Never Forget

Rate this book
Rose Island Lighthouse, Rhode Island
June 1880

Will she betray his trust to stay on the island she loves?

Abbie Watson is content to spend her days clamming, crabbing, and tending Rose Island Lighthouse. Her grandpa is the head light keeper, but his senility may lead to their eviction. Since leaving the island would kill her beloved Gramps, Abbie will do anything to keep him in the one place he knows and loves.

Wealthy Nathaniel Winthrop III’s wild living has gained him a reputation as the ‘bad boy’ among the elite social circles of Newport. After a blow to the head in a yachting accident washes him up on Rose Island, Nathaniel has no memories of his past.

Abbie tends the wounded stranger in her home only to realize he assumes they’re married. Although she knows she needs to correct Nathaniel’s mistake, his presence calms Gramps and provides a way to prevent eviction from the lighthouse.

The longer the charade continues, the harder it gets for Abbie to tell Nathaniel the truth, more so as she begins to fall in love. Everyone she’s ever loved has abandoned her. Will Nathaniel leave her too, once he discovers he’s not really her husband?

Jody Hedlund always transports me to the most wonderful locations. This time, Rose Island Lighthouse in 1880. We are introduced to Abbie, the youngest granddaughter of the Lighthouse keeper. Abbie wants to remain on the island but the superintendent's concern over her grandfather's senility and her wayward husband complicates matters. What Abbie has kept hidden is that she fears her husband might have died. When a mysterious stranger washes on shore with a loss of memory, Abbie wonders if this is the answer to her prayers.

After all, she’d already done the worst by marrying Nate Watson. Whatever else she had to do to keep Gramps on the island would be easy in comparison. Wouldn’t it?

I loved the characters and I just kept turning the pages. Of course, it's a premise that is quite ridiculous and yet I was so in love with the narrative

A fitting end for a delightful series.

Boy, does this story give its characters quite a dilemma! I was initially disappointed in Abbie's choice to deceive Nathaniel, and was surprised that she easily dismissed any concern for his family. However as she got to know Nathaniel she started exhibiting more feelings of conflict over her decision and taking his happiness into consideration. I admired Nathaniel's thoughtful insights and determination to use his second chance at life to become a better man. He developed a relationship with Abbie's Gramps and treated him compassionately, which spoke to his true character. There was strong romantic chemistry between Abbie and Nathaniel; he appreciated Abbie's strength and inner beauty, while Abbie realized that the goodness and kindness of Nathaniel showed how different he was from her former husband. The threats from a rival lightkeeper and a looming deadline kept the tension high as Abbie is desperate to find a way to prove that she can manage the lighthouse so she can keep Gramps on the island, all the while dreading the day she would have to reveal the truth to Nathaniel. Some of the twists kept me guessing how the story would end, but don't worry, this amazing series dedicated to female lighthouse keepers ends with a happily ever after in its final book.

I've yet to read a Jody Hedlund novel I didn't enjoy and this final book of the Beacons of Hope Series is no exception. Love how Hedlund takes historical facts and weaves them into her novels.

In Never Forget, Abbie is struggling to maintain the position for her family as light keepers of Rose Island. It's a tough road with a drunken husband and grandfather with dementia.

Never Forget, the fifth and final book in the Beacons of Hope series, is another beautifully romantic story by Jody Hedlund. Through their mistakes and mishaps, their bright moments and triumphs, these characters are utterly endearing. Abbie is determined to help her grandfather keep his place as the light keeper and will do anything to make this happen. When a man washes up in a wreck on their shores and can’t remember a thing, though she knows it’s not the right thing to do, she uses the situation to help her grandfather. Of course, this doesn’t go quite the way she planned, because the stranger is kind, handsome and willing to do anything to help both Abbie and her grandfather. The journey that ensues is one of tense scenes, tender moments and uplifting affirmations of faith.

