A twisted tale of sadistic Sorcerers and the monsters they create.

In a city so dismal it's known only as "the Hole," a clan of Sorcerers has been plucking people off the streets to use as guinea pigs for atrocious "experiments" in the black arts. In a dark alley, Nikaido found Caiman, a man with a reptile head and a bad case of amnesia. To undo the spell, they're hunting and killing the Sorcerers in the Hole, hoping that eventually they'll kill the right one. But when En, the head Sorcerer, gets word of a lizard-man slaughtering his people, he sends a crew of "cleaners" into the Hole, igniting a war between two worlds.

All mysteries lead back to the Hole! Our labyrinthine tale is nearing its end, but it’s not over quite yet. Caiman and Nikaido, Risu and the En family, and all of the embattled characters who made a miraculous recovery in our previous volume gear up fight the Cross-Eyes’ boss in a no-holds-barred battle royale! This is going to be full-throttle mayhem!

So this thing called "Hole" was made of the grudge of humans against sorcerers?

The cosmic horror in this volume was tipped perfectly in the balance of whack and normality. It feels as if Hayashida was heading in this direction from the very beginning, and there's nothing I love more than foreshadowing done right.

I bought this volume as a physical copy for myself and no-one else. I must say, I prefer the scanlation translations but there is a charm to the official translation, too.

My duty was gathering the next powerful sorcerers in one spot. Once these boxes, the symbols of my life, are all broken, it will begin.

Dorohedoro is a manga where the death of a character doesn't necessarily...well, mean that they died. Characters come back all the time, and in universe, this makes perfect sense. What I love about this volume is that characters are truly in danger of dying for good, and it's well done to take such a risky writing decision near the climax of the story.

Again, as fantastic as the previous twenty volumes. I don't think I could recommend this anymore. This is also a great manga if you love a good dark joke or two.

insane is too light of a word. this manga is off the charts. i’m so glad things are starting to piece together!! esp plot points that seemed random at the beginning actually have a very specific purpose in the story!!! very cool

I truly didn’t think watching everyone and everything come together would be so simultaneously satisfying, emotional and terrifying. Just such a fantastic story with so many moving parts!

Out of the frying pan, into the fire is pretty much the constant motto for these characters. Finally getting a deep dive into the lore and motivations!

( I am currently re-reading the series, my review will be edited later! I enjoyed all of the volumes though! :D)

Thoughts: It ended on a cliffhanger. My copy of volume 22 is still not here yet. The original copy from BD got lost so I'm waiting for the replacement. I think it's a good thing since re-reading the series ignites the hype and I'm not ready to say goodbye yet. Hopefully, I'LL BE GOOD AND READY WHEN THAT COPY COMES. edit: 4/10/2021 STILL NOT READY

Thoughts 2:0 (5/10/2021): Ai's backstory is finally revealed. We now know what the dumping lake/hole actually is! So heartbreaking yet heartwarming this one. People are starting to get closure and answers. Love the reveals. At the end of the day, communication is key, folks!
Also, I know some people are pissed that everyone is alive (BUT WHAT'S THE POINT OF JUDAS'S EAR AND NOI'S MAGIC if not to bring these people back to life?? THEY EXIST TO HEAL AND RESURRECT THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT?)

All of my Dorohedoro reviews are actually a summary of what I've read & some thoughts!
I have the memory of a goldfish.

