Kat and Alex are on the run when an unexpected visitor appears and takes Kat to face the Magesterial Council in Elustria. The Council reveals that Kat’s mother was a fugitive, and now Kat must uncover the truth of her mother’s crimes or stand trial as a co-conspirator. With only Alex and her best friend to help, Kat must race between worlds to discover who her mother was while dodging the mages who still hunt her. Time is running out, and failure means a lifetime sentence.
Magic Unknown is the second book in the Magic Born series and is intended to be read after Magic Born.
This picks up where the first left off. Kat finds out more about her mom and the life that Alex dragged her into. Characters grow in this wonderful story.
I liked the progression of this story as Kat discovers more about her familial roots. What I do have a problem with is how she accepts almost everything that is told to her about her mother. She knows that several of these sources have ulterior motives so why should she believe what they say without question? Casper is a known enemy, yet she accepts everything he tells her.
**Spoilers Following** The ending is a bit disconcerting. I thought Kat had been threatened by the Magestrial Council that she would have to pay the penalty for her mother's crimes. Then they decide she is innocent, even though her mother was guilty. What about that threat? Was that only if she failed to cooperate with them?
I haven't gone back to check but at some point (Book One?) Kat was told that she needed to have been to the destination in order to use either a portal or a teleportation ring (I forget which) It must have been the teleportation ring since Millhook was able to portal them to Oregon which had to be shown to him on a map. Later Kat questioned him on how he could portal them to Vienna and he explained he'd been there before. A contradiction? I don't know. On to the next book.
Edit: Okay, the above "contradiction" was explained near the beginning of Book 3. Sorcerers and fae can teleport anywhere without having been to a destination before. Only mages have this limitation.
A Better Read than Book 1 but You Still Have to Read the 1st First!
Charged with crimes against a magical world, Kat Thomas, human now mage with little to no training is faced with privileged birth mother's innocence or guilt and prove she isn't a part of it. No problem, right? She has just a few days to prove her innocence or be sent to someplace called the Vortex. Her only companions, a shifter who can instantly appear human or as a panther and a Fae by the name of Milhook and a magical talisman her birth mother created that she has yet to determine how to wield. Of course there's a guard at the door as well. Quite an adventure story with lots of intrigue, magic battles and battles of wit. First step, figure out what's hidden that the council holding her for trial couldn't find.
Oooh, I love where this is going! Also, the new characters are great (especially a certain little green fae that is now so very close to my heart). I like how the hunt for information on her mother's work was a combination of magical and mundane. It makes the search more relatable and realistic. And ooohhhh Alex. I am shipping this relationship so hard.
This book shocked me in more ways then one! I didn't think her mother would be that cruel and do all that. I thought her mother would be a good guy but nope complete bad guy! This was a wild as hell book. I wonder what's going to happen next! This was epic mind blowing an a whirlwind and so shocking with the turn of events!
I love endings that are beginnings and this book has a great example of this. One phase of Kat’s life gets completed and another phase begins. This has been such a great story with many layers to it. I love books like these that have a variety of complex relationships and evolving themes. I look forward to continuing the series.
Wow! The mystery of the tailsmen is revealed and is shocking! You won't be disappointed. Travel the would with Kat and friends as they work out what her mother was doing.
It was a good read and surprising. The book covers only a few days so not a lot of character development and is mostly active.
OK I've read books 1 and 2 of the series and so forth like a ballot they're quickly
This voice detects isn't working very well the author have created a very believable enjoyable universe to set her story I enjoyed the 1st 2 very well and looking forward to the rest
Wow, Kat can get into a lot of trouble, but with good friends and luck she gets through most of it. I love he humanness of the story and how it feels as if it could really happen. Kat’s life may have been turned upside down, but she definitely has friends, magic and great insight to help her get from point A to B.
Book 1 was fun with lots of magic and mystery. This one really gets into mystery and tons more magic. Kat is coming into her own as a half mage and lots of secrets and questions are answered here.
Second book in the series, was as good as the first. I would recommend it. So if you are looking for a new series to read and enjoy Urban fantasy, this might be an author to try. Don't you love finding a new author?
This series is out of the world in every sense of the word! I don't remember the last time I enjoyed a series so much other than every series that Linsey Hall has written. I can't say enough good things about both of these authors. They are fabulous!
I loved this story because it had so many twists and turns in the plot it kept riveted me to my tablet. I am so looking forward to the authors next adventure in Elusia.
The story was so much fun and interesting. It kept me turning page after page. The characters were so interesting you just couldn’t wait to learn more about them. I am so excited for the next book.
Really like the style of the book. Forward to reading the entire series. Kept my interest throughout the book. Characters are developed well for a short read.
This book was a good second half to the story. I was looking for something interesting to read and these two books hit the spot. They are very nicely put together and anyone can read them.
Book 2 continues along in the same vein...an unexplainable, irresistible attraction between the 2 main characters. And now Kat is tasked to prove her dead mother's innocence or be banished to some place called the Vortex. I don't think Elustria would be on my bucket list of places to visit! Predictable prose, but I need to see the series through...
2nd book in series. Have enjoyed the escape into another realm full of shifters, imps, mages and sorcerers. Even magical lands contain inhabitants with weaknesses we on Earth readily recognize.
I will admit I am still hooked on this story even when it is not my usually type of reading material. The story continues on the quest for answers regarding Kat's parentage and the unusual going on's in Elustria and Earth. Kat is learning little bits about her parents and family and what her mother was trying to accomplish. Not all of it was good no matter how you spin it.
The book is written in such away that you are engaged in Kat's quest to find answers but you are not bored while reading it. There was little predictability in this story which is great. The author keeps thing interesting between Kat, Alex, Nicole and Millhook who is a new addition to the cast. An imp with an attitude. Seems like everyone has their own idea of what Kat should be doing to find out about her magic, who her parents really are, why her mother left the talisman and what the Directorate wants. Lots of question not a lot of straight answers.
After reading the first book in this series, I had to read the second. I was not disappointed and could not put it down. I read it in one day. It answered most of my questions that I had from the first book.
Kat and Alex form an alliance with Millhook, an Imp, who is saying that he is doing it reluctantly but he makes you wonder if that is true. With his help, they are able to do things that they would not have been able to do without his help. You find yourself really liking Millhook and his quirky ways.
The story was very fast moving with a lot of action. It kept me so engrossed that I ended up finishing it the day I started it. I liked how the author tied things up instead of leaving a cliff hanger which many do in the second book of a series. Did I like the ending? Sorry but I am not going to give you a spoiler, you are going to have to read it and decide that question for yourself.
It picks up where book one left off. Only now, Kat finds herself being summoned by the Citadel in Elustria with no explanation. With only Alex, Millhook, her imp guide, to lead her, she's terrified. When she learns she could be held accountable for her mother's crimes if she doesn't provide evidence to the Citadel, it's a rush for time. Unfortunately, Kat runs across new enemies along her journey. It's action packed and reveals many details about Kat's birth, along with her parents. I highly recommend reading both books! I can't wait for Magic Betrayed! 5 stars!
I liked the fast pace of this book and Millhook was such a fun character! I'm really looking forward to the next book and learning more about Elustria and the magical world!
