Single mama v. scummy ex's best friend. Who adores her daughter too. Pajama parties. Amazing families. And the feels. All the feels. #LovelyRomance #BringOnTheSwoon
Olivia Miles' books always give my heart a little squeeze. Beautiful and touching. Hope Springs on Main Street was the perfect read for a Fall afternoon and a lovely second chance romance as childhood friends finally realize they may have been meant for more.
The quick of it is that Jane's ex-husband is a complete fucking asshole and Jane is trying to move on and keep it together now that she's a single mom. And her life has just gotten even more complicated when the scummy ex's best friend comes back to town to deal with his own demons and despite calling it quits on the male population sparks start to fly...
Jane and Henry were wonderful. They're good people and both a bit gun shy after suffering through divorces. Jane's was very recent and dealing with her ex is a daily battle. I seriously wanted to just scoop her up and give her a big ol' hug. And beat the hell out of the ex. He made me...have #rageface. Jane though. Gah! a single mama and fighting hard to give her little girl a good life and stability in the face of so much change. And Henry. Oh heavens. Henry was gorgeous and kind and exactly what Jane and her little girl needed in their life. A man who was good down to his toes despite the demons from his childhood he was still fighting.
There's not much in the way of heat other than a little kissing and heavy petting. Everything else is behind closed doors. But the slowly growing connection between them was lovely and sweet and had me sighing a number of times.
I loved how much they cared for their families and friends. That connection and love was heartwarming and made the story even more special. And how Henry was with her little girl. It all just got me right....there. Ya know?
It's not all fluffy though. There are some heard things both Jane and Henry deal with. The devastation of a marriage ending, with friends caught in the middle of the split, with old gossip and painful past memories and stigmas. It was heartwrenching watching them deal with their demons but wonderful seeing their inner strengths (even when they couldn't see them).
All in all, Hope Springs on Main Street gave me all the feels. Miles has a beautiful way about her writing and of showing hope, strength and love triumphing over all. She's one not to miss!
~~~~~~~~~ 10/9 I'm really loving this heroine. I want to scoop her up and just give her a big ol' hug.
10/1 This one just screams Fall! I love it. Enjoyed book one. Can't believe I missed book two! Eeps. Can't wait to dive in.
This is a nice book to curl up with on an overcast Sunday afternoon, because it will certainly chase away the gloom and leave you with a smile on your face. I thought the author did an excellent job of depicting the thorny aftermath of divorce. Extended family, friends, and of course children, all get caught in the middle causing problematic and tricky situations for all concerned. Henry's family troubles and his feelings of lost hope is also a very compelling part of the story and explained his need to get away, to travel and see the world. In many ways this is a second chance at love story since Henry has been carrying a torch for Jane for a long time. I loved watching him come around, loved how he saved the day for Jane and came through for her in a really big way, which may be a grand gesture to beat all grand gestures, and how this helped him to find his own way and renewed his faith in Briar's Creek, his family, and in true love. Overall, this is a sweet, heartwarming, feel good story, recommended to lovers of contemporary romance, Chick-lit, and Women's fiction.
"Hope Springs on Main Street" is a wonderful story of two people finding each other after living other lives for awhile. I'll be looking for more "Briar Creek" novels from this author. The characters are well developed and believable. I could picture the town and it's people while reading. It reads like a Hallmark Movie.
Jane's ex-husband, who was cheating on her, is getting remarried to his pregnant mistress. Unfortunately, Jane learns all of this from their 6 year-old daughter, Sophie. Meanwhile, Henry is back in town to fix-up his childhood home to sell and also to assure that his sister, Ivy finally gets her diabetes under control. It takes time for Jane and Henry to realize what some already knew-they were always meant for each other.
