Meet seven of Turtle Springs, Kansas, finest women who are determined to revive their small town after the War Between the States took most of its men. . .and didn t return them. The ladies decide to advertise for husbands and devise a plan for weeding out the riff raff. But how can they make the best practical choices when their hearts cry out to be loved? "

This was a really fun collection of seven stories by some of today's most popular and entertaining Christian fiction authors. I loved how all the stories took place in the same town,Turtle Springs, Kansas. The women of the town are honest in their advertisement of needing men as their men had gone off to fight in the Civil War and hadn't returned. They interviewed prospective mates for 15 minutes at a time but didn't always suit each other so they went on to the next until they do suit. Such strong heroines who must keep the homestead running in times of adversity. There is a good feeling when you read these stories and there is humor in them. I recommend to all Historical Christian fiction readers. Pub Date 01 Jun 2017 Thank you to NetGalley and Barbour Publishing, Inc. for a review copy in exchange for my honest review.
What do you do when almost all the men in your small town went off to fight in the civil war and didn't return? When you are put in as honorary mayor until your father, the elected mayor, returns...but he doesn't. Life has turned completely around for this small town and all the occupants living in town as well as the farmers and ranchers living outside of town.
Abigail Melton is trying everything she can to help her town survive and the people thrive. Yet when your town consists mainly of women and children it's a struggle to make ends meet and keep up with all the labor of running farms and ranches. If only there was some way to help bring men to their town so the women might find suitable, God loving, hard working and family men to become their husbands.
Wait, there is!! It's so simple...instead of mail order brides she'll advertise for mail order husbands to come audition for the chance to court and wed the lovely ladies of Turtle Springs, Kansas. Perfect! This will solve everyone's problems and bring life and joy and light and vitality for everyone!
Such a fun premise for a collection of novellas! I had previously read a couple of these authors' work before so I was excited to read more by them and discover new authors. There are 7 stories for seven brides and I really enjoyed the way the stories interconnected. The first story sets the foundation for the setting, the characters and the premise of the collection. Abigail Melton has her hands full trying to coordinate everything, be the mayor, help her mom and sister, keep crime under control, and a handful of other demands. As the day gets closer for the auditions, more men keep showing up and of course that can cause trouble.
The women characters were a hoot. Some were just fun and spit fires and others wore their hearts on their sleeves, while others held their emotions closely to their hearts. Each story features a different woman in the town and follows her from the time of the auditions or just before the auditions. I loved how each story showed little snippets from the previous story's timeline. It was great! And the men that come to Turtle Springs, they were perfect! Loved the different backgrounds of each of them and the way they were able to fit right in with the town and find a perfect fit for them.
While I enjoyed the collection as a whole and the novellas individually, I have to say I have a couple favorites. A Clean Slate by Susanne Dietze and Come What May by Patty Smith were my top two favorites, but really all 7 were well written and very sweet and fun romances. Each book deals with healing, heartache, learning how to move forward, saying goodbye to the past, trusting God and His will for us, and even some suspense in a couple. Well worth the time spent if you enjoy collections like this. The writing style between the different authors seemed to flow pretty smoothly and it wasn't an abrupt transition from one book to the next.
Content: Clean. Some sweet kisses, a couple fights but nothing graphic. Talk of God and His hands guiding our lives as well as characters learning to trust in Him and rely on His love.
I received a copy from the publisher, Barbour Publishing, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
This is a wonderful collection of novellas. In the year following the Civil War, the women of Turtle Springs, Kansas take fate into their own hands when they advertise for husbands. They plan on holding interviews or auditions when choosing which man will be allowed to court them. These women have learned to be self-reliant when their men did not return from the war. Each novella tells a story of strong women who want to find someone with whom to share their life. But in this search, they learn that God is in control, that He has a plan for all. These are stories of hardship, heartache, perseverance, forgiveness and trust. There are laugh out loud moments as well. Although each story is complete by itself, they are interwoven into a much greater story of hope in the future of a once dying town.
I look forward to reading more books written by the authors of this collection.
Seven Brides for Seven Mail Order Husbands Romance Collection was incredible. I cannot say enough good things about this book. It features seven stories and each are wonderfully written.
A small town in Kansas has lost many of its men to the war. The women decide to post an article for mail ordered husbands. The husbands come and are interviewed and the women select who they would like to court. This book takes seven of those women and tells their story. I loved each one. The characters are so great and you just get caught up in each story. Each story references the other characters and it all culminates into one great story at the end.
This is a wonderful book that I would gladly give a five star rating. If you love historical fiction, this book won't let you down. Loved it.
