Rate this book
Lana Clarke just got asked out by one of the hottest guys in school. Toby Fitzgerald is undeniably gorgeous, but his charismatic personality makes Lana the envy of every girl at West Canyon High. Senior prom is right around the corner, and although Lana had planned on a stag outing with her friends, Ashlyn and Bennet, Toby asks her to be his date in the most romantic way ever. Her friends are bummed, but support her anyway. After all, Toby Fitzgerald is the boyfriend everyone wants.

Lana’s life is now perfect—until Toby breaks up with her three days before prom.

But he’s a nice guy, and he still wants to take her to prom as a friend. After all, they’d already rented a limo and picked out Lana’s dress together. Her friends think she shouldn’t ditch them for a guy who ditched her, but when she discovers Toby’s secret, she’ll have to choose between lying to her friends, or lying to the whole school.

**I received a copy of this book as part of the author's street team**

When the most popular guy in school asked Lana Clarke out, she thought it was a joke. When he asked her prom, she was thrilled. Her elation about her senior prom being one to remember was ruined when he broke it off without much of an explanation.

I was excited to read this book and learn more about Lana and why Toby Fitzgerald broke her heart. The cover is adorable. The story inside is cute. It wasn’t the best contemporary young adult novel that I’ve read, but it was an easy read.

Lana was a cute narrator. How poor she and her friends were was dug in the ground a bit, though. She sounded younger than her age, not like a senior in high school barely a month let until graduation. Her focus was on Toby and prom more than college and having to start figuring out what to do with her life. In my head I pushed her back to tenth grade or so and felt it fit her better.

The romance was almost non-existent. Sure, she had Toby, but it was more of a story about Lana figuring out what was right in front of her face. Instead of enjoying a book that had a heavy dose of kissing and longing looks, it had strong friendships and learning a little about life. Lana had gotten so caught up in thinking that she and her friends were the only ones at a disadvantage that adding a new friend into the mix forced her to rethink things.

Lana’s friends were the best part of this book. Lana, Bennett, and Ashlyn were like the three musketeers. The reason they were even considering prom had everything to do with making the most out of the high school experience. I really liked Bennett and didn’t understand how Lana didn’t see how he felt about her. I would have liked more between those two and can’t deny my disappointment in how slow things progressed between them. Ashlyn and Lana, the girls of the trio, were unstoppable. Their bond had honesty and trust and showed what a healthy friendship looks like.

Lana’s Ex Prom Date was a quick escape. The prose is fast and sharp, telling a sweet story of a girl that tried to make the best out of a slightly used prom dress and the wrong date to the dance.

Rating: 2.5 Stars - rounded up, because I cared enough about the outcome.

If you read the blurb, you would think this is all about Lana and Toby. In reality, this book is mostly about Lana and her friends. Toby is important, in that, he serves as a catalyst for what Lana ultimately discovers about herself, but I don't know about the whole "secret" angle.

What I liked:
I really liked the friendship that existed between Lana, Bennett, and Ashlyn. This trio of life long friends have been there for each other as part of the "single ladies" club (all are being raised by single "moms"). I liked the dynamic between the three, and wished there had been more focus there.

What I didn't like:
Some things seemed a little forced. The whole "I am poor" angle got a little old, and did not seem that vital to the story (in my opinion). I also felt like Sparling was hinting at something with Toby, but never came out and committed to it. Honestly, in the end, Toby's storyline was inconsequential to the entire point of the journey, so I was ok with how she presented his "issues".

Overall: Cute, quick read, with lots of filial love.

I do hope there will be a follow on book to this as I'm sure it will be brilliant and can't wait to find out more about the 3 of them.

Sweetest Book Ever!

This book is just so sweet and cute. I loved the three friends-Lana, Ashlyn & Bennet & the beautiful relationship they have. It's more about that than Lana's prom date and the confusion he makes for her.
When popular Troy asks Lana for a date, she is completely surprised. She's talked to him maybe twice all high school and really wonders if it is some kind of setup. But Troy is super nice and polite. Only Bennet has reservations about Troy and warns Lana to be careful. When Troy backs out of dating Lana, she is hurt. Wise word from her aunt and care from her friends help her. Plus, Troy still wants to take her. A surprising end will thoroughly delight!

I enjoyed this book. Reminds me a little bit of the Pretty in Pink movie with the ending around the other way. Still a good read

Lana

I don't know how I feel about this book. Was Toby asexual? If so, that's fine. I really had no opinion about Lana. She's not a MC I liked. Ashlynn and Bennett are fleshed out much better by the author. The prom storyline was, eh, not exciting. I'm glad this book was free.