Rating: 5 stars

Summarising with bullet points from now onwards so I can get through my re-reads faster

Spell 138: Fun in dystopia
- The sorcerers' realm is still in ruins, thanks to the neverending rain. We see Kirion gathering supplies, keeping the restaurant in order and taking care of Tanba, Fukuyama and Asuka
- Tanba shares that he used to go to Hole as a kid to practice magic. This surprised Kirion (she's definitely human)
- We see Kirion escaping from kidnappers (human children are sold as practice targets) and Tanba taking her in as a kid
- Kirion was outraged at first upon learning that her boss used to practice magic but Tanba revealed that he never did it. He said that sorcerers are not so different from people. He never felt to practice on the weak. Fukuyama and Asuka share that he has never practised on humans too. Kirion is clearly warmed by this and cried
- SHE FINALLY TALKED! She plans to check what is wrong with the sky

Spell 139: Setting up for melting down
- Shops are still closed at Hole. Only the central department store is open but ITS GONE
- There are still some sorcerers (En's staff) at the central hospital. Dr Vaux proceeded to share with them the current updates. He brought them to the pit because they didn't believe him
- Dr Vaux notices that the lake is receding and is being sucked down the centre
- Sludge seems to be slowly filling up the central department store. This killed some of the humans that are connected to the tubes
- Shin is back to normal and sees that the buildings are 'melting'. He remembers what he did to the other members of the family. He mentions that "HE" can use Shin because he's half-human ( It can control humans). Shin has an idea of what the thing actually is
- We see En preparing to attack ( DO NOT F*CK WITH EN! AAH CAN'T WAIT FOR THIS TO BE ANIMATED). He's using the mushroom doll magic again
- Kawajiri is still serving food to the devils. He sees Nikaido attached to the tubes from the window. Fujita and Ebisu reunited. Noi is still distracted by 'it' and attempts to fight
- Nikaido used her devil abilities to project her thoughts to all of the sorcerers. She advises Noi to avoid 'it' as he couldn't be defeated. She told Noi to take her friends and run. It's the only way
- All of a sudden, a mushroom doll erupted from Ebisu's mushroom head (EN IS HERE GUYS! HE'S BACK BABY!)
- Fukuyama and Asuka realises that Kirion could be human. She ventures out to find the cause of the rain and plans to stop it

Spell 140 : Evil gambling
- Obviously, everyone is happy to see En back from the dead ( even though some hated him, he kept the sorcerers' world in order and gave them food and shelter) also seeing Ebisu with that mushroom doll is a tad awkward
- The devils are surprised to see En resurrected. Chidaruma remains unfazed. The devils are betting on the strongest sorcerer. If they lose, they will be demoted to sorcerers (btw where is Haru?) Chidaruma bets that 'it' will win against the sorcerers
- Chidaruma proceeded to blind Kawajiri once again and cut both his arms off (leaving him as before). At the very last minute, he gave him his eyes back. He wonders where Haru is (EXACTLY! Where is Haru?? The fight with Nikaido x Caiman didn't happen. After she dropped Prof off, where did she go?)
- The city is melted and is filled with sludge. En is busy fighting outside of his body (via mushroom doll). Shin proceeded to move him elsewhere (to the room where all the sorcerers are) but the liquid is gradually rising and washing them away
- We see Haru flying overhead. Apparently, her creative juices are flowing so she is busy composing a song (Haru is always in her own world, isn't she? I want to know what she's like before she became devil )
- Instead of helping them, she gave En and Shin new clothes and masks. She sees the house moving (as per Chidaruma's command) and decided to get going, leaving them behind
- Nikaido channelled her thoughts onto En. She shares that 'It' is undefeatable because 'it' has rapidly evolved (it's cute that En noticed that Nikaido 'lose' weight)
- En proceeds to free Nikaido from the tubes by turning her into a mushroom (smart)
- 'It' fights with En using its tubes, chopping En's mushroom doll. The mushroom doll proceed to multiply

Spell 141: Wish of a sacrifice
- Ai mentions that the city is melting because the end is near. Prof Kasukabe tried asking for more information but Ai just advised them to keep following him
- The place is in reverse so that their footsteps don't attract 'his' attention
- Ai knows a place where 'it' doesn't (behind a ratty mattress). He starts sharing about what happened to him when he fell into the dumping lake. Prof Kasukabe grows weaker
- They arrived at the dumping lake *an illusion?* where it is pouring rain (just like the day he fell). Ai dived into the lake followed by Prof and Risu

