2025 Review: Still damn good. The Dark Ranger is def the best thing to happen to the series tus far. He creates a sense of evil that's not so easy to face. Get some great character moments with Tommy and Billy. And the feel of defeat feels real for now. All good stuff.

2018 Review: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers CONTINUES to be damn good. I can't believe it. This is one of my favorite surprises ever.

Kyle Higgins has taken the campy and silly feel out of his Go Go Power rangers but instead of going dark or gritty he sticks with a fun and adventurous Power Ranger storyline with big stakes. We now get thrown into a future that has gone to hell. Who is the main enemy? Well that be a huge spoiler. Then have the final fight between the dark ranger, and it's pretty great. Some excellent side moments for characters to grow here too. Oh yeah, and a crappy one shot silly story at the end. However the main storyline Kyle delivers the goods, moves the story forward, and gives us realistic rangers with the funness of the series but without the campy part. A 4 out of 5.

I remember alot of the tv show story from when I was a kid and the twists are very similar so not surprising me as much. Still a solid adventure read.

[Read as single issues]
You'll forgive me for having to check which issues are in this trade and then what happened in those issues, because the MMPR series at Boom! has been one long interconnected story since it first started so it's pretty difficult to differentiate when one trade ends and another begins.

Issues 9, 11, and 12 focus on the main story as the Rangers mount their first counterattack against Rita after she finally won thanks to the help of the Black Dragon in the previous volume. Billy and Tommy then find themselves trapped in an alternate dimension, home to the Black Dragon, AKA Lord Drakkon, AKA...well, you'll see. This is the most intense Power Rangers story you're ever going to see, and the despair and hopelessness that oozes off the pages is both wonderful and awful all at once.

Issue 10 is another spotlight issue, this time on Billy who feels like he isn't living up to his role as a Ranger. Again I really like these issues, since character development was done in fits and starts in the TV show but is much more effortless here. It's also nice to see these characters worry and feel insecure, even if they are superheroes. It's all very Spider-Man-y.

Hendry Prasetya pencils the main storyline once more, and continues to churn out massive robot fights and human interaction without missing a beat. Jonathan Lam pencils the fill-in for Billy, which is a very different, more subdued art style that certainly fits Billy's personality very well.

We also get the conclusion of the Ongoing Adventures Of Bulk & Skull, only for them to be replaced by the New Adventures Of Squat & Baboo instead. These are fun, but not particularly memorable - mostly like the characters in the show, so that's a point in its favour, I guess?

Arguably one of the most consistently satisfying super hero romps being published. This is volume three of the Power Rangers series and Higgins is still throwing in some great twist and turns. The artwork remains good as well. The book just feels like it could compete with all the top superhero team books around. Higgins also continues to build on the lore of the Rangers and answers many questions long time fans may have always wonder about. This time around Billy aka the Blue Ranger gets the spotlight as we dive into the pressures of Billy's need to as cool as his hero persona both on the inside and out. Though the twist on Lord Drakkon was a bit predictable it is still a cool reveal. Fans will welcome the inclusion of the talking sword Saba. I especially enjoyed all the foreshadowing Kyle Higgins builds in the story. The book is really well written and is action pack throughout. It definitely adds more depth to the old school tv show. I cannot wait to see what happens in the next volume.

The storyline picks up and I feel like this is classic Power Rangers. Big Fights, a look at morality, fighting for the good.

Issue 10 was the standout of this volume for me. I loved the spotlight on Billy and the art was good too. The other issues had great action and seeing Tommy and Billy try to make sense of their current predicament was fun. The cliffhanger was awesome. The Bulk and Skull side stories continue to be pretty bad. I'd rather have more art gallery stuff than those.

Another solid entry for Higgins' darker take on the Power Rangers that brings us deeper into the complexity of Tommy Oliver's presence.

A really well done volume that sees this series finally come into it's own with the introduction of the alternate universe stuff, art is still fairly solid and there's some great set up for character stuff that we wouldn't see com back in full until Shattered Grid.

From 4 to 5.

We go from crazy new villain attacking the team to an alternate timeline with an evil Tommy reigning supreme. It's great fanservice in the most evil way.