I’ve so loved the settings of each of these books. I feel like I have a good understanding of all of the chores and day-to-day tasks that keep a lighthouse running. I found all of those details fascinating, and in this story, it was especially endearing how Abbie knows all about the serious maintenance of a lighthouse, but still maintained a sweet concern about her chickens. I love that Hedlund bases certain details on historical fact – make sure to read the Author’s Note because of the extra tidbits that make the reading experience more memorable.

The plot is engaging. I never felt it was moving too fast or too slow for the story. Truth be told, I couldn't put it down and read it in less than two days, which is pretty fast for me! Hedlund touches on some tough subjects with a deft hand, especially dementia, addictions and keeping secrets. As always, everything is tasteful yet realistic. The pain of the characters is tangible, yet nothing is gratuitous or overly dramatic.

As with any Hedlund novel, I must mention that loveliness that is the relationship between Abbie and Nathaniel. The ups and downs, hurts and tender moments all feel realistic and happen in a timely manner – talk about some amazing chemistry. And though I never questioned the happily-ever-after, there were moments that I was unsure just how this was all going to play out, and I love being surprised that way.

I’m sad to see the end of this series, but feel so happy that there were five full stories to enjoy. Never Forget and the rest of the series are certainly books that I will read again. If you enjoy stories with swoon-worthy romantic elements and realistic historical details, I highly recommend the Beacons of Hope series.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel, which I chose to review. This review is my honest opinion.

Never Forget by Jody Hedlund is a wonderful historical Christian romance. It is the fifth and final book in the Beacons Of Hope series but can be read as a stand-alone. I really loved it.
There are many themes within the novel including that of new beginnings. Everyone can have a fresh start with God. Our past does not have to dictate our future. We can have a new beginning with God as He cleanses us.
Tied in to the new beginnings theme is that of guilt and forgiveness. However we have previously lived, we know that we have been forgiven by God. We do not need to feel any guilt and we need to learn to forgive not only ourselves but others.
The sins of the fathers is not destined to be repeated for generations. "If he was destined to end up like his father, then what difference did it make how he lived or how good he tried to be?" We can break out of the cycle of sin with God's help.
There is the topic of prejudice and appearances. "Was he so quick to judge by outward appearances that he wouldn't look a man in the eyes and judge his worth there instead?" Too often we make snap judgements based on outward appearances. The reader is reminded that God looks at the state of our heart not the state of our clothes.
Life can be hard. We need God. God can give us the strength to face anything. "He could handle whatever came his way today, not in his own strength, but in God's."
The novel also deals with the topic of truth and lies. Sometimes lies are told with the best of intentions but a lie is always a lie. It is much better to tell the truth and face the consequences.
Likewise the evil one will whisper lies to us. "He was too lost, too unworthy, too undeserving to make his way back." We need to make sure we listen to God, the voice of truth. No-one is ever too far from God to be redeemed by Him.
Reality is blurred within the novel for one character with dementia. Jody Hedlund has obviously researched dementia as the character of Hosea is well drawn. He brings out feelings of protectiveness not only within the other characters within the novel but also in the heart of this reader.
Jody Hedlund shows the value of kindness within the novel. Kindness brings out the best in others. Kindness seeks to put others first. Kindness is closely linked to love and the novel lives out love as described in 1 Corinthians 13.
Never Forget was a powerful novel that spoke to my heart. I 'felt' the love and compassion of the characters, not only for each other but for all creatures great and small. Love radiated from the novel - love for God and love for each other.
The novel has its foundation in fact as its lead character Abbie is based on a strong, real life character from the nineteenth century. Some of the action also has a grounding in reality. Never Forget is a perfect blend of fact meeting fiction and I loved it. It was a fabulous novel with lessons from God for us all to learn.
I love Jody Hedlund's writings and can highly recommend them. I am eagerly awaiting more from her.
A wonderful warm read.
I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.

There’s so much more to this book than kisses, but my goodness there are some fabulous kisses too! Like… the kind of kisses that make you forget how to breathe. The kind of kisses that make you worry slightly that your toes will be permanently curled by the end of the book (totally worth it though). The kind of kisses that you go back and read again immediately after finishing them…. and then maybe once more (at least) for good measure.

