Trey Helton moved to Duluth to work as a prosthetist for the local hospital. Leaving behind a personal tragedy, he knew Duluth would be the place he could make a life and start to heal.
Allison Drakos was a college senior ready to graduate from the University of Minnesota Duluth. Going to school and working part-time filled her days, but Allison still found time to enjoy her last year with her sorority sisters, until the unthinkable happened.
Present…
Christmas Eve is a special day for Trey and Allison Helton. Not only is it the day they fell in love with each other, but also the day, six years ago, that they married. Their Christmas Eve routine has stayed the same for the last twelve years, but this year will be different.
Future…
Will next Christmas Eve give Trey and Allison a new reason to celebrate a life full of possibilities?
Katie Mettner wears the title of 'the only person to lose her leg after falling down the bunny hill' and loves decorating her prosthetic leg to fit the season. She lives in Northern Wisconsin with her own happily-ever-after and spends the day writing romantic stories with her sweet puppy by her side. Katie has an addiction to coffee and dachshunds and a lessening aversion to Pinterest — now that she’s quit trying to make the things she pins.
This novel is part of the Sugar Series but I can testify that you can truly read this as a standalone novel because I have not had the pleasure of reading any of the other books in the Sugar Series. I can assure you however I will be reading more in this series in the future because the novels are so well written, as all of Katie’s books are, and the characters are so interesting. In this novel Allison Drakos is a college student in her hometown of Duluth. She is a senior studying to be a librarian because she loves all types of books. I immediately identified with her in that I love to read as well and could spend all day in a library or a book store and be perfectly happy. As long as there is an endless supply of coffee of course. Allison doesn’t really date in college because she feels that the college boys are not that much more mature than they were in high school so she sticks to her studies. One afternoon while she is visiting the library she works at to work on her book blog she meets a handsome new doctor in town named Trey Helton. They immediately hit it off as she recommends some books for him to check out and they go to dinner. After dinner they make plans to see each other again as soon as possible. Fate takes a turn for the worse as, after Trey drops Allison off at her dorm, she is abducted by a man in a mask and ultimately taken back to a frat house as part of their hazing ritual. She is not sexually assaulted but she is forced to undergo humiliating torture before they finally let her go. She is taken back to her dorm and thinks it is all over until she is hit by a car! Feeling like she is surely going to die she does the only thing she can think of and that is to call Trey. Although they have only been on one date she knows in her heart he is the only man she needs at the moment. Trey comes to her rescue but when they arrive at the hospital it is clear that Allison is very lucky to be alive and, with the injuries to her back, she may never walk again. Because Allison’s parents live in a house with more than one story it would be difficult for her to live with them after she is released from the hospital so she accepts Trey’s offer to live with him. The two grow closer and closer by living together and Trey helping Allison adjust to her new life. Will Allison learn to trust that Trey loves her no matter if she is in a wheelchair or not? Will she be able to accept that she is still worthy of love even if her life has taken a different turn than she expected? Will Trey be able to convince Allison that his love is true and he wants to spend the rest of his life with her? Will they ever really know what happened that night of the wreck? Find out in this heartwarming story of trust, finding faith and true love. I read this book in one sitting it was that good. I couldn’t put it down. I really believe in soul mates and destiny since I feel that my husband and I are soul mates but even if you don’t you will after reading this book. This story will make you believe in love at first sight and true love like no other. I give this book 5 stars! This is a must read.