Well, fellas, MMPR just keeps getting better and better.
As always, the art was lovely, the emotional beats were there, and the Rangers were the best little found family. I loved this.
I think Billy’s focus issue was very well placed. We see bestie acting certain ways, but it was nice to get a peek into his head. The art was so cute in that issue I literally might buy just that one. My word, the characterization and comforting style was just what I could’ve hoped for from a simple one-off issue. I hope all the Rangers get a moment like that.
Speaking of the other Rangers, I just loved the characterization in this one. Whether it was in the canon universe or not, the kids were just so authentic and real. I love the dynamics between the team and I’m really interested to see where the story goes from here. I’m also interested to see what dynamic emerges between Billy and Tommy, now that they’re getting time on their own. Usually characters are paired up like this to get everything on the table, but I’m not picking up on any beef between them. Hehe maybe some fun content is soon to come
All in all, this was such an interesting read and I’m going to start the next volume asap
8/10 the issue and variant covers in this volume were absolutely amazing this go around. My word. They had no reason to pop off so hard but those were totally gorgeous for no reason. Keep it up, please! I want more!

This ongoing series is so good! I love how Higgins has taken such a staple of my childhood and brought it to the present with more modern and mature storytelling while keeping the fun and ridiculousness that is Power Rangers.

This is the third volume, so it picks up where the last one ended. Lord Drakkon is a main focus of this volume. I love the design of his costume. And I am totally here for his backstory. I'm a big fan of alternate timelines and time travel, so it's exactly my cup of tea.

There's a whole chapter in this volume that puts the main story on the back burner and focuses on one character, Billy. A different artist draws this chapter so there's a more personal feel to it. I liked it, but having less of the main story in this volume made me hungry for more.

I really like the references to other seasons of Power Rangers. I won't go into details, but the last panel has two people standing next to each other that made me very excited.

The Ongoing Adventures of Bulk & Skull has another story at the end of this volume. It's a fun, cute story but I'd prefer more of the character stories than another comical slap comedy with those lovable antagonists.

I give this volume a 5/5. Higgins knows what to do with Power Rangers. My favorite ongoing comic series currently out there.

Continually impressed with this comic. What Boom! Studios, Kyle Higgins, and Ryan Parrott have created with POWER RANGERS with these comics are far beyond what the TV series ever did. Granted, I know that the series was limited with their storytelling due to budget and footage constraints. But what they get so right is expanding the world and mythology of POWER RANGERS without ever making it feel too intimidating or complex or complicated. Convoluted even. They give you just enough in each book to take the world even further and interesting without ever making you feel like you’ve consumed too much or are confused by anything. Which I think is what usually happens with really big sci fi IP. Like, the stinger of the last book had me excited when they were able to use Black Dragon’s mechanical arm to access the morphing grid and disperse Tommy’s powers unto the rangers, making them all green rangers. But then with this volume, the multiverse aspect, Lord Drakkon being a mix of the White and Green Ranger, Jason originally being the one to be the White Ranger, what the White Ranger was meant to be to the world and when, and it was so exciting to see that Saba was the voice they were hearing locked up underground. It was just a cool entrance. I loved the Billy issue and I again love how Zack seems to be the one to make them see what they don’t.

This series continues to go from strength to strength. In this volume we continue our journey of following the rangers in their mission to defeat Lord Drakkon and Rita Repulsa. With the Rangers still without access to the morphin grid, they must come up with a way to regain their powers.

This volume brings us continued fantastic writing from the brilliant Kyle Higgins and beautiful art by Jon Lam and Hendry Prasetya. They all continue to embody the feel of power rangers all the while keeping the story gritty, interesting and dark. This was more of a filler volume for me, a necessary one though as it’s all about to go crazy in the next volume. We see the story built brick by brick, steadily preparing us for what is to come. And what’s to come is truly special. This is still a must read in order to maintain the story and answer questions that have arisen thus far. Stay with us whilst we read this impeccable Power Rangers run. I can’t wait to hear what you all think about it.

Collects Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Issues #9-12.

Review: The origin of Lord Drakkon is revealed at last. This series takes such a fun take on this universe. I love the thought of a “what if tommy didn’t turn good?” universe. It’s so eerie and fun!

Story Recap: Billy breaks out of the Dark Dimension thanks to Goldar’s help and the Rangers are able to get control of their Zords before the Black Dragon and Rita can attack the cities. Billy and Tommy get teleported to the Black Dragon’s world and lord Drakkon is revealed to be behind it all. Billy and Tommy find themselves in an Angel Grove ruled by Rita and Tommy - who is Lord Drakkon, a mixture of green and white power coins. Saba saves Billy and Tommy and flies them to safety and explains what happened in this universe. Tommy was broken from his brainwashing and instead of joining the Rangers he went back to Rita. They were able to mount a war against Zordon and win - wiping the rangers off the Earth. While Tommy reels from this information, they meet the Coinless - a resistance group. Trini, Aisha, and Bulk appear to approach arrest them.

I’m still really enjoying this book. Nostalgia is part of it, but it’s getting less and less. It’s doing it’s own thing and really diverging from the tv show. I’m incredibly interested in this alternate timeline that’s been established. The designs of everything are really on par with how good the designs from the show are.

