OHKUBO Atsushi

Atsushi Ōkubo ( 大久保篤), also romanized as Atsushi Ohkubo, is a Japanese manga author and fantasy artist known for his work on the manga series Soul Eater, which has been adapted into an anime. Okubo worked as an assistant under Rando Ayamine, on the manga series Get Backers. He also created artwork for various cards for the Lord of Vermillion game.

Atsushi Ōkubo was not a model student and was more attracted to drawing than to learning. At the age of 20, after finishing studies at a manga school where he met Rando Ayamine, the author of Get Backers, he became Rando Ayamine's assistant for two years. Finally, he won a competition at Square Enix's Gangan magazine with his first manga series B.Ichi and it was published for four volumes. After the end of his last manga, he created Soul Eater, still for Square Enix's Gangan magazine, which brought him worldwide success.

Yoooo.......... Ooohh. Yeah, it stings. 2 stars, eh? Yeah.... Unfortunate, but this was an extremely mediocre, cliché and unoriginal first volume. It kind of reminds me of another series... *cough* Black Clover *cough* ... Too bad I forget which...

One good thing about this series that I'll throw out there right off the bat: It's not another manga about kids in a super-special-magic academy, it's about what happens after their education when said kids join the workforce with their newly developed super-special-magic powers. I thought that was a neat thing to do, to show the "after", what all that academia amounts to. Too bad that's where the originality ends hahahahajajajajajajaj

Here's the lineup of this manga's cast:

image of lineup

Guest who's the: Leader of the troupe, mean smart guy who bullies the main character/everyone, main character, main character's rival. (The girl characters are both generic girl characters there for the fanservice so I'm not including them.)
ANSWER KEY=>

The whole cast is just a collection of stereotypes that we've already seen in every anime and manga ever created ever. The main character is some super special twerp with a face that annoys me everytime I see his stupid grin, and who shouts "I wanna be a hero!!!!!" almost literally every other lines he speaks, and who of course has a sob story background. He has a smug rival from the academy who is also powerful and has a strong case of eighth-grade syndrome. The 1st in command of their firefighting troupe is the supportive, inspirational, strong guy whose quirk is that he likes working out all the time. The 2nd in command of their troupe is the cliché mean smart guy with glasses and short bangs that bullies the main character/everyone. I hate how you can tell exactly what kind of character he's going to be just from his character design. Actually, I can also say that for literally every single character in this manga, which is why I made that little game up there.

THE CHARACTERS WERE SO BORING! AND FRUSTRATING! And also kind of trippy, I'm not going to lie. I couldn't believe that Ohkubo was literally just throwing characters from other manga at me, BUT HE LITERALLY WAS!! I almost still can't even believe it. I'm getting war flashbacks from Black Torch which was another completely recycled piece of shonen disappointment.

Also one last note on the character designs: They are the epitome of a letdown. I mean--obviously--given what I said above. But on top of that, the designs are also just honestly nothing! They're so plain! Just compare them to Ohkubo's character designs for his Soul Eater manga:

image of lineup

Like? Are you kidding me? Those blow the character designs from Fire Force out into another dimension, never to be seen again (I wish).

So yeah. The characters=shit. How about the ~story~? Yeah honestly I can't even say much about that. We see the MC go on a couple firefighting missions, learn his sob story, and the introduction of a ****TOURNAMENT AAAAARRRCCC****. Which, you know what, disregard this whole review because honestly the only thing we really truly need in a shonen series is to have a tournament arc, so show's over this is already a 10/10. i am being sarcastic please end me

Now, I know what you're thinking: With all of this being said, how in the world did this illustrated garbage manage to salvage 2 whole stars from me? Well you know what, I have no idea how, but it still had some semblance of entertainment value and actually made me want to keep reading throughout the whole volume. Granted, a lot of that last part was because I couldn't believe it could be this bad and I was trying to find out when it would start getting better.

Still! Even after finishing this volume I want to read more, and lucky me, when I bought the first volume I also bought the SECOND volume because I'm just that far ahead thinking y'all. I thought this was supposed to be a good series from the coveted Atsushi Ohkubo, okay?! So yeah. Prepare yourselves for that review. It may or may not be coming soon, since I'm terrible. The suspense! *Edit:* It's out! Read it for yourself below!