Wowzah.

Ok… so … i did say there was more to Never Forget than kisses, didn’t I?

There is the richness of the historical setting and the depth of each character, both particular skills of Hedlund’s. From the dichotomy of Abbie’s grit and vulnerability to Nathaniel’s battle to live with integrity to Gramps’ meanderings in and out of dementia… these vivid characters evoke deep emotions from the readers and take up residence in the heart. These are characters I’ll be thinking about for a while.

Some gut-punching twists and turns will keep you on your toes (the ones that are permanently curled from those kisses!), but at every new bend in the path there is the steady truth that pulses throughout Never Forget – that no matter what your past, you can be a new creation in Jesus.

Bottom Line: Romantic chemistry off the charts! Kisses sure to melt even the most frozen of pearl-clutchers. A setting which perfectly complements the characters. Characters so dimensional you feel their joys and agonizings and fears and longings as clearly as if they were your own emotions. Life lessons that will linger, thanks to the beauty of the story. While I hate to see this series end, Never Forget is such a fitting finale and is without a doubt my new favorite of the bunch!

I really enjoyed this newest book by Jody Hedlund in her Beacons of Hope series. This book can be read as a stand alone. I have not read any of the other books in this series and did not have any problems following the story line.

I felt for poor Abbie in her struggle to keep her life from falling apart. In dealing with her Grandfather, she has to keep up a pretense that she never feels fully comfortable with. She's fending off a man who's trying to get her and her grandfather kicked off the island. And she's running herself ragged trying to keep up with the duties of the lighthouse. Then, to top it all off, she rescues a man from the water and her Grandfather mistakes him for her missing husband. Now she has another pretense to add to the list. Abbie has a lot of strength and character and although she makes some mistakes, she also changes and grows throughout the book and I really liked her.

Nathaniel is a swoon worthy hero! :) Although he starts out as a rich "bad boy", his amnesia brings forth a change of character and he sets out right away to be a man worthy of Abbie's love. He is so patient and tender with Abbie that she can't help but fall in love. The romance between these two is sweet and sparky. :) And he's so good with her Grandfather. When the truth comes out, he struggles with falling back into his old despondency and has to make the choice to turn to God for the strength to be the man he needs to be.

All in all, I believe you'll enjoy this sweet romance with some twists that will surprise you.

I was so glad to read another installment in this series by one of my favorite authors. I was not disappointed. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. As the title of the series suggests, Hope is the constant theme throughout the series.

Abbie Watson will do anything to maintain stability for her senile grandfather. He is currently the light keeper on Rose Island. As his inability to hold this position becomes evident to others, Abbie has to result to subterfuge so that they will not be evicted.

Nathaniel Winthrop III is washed ashore after a boating accident. He has temporarily lost his memory from a head injury during the accident. Through a few misunderstandings by Abbie's grandfather and the lighthouse superintendent, Abbie continues the misconception that Nathaniel is her husband in order to maintain their home at the lighthouse.

As their relationship grows, Abbie tries to end the subterfuge but does not know how. Will Abbie be successful in keeping this home for her grandfather? Can Nathaniel and Abbie learn to rely on God as the one true Beacon of Hope? Can Nathaniel learn that he can turn a page and live a new life?

This is a story with many twists and turns, some predictable but others took me by surprise...even at the end. Not only does Abbie fight the elements, carrying out rescues in the storms, she finds the strength to fight the storms and struggles in her life as well. I loved reading Nathaniel's story. It is a joy to see the admirable man of integrity surface as he attempts to live a new life.

This is the fifth book in the series, but can be read as a stand-alone.

Never Forget is a tremendous book. Reads like this one, I find difficult to review as it was so very good. It had all the elements of a great story. The storyline was tremendous. Not only is it historical fiction, but it has so many other wonderfully written subplots. Love, loss, mystery, suspense, and what I love most about Christian Fiction, a tremendous faith theme!