WHAT HAPPENED TO AI
1) The lake poisonous water ate away at his body. The sludge ate his flesh and bones. That's when 'he' entered him
2) He knew that Prof wouldn't have done the operation if he weren't fighting for his life
3) They collected 8 sorcerers corpses for the operation
4) After the operation, Ai believed that he turned into a sorcerer but he was wrong
5) 'He' sense what Ai wanted and took advantage of him
6) He died because he couldn't make any smoke when he asked some sorcerers to bring him to the sorcerers' realm
7) 'He' knew this would happen so he brought Ai back on living dead day
8) The source of the rain that hurts sorcerers is him
9) Ai's body made up of dead sorcerers was 'his' sacrifice
10) The pit isn't filled with sludge. The 'sludge' is 'his' life source (weren't it filled with humans flesh & bones? and dead sorcerers? excuse me while I puke )

HOW BEAUTIFUL IS THE BIG PANEL?
"HE IS HATE AND DEATH ITSELF, FROM ALL THE HUMANS SLAUGHTERED BY SORCERERS (called it). A GRUDGE BOR FROM DEATH, STILL HUNGERING FOR MORE... HE WANTS EVERY F*CKIN SORCERER DEAD. USING MY BODY.
- He proceeds to share more about what happened to him after he died 13 years ago
So Ai is just a pawn

Spell 142 : Critical Fungus
- En mushroom doll multiplies. Tetsujo became angry at the 'boss' and calls out to a badly injured Dokuga
- Noi heals the sorcerers. Nikaido first. Noi is shocked to see her grow taller and turning more and more like a devil ( even I'm envious of the muscles )

En: Nikaido.. why are you so God-damned healthy looking?
HAHAHAHA

- Shin is still taken away by the current with En's original body (IDK where they will end up)
- Each time the mushroom dolls are sliced up, it multiplies. 'It' tries to fight En by screaming but since his true form isn't there, he isn't affected
- En gave the sorcerers protective suits made of mushrooms (like the one he used on Judas's Ear)
"I'll always protect you" thanks, dad... I mean, En /coughs
- Spores have entered 'its' body, thanks to En's magic. We see mushrooms rapidly growing inside of 'its' body. He looks like he is going to explode

Spell 143 : Birthday
WHAT HAPPENED TO AI PART 2
1) In the coffin, Ai's flesh was changing because of the surgery
2) It was the magic from the sorcerer who was pulled out of the dumping lake
3) Most of the 'fresh meat' used in the operation came from his corpse
4) The sorcerers magic was 'matter generation'. Although his magic is common and his power is below average, Ai wonders if it was a coincidence or was actually planned by 'it'
5) As the Hole's rain ate up Ai's coffin underground, his body filled with the corpses of dead sorcerers was consumed by the hole's soil
6) Nobody realised that he is on the ground. His power grew over the years fed with rain polluted by sorcerers smoke
7) He gained a will and a mission. He needed a tool to take advantage of; Ai.
8) He invaded Ai's corpse in the lake. His cursed power granted Ai's wish ( to become a sorcerer)
9) Ai escaped from his grave as if he was resurrected. He walked home but it was empty so he starts wandering the hole
10) Prof Kasukabe's clinic was gone (Ai's been dead for a few years). The hospital opened, the central department store is in the works and the living dead day started becoming a norm ( his power had increased affecting the entire hole: sorcerers reanimated as zombies once a year)
11) Ai stole a coffin and buried the empty one to replace the one that has been eaten away in his grave. He deemed that he didn't belong at Hole anymore. Ai Coleman is now 'dead'
12)His head started pounding. We see Ai growing another head; 'he' is now awake. 'His' face has a mark (cross-eyes). It's the same stuff in the dumping pond. Ai only realises it when he was in that room (the one with boxes/coffins filled with sludge). He gets a lot of nightmares
13) He woke up out of the blue one day in an apartment he had never seen. That's when he started becoming Aikawa (a low rank, who could produce a small amount of smoke). He loved being a sorcerer but the nightmares never stopped
14) He started losing his memory of becoming Ai but he knew that the dreams were real ( so I was right. Aikawa is the only one who is conscious of 'it' hence why he tried to kill himself many times)
15) Aikawa sensed 'his' hunger. He wanted more sorcerers dead (especially powerful ones). Since 'he' had granted Ai's wish (to become a sorcerer), 'he' managed to keep him quiet
16) That's when he met Risu. Becoming his partner made his goal of becoming a sorcerer real *CUTE*
- We see Aikawa hugging Risu *still in his Curse form*. He shares that he's his first and only friend and apologises for not being to help him

