When ace high school detective Jimmy Kudo is fed a mysterious substance by a pair of nefarious men in black—poof! He is physically transformed into a first grader. Until Jimmy can find a cure for his miniature malady, he takes on the pseudonym Conan Edogawa and continues to solve all the cases that come his way.
In this exciting volume:
CONAN DREAMS OF SUSHI
At a revolving sushi restaurant, a food critic is poisoned. Who slipped cyanide into the buffet? Something's fishy about this crime, but Conan is on hand to serve up a helping of justice!
Then a man dies at a strange contest for men who share the same last name...and one of the the suspects is George's dad! And Conan joins the hunt for a drag racer called the Silver Witch who literally drives people to their deaths...
Gosho Aoyama (青山剛昌) is a Japanese manga artist. He is best known as the creator of the manga series Detective Conan (known in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom as Case Closed).
Aoyama made his debut as a manga artist with the work Chotto Matte which was published in the weekly magazine Shōnen Sunday on winter of 1987. Shortly after that, another work by Aoyama, Magic Kaito, was published on the same magazine.
I made it so far and I feel like it's too late to quit now. However, I'm starting to get so bored. Even Shinich couldn't help. I'm feeling terribly guilty about it because I love the manga and the characters. This was my first 2 stars for detective conan and hopefully the last.
This book starts out finishing up a case started in the last book where they discovered a man who had been strangled in his car while driving. The time is ticking, because Jimmy has to solve it before Anita's mixture wears off and he changes back into Conan in front of everyone.
The next case happens when a food critic is poisoned at a revolving sushi restaurant where the Junior Detective League is eating. This is followed by a murder case at what was supposed to be a television quiz show as part of a final contest for a prize. I actually solved this one myself, which pretty much never happens, so I was pretty proud of myself for that one.
The final case is about the Silver Witch who is known for racing people in the fog and leading them to their deaths. This one had a funny ending when the identity of the real Silver Witch is revealed.
I feel like this book of Case Closed had a much lighter feel to it. As always, it was a quick, easy read, with Conan showing off his amazing deducting skills and trying to guide the adults to the right answers, all while keeping his true identity a secret.
I’ve exhausted all the new mana I’ve purchased. Now I go into withdraw until I can buy some more. Why have I done this to myself...again? This manga/anime is too addictive!
Well, masih harus sabar nih nunggu sesi begitu...
I’m thrilled to be back reading Case Closed. It’s a pleasure to dive into Conan’s world again, though I’m now a bit more aware of the manga’s recurring weaknesses. Still, I’m committed to continuing—I’m eager to see how the main plot moves forward from here.
Tapi ran & shinichi so sweet banget deh disini
General Synopsis: As mentioned above, I am going to write a proper review for this soon, but I have a few books ahead of this one in the queue, so I cannot stop reading DC NOW! That's sacrilege. I have decided to read all the chapters available up to now (we are almost to 1000!) As you can see, I am totally fangirling over here and I don't care, because this is one of my favorite manga series, ever! But all of this aside, there are a few things I wanted to list so I don't need to go back and look everything up when I do finally sit down and write my fangirl review. ✌🏻
DO NOT click on the spoiler link if you don't want to read all the cases in this volume, because it will ruin it for you. On the other hand, if you're a fan like me or are looking for a certain case (and please note, these are how I have set the cases), etc. click away, that's why it's there.
Another spoiler link, so don't click if you don't want to ruin this manga. I am going to include the characters introduced or as the series continues are in this volume. Personally, I think us DC fans love certain characters more than other (yes, Heiji, I mean you!), so sometimes when we are re-reading this series (like all the time!) you might wish to start at a specific case or start when a certain character is involved.
Characters in this volume:
Personal Opinion: #1, I never call this CASE CLOSED. If you do, you're not a true fan of this series, so don't even bother reading my review or my personal opinions. I'm sorry if I offend you, but you offended me first by telling me you want to read CASE CLOSED or you just love Jimmy.
#2, as you can tell by #1, I read this online. I would never waste my money buying a manga series in english that cannot get the name correct and mess up the main characters to make it appear more "ENGLISH." I am so happy I don't run a blog and this isn't a review on Sailor Moon, #1, because I have a huge soap box tirade against DiC. I also don't think there is anything against reading something online. Comics, which is what manga are, are meant to be read and shared and sometimes paying over $10 is too much in my opinion. Plus, I read the newest chapters as soon as they are released from Japan, because I would never miss a release of DC. So this is my personal shout out to you translators from me, Thank You!