This fifth book in the serious sort of brings everything full circle and finishes off the series in spectacular fashion.

I don't care for long reviews so I'm going to keep this short, but so much more could be written about this novel. I will be purchasing it in paperback for my forever shelves. This is definitely a keeper!

I have thoroughly enjoyed the Beacons of Hope series. The fifth and final book was no less captivating. I have probably stated it before, but I will repeat that I love lighthouses and reading stories about them, even when the stories are fiction. This book kept my interest from the first page to the last as Abbie Watson desperately clings to every shred of hope to keep the Lighthouse Board from taking the light keeper position at Rose Island Lighthouse away from her Gramps. She has been doing the majority of the work since senility began affecting Gramps. The effects of the senility are heart-rending but Gramps experiences some good days as the story progresses. A character from the fourth book in the series plays a role in this story. Nathaniel Winthrop III is from an extremely wealthy family and has earned the nickname of Bad Boy of Newport because of his partying lifestyle. He is busy living up to that nickname when he gets clobbered in the head by the sail boom on his yacht and knocked into the bay during a serious storm. The story seemed to raise question after question in my mind as I read. How long can a young eighteen-year-old woman take care of a lighthouse and all the household responsibilities while also taking care of a grandfather who is becoming increasingly more senile? As she feels pressured to “live a lie” to be able to keep him as calm as possible and also to keep his position as light keeper, how does she even know the truth any longer? On top of everything else in her life, how is she going to take care of a man who has washed onto the beach of the island and wakes up with no memory of who he is and how he got there? If and when Nathaniel regains his memory, will he go back to his old lifestyle? I am fairly sure the point of the book was not to prove the old saying that “when you tell one lie, you have to tell another to prop that one up”, but I think that becomes quite obvious. The real theme of this series has been about hope. That message comes through clearly in this story. Never lose hope. Even if things don’t work the way you want them to, don’t give up hope. I enjoyed the action, suspense, romance, and faith portrayed in this exciting book. I recommend it to anyone who loves good clean historical romance. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Copy of this book.

Every time I crack open the pages of one of Jody's books I am left in awe. Her books consistently posses quality story and the characters reach out and grab my heart and emotions.

Abbie and Nathaniel's story will take you on the emotional ride of a lifetime. There were so many possible outcomes that I was furiously reading the last few chapters to see what happened. No matter the ending, the message of the story shines brightly and is unavoidable; In Christ, we CAN become new. His love and forgiveness can wipe away the past and we can start fresh. However, it is so much harder to turn away from the past under our own strength. That being said...No, I am not telling you how the book ends. I will tell you I screamed aloud several times, laughed, cried, and giggled like a schoolgirl before I finished.

One thing that I simply adore about Jody Hedlund, (I am sure I have said this before) is that she doesn't shy away from the truth. The Bible, Christ, faith, conviction, and redemption are all strong aspects of her writing. Her words move me and touch my heart in such a precious and powerful way. Even her "Author's Note" contains the power of Christ.

"He is always there offering you His hope, love, and forgiveness. Please, never forget all that He offers." - Jody Hedlund

Beacons of Hope has earned a position as one of my forever favorites. I am so sad to see its conclusion, yet Never Forget brings the series to a satisfying end. Following the Cross of Hope we discover so many lighthouses and learn about the REAL women who worked them. The journey has been rewarding, educational, and inspirational. I HIGHLY recommend these books! Each of the books can stand alone, however, reading them from the beginning will give you the full experience. When all is said and done, I pray that the message of HOPE speaks to your heart as it did to mine.

While I haven’t read all of the previous novels in the series, I eagerly picked up Jody Hedlund’s Never Forget. The premise intrigued me and I quickly became immersed in the story and invested in how things would turn out.

Abbie is a complex character who I initially had trouble understanding. Her love for her grandfather is obvious, as is her dedication to doing what she has to in order to keep him on the island, the environment in which he is most comfortable. But why doesn’t she just tell the truth? As the story progressed, I found that I could actually relate to the myriad reasons for why she did allow the misunderstanding to continue, and I found myself questioning what I would have done in her situation. What if I had put myself in a similar predicament?

