Seven lectures on Brother Andre illustrated with 150 pictures from the Oratory's archives. When Brother Andre dies on January 6, 1937, all knew he was a saint. No one wanted his memory to be idealized, or changed, or forgotten in any way. So for eight years, an ecclesiastical tribunal called on 49 of the best witnesses and asked a long series of questions. A total of 3,335 pages of accurate, first-hand information were thus collected. Other Church officials were appointed by Rome in 1962 to conduct a similar process in Montreal, and 22 witnesses added another 900 pages on even more specific questions. Surely few individuals are better known now than the humble founder of Saint Joseph's Oratory. The seven conferences which follow were prepared for the Brothers of Holy Cross in Austin, Texas. The story they tell is based on several biographies, but especially on the narratives of the witnesses, in their own words. Several of them spent much time with Andre and could enter, as it were, the intimacy of his heart and soul. They also provided a good insight into his religious community, the Congregation of Holy Cross.