My Review: Aw, this was a good story. Jane's life is kind of in shambles. In the last year, she's gotten divorced from her cheating ex. While he's moved on with his mistress, Jane is struggling not to live in pjs whenever at home with her 5 yo daughter. Her one joy is her dance classes, but registration is down which means her very meager income is down. But it's the holidays and she's trying to maintain a happy face while helping one of her sisters navigate planning her wedding. Her father also died this year, so there's some emotional turmoil on that front for the whole family.
Henry doesn't understand close families or why he's back in this small town that was the site of every emotional black point in his life. But his twin sister is in ill health and he has to help her. He's just trying not to sink into the black hole that is this gossiping, nosy small town. They never managed to help him or his sister growing up with their irrational, drunk mother. He doesn't want them in his business now. He HATES that he has to be back here now. The one bright point to this visit is getting to see Jane, his teenage crush.
I do like this series. Regardless of Henry's black feelings for this small town, I love this little town. I also loved that he ended up writing a travel article about the town which enabled him to see it with more objective eyes, too. There is a lot of emotional upheaval in this book. My heart hurt for what Jane is going through with her jerk of an ex...I HATE how much he continues to hurt her. But my heart also broke for Henry and Ivy and the things they went through growing up. Those reminiscent scenes were so painful and Henry's very real physical reaction to thinking of them even after so many years shows just how truly awful they were. The author did an incredible job with his mental anguish.
I love all the businesses the author has established through this series. I can see them all so clearly in my mind and want to visit them...along with the festivals and the orchard. Really, Olivia Miles is an excellent author and this book was a great addition to the series. I love this little town of Briar Creek. I'd move there in a heartbeat if I could and the thought of even visiting throughout the holidays sounds like heaven. Luckily, I have the book which is *almost* as good as a real visit (you know, if it was a real town, not a fictional one.)
I definitely recommend this book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
When I started this book I couldn't remember who the characters were in the previous book but as I continued to get sucked into the story it all came rushing back to me. Thank god because I hate when I can't remember people or how they got together.
In this book Henry is back home to help his sister fix up and sell there mothers house and give ivy much needed rest. Henry hasn't been back in 6 years since Jane married his best friend.
Now Jane is divorced because her husband cheated on her and is marrying and having his mistresses baby. She wants to get back into dating but the one man she wants isn't going to stick around.
I really liked how Jane and Henry's relationship wasn't planned but it moved at a believable pace. We know they were friends but they didn't keep in touch and now they are getting to know each other again. I also enjoyed how Henry liked her back then and was always there for her more so then her own boyfriend was. These two definitely should have been together since the beginning.
I was expecting Janes ex-husband to be a little more upset over her growing relationship with Henry but that never happened. I adored how Henry was with Janes daughter and how well he took to being in her life. The tooth fairy part was just cute!
I do like this series and I am really looking forward to more books from Miles. She has a talent for making her characters and the town seem so real.
If you love reading books about people getting a second chance at love after there heart has been broken then I totally recommend this book.
I liked Jane and Henry well enough. They're complete opposites, but it seems to work. Sadly, their chemistry didn't really come through on the page for me. The character I really became interested in was Ivy. I enjoyed the dynamic between Ivy and Henry and hope she'll get her own book.
There were lengthy passages that I skimmed over and a lot of divorce drama. I was hoping for something a bit fluffier. Overall, it was a quick read and I'm intrigued to see what the next in the series will be.
Review:
I actually want to give this book a 4.5 rating as it was just that good of a (love) story ☺. But it is really about so much more than just the love story between Jane and Henry. The reader is immersed in the lives of the many members of the Briar Creek community in so much more depth than previous books in this series. At least, that is my impression. I found the many sub stories very well written. They integrated well and did not detract from the main story. All seemed to add to the depth to this story. And of course, provide a good backdrop for future stories of other town residents.