The scenes with Gramps broke my heart several times; to love someone whose mind has betrayed them, to watch as they are confused, living in the past, mistaking you for someone you’re not is excruciating. The constant fear of what could happen is exhausting. The scenes are well-written and help readers better understand what families may experience when dealing with a loved one afflicted with memory issues.

I would recommend this book to those who enjoy historical fiction, especially romance fans and those who have an interest in historical lighthouses as there is much information on them within these pages. It has enough mystery to keep things moving along and several small twists toward the end that changed how I thought the book was going to end, several times over. Although it is the fifth and final book in the Beacons of Hope series, it can easily be read and enjoyed as a standalone novel.

I received a free copy of this book from the author through Celebrate Lit but no compensation for this review. I was not required to write a favorable one and the opinions expressed are both honest and my own.

"If any man be in Christ, he is a new creation . . . ", the Bible says.

Wealthy Newport playboy Nathaniel Winthrop, III certainly wants to begin his life all over again, especially after a violent storm sends him overboard the deck of his yacht, only to wash him ashore Rose Island with a nasty concussion and no memory of the man that he used to be. His wife seems to recall that he was a derelict husband, . . . . .wait a minute . . . his wife?

Abbie Watson is so relieved when the gentleman who washes up on the island, where she and her grandfather maintain Rose Island Lighthouse, regains consciousness. She never intended to fabricate lies about his identity, but when her future is viciously jeopardized by a neighboring light keeper, Abbie convinces her superintendent that her wayward husband Nate, has finally returned to assist them.

Allowing Abbie's anonymous patient to believe that he belongs with her, and her mentally deteriorating grandfather, is a terrible gamble; one that begins as a blessing in disguise, only to take a more personal turn, bringing several terrible truths to light, and threatening to wash Abbie's dreams completely "out to sea".

"Never Forget" is a rich, tender, and emotional romance between two people whose young lives are sadly riddled with guilt, fear, and painful regrets. However, on a much deeper level the story is a powerful reminder of the God who truly makes all things new, while loving his children unconditionally, and forgiving them for all eternity; a truth never to be forgotten.

Never Forget is the fifth and final installment in the Beacons of Hope series and it is absolutely fantastic! This book can be read as a stand alone novel if you haven’t read any other books in the series. But if you have read book four in the series, Forever Safe, you will recognize Nathaniel Winthrop III and be happy to see him receive his own story.

There were many things I loved about this book. The author did a great job of making me feel compassion for the main character, Abbie. Even though she spent most of the book allowing Nathaniel to believe a lie, I was able to empathize with the situation she found herself in. It didn’t justify what she did, however the abundance of difficult choices and dire circumstances put pressure on Abbie to try to handle things without truly relying on God’s help.

I loved the way Nathaniel got a new lease on life. He had fallen into a terrible way of living and the trauma he went through made him finally put all of his trust in God. It was amazing to see him turn his life around.

Never Forget had such a wonderful romance running through it, along with many twists, turns, and situations that seemed insurmountable. I loved this book from the very first page and it just got better and better as I continued reading. I highly recommend this wonderful story.

Never Forget is the fifth installment from Beacons of Hope series. Oh my goodness! This book is wonderful. If a reader wants to talk about a book that will make you swoon, then this is a book for them. The chemistry between Abbie and Nathaniel is undeniable. I felt a connection to them from the start. There are many twists and turns I definitely did not see them coming. I just could not put the book down. A great reminder why I love Jody Hedlund's writing so much.

I have thoroughly enjoyed each of the books in the Beacons of Hope series about keepers of lighthouses in the early years of our country. These men, and women, have lived strong, fearless lives on the brink of disaster as they maintain the lights that keep those on the seas safe. True, these are works of fiction, but they are based on true encounters, events, and personages.