A delightful collection of all new stories! Based partially on the reality of the aftermath of the Civil War, when so many young men died, the setting of a prairie town full of mostly women desperate enough to "audition" men for the job of husband, and sometimes father, seemed rather authentic. What a way to pick a mate. It was like historical speed-dating!
The variety of men who came, sometimes rather unwittingly in a few cases, were an interesting mix, from wounded warriors, former soldiers, cowboys, gentlemen and would-be farmers, just looking for a chance to start over. I enjoyed reading about the many capable, brave women who had been given so much responsibility in the absence of their fathers, brothers, and husbands in some cases. The stories helped me understand the hardships many faced following the war, on both sides, from lingering prejudices, financial difficulty, hard work--especially the homesteaders and farmers--and the pressure to care for their families on top of it all.
They were all enjoyable tales, overlapping from the start of the "audition" day in May 1866. I especially liked the last two stories, with more of the history mixed in. The shopkeeper's story was good too with the return of a wounded warrior and lost love. Some of these would make good full length novels. (See comments below for more details.)
Readers who enjoy clean historical romances with some faith elements will probably like this collection. 4.5 stars
(An e-book was provided by NetGalley and Barbour publishing. All opinions are my own.)
This book has been filled with many great novella's by many great authors. Seven Brides for Seven Mail Order Husbands is a great collection of romance stories from the time of war and whats left after the battle. In this time in history mail order was a great ideal to pull men to a area where women are needing husbands to finish up the family. Plus to help them in their lives. Sometimes even true love comes out. I loved this book was well written by seven different authors each telling a story of a bride. Characters are well written.
Incredible stories of the devastation of the Civil War and the women who rose above it!
Abigail’s Proposal by Cynthia Hickey A wonderfully sweet story! I loved how the Sheriff couldn't decide what he wanted but God kept pushing him in the right direction! The Mayor knew what she wanted from the beginning but had to trust God to fulfill her heart's desires! I'm looking forward to enjoying the rest of this anthology! This was a great way to start it!!
The Kidnapped Groom By Susan Page Davis I laughed a lot during this book and even had to share a bit of the story with my husband to explain my laughing out loud!! A great story that pulled me in right away! Those boys were perfectly described and I could see my own son responding that way! Truly a great novella and I love the whole concept of this anthology!
A Clean Slate by Susanne Dietze A brilliant story full of forgiveness, and growing in both mind and spirit! I loved the loose piglet escapade and the secondary romances going on all around them! Of course the final schoolhouse scene was my favorite!
Sunshine of My Heart by Darlene Franklin So sweet! I loved how they knew right away they were meant for each other and trusted God on the timing! Just a beautiful story of tender love that grows and strengthens!
Come What May by Patty Smith Hall Stubborn men! Oh, this Luke frustrated me to no end! He loves her but doesn't feel worthy enough for Chardy because of his disability from the war! I just want to strangle this guy! Sure glad this story finally had a happy ending!! The brothers on the other hand impressed me with their wisdom beyond their years and their love for their sister! I love books that make me emotional! And this one definitely did that!!
Dime Novel Suitor by Carrie Fancett Pagels A wonderfully funny case of misunderstandings let's a British nobleman take on the role of fiance unbeknownst to him. But God leads them down the right path despite their confusion! I really enjoyed this book! I look forward to reading more of hers!
Louder than Words by Gina Welborn I had a harder time getting into this book with so much detail in the beginning but it was worth the effort and was a wonderful book! I especially loved the private picnic and the ending (although it did end rather abruptly)! That Jane is an amazing woman who deserves a man like him! Two people who are quite opposite of traditional roles make a wonderful couple together!
Seven Brides for Seven Mail-Order Husbands by Seven Talented Authors!
It is 1865 and the war is happening between the states. What is Turtle Springs, Kansas supposed to do when it loses most of its men to the war? One woman has the answer. One woman will solve the town’s dilemma by posting an ad for mail-order grooms. Seven Brides for Seven Mail-Order Husbands will take you through seven women’s stories to find the groom they desire and want. Each of these authors has penned a series of novellas that range from mysterious, delightful, adventurous, funny, riveting, and yes – all of the grooms are handsome! Each of the stories will leave the reader happy and wanting their own mail-order groom (if you’re not married that is!).
There were two quotes I found inspiring: Dime Novel Suitor by Carrie Fancett Pagels “I believe God knows all things, He love us all. We are in a war with darkness. God knows the devil’s plans. He’ll take us to the heavenly realms when our lie on earth no longer is the place for us to be. We’re here but an infinitesimal time, compared to His eternity. We have to trust that God knows why and when we must join Him in glory.”
Louder Than Words by Gina Marie Welborn “Marriage was the fertile soil in which love grew.”