Spell 144 : Pushing the envelope
- We were taken back to the time when the boss killed Risu at Salmanza Plain. Dokuga asks him why he had killed Risu. He just told him to shut up and go away
- At their hideout (I think), the boss called Dokuga to tell him to stay away from his house. He said that he is there (Risu's curse magic)
- One week later, we see the boss escaping to the hole (with the help of Dokuga). He gave Dokuga a bloodied bag saying that he'll be back for it later
- The boss advises him not to attack Curse because it feeds on people's desire to kill him
- Dokuga woke up from the coma and commanded Tetsujo to use Judas's Ear on the boss, Saji and Ushishimada (you're still on his side? WAKE UP DOKUGAAA). Tetsujo told him that everyone's dead
- The boss is blowing like a balloon. En's magic can't hurt him but it can stop the flesh of the tubes (Dokuga and Ebisu is freed). Nikaido asks Noi to heal Kawajiri
- WE GET MORE BIG MANGA PANELS TOWARDS THE ENDING! THEY'RE DISTURBING BUT I CAN'T STOP STARING. SO BEAUTIFUL!! the boss is looking like me when I'm moody and stuffing my face lols. I don't look that disgusting though. I think?
- The boss started screaming again to fight En's magic but En is still not affected (his original body is with Shin). The boss is going to blow up any minute now as En's magic gets stronger and stronger
- Something is happening with the sludge-filled box. SOMEONE IS COMING, RIGHT?

Spell 145 : The root of evil
- One of the boxes exploded. Aikawa/Caiman (what to call you, bro?) said that He is dead. He sensed it. En had successfully killed him (it's a surprise that he managed to kill him without the store knife. Hmm, seems suspicious)
- It's not over yet. Aikawa/Caiman still has more lives/ heads (thanks to the sorcerers who could generate matter). One head= one life. Were they gifts? Or merely a tool to kill sorcerers? One head is not enough, right?

" HIS NAME IS HOLE. HE IS THE CURSE OF ALL HUMANS KILLED BY SORCERERS, TAKEN FORM. HOLE CRAVED THE DEATHS OF MORE AND MORE POWERFUL SORCERERS ALONG WITH MY FEAR AND FURY."

- The flesh suit at En's mansion is a conglomeration of sorcerer death. Hole consumed more sacrifices, growing in strength. The lives 'hole' gave Aikawa to carry out its plan are almost gone (he lost them along the way). En recently killed the second last one
- There's only one head left. Even if the heads grow back, there's only one body ( the mushroom-filled body)
- The goal was not to get stronger (by stealing elite sorcerers magic). It's the hatred towards sorcerers in general. Risu deduced that the cross-eyes never truly existed
- The black powder: something Aikawa made up when he was researching sorcerers (aren't you proud, Prof? At first, the idea was to steal others' magic by transplanting their tumours but became a business that attracted the low ranks
- Risu finally got closure about his friendship with Aikawa (Risu: "Back when you weren't the hole's puppet, you were my man." Me: OwO). They plan to end his life (Ai's, the original body)
- The funny thing is that Caiman was a surprise to both Hole and Ai. Caiman came back without Hole's power (when he got his head got cut off)
- Ai adds that he doesn't know what Caiman is or who gave his pickled head life again When Ai was inside of Caiman, he didn't sense Hole's presence. Ai (Aikawa) mentions to Risu that Caiman would've never existed if they never met
- Prof Kasukabe finally kicking the bucket (not really, he turned zombie). They run from him. If they manage to kill Hole, the professor will probably go back to normal
- Haru sees Prof from the devil's black house. She commanded that the house bring him inside. Prof tried hurting Haru but was smacked lol devils are curious and brave creatures, aren't they?
- Shin is still trying to escape with En's body. He sees Sho's head and recognises it. The three got sucked into the soup of sludge
- Aikawa (with the store knife) and Risu arrived at the room (FINALLY!)