In Never Forget the storm lashed yacht of wealthy Nathaniel Winthrop is in a perilous situation and Nathaniel is washed overboard while struggling to keep it afloat. He is found unconscious by Abbie, the young lady who helps her aged and dementia afflicted grandpa take care of the lighthouse. She takes him back to the cottage and nurses him back to consciousness though his memory is gone because of a blow to his head.

What follows is a sweet tale where Abbie tries to manage the lighthouse and her grandpa's condition and keep the superintendent of lighthouses from firing them from their position. The characters have situations and past decisions in their lives that really clutter their ability to move forward but they find that regardless of their past actions, there is hope in Christ and new beginnings.

The title is apt given the sweet grandpa's dementia and how it affects those around him and also the amnesia Nathaniel endures from his accident. But it is also true that we should never forget the hope that awaits us in Christ.

Abbie Watson is the caretaker for both her Grandpa who’s losing his memory & the lighthouse she loves. One day she finds an injured man—Nathaniel—washed up on shore and tends to his care. Grandpa thinks him her dead husband and she’s reluctant to correct him. The stranger has lost his memory due to a head injury and also thinks himself to be her husband. How long can she keep up the charade? Will she lose everything dear to her heart by her deception or will God work it all out in the end?

This is the fifth and final story in the Beacons of Hope series and stands alone well. But what I love about series novels is all the different characters you get to know along the way. Nathaniel Winthrop the 3rd was a character I did not care for throughout the books, he was selfish, rude, and lived a lifestyle that pegged him as the “bad boy”. With the previous book, I began to see a slight changed in him that gave me hope. In this novel, the author does a complete re-invention of his character! The memory loss not only changes him due to not knowing who he is, but also softens his heart to all things pertaining to the Lord. Convinced he’s Abbie’s husband and not being worthy of her love, he’s determined to win her over with a complete 180-degree turnaround. He becomes the loving “husband”, finding small ways to win her heart back. As for Abbie, I loved her character! She does what it takes to handle what life throws at her; caring for her grandpa, the lighthouse and the stranger. Her only flaw, deceiving both men in her life! She reassures herself it’s for a good reason, Nathaniel is a positive influence for her grandpa. When he spends time with the old man, he’s more lucid and aware. But she knows one day that will blow over like the storms that sometimes happen on the island! And when that happens, will she be prepared to pay the consequences?

The other thing I love about this author, is how faith plays out in her stories! Through Abbie’s reliance on God, it sparks a flame of faith in Nathaniel and begins his journey with the Lord. She also shows us that no matter our past sins and flaws, God can make a new creation out of our lives! This is a well-written story, with characters you feel like you’ve made friends with, and sprinkled with glimpses of faith to strengthen your own walk with Christ. If I were to describe her writing, I would pen them as faith-filled stories of life changing redemption. I look forward to many more adventures!

*happy sigh* Oh what a gloriously wonderful book this was! To be honest, it's been a long while since I devoured a book as quickly as I did this one. I read the first quarter one morning and then the next I finished it in practically one sitting. I was so wrapped up in Abbie and Nathaniel's lives that I couldn't bear to leave.
I didn't have a high opinion of Nathaniel after the previous book but he redeemed himself and more in this one. At the start, he'd actually gotten worse than when we last saw him, but a knock to the head gives him a clean slate. I loved the way he handled the second chance he was given! He didn't remember who he was but he knew he hadn't been living right and instead of just accepting that was who he was he determined to never be that man again. He turned to God and started being a better man. Honestly his words and actions had me melting into a puddle!
Abbie has been abandoned by people close to her more than once and as a result is a bit guarded. She has a fierce devotion to her grandpa and she works as hard as she can and makes whatever sacrifices necessary to help him, all without a word of complaint.
They were an entertaining couple, with Nathaniel convinced he'd been a horrible husband and trying to prove he'd changed, and Abbie knowing it was all fake, doing her best to distance herself, yet falling for him anyway. There was obstacle after obstacle thrown into the path of their relationship. But they somehow made it through each one to an ending that left me sighing with happiness!
I could go on and on about this book but I'll let you discover the rest on your own, trust me, you won't be sorry!