A nice collection of stories. What happens when women decide various ways to find husbands? Posting ads could be the way to happiness. Each author tells a different story and brings all the characters to life in unique ways. I enjoyed these stories. I received a copy of this collection from Net Galley and this is my personal honest opinion.
Amazing Collection! Each novella is it's own story but connected to the others through the community and their shared hardships. I loved how the characters interacted with each other throughout the whole book. The town of Turtle Springs, Kansas lost most of their men to the Civil War, some to illness. Mayor Abigail Melton and the other women place this advertisement in several papers. WANTED: MEN TO AUDITION AS HUSBANDS. TURTLE SPRINGS, KANSAS. AUDITIONS HELD MAY 25. ONLY GODLY, UPSTANDING MEN NEED APPLY. CHECK IN AT MAYOR'S OFFICE. Not all of the brides and grooms meet at the auditions. Some aren't even looking, but find love anyway. There are happily ever after endings, there are some very suspenseful moments, there's even a kidnapping or two. Funny moments and heart-tugging moments are found in this book as well. You can read a synopsis of each story in the description, I've decided to share a few of my favorite lines from early in each novella, I don't give any spoilers. Abigail's Proposal by Cynthia Hickey, I liked this scene on page 28. With a tilt of her pert chin, she headed back outside, leaving him to follow as if he were her obedient watchdog. Shaking his head, he did as she expected. Why? He had no idea. No other gal in all his life had him tagging after her. Ever. What was it about Abigail Melton that had him disregarding his vow to stay away from women? The more time he spent with her, the less he wanted to stay away. (Thoughts of new Sheriff Josiah Ingram) The Kidnapped Groom by Susan Page Davis, I loved the Piner boys. I laughed when I read the line on page 70, “We're not stealing nothing, mister. In fact, you can thank us. This is your lucky day.” A Clean Slate by Susanne Dietze, there are a couple of unexpected surprises that I really enjoyed in this story. The line I chose is on page 136. Shoulders sagging, Miss Green looked up at Drew. “Thank you for the information, Mr. Cooper. You've protected Frieda from a grave mistake. I wish you well finding a bride in the auditions.” “Oh, I'm not here for the auditions.” Drew peered down at her. “I'm her for you, Miss Green. Sunshine of My Heart by Darlene Franklin had several lines I liked. This one is thought by potential bride Debbie, while she's getting ready for the auditions. On page 192 (already knowing that only Godly men were to apply for the auditions). Was is vain to want someone who was good-looking, who tickled her insides just by looking at her? Come What May by Patty Smith Hall. The line that left a tear running down my cheek is from Luke Collins on page 258. Cool evenings swinging with Chardy on the front porch, talking about their future and making plans. Holding hands in her father's parlor. Luke had fallen in love with Chardy there. Now those memories were of a life he couldn't have. Dime Novel Suitor by Carrie Fancett Pagels is the really good story of Caroline Kane, owner of the inn/restaurant, (the center of all the husband auditions) an over-worked widow (not looking for a husband) with five younger siblings to care for as well. I really loved the misunderstanding that is at the center of this story. One of my favorite lines is Caroline, thinking at the top of chapter four, page 328. Early June 1866 “Who'd have thought the image of a man washing dishes could be so attractive?” Louder Than Words by Gina Welborn is a most interesting story of a self-sufficient woman Jane Ransome, who happens to be one-quarter Shawnee. It is also the story of reporter J.R. Lockheart. The line I'm choosing to share is something J.R. says on page 384, just before his boss lets him go. “When I was fifteen, I started writing abolitionist pamphlets to end slavery. This morning I finished a three-page ballad about a butterfly. 'She was happy and fair, graceful and gay, sporting the summer of bright youth away-'” J.R. Groaned, unable to continue reciting the words he'd forced himself to pen. “I'm tired of writing about butterflies in hopes of temporarily distracting readers from the horrors none of us can forget.” I love the exciting way J.R. meets Jane. Another of my favorite lines is on page 404: This confident yet mysterious Indian maiden had a story to tell. Before he continued on to California, he'd find out what it was.
Bottom line. For me this is a great read, I recommend it to those who love post-Civil War fiction and Inspirational romance. You can take your time and read each novella slowly over several days or read it all at once like I did.
*I requested and received this book from the publishers through NetGalley for personal review. All opinions expressed are entirely my own. I was then given a print copy as a gift, I will treasure.