This was such a great book! We start off with this guy named Shinra and as he is going about the day he sees weird things happening and Infernals appear, and Special Fire force company 8 has come to the rescue and its so awesome seeing how they put down the Infernal and then we have Shinra joining in, the next story is they get a call to put out a man's wife who has become an Infernal, the joining of Arthur Doyle next, taking down another Infernal and having some face off with their senior Maki-san and then participating in some competition vs the 1st FF company. Its a good volume and serves as an introduction to this post-apocalyptic manga where everyone gets turned into an Infernal and this FF co. who solves these problems and or lead character and about his past and whatever happened 12 years ago, its really well done and sets up great things to come forward in the series! The art was fantastic, the characters looked hot and cool, and then the flame mystery and whatever happened is fantastic! Great start!

On an alternate Earth, the majority of Japanese people have been converted (at least on the surface) to the religion of the Sun God. This may or may not have anything to do with the fact that the biggest threat to human life is now spontaneous combustion. The vast majority of people who burst into flames become rampaging monsters.

However, a few become “second-generation” flame controllers who can manipulate fire but not create it, or “third-generation” flame emitters who can create fire and use it in various ways. Those blessed or cursed with these powers often join the Fire Force, a subsection of the fire department that battles fire monsters.

One of these is Shinra Kusakabe, a third-generation who can ignite his feet to give himself superhuman running speed (technically gliding.) His nickname is “the Devil” because of his bizarre habit of grinning widely whenever he’s nervous or upset; when he was a small child, he was found grinning over his mother’s charred corpse. Shinra has a need to prove himself as a hero, and to find the person or thing really responsible for his mother’s death.

This shounen manga is the latest work of Atsushi Ohkubo, the creator of Soul Eater. It’s done in his distinctive cartoony style, with some terrifying flame monsters. Special Fire Force Company 8 is the usual assortment of quirky characters, and there’s considerable humor between the dramatic bits. I also like the creative use of powers.

Before I get into the next bit, I need to talk about “Watsonian” and “Doylist” analysis. The terms are named after the two writers of the Sherlock Holmes stories; John Watson, the in-story chronicler of his friend’s adventures, and Arthur Conan Doyle, the real world author. This is used for the explanation of story elements.

A “Watsonian” explanation is “in-story.” For example, Professor Plum murdered Mr. Boddy in the kitchen with a candlestick because he was being blackmailed over an affair he had with a student. A “Doylist” explanation is “metatextual.” Professor Plum murdered Mr. Boddy because this story is a murder mystery, so someone had to commit a murder.

Both approaches have their place, but have difficulties when crossed. A Watsonian explanation may work perfectly fine in context of a particular story, but trying to assuage Doylist concerns with one doesn’t always work. For example, if every one of an author’s stories has a damsel in distress being rescued by a handsome man, the explanations for this in each individual story may be quite plausible, but that doesn’t excuse the author from being criticized for not varying the formula.

So when we have a scene of two young women showering (seen from the back) in the introductory chapter, the Watsonian explanation is that they’ve gotten sweaty and dirty from fighting an infernal, of course they’re going to take a shower. The Doylist explanation is that the writer wants to give fanservice to the primary audience of teenage boys. (After all, we don’t see the male characters in their shower.) The scene also serves the purpose of establishing some personality traits of the female characters (by failing the Bechdel test) and establishing that Sun God nuns, unlike Catholic ones, are not expected to stay celibate.

And fair enough, this is a manga for teenage boys, and I also appreciate the female form. Plus it flows naturally within the story. So far, so good.

But then we get to Chapter Five, where we meet a bunch of other rookie Fire Soldiers. The male ones are wearing fairly sensible firefighting outfits that would protect them while fighting fires and monsters. But the one woman, Tamaki Kotatsu, is wearing an open coat with a bikini. More, she has a “condition” where she automatically moves in a way such that men around her are forced to cop a feel–and then she gets offended by that, especially by Shinra since he’s got that painful grin on his face.

Now, I am sure there is a perfectly reasonable Watsonian explanation involving the way Tamaki’s powers work that require this. But from a Doylist perspective, it’s just fanservice, and shoddily done at that. It isn’t funny, it calls attention to itself, and it’s degrading to the characters, both Tamaki and Shinra. My interest in following this series crashed.

So, not recommending this one unless you are willing to forgive the crass fanservice.

3.5 rounded up.

I was incredibly surprised with how much I enjoyed this! I usually tend to enjoy both shounen and seinen, but the latter a great deal more. Shounen gets to be too "monster of the week" for me, although that isn't always the case. This is the same author who wrote Soul Eater and I enjoyed the anime for that, so I'm not sure why I didn't think this series would be interesting too. There's some ecchi and there are some of the usual quirks because of that but it's not over-the-top or annoying.