Spell 146: Full-swing sayonara
WHY ARE THEY WAVING US GOODBYE? HAYASHIDA SENSEI? WHY?

- We see Kirion attempting to find the source of the rain. If the rain keeps up, the sorcerers' population will be wiped out
- The sky is polluted with mud & oil (sludge) but as she ascends higher into the sky, everything clears. She sees a lot of bodies feeding (the liquid) on the cloud
- We see a huge door dumping the bodies onto the clouds
- The dumping lake is receding. Vaux and the others wait for it to reach the bottom. They all worry about everyone in the central department store
- We see Shin and En (also Sho's head) arriving at the room too (in style, of course)
- En stopped his mushroom magic. The dolls disappear. Noi and Shin reunites *AAA* Noi forgave him so easily XD
- Chidaruma advises En not to relax just yet. We see the devils going back into the black house
- Aikawa proceeds to slice the head of 'the boss' with the store knife. Blood (or sludge) comes pouring out. We see Ai's badly injured head growing out of the body. He's the final head. As Ai's soul(?) ghost (?) comes out of Aikawa's body, Caiman is back from his 'slumber'
- Ai asks Risu to kill him. His head is included because he's part of 'it'. Killing Ai will end Risu's curse.
- Risu asks Caiman for the store knife. The two bid each other goodbye before Risu chopped his head amongst several others

Spell 147 : Long-awaited birthday
- The boss finally dies; his flesh breaks down
- En is bitter that Caiman is still alive because he killed him before lol
- This version of Caiman doesn't remember Nikaido. Nikaido and Kawajiri wonder who resurrected him from his pickled head
- Tetsujo carries Dokuga's badly injured body. En plans to kill them but was stopped by Fujita. Shin advises them to get out of there first. En is still adamant about making Nikaido his partner -_-
- Nikaido uses her devil power to sense Risu's thoughts and proceeds to share them with everyone to keep everyone in the loop
- Caiman asks who he is (poor baby, he has been asking since volume 1) but they still don't know
- Nikaido search for her magic box. Fujita notices that there is one box untouched in the room. Risu asks Ai if everything is over. He apologises to Risu saying that he was just another one of his tools and that his duty is done
- Apparently, his duty was to gather the most powerful sorcerers in one room (WHAT? IT HAS BEEN A RUSE ALL ALONG?) WE ONLY GET A FEW MINS OF CALMNESS AND YOU'RE TELLING ME THAT IT'S GOING TO BE CHAOTIC AGAIN? SH*T)
- So the boxes are the number of lives Ai has. Once all of the boxes are broken, 'it' will begin
- Ai started laughing. He mentions that the cross-eyes are coming back. Before throwing his head away, Ai told Risu that everyone is dead
- Risu's Curse magic disappears. THE ROOM BLACKED OUT. Nikaido used her devil eyes to see. SOMETHING IS BEGINNING. They can't escape. Their bodies are slowly burned by an acidic liquid
- En ask for Chidaruma's help but he told them to save themselves. They're inside some kind of creature
- The humans see the floating house and something coming from the lake. They started bowing to him. Chidaruma claims that he won the bet and freezes the devils. 'Store' came to demote them into sorcerers. Blood fills the black house.