Seven Brides For Seven Mail Order Husbands is a wonderful set of seven delightful Historical tales by seven different authors. All the stories are set in Turtle Springs, in the aftermath of the American Civil War, and have the same core. It was wonderful to read seven unique tales about the same event. The stories all had similar themes of recovering from war, trusting God, facing fears, new beginnings and more. The characters were all warm and welcoming. Did I have a favourite story? No. Each one was a wonderful offering and I could not possibly choose. A perfectly delightful book. Abigail's Proposal by Cynthia Hickey is a most delightful tale to kick off the collection. It sets the scene for the tales to follow. It had a light hearted feel to it with wonderful warm and welcoming characters. It warmed my heart. The Kidnapped Groom by Susan Page Davis is another wonderful tale. It had themes of family, love and hard work. A wonderful feeling of community which I loved. A Clean Slate by Susanne Dietz is a delightful offering. The American Civil War divided not only the country but families. The end of the war left heartache and anger. Families felt loss but also needed to extend forgiveness. Faith and forgiveness go hand in hand because we are all sinners in need of a Saviour. There were some wonderful moments involving the children. A real heart warming tale. Sunshine Of My Heart by Darlene Franklin is another delightful offering with a warm family feel to it. The war robbed people of so much and this story focuses on new beginnings. The past is gone but the future awaits. A wonderful read about the faithfulness of God. "Wherever we are, God is there - He doesn't change." Come What May by Patty Smith Hall is a tale showing how God is the God of restoration. We need to trust that His plans are so much greater than ours. We do not need to shoulder our burdens alone. There is a wonderful family feel to this tale and I adored it. Dime Novel Suitor by Carrie Fancett Pagels is a delightful offering about following God's plans. It has a real fairy story element to it with the arrival of an Englishman in Turtle Springs. There is a mix up in communication which is obvious to the reader but oblivious to the characters. A delightful tale that will warm your heart. Louder Than Words by Gina Welborn is another wonderful tale which I found had Jane Eyre and Mr Rochester undertones at times. The story has many godly themes including those of trust, grace and fear. "You've limited God's grace to man-size proportions... and allowed your fear to grow into God-size proportions." We need to take our eyes off our fear and put our trust in God. Faith and fear cannot exist side by side. There was a wonderful warm community feel and this was a perfect end to a fabulous set of stories. I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.
What a unique story line. I loved how all seven authors wrote about the same town at the same time and the characters appeared in each story. I also found this to be so fun to read. At times I was laughing so hard as I read and then crying at other times. It was like I was right there in Turtle Springs, Kansas.
Seven Brides for Seven Mail-Order Husbands Romance Collection is a fun and sweet collection. When the Civil War takes the men of Turtle Springs, Kansas, seven women decide to post an ad for husbands.
Each woman has a story to tell in the collection. Which are: Abigail’s Proposal by Cynthia Hickey The Kidnapped Groom by Susan Page Davis A Clean Slate by Susanne Dietze Sunshine of My Heart by Darlene Franklin Come What May by Patty Smith Hall Dime Novel Suitor by Carrie Fancett Pagels Louder than Words by Gina Marie Welborn
I liked this book and I think it is one of my favorites of the romance collections that Barbour releases. All of the stories follow one another, which I enjoyed. They are all well written, keeping my interest throughout. I thought they all were great and I just can't pick one that I liked best.
Great collection!
5 stars
I received this book from NetGalley. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.
I only read Carrie's novella and Cynthia's novella. I am fans of both these authors and I enjoyed both of them.
I highly recommend this book just for those two novella's alone. I found my self lost in Turtle Springs, Kansas, not wanting to leave. Dime Size Suitor By Carrie Pagels was a page turner, I have to say the only bad thing was it ended way to soon for me. I wish just a few authors had wrote this in place of seven different ones.
Abigail's Proposal by Cynthia Hickey was the same for me, it ended way to soon for my liking.
After reading these two novella's in this book I have to say Great authors should refrain from writing novellas.
I gave these novellas' 4 stars if for no other reason pick up this book just for these two novellas'.
The Mary Reader received this book from one of the authors for review. A favorable review was not required and all views expressed are our own.
I read a lot of these collections. They all have sweet romances, some suspense and of course the joy of Faith. But this was the first collection that read like an entire book, a union of one theme. It was amazing. Truly just amazing. The War between the states, and many that followed cause the male population to decline, these authors gave such a fresh spin to history with their stories.
Men were sparse, the war had taken many to their early graves leaving a town of women, ran by the former mayor’s daughter. She has a brilliant plan to do a reverse mail order bride plan. Girl Power! Sorry, got excited thinking how cool it was to have all these women running a town smoothly, only wanting the company of a Godly man, and the prospect of building their family. They did NOT need them to run the town, this made the collection instantly a favorite for me. It had all the elements that make a romance, a favorite read for me.
The stories were all based around the theme of interviewing the men, finding love and strength. So to my surprise I was finished within a day, and felt as though I had just read the best new romance story. Each story was their own characters, and plot. But they blended they flowed together. It was as though all these authors sat around a table and compared notes, researched, formed and created together. It would be hard to say that I had a favorite, but Suzie’s story with the school teacher was wonderful, and of course Cynthia Hickley’s story set the bar high for these stories.
