Margaret Wise Brown wrote hundreds of books and stories during her life, but she is best known for Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunny. Even though she died nearly 70 years ago, her books still sell very well.

Margaret loved animals. Most of her books have animals as characters in the story. She liked to write books that had a rhythm to them. Sometimes she would put a hard word into the story or poem. She thought this made children think harder when they are reading.

She wrote all the time. There are many scraps of paper where she quickly wrote down a story idea or a poem. She said she dreamed stories and then had to write them down in the morning before she forgot them.

She tried to write the way children wanted to hear a story, which often isn't the same way an adult would tell a story. She also taught illustrators to draw the way a child saw things. One time she gave two puppies to someone who was going to draw a book with that kind of dog. The illustrator painted many pictures one day and then fell asleep. When he woke up, the papers he painted on were bare. The puppies had licked all the paint off the paper.

Margaret died after surgery for a bursting appendix while in France. She had many friends who still miss her. They say she was a creative genius who made a room come to life with her excitement. Margaret saw herself as something else - a writer of songs and nonsense.

I just love Margaret Wise Brown books. There’s just a calming that comes from the story and illustrations in every tale that connects to something in me and my children. I cannot rave about this author enough. If you’re looking for an author who won’t disappoint and books you can come back to again and again, look no further. They will surely bring joy to your children and home as I know they do ours and so many.

Perhaps you have to be American, or just at least have grown up reading Goodnight Moon to fully get it. I know that millions of people absolutely love this book, but sadly I'm never going to be one of them. I can see that it's cute enough, but it really doesn't wow me, and doesn't tug at the heart strings particularly. The nicest way to ""read"" it is to listen to Susan Sarandon reading it on youtube I think. This book includes two other books, also collaborations between Margaret Wise Brown and Clement Hurd. The third book, My World, is subtitled ""a companion"" to Goodnight Moon. Stylistically they are very similar, and Hurd has used the same palate with which to craft this book, but My World is a bit like Goodnight Moon on acid. It just doesn't make any sense. Runaway Bunny is a standalone book. A small bunny wants to run away from home. We soon learn why- his mother is completely restrictive in a cute, overbearing bunny kind of way. The feel is a bit like the claustrophobic Love You Forever by Robert Munsch. The illustrations are engaging though. All three books have alternating black and white then colour pages, not sure if that is typical of 1940s publishing or not, or just Hurd's style.

This collection of three books in one includes classic favorites featuring a sweet young bunny as the main character. All three stories feature themes of home comfort as the bunny is shown what a good home has. He sees what a mother will do for a son, he sees the comfortable elements of a bedroom at night, and he sees what elements of house and yard make up a happy home. The stories are simple and teach a simple vocabulary of objects that young children would be able to observe in their own homes.

Right now I love Goodnight Moon the most and want to read it over and over again. It doesn't usually put me to sleep...I'm just as likely to read it five times and then to run around crazy for a half hour, but...I do love it so and sometimes it does end with bedtime. Mommy really likes The Runaway Bunny...she wonders why I don't like that as much yet. Neither one of us like My World too much yet...that's the only reason I gave this collection 4 stars instead of 5.

I think that Margaret Wise Brown, must have been a very gentle person when she was alive.
