Lately, I find myself being more and more drawn to middle grade books and I have this need to unearth all the jewels I can find. This book was one that I thought I would love. I was drawn in by the premise and was let down. What this book lacks is an execution of its premise that would blow the socks off of its readers. The premise is not the least bit lacking but the way things are built around it, those could definitely use a touch up so as to make this book the amazing thing it promises to be.
This problem is added to by the fact that this book reads like it’s aimed towards a younger audience. Some of the most obvious things to someone my age don’t seem to be obvious to Archie but I don’t know if it’s because kids in that age group are slower to make connections or if it’s just the author downsizing the book because kids are supposedly not so smart.
To me it felt like the latter. Which I don’t like. A book, no matter what age group it is aimed towards, should never feel like it’s undermining the reader’s intelligence. That’s the number one reason this book didn’t work for me. There were so many, ‘THIS IS SO OBVIOUS’ moments that just made me laugh at their obviousness and frustrated me when the characters couldn’t figure out what was going on.
Archie especially had a tendency to jump to conclusions. If this tendency were presented as a character fault instead of just something he did, I might have had a better time adjusting to it but he never seemed to realized that he had a tendency to jump to conclusions without thinking. He didn’t, in this case, learn from previous mistakes. So there wasn’t much development in his character. He was the same ‘special’ Archie he was at the beginning of the book but now he had cousins and family he was willing to be brave for.
That said, Archie was a good character. I admired his bravery, especially when he realized that being brave did not mean being fearless but rather being able to make decisions in spite of the fear. He is young and he seems to have all this responsibility thrown on him on top of the fact that he has just become aware of a whole other world. He takes this all in stride and attempts to adapt to the best of his ability. Sometimes the ease with which he adapts may seem a little far fetched but still, I cannot help but admire Archie. When he finds out that there have been secrets kept from him, he doesn’t go around demanding answers but instead seeks them himself. And he realizes when he is out of his depth and ASKS FOR HELP.
What also makes this book fun to read are the secondary characters. Old Zeb’s quirkiness never failed to put a smile to my face and I just adored how his cousins were so accepting of Archie. The relationship between the three was really fun to read about.
The best part of this book lies in the world building. I mean this is a book about people who take care of books. HOW COOL IS THAT? Throw in interesting concepts like the Great Library of Alexandria (!!!), magical books, and fantastical creatures and you have a book that could be a winner. In fact, this book would have been a winner for me if it weren’t so childish at times.
The plot also didn’t help matters. With all this awesomeness that could have been further developed, what happened instead was that everything happened in a rush. I tend to like it when my plots are well developed even if slow placed. The plot it in this book kind of just wooshed by you and you just stood there watching it fly past you wondering how you even got to this place. It's not that I didn't enjoy it, it's just that had it been slower, I would have been a much happier reader.
The thing about this book is that it would be a perfect read if you're not looking for something particularly detailed and fancy. Don't be fooled into thinking that this book is going to draw you into one of the best adventures of your life, it won't, but it'll keep you occupied for a while and you'll close the book with a smile on your face.

Einfach nur zauberhaft! Ich habe mich in dieses Buch verliebt, als ich nur das Cover gesehen habe, denn bereits das ist einfach nur wunderschön. Dann habe ich "Archie Greene und die Bibliothek der Magie" gelesen und was soll ich sagen: Die Geschichte ist genauso zauberhaft wie das Cover. Hach! :-)
Es ist zwar ein sogenanntes Kinderbuch für Fantasyfans ab 11 Jahren - ähm, zum Glück gibt es ja kein maximales Alter -, aber ich finde, die Liebe zu guter Fantasy, Magie und tollen Büchern ist eh alterslos. Man kann den Roman von D.D. Everest auch als Erwachsene Leser einfach nur verschlingen und begeistert sein. Der Autor hat sich eine tolle Welt ausgedacht, in der Bücher magisch sind und in dem Museum für Buchkunde erfasst und bewahrt werden. Dort können sie übrigens auch fliegen (siehe Cover). Der junge Held Archie wird an seinem 12. Geburtstag - ja, man denkt kurz an Harry Potter, ich geb's zu - in diese magische Welt eingeführt, als er nämlich ein solches magisches Buch mit dem Auftrag erhält, es nach Oxford zu diesem Museum zu bringen. In Oxford angekommen wird er als Lehrling des Buchbinders Zeb an der zugehörigen Buchhandlung des Museums angenommen und lernt seine Verwandten kennen, die ebenfalls Buchfinder und Buchbewahrer im Dienst des Museums sind. Archies neuen Aufgaben lassen ihm aber immer noch genug Zeit, um auf eigene Faust etwas herumzuschnüffeln, als Gierer in der Stadt auftauchen und ein mächtiges magisches Buch suchen. Ist es vielleicht das Buch, das Archie zum Museum gebracht hat? Und falls ja, was genau ist das Geheimnis dieses Buches?
Ich will hier nicht zu viel verraten, daher empfehle ich diesen Roman jedem, der die "Tintenwelt"-Trilgie von Cornelia Funke und zauberhafte Kinderbücher liebt. Für mich ist "Archie Greene und die Bibliothe der magischen Bücher" auf jeden Fall jetzt schon eins der besten Bücher 2015.