CHIDARUMA GREETS HOLE

A final showdown in the Central Department Store looms, as the most powerful sorcerers, and few hangers on, face the Hole in its latest form. Watching the show are the devils, trapped in a wager against Chidaruma. Volume 21. of Dorohedoro continues the crazy action that we've come to know and love.

Much of this volume of Dorohedoro is concerned with tying up a few loose backstory threads. Caiman, Ai and Aikawa are woven closer together, as is his/their relationship with Risu; Ai Coleman's journey is elucidated; we get to know Kirion a bit better; and we get a few hints of what Chidaruma has been up to over some time. Although there's nothing particularly unexpected, it comes together really well.

Actually I lie- there was one scene that came out of the blue- the mass slaughter if all the devils. Oh Chidaruma, you crazy cat.

The illustrations match the madness of the text, providing a perfect visual complement. Hayashida is able to depict both the action and humour that forms an essential part of the written component of this story. I can't get past some of the noses though, which look a tad inflamed- like every character had their nose broken. Maybe that's deliberate?

Even this close to the end of the series, there are still giant questions being raised. What, exactly, is Chidaruma trying to accomplish at seemingly any cost? Just who or what is this current version of Caiman, actually? And what in the flying hell is going on above the clouds in the sorcerers' world?!

On the other hand, we are getting a lot of answers to other long-standing questions though: an explanation for all of Aikawa's/Caiman's/the cross-eyes' boss' extra heads, the true nature and identity of the big bad, etc. And wrapped up in the midst of all that is a great (and really disturbing) showdown between En and Hole.

This is just a nearly flawless volume, marred only by a weird translation error that referred to Kirion as "he," when she's clearly Tanba's wife, and has been referred to as "she" all this time. Oh yeah, Kirion plays an important role in events in this volume, demonstrating once again that no one in Dorohedoro is unimportant. Considering the size of the cast, that is a fantastic accomplishment!

The final battle! Kind of! And a really satisfyingly horrible one, too, Hayashida flexing all her grotesque body-horror skills. And a lot - a LOT - of exposition, explanation, that all mostly makes sense but would make more sense if so many Cross-Eyes didn't look so similar. Still not sure where all of this leaves Caiman, but nor do any of the other characters. Nikaido's permanent 8D-face is getting a little old, given how expressive she used to be. And then the ending...yeesh. Maybe the Actual Devil Himself is kind of a bad guy???

This volume is a LOT TO TAKE ON. SO MANY THINGS HAPPENED I WAS WHEEZING THROUGHOUT THE VOLUME ☠☠.
I went from this 😵😵 to this 😭😭😭😭. No kidding, this volume is thick! And packed with so many actions, revelations while also humors present which made the reading so much fun. The joy of reading this series lies on the characters and the mysteries behind the sorcerers and the magic. I still cannot fathom much of what happened bcus its effin brilliant!

It is frustrating now that I have to wait for each volume to actually be published, which means long wait times between reading, which means I have forgotten a lot of the details. This book continues the weirdness, but there is a definitely feeling that we are accelerating to the end of the story. Many of the loose ends are being tied up, and explanations are being provided, never mind whether they hold up to intense scrutiny. Pile on top of that the fact that so many of the characters are undergoing transformation, or being mushroomed by En, that it can be very difficult to remember which distorted, mangled monstrosity is currently which character. All those factors add up to some disorienting reading, yet somehow I still really like the whole package. It's gross, funny, and wildly creative.

I wanted PEPPERONI, YOU F#%KERS!! I hate the way he keeps messin with Asu, but Chidaruma is just such a vibe. So many things are happening and fast! I'm not ready to let go of this series and I just miss those Caiman and Nikaido moments.

The intensity of plot and events remains high after the stale beginning pie interlude.
Now is the time for the powerful players to kick themselves into gear and the revelations of Ai’s story and how this all came to be.

If anyone ever tells me women can’t make good anime / manga, I’m going to smack them. This is NUTS. I can’t believe it’s almost over, I could read it forever.
