After a hair-raising escape from a dangerous planet, Jas Harrington and the rest of her starship’s crew set out for the colony world of Dawn.
Jas doesn’t know if the acting captain is being controlled by a hostile alien, or why they must go to Dawn before returning with their damaged ship to Earth.
On the new world, they discover the horrible truth of what the aliens called Shadows do to victims caught in their traps.
They discover what Dawn’s inhabitants are hiding.
They discover that the planet’s security has been penetrated.
As the Shadows draw near, Jas fights desperately to free the people of Dawn from their dark secrets. If she doesn’t succeed, no one can survive.
Dawn is book three in the Shadows of the Void space opera serial.
J.J. Green is a British-Australian science fiction author with a lifelong love of distant landscapes, intriguing cultures and fascinating places. She was born within the sound of the bells of Mary-le-Bow church in Cheapside, London, making her a bona fide Cockney, and she lived in Australia, Laos and Taiwan before returning to the UK to settle down in Cambridge.
Green’s novels weave science-based speculation with richly personal stories. Her works explore themes of environmental degradation, political conflict, mythical resonance, human resilience, and the ethics of technology and expansion. Her characters—often strong women—navigate future worlds grounded in both scientific plausibility and mythic imagination.

This is Book 3 in the ‘Shadows of the Void’ series. I wouldn’t really recommend reading it as a stand-alone as this whole series reads rather like a soap opera with each book providing the next ‘episode’.
Dawn picks up the space travellers as they arrive on the planet ‘Dawn’ following infection with the mysterious ‘Shadows’. But are they safe on Dawn?
There’s a lot to commend this book – from action, to intrigue, suspense, and a whole host of interesting and developing personal relationships. There’s something in here for everyone, and it’s pretty bite-size so it won’t take you long to read either. For me, it provided two evenings of relaxed reading.
There are some real plot-twisting surprises in this ‘episode’ and also a great deal of promise for future instalments. It’s well written, meaning you actually care about the future and fate of the characters. This definitely keeps you reading from page to page and will definitely be enough to make me grab book 4 as soon as possible.
If you like sci-fi, if you like mysteries, if you like action and tension, then this book should satisfy your desires for a short time at least. Highly recommended even by someone who rarely reads books that are split into a series like these. Give it a go (but start with book 1).
Author J.J. Green brings us Jas's next adventure as the crew of the Galathea are ordered to orbit the planet Dawn. Dawn is the planet where they screen for the Shadows that have popped up across the the galaxy and where we meet a young man who will become apart of the crew. As Jas settles in for the examination process and after she finds that the people of this colony are more Amish in their ways. She also learns that the leader of the colony and not the governor beats his kids and probably his wife too. But the Shadows invade and take over some of the towns people and half of the shuttle base too. This is a gripping story and one that I enjoyed reading and I am looking forward to the next installment in this series.
This is now the third book in the series by J. J. Green. I just had to go on reading. Needing to know how it will go on. First i have to say, you have to read the other two book before you can read that one, to understand, what is happening.
Was their captain affected by the shadow, as they call the mysterious alien, who invaded their body and brain, making a replica of the person? They flee to Dawn, to escape the shadow. But are they save there? A treasure to read for all sci-fi fans.
As the adventure continues, Jas Harrington and the rest of the Galathea’s crew arrive at the colony world of Dawn. They discover the inhabitants are not what they were lead to believe, and none of them are safe from the Shadows on Dawn - neither the ship’s crew, the soldiers there to keep order, or the colonists. There is a side story about a young boy Jas and Carl try to help, and that turned out differently than I thought it would, with a few twists. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next to the Galathea’s crew as they continue to fight the alien Shadows.

Hmmm.....not exactly what I was expecting but it filled a gap in my reading activity nonetheless. Quite the unknown quantity, this new planet. Galactic troops stationed on it, the whole place seemingly controlled by some cult plus the threat - real or imagined - of the aliens taking everyone over. Add in the obnoxious new 'Master' of the Galathea and you've got yourself a boiling recipe for disaster. It would seem that they managed to get everyone away safely so it's on to #4: "Shadowrise."
After getting the ship moving (love the "turn it off and on" electrical rule), the gang progresses to the planet Dawn which has a way of testing people for Shadow transition.
Feeling safe, Jas and Lingiari learn about the people of the planet. They left Earth (by spaceship!) to adopt a more fundamental life praying to the Earth Mother and avoiding any technology.
What would you do if you had to land in a world for quarantine? How would you react when you discovered a culture of child abuse? Did you just see an alien you thought quarantine was supposed to weed out? Jas finds herself in a predicament of new worlds and conflicting emotions.
Arriving at Dawn, as ordered by Earth Global, it is with surprise that Jas learned that the people from Dawn are not only aware of the aliens that were rampant on the Galathea, but that they can actually test and find out who these "Shadows" are. But Dawn is not a paradise either. And what if Dawn is and can be infiltrated by the Shadows as well? Enjoy
Love JJ’s characters! They are always the same meaning their character can develop and grow but not change into someone else. That’s a mess. Let me try again. An outgoing, vibrant person doesn’t become a sullen cretin without something horrific happening.
I'm not crazy about military confrontations in sci-fi books but this author has me caring about the characters. I should have bought the whole set. these shorts are driving me crazy.
Jas and Carl are the first of the crew to be sent to Dawn's surface and submit to testing. While on planet they find out what the inhabitants are doing. Jas visits with a military officer and then something partially unexpected happens.
Jas Harrington's story continues in book #3 Dawn. As the Security Officer of the Starship Galathea that has been ordered to Dawn, Jas needs to save the colonists.
I voluntary reviewed an ARC (the first five chapters) of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I hadn't read any of the previous books or story lines to this particular soap opera, but this one was pretty interesting. You had an affected crew/space ship that had to be diverted to another place due to a problem. Once arriving at the designated place, mysterious circumstances began to appear and the story takes off from here. The writing is crisp and not mechanical, situations are logically set up and not rushed, characters are three dimensional with plenty of depth, and the action is constantly simmering in the background.
Part 3 of this series, a new planet and out of the frying pan into the fire for the intrepid crew. As easy to read and as exciting as the previous books I enjoyed it a lot.