Archie ist ein aufgeweckter 12-jähriger Junge und das trotzdem er ohne seine Eltern und seine Schwester aufwachsen musste. Diese sind bei einem Schiffsunglück ums Leben gekommen als Archie noch klein war. So wuchs er bei seiner Großmutter auf, die er liebevoll Gran nennt. Sein Leben war bisher eher langweilig und öde, passierte in diesem südenglischen Dorf so gar nichts und seine Gran ist auch eher von der ruhigen Sorte.
Eines Tages steht plötzlich ein komischer Kauz mit einem uralten Päckchen vor der Tür. Dieses kann wohl nur für ihn sein, hat er doch heute Geburtstag. In diesem Paket ist ein ebenso uraltes Buch mit dem Archie nichts anzufangen weiß, kann er doch nicht einmal diese komische Schrift lesen. Was folgt ist ein Kuddelmuddel, ausgelöst durch eine vergessene Nachricht zu dem Päckchen, was zu einer Reise nach Oxford in einen kleinen mysteriösen Buchladen führt und das Kennenlernen seiner äußerst schrägen aber witzigen Verwandten mit sich bringt. Ehe er es sich versieht, ist er in diesem Buchladen als Buchbinde-Lehrling angestellt.
Archie tritt so in die Welt der Bücher und auch der Magie ein, erfährt nach und nach ein unglaubliches Familiengeheimnis und dann fangen auch noch die Bücher zu sprechen an. Als ob das nicht alles schon seltsam genug wäre, machen ihn die Bücher auf unheimliche Vorgänge aufmerksam. Nun muss Archie über sich hinaus wachsen und die Bücher vor einem Unheil bewahren, denn genau für das scheint Archie bestimmt zu sein.
"Plötzlich hörte Archie über sich etwas flattern, bevor es mit einem lauten Schlag auf einem Tisch neben ihm landete.
Entsetzt stellte Archie fest, dass es kein Vogel war - sondern ein Buch!
Nachdem es sich kurz ausgeruht hatte, öffnete es die Klappendeckel wie Flügel und schwang sich auf einen Schrank,
um sich in einem der Regale niederzulassen."

Was gibt es Schöneres als in eine Welt voller Bücher und Magie abzutauchen. In diesem magischen Buch für Kinder ab 11 Jahren, geht es diesbezüglich wirklich hoch her. Man lernt mit Archie das von Magie umwobene Oxford kennen, wo sich in jeder Gasse, in jedem kleinen alten Geschäft etwas Magisches verbergen kann. Hier konnte mich vor allem das Museum für Magiekunde begeistern, welches durch Quills Schokoladenhaus betreten wird.
Man ist umgeben von dicken, antiquarischen Magiebüchern und kann diesen Geruch von alten Büchern und muffigen Pergament regelrecht riechen. Begegnungen mit skurrilen Figuren und auch Büchern, sind an der Tagesordnung. Sei es der Alte Zeb, der Lehrmeister Archies, der die Größe eines Gnoms hat und irgendwie an einen Gecko erinnert. Dann gibt es noch fliegende und sprechende Bücher oder Ritter die samt Pferd und Rüstung aus Büchern springen. Seine Tante Loretta, die außergewöhnliche Rezepte liebt, wie z.B. Torte mit Sardinenfüllung und blauen Zuckerguss und noch viele mehr.
Hier ist also wirklich für magische Unterhaltung gesorgt und es wird niemals langweilig.
"Außerdem gab es Bilder von Vampiren, Werwölfen und einem Geschöpf, das man Gärwolf nannte -
eine wolfsähnliche Kreatur, in deren Eingeweiden so grässliche Gase gärten,
dass sie Feuer speien konnte wie ein Drache."