The issue that focused on Billy was pretty solid, too. I like that they’re doing these spotlights on different members of the team through flashbacks.

The Bulk and Skull backup story is fine. I’m still not a huge fan, just reading it because it’s there. This might have been my favorite so far, though. I liked the winks and nods that the reader gets from Rita, and the end with Kim was pretty sweet.

Hendry Prasetya on art is still superlative. Everything just looks so good every issue.

So, in short, I’m invested, and I’m in this one for a while still.

I feel like this is the issue where the narrative has maybe started to be the most coherently dialed in. It does a great job focusing on Billy and Tommy, and I think that sort of division of the heroes allows for a bit more spotlighting. But adding in some possible time travel and/or dimension hopping to the proceedings, coupled with continually cool choices around the depictions of the Zords and the various monster/antagonists within this series, makes for a really fun, nostalgia-infused interpretation of what was otherwise a pretty scrappy kids television series. I went ahead and checked out a chunk of the rest of this original run through my digital library access, and I'm looking forward to churning through most of it during this upcoming month.

These volumes are too short. The story here is riveting, for sure, and there's no way anyone who's read this far will dare miss the next volume. It's just all a little bittersweet, since we have to wait so long for the next bit of the story.

I do wonder if Higgins' vision will include any other Ranger powers or teams going forward. This title hints at it, what with but since the MMPR powers have become so central to the story world, how would a transition to Zeo, or even just from the dino powers to the thunder powers, ever work convincingly? Hm.

Gonna have to wait and see, I guess. = )

Alright, this is where this comic series really gained momentum for me. Character dynamics have taken shape, the creators have settled into a comfortable tone that doesn't take itself too seriously (Vol 1 took itself far too seriously) while also not dipping into camp or self-parody. The series' depiction of Rita remains the highlight, but the introduction of a new villain, Black Dragon, and a dystopian alternate timeline has added freshness for those seeking something new from the classic Rangers.

I can now comfortably say I'm hooked, and look forward to picking up Volume 4 whenever it finds its way into a Comixology sale.

Some interesting changes in the third volume as the book starts to feel more like a comic book and less like a comic adaptation. Here, Billy makes a move to free himself from Rita and the Black Dragon is exposed. This was definitely an action packed book as there wasn't much character development at all but we did get a download from an odd source of where Tommy and Billy are. The art was solid especially with some new designs. Overall, another lightning fast reader that doesn't breathe much. The stand alone Billy chapter helped a little but the characters aren't getting much in terms of development.

I wasn’t going to continue this series as I didn’t really like the first two volumes but I found myself bored at the store with a bit of time to kill before work so I figured why not.

Art work is pretty inconsistent. There’s 3 different styles not counting the Bulk and Skull bit.

Story is pretty interesting finally. There’s an entire filler issue to explain alternate dimensions and it was pointless and had some lame manga style to it.

Still, the main new plot line is interesting and I’ll definitely be checking out volume 4.

Highlights: with their new green suits the rangers wrestle back control of their zords from the Black Dragon’s control. Billy and Tommy find out that the Black Dragon is itself a zord and discover its hatch. Though they are aboe to destroy the Black Dragon they are warped to the Black Dragon’s dimension of provenance. This is a dark volume that develops history of alternate earth. We see the alternate earth fall to Lord Drakkon and Repulsa.

Highlights: we see a large arc de triopmh carved with the insignias of Repulsa and Drakkon. Lord Drakkon holding the red ranger’s helmet. We meet Saba, the magic sword that lay in wait for the heroes that would come to save the world.

This one was so so great. With an end for the first issue of the volume that'd make people flip.
Since the get go this series was such a treat for MMPR lovers and especially Tommy Oliver lovers. It's as if we could've had the vibe of today's movie with the old generation. So you get the characters you loved as a kid with the badassery and depth and darkness we can appreciate as grownups. These stories are getting better and better and I can't wait for the next volume.

This is the volume that finally introduces a lot of people's new favorite Power Rangers Villain Lord Drakkon. And it is a really good introduction and it is a really good take on the evil universe type story as we learn how Lord Drakkon came into power and we see this universes explanation for Saba which is really cool and even future hints to other characters from later parts of the Power Rangers series.

We're finally getting into it. The reason that drew me to start getting into the Power Rangers again. The main antagonist, an alternate reality future version of one of the Power Rangers, who has conquered his world and seeks to conquer other alternate realities as well. There is just so much that is going on and it all starts here.

The destroyed Thunderzords, Ninjazords, the White Tiger sword Saba, and the "Coinless". Great artwork.