Jane is a single mother getting by after her “rat-bugger” of a husband (Adam) cheats on her and then divorces her. She was married at 18 and stayed home to look after their child. So life goes on after the divorce, with certainly some uncomfortable moments. It seems like everything is happening to Jane all at once – her ex is marrying his mistress and they are having a baby, her hours of work at the dance studio have been cut down, her sister is getting married AND Henry is back in town to help his sister, Ivy, fix up and sell their family home now that their mother has passed on. To make things interesting, Henry has always had a thing for Jane. In high school they were good friends, with Henry being the best mate of Adam so that he never crossed the line….but he sure wanted to.
As Jane navigates her single life, she encounters even greater hurdles. Alex is planning on moving to Denver after his wedding…and he has started custody proceedings to get full time custody of their daughter. This has Jane in a big state of panic, especially since her work hours have been cut. She has huge self-doubt about her ability to provide for Sophie. And of course does not want to burden her family with all of this as they prepare for her sister Grace’s wedding. Her strength of character is very admirable.
Henry has some serious baggage, which has led to the choices he has made so that he has a nomadic existence. He is home after many years to settle the estate of his late mother; working with his sister Ivy. The old family home needs to be cleaned out and renovated to prepare for a sale. I found his struggles to overcome his negative ambivalence about Briar Creek intriguing and that portion of the story line certainly had some depth.
I found the love story between Jane and Henry slow to develop, which I found realistic of a wary single mother and guy who has had bad luck as well in the love and marriage department. I also found this good because any single mother knows that you must take it slow and steady, otherwise the kid(s) get vested too early! I giggled at some of the family type outings they had and it brought the simple joys of life out, even when life was tough. There also was certainly some heavy duty chemistry between the two…making the story `hot` at times ☺
Another fine installment about the residents of Briar Creek! I can hardly wait to read book #4, Love Blooms on Main Street.
*OBS would like to thank the publisher for supplying a free copy of this title in exchange for an honest review*
I have not read the first two books in the Briar Creek series, but this did not leave me wondering.
I am a sucker for a friends-to-lovers romance, and Hope Springs on Main Street was a great way to spend a Spring afternoon.
Sometimes you can't see right what is under your nose - and that is how things are with Jane.
Recently divorced. Single mum to a beautiful little girl. Fodder for the small town gossip mill.
There were so may times I just wanted to hug her so hard!
At the same time I wanted to throat punch her ex hubby Adam. There is only one way to describe him.
Henry, Adam's best friend is back in town, and things are about to get interesting! I would have thought Adam would have been more upset with Henry and his burgeoning friendship with Jane. But then again, he wasn't that worried about Jane when he was with her, so I guess that I shouldn't have been too surprised.
I adored Jane's relationship with her sisters, Grace and Anna.
But Henry.... sigh. The more we learn about him, the more we learn about his feelings for Jane. You can't help but love the guy. Sure, I wanted to slap him around the ears for procrastinating about Jane, but still loved him.
There was something that was done that I would have liked to have known more about, as it did play a pretty big part in the direction of the story.
But that could just be me!
This is my first Olivia Miles books, but I will definitely be making time to go back and read the first two Briar Creek stories.
I love second chance romances and I was excited to begin Hope Springs on Main Street.
Jane Madison is divorced. Her ex-husband cheated on her and now she is trying to pick up the pieces of her life and she spends her free time with her young daughter. She loves dancing and she is the local dance teacher. She also helps her sisters' businesses. Both of her sisters are in a loving relationship and one of them is planning her wedding. Jane can't help but feel sad she doesn't have anyone who loves her like that.
Henry Birch is back in Briar Creek to clear his mother's affairs after she dies. She was a terrible mother to him and his sister, Ivy. They both suffered through her moods and addictions. The town only brings him bad memories except for the ones he has of Jane. Jane was the one who got away. He cared for her but he let his best friend marry her instead. Since then, he hasn't been lucky in the romance department. He's divorced and lonely. Hanging out with Jane again is making him believe that there might be a chance for them.