Der Schreibstil ist flüssig und klar. Während einem der Plot packt, einem die ausgefeilten und gut gezeichneten Charaktere mit ins Buch reißen und die Wendungen einem ein überraschtes "Oh" entschlüpfen lassen, jagt man regelrecht durch das Buch, um die anderen Bücher zu retten.
Dieses Buch spricht außerdem sowohl Jungs, als auch Mädchen an. Archie muss hier seinen Weg finden und der ist alles andere als ein Strandspaziergang. Doch mit Bramble, seiner Cousine, wurde eine ebenso starke und tolle Mädchenfigur erschaffen. Sie ist ein mutiges 14-jähriges Mädchen und ist mit Magie aufgewachsen. Bramble ist klug, hat es aber auch faustdick hinter den Ohren. Sie nimmt sich Archie an und führt ihn in diese mysteriöse Welt voller Zauber und Bücher ein. Kurz gesagt - sie hat den vollen Durchblick.
Und so begibt man sich als Leser mit auf die Reise durch diese magische Bücherwelt.
Fazit:
Es ist ein wundervoller und spannender Auftakt einer Kinderbuch-Reihe voller Bücher, Magie und skurriler Figuren. Hier geht es spannend, witzig und magisch zu und ich habe es geliebt in diese Welt abzutauchen. Einziger Nachteil - man bekommt verdammt oft Lust auf Heiße Schokolade ;-)
Diese Reihe gefällt mir so gut, sodass ich sofort zum 2. Teil der Archie-Reihe greife, da ich unbedingt wissen muss wie es mit Archie und seinen Freunden weitergeht.

Dieses Buch hat mich aus einer tiefen Leseflaute geholt. Es hat genau die richtige Mischung aus Büchermagie und Staunen, die einen sofort zwischen die Seiten zieht. Dazu die interessante, in sich schlüssige Welt und die teils recht verschrobenen Charaktere. Einfach zauberhaft! This book is a fun read. I've been looking for some great MG reads and this caught my attention. Sadly, it didn't blow my mind like Harry Potter or Percy Jackson but I think it's more because of my age and maturity as a reader. I did enjoy the reading the book, but it felt too rushed.
The world-building was good. I think any middle-graders would enjoy this one, especially book lovers. This book is about book caretakers! How amazing is that?
Archie was an amazing character. I admire his bravery, intelligence and sense of adventure. The secondary characters had pretty good dynamics as well. I loved the wittiness of Old Zeb and Archie's cousins always make me smile!
If only the book didn't feel too rushed, I think I would have loved it more. "Archie Greene ja taikurin salaisuus" (Art House, 2015) osoittautui hirmuiseksi pettymykseksi. Kai se on niin, että kohderyhmä ei tunnista kliseetä kliseeksi, mutta tämmöinen vanhempi jarru lähinnä tympääntyy yrityksestä kirjoittaa Harry Potter uudestaan. Ei jatkoon.

Zo heel af en toe vind je bij de Action nog wel eens boeken waar je nog nooit van gehoord had, die je nooit in de boekhandel zou kopen, maar die je voor 1,88 toch wel eens wil uitproberen. En dit boek was er daar een van. Ik lees normaal niet meer zoveel middle grades, maar dit verhaal klonk leuk en dus heb ik het boek toch maar meegenomen.
Dus, toen ik vanochtend om kwart over 5 wakker werd en nog wel een paar uur had voor de wekker ging, heb ik het boek uit de kast gepakt en het in één ruk lekker uitgelezen. En dat is alvast een goed teken. Ik merkte dat ik echt begon te hopen dat ik het verhaal nog uit kon lezen voor ik vandaag moest vertrekken, omdat het goed in elkaar zat en vooral een hele fijne spanningsboog had.
Het boek bestaat eigenlijk uit verschillende stappen. Allereerst krijgt Archie het vreemde boek, waardoor hij op reis moet. Daarna komt hij terecht in een wereld vol magie, die we samen met hem ontdekken. Daarna begint hij te ontdekken dat hij bepaalde gaves heeft en ten slotte volgt er een mysterie dat opgelost moet worden.
Deze opbouw zorgde ervoor dat je langzaamaan de wereld en het verhaal ingezogen werd. Het was lekker overzichtelijk en zat vol met leuke scenes en ook wel wat spanning. Het is dat mijn neefje alleen houdt van boeken met plaatjes, anders had ik hem deze zeker aangeraden. De wereld zit leuk in elkaar, het verhaal ook en Archie is best een leuk joch, net als de andere karakters in het boek.
Uiteraard blijft het een middle grade, dus ik verwachtte niet al te veel emotionele diepgang of een heel vernuftig plot. Maar als middle grade is het gewoon een superleuk boek dat menig kind toch wel naar het randje van de stoel zal doen schuiven!