Review: When I picked up "When Christmas Comes Again" by Katie Mettner, I was immediately drawn into the enchanting and heartwarming world of Allison and Trey. The story takes us on a captivating journey through their past and present, seamlessly weaving together the threads of time to reveal how their love story began and how it was ignited by the magic of the Christmas season. From the moment Trey arrives in Duluth, Minnesota, his unexpected encounter with Allison sets the stage for a tale that is both tender and thrilling. The way the narrative flips between different timelines kept me hooked, as each revelation about Allison’s past and her challenges was like uncovering a hidden mystery. Her story of resilience and strength is truly inspiring, particularly as she navigates life in a wheelchair while reflecting on the events surrounding her injury and the aftermath. These events are portrayed with such authenticity that I felt every emotion alongside her. The romance between Allison and Trey was beautifully crafted and felt incredibly genuine. I appreciated how Allison’s desire for Trey to live life to the fullest was balanced with her own need for independence and self-discovery. Their relationship was a delicate dance of love and understanding, highlighting the theme that love truly conquers all. The characters felt so real to me, and their individual growth, as well as their growth as a couple, was depicted with great depth. It was refreshing to see them navigate their relationship with a sense of maturity and mutual respect, building a strong foundation for their future together. One of the aspects I loved most about this book was the range of emotions it evoked. From the subtle flirting and romantic gestures to the more profound moments of loving promises and spicy encounters, the story was filled with heartwarming and tender scenes. Yet, amidst all the romance, the strongest emotion I felt was hope. Throughout the book, from the first page to the last, hope was a constant presence. Whether it was Allison’s hope for a brighter future or Trey’s hope for a life filled with love and happiness, this sense of optimism permeated every chapter. It was a reminder that no matter the obstacles, there’s always a glimmer of hope waiting to guide us through. Katie Mettner has truly crafted a remarkable tale that resonates deeply, leaving the reader with a sense of warmth and joy long after the story ends. Opinionated Book Rating: Originality: 5.0/5.0 Plot Structure: 5.0/5.0 Pacing: 5.0/5.0 Dialogue and Narrative: 5.0/5.0 Personal Enjoyment: 5.0/5.0 Overall Rating: 5.0/5.0
When Christmas Comes Again is a wonderful reminder that with trust, love, and accepting help will write your story and everything you go through is a chapter working it’s way to a happily ever after. Trey and Allison’s story will warm your heart. Love at first sight seemed to set the path for many happy chapters, until a senseless act changed both of their lives and has her wondering if Trey will get tired of caring for her. His encouragement , love and support is who he is, but when a major issue happens to him, the stress could tear them apart or can make them stronger. Once again, I love that Author Katie Mettner’s character sometimes struggles with disabilities, but they work together to make it easier and to accomplish their goals. This book switches from present day to 13 years before and in doing so gives us the full story of how the wonderful characters learn to lean on one another in order to have a future
Trey moved to Duluth to start over after difficult past. He meets Allison who is a College Student. They form a bond and relationship after a horrible incident during her Senior year. Years later she is still troubled by her past, but Christmas has been special for her and Trey, it is the day they married. Will she be able to finally put the past to rest, and continue to have a wonderful Life with Trey?
A fantastic original story told in alternating time periods, her College years and the Present. With attention to detail, and engaging dialog I was brought into Allison's world, feeling every emotion she felt. Both Allison and Trey are very likable, the have a special love for eachother. I highly recommend to those who love a sweet romance.
This was an interesting story that goes back to the past to explain the current situation. It is interesting how the author took what was happening in the present to bring back different memories. Knowing the whole story made it easy to connect with the characters and understand why Alison was afraid of the future. It was definitely interesting to see how much she and Trey love each other and the strength/perseverance Alison had to move forward. Trey is so sweet and truly did anything he could to care for her. I loved when she stood up for Trey’s job. You have to read this sweet love story. I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Thank you to the author for this free book in exchange for my honest review of When Christmas Comes Again. This is the perfect Christmas read! It was an interesting read that follows Alison and Trey. The book goes back to the past, so that it can explain what is happening in the current situation. This was written really well and every character in this I enjoyed. I really liked how Trey did everything he could to help her. Overall, this was a sweet love story that I highly enjoyed. I would recommend it to any reader who loves a good read.
Absolutely delightful. It’s weird to say that when the story holds so much pain, but this author is simply amazing. I haven’t read anything she’s written before but I happened across this book and I couldn’t put it down. There is so much devotion, love and kindness in Trey’s love for Allie. I wasn’t sure I would like a book that went back and forth but I can see it couldn’t be written any other way and the author made it seem seamless. I haven’t read anything already bought the first book in the Sugar series. I’m sure I will read this book every Christmas.