This is my first book by Olivia Miles. I found myself feeling sad for both characters. They had painful pasts. At least Jane has a great support system from all of her family. On the other hand, her ex-husband was a total douche. He seemed to enjoy hurting her over and over. When Jane and Henry meet again, I was rooting for them to help each other heal their emotional wounds. Henry felt he wasn't entitled to happiness. I was happy with the progression of their love story and outcome.
Cliffhanger: No
4/5 Fangs
Jane Madison never expected to find herself starting over in life at her age, but when her husband divorces her and leaves her for another woman, she has no other choice. She is left to pick up the pieces of her life and try to provide some semblance of a normal life for her young daughter, which proves to be a lot harder than she expected. Especially when she finds out her husband is planning to marry and have a child with the woman he cast her aside for. She submerses herself into her work, and helping her sister plan her wedding in hope of easing the pain of her loss, but the longing to find that kind of love again with someone, just won't go away. She knows she deserves to be happy, and wants to find love again, but isn't really ready to put her heart at risk again. That is until she finds out that Henry Birch has returned to town...
Henry Birch has returned home to take care of his mother's personal affairs after she passes, and close a chapter on his life that he's more than ready to forget. His past in this little town still haunts him, with the exception of his memories of his best friends girl Jane. He is pleasantly surprised to discover that Jane is single again, and in search of a happily ever after for her and her daughter. He has never gotten over his friends wife or her decision to marry someone so totally wrong for her. But now that she is single, he is beginning to think that making this trip could be the best thing that has ever happened to him...
This was my first visit to the Briar Creek series, and I have to say that I really enjoyed it, so much so, I'm planning a return visit very soon. I loved reading Henry and Jane's story, it felt very real, honest and easy to identify with. I love reading small town romances and this one definitely hit the mark, it warmed my heart and left me smiling! Definitely small town romance at it's best!!
Hope Springs on Main Street is the third in Olivia Miles Briar Creek series. Though the first two books we watch the youngest Madison sister Jane as she weathered the trials and tribulations of getting divorced young and starting over. This novel brings her a HEA of her own, though it is hard fought. Henry Birch, Jane’s ex-husband’s best friend, left town the night of her wedding. Now six years later he’s back in town and trying to bury old ghosts. Neither is really looking for the other, but as with many things, sometimes you get what you need, not what you are looking for. I really enjoyed this installment in this series. I hope that Miles has more books planned as visits to Briar Creek are always welcome.
I am a strong believer in strength of character. No individual knows how they will handle a situation until they have to face it head on. Jane is my hero. She dealt with a major JA for years and then was tossed aside like trash. This is a woman that had the rug pulled from under her yet she handled it with grace and strength. She learned from her past mistakes and with the help of an old friend may find a new chance at love. Hope Springs on Main Street is a story that is not always sunny but just like Jane leaves you feeling stronger for reading it. This is my first read by Olivia Miles and I am so grateful to have discovered her work. Received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Jane Madison lebt gerade in Scheidung von ihrem Noch-Ehemann und Vater ihrer kleinen Tochter. Als sie herausfindet, dass ihr Noch-Ehemann erneut Vater und seine Geliebte heiraten wird, ist es vorbei mit Janes Seelenfrieden. Zutiefst verletzt von dem Verrat, verkriecht sich Jane bei ihrer Familie. Aber auch bei ihrer Familie, findet Jane keine Ruhe. Denn beide Schwestern sind mittlerweile glücklich vergeben und Jane ist sich beinahe sicher, dass sie nie wieder einen Mann finden wird.
Aber alles ändert sich, als Henry Birch in Briar Creek auftaucht. Henry ist ein früherer, guter Freund von Jane und er ist zunächst nur auf der Durchreise in Vermont. Doch seine Schwester ist auf Henry angewiesen und so bleibt er länger in der Kleinstadt. Henry ist ziemlich angetan von Jane, und auch Jane ist von Henry schwer begeistert. Beide werden in den nächsten Wochen immer unzertrennlicher und gute Freunde, doch es gibt einen Hacken! Henry ist der beste Freund von Janes Ex und während des Sorgerechtsstreits um Janes Tochter, gerät Henry plötzlich zwischen die Fronten....