Ihan must kaikille, jotka rakastavat kirjoja ja seikkailuja kirjapinojen keskellä. Kuvituksesta vielä lisäpisteitä! Tosin kannen kuva on aivan liian pirtsakka ja sen perusteella olisikin jäänyt hyvä kirja lukematta.

La lecture est un pur enchantement. Elle vous entraîne, en 370 pages, dans un tourbillon de découvertes et de révélations stupéfiantes. Cette sensation grisante m'a d'ailleurs rappelé celle éprouvée à la lecture des Harry Potter ! Avis aux amateurs.

Hahhaa, minä todella tykkäsin tästä! :D Enpä olisi ikinä arvannut! Toki tässä oli paljon samoja elementtejä kuin Harry Pottereissa, ja kun näitä vertasi mielessään niin tuli vaan surulliseksi, koska Harry Potter on niin paljon parempi...
Mutta ei se mitään! Tämä nimittäin sopii mainiosti luettavaksi ENNEN Pottereita! :) Kieli on helpompaa, teksti on suurempaa, jännitystä riittää ja hienoja kuviakin on, joten mikäs siinä lukiessa? Khöm, mutta ihan vakavasti puhuen, minä olin todella iloisesti yllättynyt tästä kirjasta. Alku oli aika tökerö (mm. slapstick-komiikkaa), mutta sieltä se kirjan henki vaan tuli esiin ja sieppasi mukaansa. Todiste: luin tämän illassa, lähes yhdellä istumalla.
Ja siihenhän ei toki vaikuttanut yyyhtäään, että Archie Greene ja taikurin salaisuus kertoo erityisesti (maagisista) kirjoista ja niiden etsimisestä ja hoitamisesta...... <3 Hienosti kävi ilmi, kuinka kirjasta ei vielä kannen perustella voi päätellä oikeastaan mitään - ja kuinka hienoja aarteita/kauheita pelottavuuksia sieltä sisältä saattaakaan löytyä!
Minä tykkäsin siitä että tämän kirjan sankari oli ihan oikeasti sankari, eli hän otti asioista itsenäisesti selvää sekä otti vastuuta. Minusta nuo ovat hyviä ominaisuuksia kenelle tahansa. Tietysti nopea oppiminen ja ylivertaisuus pisti vähän kohottelemaan kulmia, mutta minkäs teet, sankari mikä sankari. :D No, oli sitä inhimillisyyttäkin ihan tarpeeksi...

The magical world in this book was wonderfully constructed but the plot seemed rushed. It is too easy to compare to Harry Potter but definitely has a magic all of its own.
A particular line – The word imagination comes from the same source as magic…. and that human imagination represents the last vestige of the magical power we all once possessed. (Brilliant!)
I enjoyed the story even if there were some convenient plot fillers to move the story at its rip-roaring pace.
Will look out for the next in the series – Archie Greene and the Alchemist’s curse.

NEED the sequel NOW! This was so BRILLIANT! Would recommend this for those who like Harry Potter.
Different type of magic than usually seen (hooray!). Good vs. evil. Exciting plot and setting and characters and ...sorry that I am gushing about this but saying nothing substantive.

