Confession is truly a divine commandment. This is why the person who has sinned feels his heart burdened and does not find relief unless he confesses his sin. God came to the earth in order to invite all them who have sinned to repent, and, on account of His infinite love for man, He left the sacrament of confession within His Church, so that they who have sinned may receive forgiveness, find peace, and acquire spiritual health. The Holy Scriptures, both the Old and New Testaments, Church history, and the writings of Christian authors throughout the centuries attest to this truth, and confirm that confession is indeed a God-given, life-saving medicine for man.
Fasting in the way the Church commands requires obedience, which requires humility. How much of this humility do I have, is what I ask myself.
St Nectarios discusses the meaning of true repentance. He also explains the Biblical basis of confession before a spiritual father, and how that father has the ability to establish penances for sins, which can include withholding communion.
A truly wonderful book, and I am encouraged to deepen my repentance (which is shallow far too often), and I hope other readers will do the same.
Such great wisdom from St. Nektarios. He ensure his readers thoroughly understand the importance of repentance and confession. Although it is a short book, it is full of wisdom. A must read for the Orthodox Christian.
Wonderful commentary by Saint Nektarios, retelling accounts from previous church fathers and providing great insights into the transformed heart of a committed Christian.
