It's hard to call this book obscurantist because there is set amid the rabble of seemingly dissonant intertexts a clear political purpose, a dissection of politics in modern Tunisia and a faint message of hope. I must thank the writer for the paratext (footnotes) which were a pleasure to read, a magnificent narrative that weaves anecdotes from history, mythology, religion and art. This book is meant as a tour-de-force, a challenge set by the writer's ego to contend with the great minds that stirred him into writing. It's a childish and necessarily pretentious kind of artistic drive but the result is hard to overlook, aesthetically at least. And then let's face it for the millionth time, Ben Brik is the best living writer the Tunisian literary smithy can brag about producing. The guy has a way with words, a gift for finding le mot juste which no one else may claim to possess. I've closely examined sounds, collocations, and syntax and found not a single mishap. All voices, ideological discourses and literary devices were carefully orchestrated. It's a pleasant mix even when meaning is as ghostly as Lear's spectre. Shakespeare's Hamlet gets an existentialist revamping in solid Al Misaadi-kind of Arabic and acquires international literary taste buds; It's music to the ears, literally.