It will be hard for a collection to come along and surpass this one. It was exactly what the publisher needed to create for its readers. I think all these authors need to work together on at least five more collections such as this.
Seven Brides For Seven Mail-Order Husbands Romance Collection By: Cynthia Hickey, Susan Page Davis, Susanne Dietze, Darlene franklin, Patty Smith Hall, Carrie Fancett Pagels, & Gina Welborn Seven Brides For Seven Mail-Order Husbands is a romance collection by seven different authors and seven difference novellas. I really loved all these novellas and the authors all did a fantastic job of pinning each novella. The war left Turtle Springs, Kansas with very few men . The ladies decided a way to build their town back up and help them too was to post ads for Mail-order husbands for women of Turtle Springs. Some women was really hurting with their children and a farm they could not work. These women all had different reasons for wanting a mail-order husband. All these novellas are the authors each telling a story of a bride . The novellas and the characters both were well written and well developed. I was given a complimentary copy , but was not told that In had to give a positive review.
When the lady mayor of Turtle Springs, Kansas sets out to help the female population of her community all kinds of things happen. What's the plan? It's to have auditions for husbands for the single or widowed women in her town. As the War between the States has taken the lives of many of the men of Turtle Springs, an advertisement goes out and brings in many candidates and possible choices for the many women left in town.
I liked these seven stories which all were woven together as one to show the events in the lives of the people of Turtles Springs. Each story seems to build into the other. These were all sweet romances during the historical time period of the mid 1800's when life was a bit more rugged.
The stories, although with a common thread, were each different and unique which keeps your interest going throughout the book. I enjoyed the Christian themes throughout and was glad that I had an opportunity to read this delightful series of novellas.
Disclosure; I received a complimentary e-book copy of this book from NetGalley for my honest review which I have given. All thoughts are my own.
When residents of a small town in Kansas, primarily Civil War widows, decide that drastic action must be taken to locate more able-bodied, God-fearing men, they make a very bold move; solicit mail-order husbands! Mayor appointee Abigail Melton posts a newspaper advertisement describing their very respectable form of "husband interviews"; and Turtle Springs is inundated with bachelors.
Enjoy every one of these delightful tales about love-at-first-sight . . . . . or not! It's an outstanding collection!
This book was a collection of seven novellas by seven different authors ... and a "hard to put down" book!! The story concept is a flip on the mail-order bride idea. After the Civil War, many women found themselves widowed with farms and businesses to run alone ... and no men in their towns to meet. So in this Kansas town, the women decide to advertise for husbands to meet and interview ... and soon the town is filled with potentials. ... I loved every story in this book, each focused on a different woman in the town, her life and her story of meeting a new husband. Many had unexpected twists and turns ... and I loved the spunky women in all the stories.
Truly an amazing collection of novellas. Each one introduces someone else from Turtle Springs and what is happening in their lives as well as their place in the community. Excellent stories bringing a closer look at the aftermath of the Civil War and its effects on a town of women left alone. Highly recommend.
I loved this spin on speed dating! The women of Turtle Springs, Kansas are to be admired for their strength and determination to live. Each story in this collection is a delight! I highly recommend this book.
I love these collections, they bring together such wonderful authors, who showcase their many talents. This collection is about seven women who want husbands, and they figure out a unique way of going about finding said husbands. I love these authors, especially Carrie Fancett Pagels, whose story is wonderfully witty and charming. I highly recommend this book. If you don't know some of the authors, this is a great way to get to know their writing style.
I was given a copy of this book from NetGalley. I was under no obligation to give a positive review and this is my honest opinion.
Seven Brides for Seven Mail-Order Husbands Romance Collection 1866...Turtle Springs, Kansas....Since most of the men didn't return after the War Between the States the women decided to advertise for husbands to revive their small town.....Ad: “Wanted: Men to audition as husbands. Turtle Springs, Kansas. Auditions held May 25, 1866. Only Godly, upstanding men need apply. Check at Mayor's Office.”
-1..Abigail's Proposal by Cynthia Hickey One of the first things Abigail Melton did as the town's new mayor was to encourage the ladies to place an advertisement for mail-order husbands. However, she needs to hire a sheriff first before those potential grooms arrive and so she hires a drifter, Josiah Ingram...single Josiah. Josiah is adamant he is not looking for a wife. Fun story watching Josiah as he “runs” from all the eligible ladies after him and Abigail as she searches for the right groom. Who will she choose and will Josiah really remain single and move on?