The basic premise for this is: people spontaneously combust and there's a team of firefighters (not like regular firefighters though) who take care of them. The firefighters have different levels of abilities with fire/heat/etc and some don't even have that, but they're all on the same side (for the most part), trying to extinguish the fire people and any problems that arise from them. The main character has "reasons" of course for why he wants to help, and although it's clichéd (FMA anyone?), it's still compelling enough that I need to find out why too.

All in all, really glad I gave this a chance and it's a series I'll definitely continue with.

I LECTURA: 3.5
RELECTURA: +3

“Flames are the breaths of souls…and black soul’s release...”

The way I feel about this anime might just be starting to be on par with my love for the actual anime itself as well. Shinra is absolutely a goat, everything from his crooked smile to his ignition feet are just fire, literally. And while I can’t say for sure if I prefer one medium to the other since the anime was definitely beautifully fluid. But just the wonderful way the fire demons and blazes got shaded, just rocked my world and made me really take a bit back to fully appreciate them. 4.25/5

Unfortunately, I was not particularly wowed by this. Maybe I would prefer to watch it animated, if I'm being honest. While Ohkubo's art is dynamic and crisp, the story and characters fell flat (although Shinra is precious). The pacing after the first few chapters was also rather choppy, and I feel like some development of the very idea of fighting spontaneous combustion before Arthur's introduction and the Rookie Games would have been nice to at least get a firmer grounding of our world. We didn't, and that's why this manga lost me.

Plus there was tasteless fanservice. Not a fan of that.

Many shonen tropes- underdog, frenemy, cool mentor...- in an interesting context of actual firemen putting flame demons to rest.
Not always subtle- I think I got it that that Shinra wants to be a hero after the first dozen times, oversexualized Tamaki...- but pleasant to read nonetheless.

Art is clean and clear. Storytelling is awkward at times (randomly inserted pages diminishing their effect)

For someone who never read or watched Soul Eater, I went into this creator's work blind, and I...really enjoyed this!

The world is filled with people blowing up from the inside and becoming big fire demon like creatures. Sounds crazy right? Well hold on. To battle that we have a Fire Fighter Force of individuals who tackle these creatures head on. We begin to learn through the story that there's individuals with special powers to help aid them against these fire creatures. With that we have our main hero, Shinra, joining this group of Fire Fighters they begin to take out these creatures one by one.

The start is great. They introduce us to a world we know but with a magical element to it all. It somehow all makes sense. Then comes in Shinra, who's really likeable right off the bat. At first you might not, because of his creepy grin in serious or sad situations, but you soon learn why he has that grin. On top of that the team of fire fighters are all interesting and we get some emotional bits that work really well. The comedy is mostly great...except the oversexualized character who comes in at the end. I get we can have some fan service, and I'd never turn down seeing a cute girl with big boobs flaunt her stuff, but it was so over the top here, and on top of that she keeps pushing people's hands under her bra or around her ass. It's odd...maybe they'll explain it later better.

Either way though, besides that gripe, I really enjoyed a lot of this. The art is good, characters are interesting, and the action rocks. I'll be picking up more for sure.

From the creator of Soul Eater: It's Fire Force!
Humanity is under siege from a strange affliction: Spontaneous Human Combustion.
When they combust, they become monsters called Infernals, wreak havoc, attack citizens, etc.
Eventually humanity evolved to combat the Infernals. Some can control fire. Some can create their own fire and use it like a super power.

The hero is one of the latter with a strange facial quirk and a nickname to match.

I quite enjoyed this, though it's feels a bit rushed. Plus, the bumper page that's normally between chapters is missing so there's no transition at some places.

This series has 34 volumes.

Quick review of the entire manga (I can't even tell how many volumes there are, but it gets so repetitive that skipping a chapter or 10 here and there makes no difference).

☄️ Horrible fan service up until the end.
☄️ The most idiotic ending ever—it feels like the mangaka does not even think that readers might not be complete idiots. If you are wondering why I made it to the end: I was hoping the manga would redeem itself.
☄️ Worst characters: all except Maki, ōbi, Arthur (it rubs off on you after a while), Vulcan, Viktor, Hibana, everybody at company 7.

1/1/2024: finally finished the series! And boy did the author work hard to tie his two well-known series together!

---

(This review is concerned from volume 1 to the currently released volumes.)

As it stands, "Fire Force" started out quite shaky. There's a tendency for Okubo Atsushi to be a bit too over-reliant on ecchi humour, and his early fight scenes didn't have enough pacing for it to breathe, and make the wins feel like they've been earnt (I think that it's because I've been somewhat spoilt by the excellent plotting, pacing and characterisation in "My Hero Academia").

