Again, nothing great but fun shonen dumbness.

After the battle with Licht, Julius Novachrono, the Wizard King, asks for Asta’s help. The members of the Eye of the Midnight Sun that were captured earlier in the series are proving notoriously tight-lipped, due to a spell that’s protecting their memories. Julius wants Asta to break the spell with his anti-magic sword. It is soon revealed that there are traitors among the Magic Knights, so the Black Bulls are dispatched to collect a magic stone before anyone else can get their hands on it. Problem? It’s in a temple that’s located on the ocean floor, and some wicked powerful magic prevents anyone from entering. Can the Black Bulls combine their powers and make the journey to the temple?

Of course they can! Everything depends on Noelle mastering her Sea Dragon’s Cradle spell, which seems like a long shot, but she and Asta determinedly train together to get this mission accomplished. Just when it seems hopeless, and that our heroes are more likely to die than arrive unscathed at the temple, some mushy good feelings reassure Noelle that she’s not alone and friendless anymore. She is scared of her magic, and has been consistently holding back when using it, so I am curious to see just how powerful she is when she finally lets go. And with the dysfunctional Black Bulls as her new family, who needs enemies? They are still an improvement on her blood siblings, who are just too awful for words.

Once they arrive at the temple, they are greeted by the high priest. In typical shonen manga style, he wagers the magic stone on a game. If the Black Bulls can defeat his priests, he’ll relinquish possession to Yami. If they lose – I don’t wanna know what happens if they lose, because he’s kind of an perverted old fart. Besides, with Asta’s determination and everyone else’s dumb luck, what can go wrong? Haha.

Black Clover continues to entertain me, though it is far from groundbreaking. I really like Asta’s character, and Yami is likeable, too, though I certainly wouldn’t want to depend on him or any of the other Black Bulls (besides Asta). This is one chaotic group of misfits. How they even managed to get any minus stars is a mystery to me. They’d just as soon hang out at the bar, hit a buffet, or sleep than do anything even remotely heroic. And Gauche and his sister complex is just gross. Ick.

Grade: 3.75 – 4 stars

Yooo there should be a doujinshi for Luck and Magna 😂 I totally ship them 🙌

Also, wouldn’t Nozel make a great tsundere uke? I’m not a big fan of tsunderes, but if we could flip his elitist attitude, what if the fan fiction storyline was about how he fell in love with a ‘peasant’yet powerful seme?! 😍😍How exciting!

Also, I can’t wait to read the next one! The Eye of the Midnight Sun was going to interfere eventually but I was surprised and am excited to see the battle coming up.

PPS: did anyone notice the Gamemaster’s grandson, Kiato? 😲😋

3/5 Stars (%60/100)

The ending of the Eye of the Midnight Sun arc was good (the first few chapters in the volume). The Seabed Temple arc starts and honestly, it is one of the weak ones in my opinion. It is good that the author tries to power-up side characters as well but sometimes it feels very forced (it gets better in the future). After the previous volume, I found this one weaker but we'll see what happens in this arc.

This manga series is always enjoyable to read, and in this volume, we journey to the underwater temple and meet a brother-sister duo I love. Every book in the Black Clover series is a quick easy 5 star read. I thoroughly enjoy every second of reading time in this world. Can’t wait to read on!

So I know that they were going to go to an underwater temple but like it didn’t register that we’d get basically a beach episode, like I’m sitting here like “oh my god they have beaches” like just because the politics are shit doesn’t mean that the characters can’t go to the beach. Anyways this was a fun volume. Noelle got to have better control over her magic which is great as a development though I also feel like even though we’re getting pieces of her background and what she grew up hearing, I feel as though her development is kind of slow, but I also can’t say anything cuz this series is really long and maybe that’s better cuz the development develops over time and the pacing is good too.
Though for real she’s so hard on herself, like her siblings are shit really for the things they’ve said and how they see her as a person, but she is so much harder on herself because of that, so yeah seeing in this volume that she’s got people she can depend on or lean on is great development (though she still states she’s a royal and we love her for that).
Noelle being hard on herself literally put a hinderance to her improvement, but we’re getting better.
Also in the beginning of this volume there was that other magic knight William, I thought for sure (not totally) he was the traitor cuz he has been practically MIA. I’m still suspicious of him.
I’m liking the development of the eye of the midnight sun, the info dump was crazy work though, kind of hoping the delve more into the magic stones and all that. Cuz I know it’s been important since the beginning but like why? I’m so curious.

As is absolutely necessary for a battle manga, we start a "Temple Battle Royale" to pit the Black Bulls against the Underwater Temple's mages, so that all our heroes can flex their abilities again. (Naturally, Asta and Luck are both excited for the fights!) To no one's surprise, Noelle ends up battling against another girl because... that's just how Weekly Shounen Jump works. Oh, and the volume ends with the bad guys invading the Temple, as is also to be expected. Basically, the manga continues to be very generic in its plot beats, but Tabata's art is great and his characters are entertaining, so it works.

Vanessa's boobs on the cover! Vanessa and Noelle in bikinis on the cover of Chapter 57! Vanessa's boobs jumping on the next page! Noelle's boobs when she's about to drown in her water ball! Noelle's thighs when Asta catches her! Underwater Temple's priest's "boob-squeezing game"! (Vanessa's boobs! Noelle's covered boobs!)

The author does a good job of managing a big cast simultaneously by giving them clearly distinct personalities and appearances (with the exception of finral and voltia who are too similar).

The buildup to the water temple was good, with nice character progression for noelle, but the dungeon itself is a bit of a letdown so far. I would have liked to have seen more water specific trials rather than your standard magic battles. A missed opportunity.

I am sad to say this is the weakest volume since the series started. But the fact that I gave it 3 stars should tell you exactly how good this series has been since the jump. There are issues with this volume, but nothing that should make you turn your nose at. Yuli Tabata continues to weave and very interesting story with new characters. The newly introduced character isn't as good as previous, but who knows if later revelations will make this mean more to you. Still...it was pretty good!

Yami is such a proud dad… that gambles on his kids (knights) success. I mean, he literally asked the high priest to add MORE FEROCIOUS CREATURE to portal guy who wouldn’t even fight the knight he was given.

Also props to Noelle and Asta for surpassing their limits and I can’t wait to see when Noelle beats up her opponent (forgot her name but manipulative-singing lady).

Love Magna 👍🏼

“That’s right. I’m a royal. And for that very reason, we should extend a helping hand to everyone! Getting a swollen head, thinking you’re better than the rest and looking down on others is something only those with shallow hearts do. You can enjoy the festival too, Emma! Royal or noble, commoner or peasant! It doesn’t matter!! Everyone can have fun together!!” - Noelle Silva

Okay stuff, mostly in the first half. Even if the conflict and characters haven't had the time to develop properly yet, the traitor plotline is relatively interesting.

What a waste of a fun setup in the back half though. The sea temple game would've been really cool if they committed to it instead of making it a stomp.

Not even the sexy bikinis worn by Noelle and Vanessa in a beach setting will be enough to give this volume of the manga series a favorable review.

Oh, and one more thing I forgot to mention: WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO NOELLE’S FATHER?! Is he dead, or left her and her siblings, and never returned?

i really like the direction this one is going. the past few iterations felt very simple, but as the story is beginning to progress and the more the characters are being introduced within our black bulls, the multiple different plots are really becoming much more interesting.

This felt pretty subpar compared to the quality of last two volumes. There was some interesting stuff that happened at the beginning of the volume but later part of manga felt like spoiler. The ending panels ended this volume on a cliffhanger though.