-2..The Kidnapped Groom by Susan Page Davis This story brought lots of chuckles. Who would have thought two very young boys capable of kidnapping a cowboy—Sam Cayford—at gun point and taking him home to marry their mother? What a surprise for, not only Sam, but for their mother, Maggie Piner as well. Of course, this happens right at the start of the mail-order husband interviews and Maggie had decided to participate in. A fun, heartwarming story.
-3..A Clean Slate by Susanne Dietze Schoolmarm Roberta Green is not taking part in the mail-order husbands interviews. She gives her heart to her students. However, a new “student”, Drew Cooper, just may win her heart—and far more. It was fun watching as Drew became Roberta's star pupil.
-4..Sunshine of My Heart by Darlene Franklin Debbie Barker and her family live on the prairie not far from the small town of Turtle Springs. Debbie has chosen Zack Gage as her potential mail-order husband and he has come to see if he will like a life on the ranch. They both have much to learn when it comes to ranching and even love. Will love bloom and grow? A fun, heartwarming story.
-5..Come What May by Patty Smith Hall Chardy Stevens certainly has her hands full caring for her four rambunctious younger brothers and running her deceased father's store. What she needs is a husband to help her, but she doesn't have time to look for one. Besides, she is still in love with her childhood friend, Luke Collins. Disabled veteran Luke doesn't see himself as a whole man and certainly not a man Chardy needs to marry. How would he provide for her and her brothers? Circumstances bring about a chance for Luke to help Chardy with her brothers that just may also open his eyes to other options for himself—and possibly Chardy. Great story of healing, second-chances and love.
-6..Dime Novel Suitor by Carrie Fancett Pagels Widow Caroline Kane has no plans in participating in interviewing for a husband, she has enough to do running the restaurant/inn and caring for her siblings. When Britisher Barden Granville shows up and asks for a job she suspects him to be a potential mail-order groom her sister has set her up with. When in fact, he is in America on a “cowboy holiday”. There is far more to Barden than his adorable British accent as Caroline soon discovers—and some yet to be discovered. I loved watching the interactions between Caroline and Barden. Could it be that God has plans for Barden to stay in Kansas as the new vicar after all? Fun, heartwarming story.
-7..Louder Than Words by Gina Marie Welborn J.R. Lockhart arrives in Turtle Springs to write about the men and women participating in the mail-order husband interviews. What he finds may be more than a story. Jane Ransome ends up helping J.R. meeting those around town for his article. Could he be the husband she is waiting for? But he is not one of the mail-order grooms and he is not staying in Turtle Springs. Then he surprises her in an unexpected way and...well, not telling. Cute, heartwarming story.
(~I bought this book and was also gifted a book from one of the authors, (no monetary gain were exchanged), this is my honest review~)
What an enjoyable read! These women knew the the life that was handed them was too much to handle on their own with children, farms and businesses without a husband. So they create an advertisement for mail order husbands to attend auditions for potential spouses.
I had a hard time setting this book aside. Being familiar with all of these authors it was exactly what I expected, which was to draw me into the hearts of each and every woman and man in search of a secure future. God was in attendace at these auditions and knew what was in each and every heart involved. It was definitely not an easy transition for anyone but with trust in the Lord and hard work a new future was could be seen.
When most of the men of Turtle Springs perish during the Civil War, the women of the town agree to place an ad in newspapers all across the country seeking “Godly, upstanding men” for husband auditions. Seven Brides for Seven Mail-Order Husbands follows the journey of seven of these women in short stories written by seven talented authors.
I'm gonna start off by saying I don't usually gravitate towards Civil War era books, but 'Seven Brides for Seven Mail Order Husbands' has so many great authors and such an intriguing premise that I just had to read it! And I'm so happy that I did! What a fun collection of stories! There's a lot of mail order bride books out there, so I loved this twist on the traditional story. I had a great deal of fun visiting Turtle Springs, Kansas and reading these seven delightful stories! There's something for everyone in this collection and I'd highly recommend it for anyone who loves historical fiction!
Abigail's Proposal by Cynthia Hickey Abby had to step into the role of mayor when her father didn't return home from the war. A year later, to help the town out, she comes up with the idea of placing an ad in search of husbands for the many widowed and lonesome women of the town, who readily agree with the plan. But first they need a new sheriff in town in case the sudden influx of men bring trouble. Josiah's just passing through town when he's mistakenly assumed to be applying for the job of sheriff. He's not looking to settle down, but with a town full of women on the hunt, will he be able to stick to his guns? This was a delightful story that perfectly sets the stage for the remaining six. I liked reading about Abby, who's a very capable mayor. And Lucy, Abby's sister, is something else! There were lots of laughs and a bit of danger.
