Palindrome 656: The Palindrome Series, Volume 1

Rate this book
When a ghost ship turns up in orbit after a half decade of silence, the powers that be are going to want answers. When you are the only person still breathing, you can expect an interrogation. Thus begins a sordid tale, told entirety by the last person alive to tell it.

Hannah, the Empires leading lady of counter-intelligence, is about to go head to head with the Union's best interrogators in a life or death battle to find the answers to some seemingly simple questions.

Whose fault is it?

What happened to the rest of the crew?

Where is the cargo you were bringing back?

The inner dialogue inside Hannah’s mind is sometimes amusing, always dark, but never dull. None of the stories she is about to share will paint her in a positive light, but in her case they rarely do.

Climb inside the cluttered mind of Hannah Reinier as she spins a web of near misses, last minute escapes and unconventional solutions to bad situations.

It’s said that the “Winners” write the history books. In this case, it seems Hannah is the only one holding a pen.

C.F. Waller

Award wining author C. F. Waller is best known for 2015 Reader Favorite Award winners SOUTH FACE and FREE DIVE. He recently released TOURISTS OF THE APOCALYPSE which was recognized by Readers Favorite in 2016, as well as Shelf Media.

He published his first science fiction novel at age forty-seven, after a flight on an ill-fated commercial airliner over the Atlantic Ocean nearly became an episode of Why Planes Crash. This experience illustrated for him first hand that writing about exotic or dangerous locales was safer than traveling to them. Since then, he likes to think his meticulous research and storytelling gives readers a clear sense of their grandeur, without the inherent risk of flying.

After narrowly escaping the academic death-grip of several universities, Charles worked in nightclubs, took a turn as a new car salesman, and also as a hurricane shutter engineer. His favorite authors include, Oscar Wilde, Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., and Michael Crichton. The later being especially close to his heart as Crichton epitomizes the tecno-thriller genre and the failure of humans to interact with technology.

Though he will forever be a Midwestern boy at heart, he now lives on the gulf coast of Florida with his wife, Tina, and one fuzzy feline companion. If he’s not working on a new novel, you can find him volunteering at church, playing overly competitive Yahtzee with his spouse, or indulging in an unhealthy addiction to competitive cooking shows on television.

Waller does it again...... what is it that he does? I’ll tell you, he completely blows me away. If you have not read anything by this author I encourage you to pick something up immediately. He always tells completely original stories and his characters are well thought out, sometimes lovable, sometimes not but you will never be let down.
When authors say that they are often asked that old boring ‘where do you get your ideas?’ Question this one makes me want to ask! I think I’ve read or listened to everything he has published.
Jazz/Hannah is hard to love and even harder to kill. She has more than nine lives and we just aren’t sure how high that number goes. Not even space can kill her. She denies she has human feelings but occasionally you get a tiny glimpse of them.
Sophie is her constant companion and the source of endless entertainment.
Wait until you meet these two!
While Jazz is a small woman I envision her as Charlize Theron. In my mind she is a bad ass lethal goddess!
I’d be so happy to read more adventures with Jazz but I’m also happy with how this one turned out.
Narration was spectacular. Not sure if Waller picks his narrators but they always do an excellent job. I will be looking for more by Charlotte Kyle. She has made it to the top of my female narrators list.
I received a complimentary copy of this audiobook from the publisher/author but voluntarily give my honest review.

I had requested and received audiobook version of this book for free from the publisher, in exchange for an unbiased review.

Hannah, the protagonist of this book, is one of the most well-written and interesting characters I've read in recent months. I love reading books with a strong female lead and when the character is so well developed and fleshed out, it is always a bonus. Hannah is mostly presented as a volatile character whose next action can't be predicted. But that's not her only trait. As the story progresses, we see different layers of her personality and it makes us really connect with her.

The story itself is well presented. Hannah's recounting of the events is full of twist and turns and most of them were actually surprising, stuff that I didn't see coming. You can say it was an "edge of your seat" thriller. Full marks for that.

The narration was just alright though. Sometimes it sounded monotonous and didn't sound like the narrator herself was enjoying the performance. Could've been better.

This is the re-release of Waller's epic Sci-Fi thriller, Palindrome 656. Newly edited and pared down very well, this story has everything: wit, humor, great banter, surprises, action, and sass. Hannah, our heroine, is now at the top of my all-time favorite protagonists. After being in space for ten years and being the only one to make it out of the entire crew, she's got nothing going for her but her will to survive. She's so strong yet so vulnerable, and she has a fascinating way of thinking and behaving that would excite any psychologist--which makes her a highly entertaining character for readers.

As the story develops, every twist and turn is a complete surprise. I mean, I was on the edge of my seat the ENTIRE time. This is one of those books that you just don't want to put down because you want to find out what Hannah is going to do next. I HIGHLY recommend this read, and I'm so glad the title is available again. Grab a copy of your own. Promise you won't be disappointed. :)

There was a bare minimum of sanity in this book but it was just enough to let me thoroughly enjoy it. The protagonist is a borderline psychopath and yet you can't help but like her. The story itself was simple but I like the way the author slowly unfolds the details through the protagonist's narration of her memory of the events. All the while, there is a game of greed and politics carrying out behind the scenes and it's interesting to see how it all plays out.
