In Dad Genius, writer and cartoonist Dan Kenney offers a glimpse into how he, the most disorganized man on earth, ended up with the sweetest gig on earth....raising eight loud and obnoxious children. This endearingly honest collection of essays and stories is at times wickedly funny, at times incredibly touching, at times really weird, and is certain to make women all over the world say, "Thank God I'm not married to that guy."
I don't really remember which email or Facebook page said to download this book, and it was free for the day, but I'm glad I did. I'm a substitute teacher and this was a great book to read in between classes and the chaos kids create. It was funny, well written, and one of the most enjoyable non fiction books I've ever read.
This book started off rather slow because the author spent a lot of time on self deprecating prose. Once I waded through that part of this book, the writing became a bit more humorous and more enjoyable. Not that the entire book is meant to be funny, Dan Kenney also tells some poignant stories from his family's history and he relates those very well. It was a bit disconcerting that the Facebook Status quotes between each vignette only seemed to serve to break up the stories in rather odd and disjointed ways; the same way children interrupt a stay at home parent's daily life. This is probably the reason they were in the book since they had little to do with the actual story that the writer is telling. I do hope that the author keeps writing books for all ages. Some of these stories reminded me of Teresa Bloomingdale's columns when she wrote about her life was as a mother of a large family after growing up in a large family herself. I think people today would enjoy reading a similar monthly column from the stay-at-home dad point of view.
This book passed my expectations. I haven't laughed so hard since I can't remember when! But this is more than a book of humorous stories. The author relates tales of his own life; experiences that shaped who he is today. So not only did I laugh, I actually cried as well. But it doesn't stop there; learning from Dan's life experiences has helped me to understand others better, including my own (punk) son. But it doesn't stop there either! This stay-at-home dad has included some of his favorite recipes--so it's a cookbook, too!