The Kidnapped Groom by Susan Page Davis Sam Cayton is just passing through town, looking for a job on a ranch when two young boys “kidnap” him to marry their mom. Maggie needs to find a husband before she loses the ranch and so she reluctantly agrees to participate in the husband auditions, hoping she'll find a suitable man. She's shocked when she walks into to her home to find a strange man in her kitchen and her boys pointing a shotgun at him, proclaiming they found her a husband. Oh, this story was a joy to read! From the mischievous, yet well-meaning boys, Fred and Benjy, to honest good guy Sam to hardworking and steadfast Maggie, I couldn't get enough of this story!
A Clean Slate by Susanne Dietze Schoolteacher Roberta “Birdy” Green has no interest in participating in the husband search. New to Turtle Springs, Drew Cooper stops by the schoolhouse looking to borrow some books in hopes of bettering his education. After miscommunications and misconceptions, can these two find a love they didn't even know they wanted? This was a sweet romance. Drew's a great guy and Birdy grew a lot from the beginning to the end. I really loved this quote, “Thinking I was right didn't give me cause to act superior to you...” How true is that statement and how often do we tend to forget that?
Sunshine of My Heart by Darlene Franklin After finding one another during the auditions, Debbie Baker and Zack Gage embark upon discovering whether they're meant to be together. This was a lovely story. I loved how both Debbie and Zack made God, and a relationship with Him, a priority.
Come What May by Patty Smith Hall Chardy Stevens' dad died during the war, making her the sole guardian of her four rambunctious brothers and the proprietor of the mercantile. When the consequences of her brothers latest antics cause even more pressure for Chardy, she finally decides she needs help. Luke Collins, Chardy's former beau, lost his leg during the war and has been feeling down on himself, but could an opportunity to help Chardy and her brothers forge a path to rekindling an old romance? This was one of my favorites of the collection! It was so good! The Stevens brothers were an entertaining bunch. Chardy's got a great deal of loyalty and Luke's a man of great character. My favorite quote was, “What we've got to do is find the good in the here and now.” Loved it!
Dime Novel Suitor by Carrie Fancett Pagels Tumble Inn owner Caroline Kane's older sister confesses to contributing to the mail order husband ad in Caroline's name, infuriating her. She wants nothing to do with the silly auditions. Before settling down to life as a pastor in England, Barden Granville wants to give “cowboy life” a try and stops at the Tumble Inn looking for work. When the handsome and British, Barden arrives, Caroline believes he's there for the auditions. Can a miscommunication lead to the possibility of love? I completely adored this delightful story! It's another one of my favorites from this collection! There were some very fascinating bits of history touched upon that I enjoyed reading about. The elements of faith shined throughout and I loved Barden's sage advice and helpful “suggestions”.
Louder Than Words by Gina Wellborn J.R. Lockhart is in Turtle Springs to write an article about the husband auditions that will hopefully catch the eye of a newspaper on the west coast. Jane Ransome seems to know everyone and everything that happens in town, but has never felt a part of it. When Jane's appointed “hostess to the press” by Mayor Melton, she's very put out at having to keep J.R. company, escorting him around town. This was a wonderful ending to a fantastic collection! I instantly liked J.R. and while it took me a little bit to warm up to Jane, once she opened up, I understood her and liked her a lot. One of my favorite parts of this novella was Jane's friendship with Mr. Quimby and Mr. Underwood! So endearing!
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my own honest opinion.
Abigail’s Proposal by Cynthia Hickey My Review. This is the first story in the book and sets up the whole book. After the war there are more women than men and rather than let there town die the women decide to find husbands by sending out advert seeking God Fearing men. While Abigail is mayor she has agreed to look for a husband and in the meantime appoints Josiah as Sheriff. Josiah has no intention of getting married but is attracting attention from all the ladies so says he is engaged to Abigail which makes for an interesting time. With some the day of the auditions coming we learn not is always as it seems. We see just how trustworthy Josiah is and how level headed Abigail is also. A good start to the book. The Kidnapped Groom by Susan Page Davis My Review. This is my favourite story in the book. I could tell Susan had written the story as it is in her style of writing. I love how Sam is kidnapped by two small children who think they are doing right by their mother. They know she needs help and want her protected and also need some the love of a father. Maggie is horrified when she finds out what the children have done and then circumstances come into play. Add a banker who wants her farm and you have an interesting tale. A Clean Slate by Susanne Dietze My Review This books is about Birdy who is the schoolmarm who doesn't intend to get married but is out to protect her friend. She lost her fiance in the war and also has issues she needs to comfront. Drew wants to better himself he is estranged from his brother and wants to start a new. Throw into the mix Birdy's friends little girls who tend to be scene steelers. I have to admit I took awhile to warm to Birdy as she is a little controlling and can seem cold but as you learn