I like how each of the books in this series took a minor character from the book before and turned them into one of the leads of the current story. This story was about Nathaniel Winthrop, Victoria's former fiance from the previous book. I had liked Nathaniel, though I found him a little 'milquetoast' in "Forever Safe", which is why his opening scene in this book surprised me. He'd apparently decided to 'live for himself' between the end of that book and the start of this one.
That said, I liked how he learned how to rely on God's grace for a new beginning throughout this story. I appreciated how 2 Corinthians 5:17 (Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: cold things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.) was the central theme for him, and ultimately for Abbie as well.
Ah, Abbie. Her choices made the circumstances she found herself in like reading about a train wreck from which you aren't quite able to look away. I knew the deception she'd perpetrated with allowing Nathaniel to believe they were married couldn't end well, but to see it all play out was even more cringeworthy than I'd expected.
However, there were twists and turns that I had *not* expected as well, and the bit of mystery towards the end of the book kept me turning pages, too. All in all, I enjoyed this book, though perhaps not quite as much as some of the previous in the series.

I have read every book Jody Hedlund has ever written. She closes out her Beacons of Hope series with this fifth book. It is a wonderful story, full of engaging characters, great locales and a plot that will keep the reader going until the last page is turned. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to her next book

A wonderful conclusion to the Beacons of Hope series. I have enjoyed learning about the lighthouse keepers and what they had to go through to keep the lanterns going. I especially learning about how often times it was the women that did the job even though they were not thought to be "able" to do it.
Abbie has been doing her best to be able to continue living on Rose Island and keeping the light so that her grandfather can stay on the island as well. She has even gotten married so that her husband can be considered the keeper since her grandfather can no longer do the job as he could before. Abbie's husband is not quite up to the job, so when a man washes up on shore and cannot remember who he is, she lets him believe that he is supposed to be there and passes him off as her husband.
I enjoyed seeing the growing relationship between Abbie and Nathaniel and how even though things didn't always work out in the timing they wanted, they managed to do what was eventually right to get done what had to be done.
I received an advance copy from the author, the review is entirely my own.

Never Forget is Book 5 in Jody Hedlund’s The Beacons of Hope Series. This book takes place in Rose Island Lighthouse, in Rhode Island June 1880. Abbie Watson is the granddaughter of the head light keeper of Rose Island Lighthouse and she will do anything to keep him there. Nathaniel Winthrop III is a bad boy from Newport, he suffers a blow to the head that washes him up on Rose Island. Abbie tends to Nathaniel only to have him think they are married and she can’t bear to tell him the truth. Having him there calms her Gramps and prevents them from being evicted from the lighthouse. Everyone that Abbie has ever loved has left her and she fears Nathaniel will leaver her also after he learns the truth.

Never Forget is a wonderful book and a great conclusion to the Beacon of Hope Series. Beautifully written historical fiction novel I have read in a long time. A story of love, loss, hope, forgiveness, and so much more. One you will enjoy reading over and over again. This book can be read as a stand-alone.

I received a copy of this book for free. A favorable review was not required. All opinions expressed are my own.

Abbie Wilson has to be one of the most self-sacrificial characters I've ever encountered in fiction. She is fiercely devoted to her grandfather's care, willing to do just about anything to keep him emotionally, mentally, and physically safe.

Nathaniel Winthrop III is caught in a cycle of bad choices and reckless living. I wanted to hold up a mirror for him or bop him in the head to knock some sense into him. Considering her desperate circumstances, I don't blame Abbie for failing to correct his assumptions!

Readers will love the charming the hodge-podge of critters Abbie has taken in on their little island as well as the powerful elements of sacrifice, loyalty, forgiveness, and love. I highly recommend this book and author!