This is clearly a kid's book but the genre listed on the price tag and the table this was in at the sale I went to said 'Young Adult' and that's how I found this even if I wasn't looking for a kid's book. I got it anyways cause it looked like fun.
The start was good with the illustration of the symbols and the info on it - the world building is fun spells and all. The story could've been really interesting but I couldn't stand the main character. I get that Archie had trouble trusting adults but after a while and a lot of dangerous things happening you'd think he'd have asked for help of any of the adults who had shown that they're trustworthy but instead, he kept information that could've helped and did adventures with 2 other people around his age who might know a lot more about magic than he does but they certainly don't know enough about the current situation.
This is a thing with many stories with main characters trying to solve everything but it just didn't appeal to me here cause instead of making progress that would get me excited and rooting for them, all that happened is they got a bunch of incomplete info, started speculating and never told anyone anything even if a bunch of opportunities presented themselves and people got in danger.
This isn't super bad of course as it was enjoyable enough for me to finish and would probably be something better liked by those whose in the age demographic it was trying to reach. Wish I knew this book wasn't for me earlier though before I bought it.

Archie Greene is an orphan - living with the only relation he has ever known, his grandmother. His parents and sister were killed when he was very young. His grandmother didn't tell Archie about his parents, or his past or about his other family members - apparently by the request of his late father.
The event that sets this story into motion is Archies 12th birthday and the arrival of a mysterious book with even more mysterious instructions. Although this comes as a surprise to Archie, his grandmother was expecting it.
This sets Archie off to Oxford and a whole world and family that he never knew existed. He is part of an age old group called the Flame Keepers who's sole mission is to find, repair and keep safe any magic books that they can - but most specifically a certain set of books called the Terrible Tomes which contain the most powerful and potentially dark magics.
This first novel in the Archie Greene series is a great read for any kids who like to read about magical adventures with some cool historical references thrown in. It takes you from the Library of Alexandria - to 1600s England back to modern day Oxford.
The ending of this book does get fairly intense and a bit scary - it may be a good idea to read the ending to gage whether you think they are ready for it. The rest of the book is easy to follow and very fun - perfect for ages 8-12.

Unfortunately, I could not stop myself from comparing this book to another middle-grade fantasy book starring an 11-12-ish boy in England *cough* Harry Potter *cough cough*.
It had its own 12-year-old orphan-ish boy (his parents and his older sister is gone since he was little for some reason ) who knew nothing of the magical world, who has a special power that no one in the magical world had for nearly 4 centuries , a "2 boys and 1 smart girl" trio, a unique and quirky family who sort of adopts the protagonist and teaches him about the magical world , a Prof.Snape -ish guy, the confrontation at the "mirror of erised" with Prof. Q moment, the "I am the only one who can proceed so you two stay here" moment, the Fluffy the three-headed-dog moment, leaky cauldron type bar (cafe?), a floo powder -ish transportation method, and its own "He who must not be named"... and many more.
I somewhat enjoyed the book, but sadly, there was nothing new.
I liked that it was set in the library, and I got to see books flying and talking. I liked that the Bodleian Library was connected to The Great Library of Alexandria and that it contains magical books from around the world.
(hmm. Bodleian Library and The Great Library of Alexandria appears in so many fantasy stories. I'm starting to think all those stories as stories set in parallel universes.)
I don't think I'll continue with this series.

Well, it's another Harry Potter wanna-be, and I am a sucker for them all. The premise was great: magical books can wreak havoc if not cared for properly, and evil people will seek to collect them. I can imagine the author a)is a bibliophile or librarian, and b) thought Rowling didn't address the topic of magical books sufficiently. However, it is a disappointing read. There is a shameful lack of continuity, the characters are mostly without depth, you do not become invested in the story, and thus drama and suspense fail to build. I kept reading until the end because I was hoping against hope that the author would find some way to tie this jumbled story together, but sadly that did not happen, and I was left with the dissatisfied feeling that you get when you finish a book that just didn't live up to a good standard. I gave it two stars for effort, premise idea, and I thought some of the writing wasn't bad. Maybe this mess is the editor's fault? If you appreciate good writing and being swept up in stories, give this one a pass, now matter how tempting the Harry Potter look-alike cover.