Quick recap: When teen genius detective Shinichi Kudou (Jimmy Kudo in the American version) is shrunk to a childlike form in a botched assassination attempt, he takes the name Conan Edogawa and is taken in by bumbling private eye Kogoro Mouri (Richard Moore) and his daughter Ran (Rachel), who happens to be Shinichi’s sweetheart. Conan must hide from the international crime organization that changed him, but also finds himself having to solve crimes, despite the fact that first-graders aren’t supposed to be that great at detection. See my reviews of earlier volumes for more details.
Case Closed Volume 63
In the previous volume, Shinichi had taken an experimental antidote that allows him to assume his normal appearance for a few hours–only to spend most of that time separated from his friends. As Volume 63 opens, he finally has an hour or two to spend with Ran as himself…or he would, except that they’ve stumbled across a man strangled to death while alone in a moving automobile! Can Shinichi solve the crime before he shrinks again?
Then Professor Agasa takes the Detective Boys out for sushi on a revolving conveyor belt, only to have an obnoxious food critic be poisoned right by them.
This is followed by a story that the Americanized names makes not make much sense. Genta Kojima’s (George Kaminski in the dub) father is enrolled in a special televised tournament only for people who write “Kojima” with a specific set of kanji (ideograms). In the English version, it’s a contest for people who spell the name “Kaminski” that way. Conan must figure out which of the contestants murdered the organizer of the tournament and why. He’ll just hope it’s not Genta’s never before seen father!
The last story in the volume is the hunt for the “Silver Witch”, a legendary drift racer. She seems to be back from wherever she disappeared to a few years ago, and luring mountain racers into auto accidents in the fog. Has a big twist at the end!
Case Closed Volume 64
Volume 64 opens with the Detective Boys visiting Horn Rock, an isolated islet shunned by fisherfolk due to bad luck (unless you have a child on board.) They find a scuba diver there, dead of starvation, and a curious inscription she wrote. The complication this time is that they are accompanied not by Professor Agasa, but grad student Subaru Okiya, who is not in on Conan’s secret, and on whom Ai (Anita) sometimes detects the scent of the Black Organization. Is he an enemy, or is there something else going on? This is another case that you need to know kanji to solve.
After that, Kogoro Mouri is called in to help a blind heiress discover which of two scarred men is the boy who saved her life as a child. Making matters more urgent, the police believe the one who’s an impostor may in fact be the Whistling Killer one of the cops managed to scar years before.
Once the mystery of the scarred boy is solved, the story flows into the Whistling Killer case proper. The killer did several murders years ago, but seemingly comes out of retirement to kill a man who taunted him on television. Why now, and what is the significance of the song “Let It Be”?
The final chapter is the setup for a Kaito Kid story. The flashy thief has again challenged Sonoko’s (Serena) wealthy uncle by claiming he will steal something from a supposedly theft-proof safe. Or has he? The challenge letter looks wrong, and Conan smells a rat. Just who is the real villain here? Wait for Volume 64 to find out!
Of these stories, I liked the Whistling Man tale the best as it’s good and atmospheric. The two cases that rely on ideograms for clues suffer badly from the erasure of Japanese language for the American version. There’s no movement on the myth arc, other than the suspicious behavior of Subaru Okiya.
Recommended if you are a fan of the series; more casual fans may want to wait for the next volume that has actual plot developments.
Last volume a man was driving down the road dead and the story had just started as volume 62 ended. This volume picks right up where the previous volume left off. This story was much shorter than I expected it to be, but it was enjoyable and fun. The next story revolves around (literally) a revolving sushi murder case. It involved the Junior Detectives, and it is a fun one as well. I won't say it was deep, but it definitely fit the need for this volume. The next case involves the Junior Detectives and one of the three suspects in the murder is George's Dad!?! The final story deals with Detective Conan and....The Silver Witch of Fuyuna Pass! It is an intriguing story and I find myself shocked a story like this didn't appear before the 63rd volume of Case Closed!
I hadn't picked up a volume of this series for awhile, but it's good to see that it's still as enjoyable as ever. This time around, Conan has to solve a murder at a rotating sushi restaurant, possibly implicate a friend's father as a killer, and stop a drag racer of death.
These stories are quick mystery cases, usually finished in a few chapters. As a person who grew up on Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine, Sherlock Holmes, and Columbo, just to name a few, this is total catnip for me. The big question was "Are they still good?" and the answer is yes. Fun all around and highly recommended!
Solving a driver alone in a car being strangled to death, Sinichi turns back into Conan. I know the main story line is about a teenager trapped in a child's body, but I like the Sinichi stories, which are far and few. Other stories include a food poisoning mystery in a revolving sushi restaurant and Genta's father is a murder suspect while competing in a competition, as well as another car story about a phantom driver causing accidents.