Abbie Watson has her hands full keeping the Rose Island lighthouse running, as well as caring for her elderly grandfather. Although Gramps is spry, his dementia means that most days he doesn't recognize Abbie and thinks he's living a few decades in the past. Abbie is doing everything she can to hold their tremulous lives together, knowing any day they could lose their status as light keepers and be kicked off the island.

When an unknown man washes ashore after a storm, Abbie has no intention of tricking him or using his presence for her own gain. But when he wakes up and assumes he's her husband, it's a little too easy to pretend. Maybe having a young healthy man around will convince the superintendent to give them more time. Especially since Gramps seems much calmer and more aware of the present when the stranger is around.

Nathaniel can remember nothing about his previous life. He only remembers feelings of sadness and that he has disappointed people, but now he's been given the chance to start over with a clean slate. He realizes he must have been a very bad husband to have his wife behave in such a shy and skittish way around him, and he's determined that things will be better this time around.

What starts as an innocent mistake on Nathaniel's part soon grows to a situation beyond Abbie's control. Nathaniel really is winning her over, but now she has no idea how to tell him the truth. Is it possible that their budding feelings will survive when his memories return? Or will the fact that he's wealthy with a long list of bad decisions in his past make the divide between them insurmountable?

There were quite a few twists and turns in this story that kept me uncertain about how everything would resolve until the final pages. I enjoyed the theme of second chances, as well as one with which I have personal experience - not letting the actions of our parents determine the outcome of our own lives. This was a strong plot to wrap up the Beacons of Hope series!

A resounding conclusion to the Beacon of Hope series. I love the way the author honoured female lighthouse keepers in these books. Such an unusual angle for a historical romance. And there's something so alluring about life in the old lighthouses!

Abbie and Nathaniel's story is fraught with sorrow and complications that seem insurmountable. Just when I felt a glimmer of hope it would be dashed as sure as the waves against Rose Island's rocky shoreline. And, oh my goodness, but Hedlund kept me on tenterhooks the entire read.

I admire Abbie's gumption when it comes to eking out a living while tending to her ailing grandfather. Her dedication is both commendable and alarming. And that's because it clouds her judgment and infringes on Nathaniel's rights. He washes up on shore, injured with no idea of who he is or how he got there. Yes, Abbie rescues him, but in a sense she holds him hostage by allowing him to believe he's her husband because it plays into a wild and desperate scheme to help her grandfather. I had such a hard time justifying her actions the longer the pretense went on and that made it hard for me to cheer on their blossoming romance. To be fair to Abbie, she tried to keep her distance but Nathaniel isn't easy to ignore. :-)

He has a vague disquiet about the kind of man he once was and grasps this opportunity for a second chance to be the kind of man Abbie can be proud of. He reconnects with his faith and there's a beautiful inspirational thread that celebrates the power of forgiveness and God's loving grace.

And then it all comes tumbling down as I knew it would and things get a whole lot worse before they get better and there were twists that truly gutted me so I'm a bit of an emotional wreck now that I've reached the end. An emotionally charged conclusion to an awesome series.

While this story took me a little longer to get into, it ended up grabbing my attention and kept me up reading late tonight. Never Forget, the final book in the Beacons of Hope series, had me wondering what would become of these two! Abbie, while tenderhearted and hardworking, has entrenched herself with her lies. And Nathaniel has made several bad choices and is feeling the consequences. There are so many lessons wrapped up in this one; obviously honesty and living a godly life, but woven in are the threads of family, hope, forgiveness, trust, marriage and redemption.

I loved seeing Nathaniel transform and eventually Abbie too. Both had to make some hard decisions and trust God to ultimately work it all out. Their chemistry and affection felt very real and I enjoyed the moments between them. Fans of the series will delight in this last installment!

Can Nathaniel believe he has been made new in Christ and live it out? What happens when he discovers Abbie's deception? And what will happen when his past catches up with him? Can Abby trust God and find security in the fact that He will never leave her? Can she be brave and honest? And what about the threats she is receiving from Zeke? How will she care for her grandpa? And what about those rumors of treasure? I guess you will just have to read this one to find out!