her story you can understand why she is like she is. Sunshine of My Heart by Darlene Franklin My Review This is an fun story. Debbie wants to be married like her sisters. She moved west with her parents and wants to marry someone who will also help with the ranch. Zack came to the auditions because he no longer has anything left in Maine for him. Zack is new to ranching but has taken a real shine to Debbie and will learn for her. I love the way they both have so much in common and try to make a go of it. I got frustrated with Debbie's father at times. Another good read. Come What May by Patty Smith Hall My Review. I Have to say Chardy is one of my favourite ladies in these stories. She has her hands full with 4 younger brothers to look after and a store to run as well as a homestead. The boys have been expelled from school. Luke has returned from the war disabled and feels he is inadequate for anyone. Chardy needs help and Luke decides he can help her and in the meantime at least watch over her brothers and maybe help on the homestead. While there he confronts many of his issues. I love the interaction and what both learn about themselves. Dime Novel Suitor by Carrie Fancett Pagels My Review This is another story I really enjoyed I felt for Caroline as she too has so much she has to do she is responsible for siblings and trying to keep a restaurant and inn going and has an older sister who tends to meddle and not listen to Caroline. What is fun in this story is Barden isn't looking to be a groom, in fact has no idea about what is happening but through a misunderstanding becomes a suitor when he is actually applying for a job. Barden is just what she needs for the restaurant and also is so level headed and I couldn't help liking him. Once again we see Caroline struggle with issues that she needs to deal with to move on. Louder than Words by Gina Welborn My Review This is the last story and deals with a journalist who is moving west and writing stories on the way. He is interested in finding out more about the advert for husbands and why they advertised. He meets Jane who is happy in the town and wants to stay. She has been there for a few years now and wants to make it her home town. While she wants a husband and family of her own she also struggles because she feels she is not fully accepted due to her heritage. She has captivated J.R and I love how he works at trying to win her.
Check at Mayor's Office.” -1..Abigail's Proposal by Cynthia Hickey One of the first things Abigail Melton did as the town's new mayor was to encourage the ladies to place an advertisement for mail-order husbands.
~I received an e-book copy from one of the authors via Netgalley, (no monetary gain were exchanged), this is my honest review~
Thank you, author Carrie Fancett Pagels, for having a print copy of Seven Brides for Seven Mail-Order Husbands Romance Collection sent to me. Turtle Springs, Kansas April 1866
"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11 NIV
Dime Novel Suitor by Carrie Fancett Pagels Widow Caroline Kane is the proprietor of a restaurant and inn—and responsible for her five teenaged siblings. But she has no plans of finding a mail-order groom.
Britisher Barden Granville IV is on a “cowboy holiday” when he finds himself flat broke in Kansas. When he answers an old “help wanted” ad, Caroline misconstrues Barden is there as a potential husband. Will the beautiful and feisty widow cause the new vicar to make Kansas his home?
My Review:
How did I ever come into this? Caring for the Tumble Inn and my five younger siblings. Now that Pa's died, my older sister declares she is making decisions for us to better my situation. She has entered my name as a sponsor for bringing the ragtag (my words) to town for weddin'. And... she has offered the Tumble Inn for all of the commotions!
Caroline Kane has an adventure ahead of her. Have you ever been put in a situation, not of your own doings, that got you so wrapped up in it there wasn't even time to think about what was coming next?
Barden Granville has come to town for a cowboy adventure before continuing on to his British home. His first venture in Kansas City didn't work out exactly as he thought it would.... Innocence sometimes could turn ~ almost ~ deadly.
Spunky Caroline may have unknowingly met her match. Told the "auditions" are over, Barden finds he has arrived late. Has he missed his chance for the job he has come to apply for at the inn? Thankfully, Caroline says she needs help in the kitchen and Barden has declared he has been tutored as a cook by her friends in Kansas City. My, how that worked out well, filling both of their needs! And a room to boot!
Caroline is convinced her friends would not have sent him on if they did not approve. My, the advertisement all the way to Kansas City...
A comedy, indeed. This is what is known as a double-meaning.
"I'm Barden Granville, and I'll be responsible for dinner preparations here." He gave them what he hoped was a winning smile. "For the next six weeks at least." --Dime Novel Suitor, 323.
A trial period to see if he fits in...
The thrilling stories Barden had read in Beadle's Dime Novels carry him forward to his desire to find a cowboy experience in Turtle Creek on his holiday. Especially then finding there is a ranch nearby, and it is owned by... Caroline's sister and her husband!
"And I should have told you why I'd come to America." "Cowboy?" "Yes." --Ibid., 371.
This is a fun story with a lot of action and moving on as the family comes to seek advice from Barden. He has support from other kitchen staff as he prepares culinary feats for boarders and those stopping by to eat at the inn restaurant. He has other skills that endear him to those in Turtle Creek.