Dies ist nun schon der dritte Teil der Briar Creek-Reihe und mindestens genauso gut, wie Band eins. Band zwei war ja zuletzt eine kleine Enttäuschung für mich, umso mehr gefreut hat's mich, als sie dann für mich herausstellte, dass der dritte Teil hier, so gut wie "Winter in Briar Creek" ist.
Zwar ist die Geschichte doch recht unspektakulär, aber sie beinhaltet mit Jane und Henry zwei sehr tolle Protagonisten. Die Liebesgeschichte ist zwar ziemlich vorhersehbar, bietet auch nicht wirklich etwas Neues, aber sie unterhält für wenige Stunden richtig gut.
Henry und Janes Liebe war überhaupt nicht geplant. Beide haben nicht aktiv nach einem neuen Partner gesucht, aber sie haben sich plötzlich, nach vielen Jahren, wiedergetroffen und Henry, der schon früh heimlich in Jane verliebt war, war auch jetzt sofort wieder hin und weg von ihr. Jane versucht noch die Gefühle, die Henry in ihr weckt, zu leugnen, doch auch sie kommt gegen seinen Charme nicht an. Die beiden passen ganz hervorragend zusammen und Henry ist ganz klar ein sehr viel besserer Mann, als Janes Ex! Er war Jane früher, vor vielen Jahren, schon so ein guter Freund und auch jetzt, wo Jane einen Freund so dringend braucht, hat sie in Henry genau den passenden Mann an ihrer Seite. Ich finde, beide hätten schon viel früher ein Paar sein sollen. Irgendwie sind die zwei nämlich füreinander bestimmt!
Wenn ihr Geschichten mögt, wo Menschen eine zweite Chance bekommen, nachdem ihnen einmal das Herz gebrochen wurde, dann solltet ihr wirklich zu diesem Roman bzw. gleich zur ganzen Reihe greifen. 4 von 5 Sternchen!
Jane is trying to live her life in her relatively (*snort* it always amuses me when people call 10,000 a "small" town and talk about knowing everyone and there being no stop lights. Yeah, right. I live in a town with a population of 10,000, and everyone doesn't know everyone else. There are also many stop lights. Not stop signs, although there are plenty of those, too. Stop lights. Less than 1000 is a small town. I should know. I've lived in one of those, too. *steps off soapbox*) small town. Side note: I'm not sure how small the town is. I got the impression that it was between 5000 and 10,000. Her ex-husband cheated on her, and is now marrying the woman he cheated with. Jane worries about her daughter and being able to provide for her, but doesn't want to concern her family, who is in the midst of planning one of her sister's wedding. Henry rolls into town. He hasn't really been back since he left after Jane's wedding. He doesn't plan on staying long, just enough to get the house that he grew up in ready for sale. Henry doesn't have fond memories of his hometown. The only thing that made it bearable was his best friend Adam, who happens to be Jane's ex-husband, and Jane. Henry always liked Jane, and thought that she was settling for his best friend. As Henry gets to know Jane as an adult, and as a mother, and to see his town through eyes that aren't quite as blinded by his childhood, he starts to realize that there might be something good in the town, including Jane.
Meh. I'm waffling between a 2.5 and 3 star rating, but I'm annoyed enough at the secretive heroine and the hero who refuses to see anything but the past to leave it at 2.5 stars. I liked the relationship that Henry develops with Jane's daughter, and (mostly) liked the relationship development between Henry and Jane. There wasn't any big miscommunication, but there was a lot of whinging and poor-poor-pitiful me martyrdom going on. "Oh, I'm not good enough." "Oh, they'll never understand. I don't want to worry them."