Katie has done it again. such terrific characters, showing we can choose our families, and also the different ways we show love for each other. a librarian & Dr. fall in love. shortly after beginning dating, she is in a horrible accident. The accident was the result of a frat prank gone bad. The dr.develops tools to help her recover. the book follows the couple through several years, as they help each other through dating & marriage &;many life challenges. Very relatable characters.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I haven’t read any of the other books in this series (yet) and I’m aware this is like book 5 but I feel it’s perfectly able to be read as a standalone.
Going back and forth between the past and the present was well done. I liked how we started out in the present and went back to find out what happened in the past to Allison and how her and Trey met and fell in love. Plus I just really love a good Christmas book.
The completion of this book was a bitter-sweet moment. Bitter because it seems to be the end of the series, yet sweet because we get to see the story behind these 2 lovable characters. This story was just another reminder that people don’t have to be perfect, but they do have to put in the time and trust to make love perfect!
This story is about how love and support are strong enough in a relationship to help the couple get through anything. Trey and Allison's story is an emotional read, especially when we learn of the challanges they started to face shortly after meeting one another.
I received a copy of this book from the author. My review is honest and voluntary.
When Christmas Comes Again is all about trust, love, and accepting help. It was love at first sight for for Allison and Trey. Their story is an emotional read that had me crying and wanting them to fight for their relationship. This is the last book in this series, but it can be read as a stand alone. I loved this story and it's a must read.
Going from past to present with a few scenes , this book is suited for adults not young adults. The story line was very good. After Allison is left for dead, she calls Trey. He helps her to face life with her disabilities.
This is such a sweet book. I fell in love with Trey. He’s so caring and empathetic. Allie is a strong woman who was horrifically assaulted. She worked hard to get where she is. It’s a sweet meet cute that turned into a beautiful love story.
This is a wonderful, emotional romance. It deals with the way we see people with disabilities. It is a heart-wrenching story that will tug at your heart. It is also a story of hope and love.
I didn't care for going back and then forward in time.
I found it hard to go backward and then go to current events. The concept was good but I would advise the readers about how it floats and back and forth.
there's something about reading a book where you actually relate to the characters like the author peered into your mind. this story was sweet with raw emotions, truthfully displayed how trauma can affect you years after but it doesn't have to define you.
Wow! This is such a beautiful and heartwarming story. Trey's love for Allison shines through the pages. It changes timeline from the present to the past so we can see their journey together. Perfect book to read any time of the year.
An uplifting story of trust, love, and acceptance even if you're not sure you deserve any of it. Book 5 in the Sugar Series, but stands on its own. It's the first in the series that I read.
Will Trey and Allison find happiness ever after? A chance meeting and it was love at first sight. Their lives are disrupted when Allison is involved in a tragic accident which leaves her in a wheelchair. The story is a very emotional one filled with challenges for both of them. I love the way the story begins in the present and then shifts back 13 years to the period before the accident. The disability is handled sensitively and is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. The story drew me in, and the characters are wonderfully crafted. The end left me believing in love at first sight and happiness ever after.
I Read this under the title, When Christmas Comes Again. The story was okay. I liked certain parts of it, but didn't really care for the writing. I didn't feel an emotional connection to the characters.
When Christmas Comes Again (The Sugar Series, Book #5) (previously titled Trusting Trey)
I Loved this so much!! 🖤
Boy, did I make a mistake - I started this book late in the evening and couldn't put it down until I read it in it's entirety and upon finishing the last page noted the time was 2:33am and Oh, my, gosh, I'm not sorry; this was such a beautiful story!
Also, I didn't realize this was part of a series. 5th in a series in fact, so to let you know, you can most definitely read it as a stand alone and be up to the wee hours in the morning not wanting to put it down until you read the very last word ;)