It's only in the later volumes that he starts making some sound pacing decisions, and the plot and intrigue picks up. It'll be interesting to see how he finishes off the series.

(And on another note, I should give "Soul Eater" a read at some point too. It's one of husband's favourite series, so I should give it some due attention :) )

Edit: Hmm, now that I've read a bit more stuff recently, the rhythm of the plots and fights aren't ... all that great. Things happen FAR too easily for the MC, despite the "setbacks" they face, with fights being won without them necessarily being earnt. (4 to 3 stars)

3/5 Stars (%64/100)

I admit that it starts slow and quite boring compared to other mangas that I started this year. However, if you are patient enough, it turns into one of the best mangas I've ever read. As our protagonist Shinra matures, the story turns into something very fun and complex. I especially like the character of Shinmon Benimaru as some kind of a vigilante figure. There are many characters that are very interesting like Arthur, and Obi.

The story: The world is almost destroyed by a mysterious fire and many of the residents turned into things called Infernals. Fire force is formed and their duty is to put an end to Infernals that keep appearing. Shinra is a new member of the 8th fire force department.

Cap. 00 - 05

I have the best memories reading Soul Eater, previous manga from the same author. I was hyped for his new series but never got to it. The concept is interesting. People are cauthing fire and there are firemen who put them down. A simple concept with nice art.

I think that this has a good potential. I'll read more but I feel that this will need more than one plot thread and a few more volumes. Now I feel like solid three. five stars.

I read this book via Kindle Unlimited.

This book is set in a world where Tokyo is plagued by spontaneous human combustion, humans are being essentially possessed by things called Infernals and that's where Special Fire Force 8 comes in with their latest recruit, Shinra, a third generation boy with the ability to run at the speed of a rocket with burning feet. With his creepy nervous smile and his burning feet, he has been nicknamed devil his whole life. This is his journey to becoming a hero, like he promised his mother before she died in an event he got blamed for.

I liked this volume, it set up what seems like a very interesting world and story. Shinra and team seem like thye're going to have an interesting dynamic as the story progresses and I will continue this series sometime in the new year!

The following is a review for volumes 1 - 3 and main contain spoilers. Reader discretion is advised.

This is basically Blue Exorcist meets My Hero Academia but not as good as either of those.

The Good:

The world building and conflict is really interesting. It is always fun/funny to see the appropriative shoe on the other foot, and as someone who was raised Catholic it feels like some small details are Easter (ha!) Eggs special for me.

Our main character isn't bad, but his "I'm going to be a hero" thing makes me think of MHA and how much better that manga/show is. Him and his rival character are kind of the low points in the series and I wish the story followed Obi or Maki (I freaking love her little fire balls - they are too cute) as they are way more interesting but get only a little screen time.

The Bad:

The character and weapon designs are uninspired and pretty basic. I lost my God dang mind when I saw the ax/knife/dart/gun and quit reading for the night because it was so dumb. And, none of the other weapons particularly stood out. As a side note, why does the Arthur's lightsaber have a scabbard? What is the point of that?

As for the character designs, Shinra looks just like Blue Exorcist's main character Rin - so much so that I had to double check to see if this was written by the same mangaka. Why is Arthur so stupid? It is fine to have a dumb character but a conflict was literally resolved by him remembering that he was right handed.

Then there is the ladies. Why does Tamaki and Maki have such similar names and character designs? I genuinely thought Tamaki was Maki when she first showed up. Also, what is with the way Tamaki's power manifests? It is both aesthetically unpleasing and nonsensical. And, what the hell is going on with Company 5's captain's pupils? Why are they clover shaped? It is so distracting!

The Yikes:

What the hell is with all the super gross ecchi "humor"? I've come to expect a certain amount of it in Shonen, but Tamaki's whole purpose seems to be for ecchi. It's like any time the plot slows down, it has to come to a complete stop so Tamaki can fall into someone and some how their hands end up down her pants or up her shirt. It's not integrated well, it's nonsensical, it's not funny and basically feels like Mineta from MHA wrote those sections in. If they kept the ecchi to the pointless ladies shower scenes, I would probably keep reading but because it happens any time the pacing slows down I'm just not going to read any further.

One last note: how old are these characters? I assumed Shinra was the usual 15/first year high schooler age but he is drawn similarly to Maki who apparently is ex military. I ask because the 5th's Captain is clearly a grown ass woman and her being in love with Shinra is either fine or super gross.