In " Herbstzauber in Briar Creek " hat Singlemom Jane noch immer an dem Ende ihrer Ehe zu knabbern als sie erfährt, dass ihr Exmann Adam erneut heiraten will und eine neue Familie gründet. Und wäre nicht ihre kleine Tochter Sophia fiele Jane in ein tiefes Loch. Doch plötzlich ist ihre zerbrochene Ehe das kleinste ihrer Probleme und Jane bekommt ausgerechnet von Henry, dem besten Freund ihres Ex, Hilfe angeboten. Auch war es Henry, der damals Jane den Schritt vor dem Traualtar ausreden wollte, doch Liebe macht bekanntlich blind und Jane sah nicht, dass ihre Ehe keine Zukunft haben würde. Das aber ausgerechnet Henry nun für Herzklopfen bei Jane sorgt, macht das ganze nicht leichter. Denn Henry zeigt zu deutlich, dass er nicht vorhat nach Briar Creek zurückzukehren und zudem bald seine Heimatstadt wieder hinter sich lässt. Kann es für Jane und Henry evtl doch eine Chance auf eine gemeinsame Zukunft geben, oder steht nicht nur Adam den beiden im Weg? Die Story lässt sich leicht und flüssig lesen, bleibt dabei abwechslungsreich sowie spannungsgeladen. Man darf mit Jane und Henry mitfiebern und die verschiedesten Emotionen erleben. Es gibt einiges zum schmunzeln bis herzhaft zu lachen, so manche mitfühlende, tragische wie auch brisante Momente und das ein oder andere Tränchen zu vergießen. Da ich wissen wollte, ob es für beide ein Happy End gab, konnte ich das Buch kaum noch aus der Hand legen. Das Buch bekommt von mir eine Lese / Kaufempfehlung und 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Sterne.
Jane ist aus der Fassung gebracht, als sie ihren Mann beim Fremdgehen erwischt und er sie und seine Tochter wegen seiner neuen Freundin verlässt. Henry hasst die kleine Stadt Briar Creek, in der er aufgewachsen ist, aber er kommt nach Hause, um seiner Zwillingsschwester zu helfen. Er war schon immer in Jane verknallt, aber er ist auch der beste Freund ihres Ex-Mannes, was die Sache noch komplizierter macht. Dies ist eine gut geschriebene und befriedigende Liebesgeschichte. Die Charaktere und Situationen sind glaubwürdig und ich habe es genossen, wie die Geschichte weiterging und schließlich gelöst wurde. Ich habe keine anderen Bücher dieses Autors gelesen, aber dies war eine schöne eigenständige Geschichte, ohne dass man die Hintergrundgeschichte der Nebencharaktere kennen musste.
Nach den zweiten hab ich gleich den dritten gelesen, somit sind alle drei Madison-Mädchen glücklich und verliebt. Tatsächlich ist es mir hier auch wieder schwer gefallen in die Geschichte zu finden, ich weiß nicht, warum das bei dieser Reihe so ist. Vielleicht brauch ich einfach Zeit um mich an den Schreibstil zu gewöhnen. Trotzdem find ich die Geschichten entspannend und gut für zwischendurch. Briar Creek ist eine Kleinstadt in der viel geredet wird, aber in der auch viele zusammenhalten und in schweren Zeiten helfen. Ich mochte Henry und Jane und ich finde Sophie echt süß. 4 Sterne
Rather gentle in tone, lots of looking backward for the main characters. I do like how it has taken a couple books for the couple in the first book finally got married. Looks like I may read the 4th book sometime when I need a change of pace.
I won a paperback copy of this book during a Goodreads giveaway. I am under no obligation to leave a review or rating and do so voluntarily. So that others may also enjoy this book, I am paying it forward by donating it to my local library.
Good read. Another tormented couple that gets over it. I do like the story though. Just hate seeing everyone in pain thinking there's no way around it. I like the characters and I am looking forward to reading the next book.