da www.ilmondodisopra.it Per ogni blogger arriva quell'attimo in cui scrivere di un libro che ti ha lasciato senza fiato diventa difficile. A volte si vorrebbe quasi custodire l'emozione che il libro ci ha suscitato, prenderlo e incartarlo per poi nasconderlo da qualche parte, chiuso in chissà quale cassaforte, per far sì che non venga mai ne' rovinato ne' usurato dal tempo. Ecco questo è esattamente il mio momento. E' difficile parlarvi dell'emozione che questo libro mi ha suscitato, ma piano piano con calma estrarrò dal pacchetto ogni emozione e vi lascerò guardare quei meravigliosi colori.
Quando mi hanno consegnato il libro sono stata colpita immediatamente dalla sovracopertina, catturata subito dai colori e come se non bastasse ecco che anche la copertina interna nasconde un tesoro meraviglioso, quasi come se presentasse già la ricchezza delle pagine che si scoprono all'interno.
L'autore già dalle prime pagine ci immerge in questo mondo popolato di libri e magia dove tutto viene scritto così naturalmente che sembra quasi irreale scoprire che in verità è frutto solo della sua fantasia e non realtà vera e propria. Difficilmente mi soffermo poi sul carattere della scrittura, ma anche questo carattere così studiato ha reso il tutto ancor più sublime.
Le descrizioni e le immagini che saltano agli occhi ci portano immediatamente nel mondo di Archie e arrivare alla parola fine, a quell'ultima pagina bianca diventa come uno strappo all'interno del nostro animo.
Il libro inizia con una torta di compleanno fatta di sardine e cioccolato perchè la suprema dote della padrona di casa è quella di combinare insieme strani ingredienti per far invidia anche al più grande vincitore di Masterchef.
Qualche chilometro più in là troviamo invece Horace Catchpole, socio dell’antico studio legale Folly & Catchpole. I suoi compiti sono sempre importanti e uno dei compiti che ci troviamo a leggere e ad affrontare con lui è quello della consegna di un pacco con allegata pergamena, niente di più semplice.
Ma ovviamente le cose più semplici si rivelano sempre le più difficili.
Quel pacco che da quattrocento anni aspettava di essere consegnato viene portato a destinazione in maniera errata poichè il nostro "postino" si dimentica di consegnare la cosa più importante, la pergamena allegata. E' qui che l'autore ci catapulta nel mondo di Archie, nel mondo di un ragazzino che compie dodici anni.
Potrei parlarvi ore dei personaggi strani che si incontrano in questo primo volume e della magia che assaporiamo in ogni pagina. C'è la nonna che fino adesso ha cercato di nascondere ad Archie, per il suo bene, la verità. C'è poi lo zio Caprifoglio che sbuca dallo stipetto di un mobile, c'è il libraio che è uno stregone, Arabella la libraia un po' impacciata e i cugini che aiuteranno Archie nella sua avventura.
Ci si innamorerà addirittura della voce dei libri, come non innamorarsi del Piccolo libro delle benedizioni e del suo essere così, lasciatemelo dire, tenero?
Ogni creatura, ogni magia, ogni essere di questo libro è minuziosamente studiato e ci si affeziona ad ognuno di loro, anche al drago chiuso nella camera della libreria!

Fidatevi le pagine scorreranno così velocemente che arrivati all'ultima sentirete il bisogno di ritrovare quei personaggi che così facilmente sono entrati nelle vostre vite.
Pagina dopo pagina l'autore ci porta in una libreria fantastica dove i libri parlano e cambiano posto a seconda delle loro voglie, dove le creature dei libri pop up possono uscire e crear disastri (attenti a non ritrovarvi un rinoceronte in camera!)
Sono rimasta completamente stregata da questo libro (non si è ancora capito vero?), la scrittura è armonia, è complessità, è tutto. Lo stile così semplice e pulito ci permette di immaginare tutto ciò che si legge, la curiosità sale pagina dopo pagina, il ritmo non si abbassa mai e l'autore riesce a catturare la nostra attenzione in ogni riga.
Arrivati a metà libro ci si ritrova quasi in un limbo, come se alla fine ci si ritrova a scegliere se continuare a divorare le pagine o a smettere per non perdere quell'emozione fantastica che il nostro animo sta ricevendo. Perchè nonostante sia una lettura per ragazzi questo libro riempe il cuore di quell'innocenza, di quella magia che ti fa sentire vivo, che ti fa sentire ancora bambino. E' come se ad un tratto cominciassimo a urlare io credo nelle fate! per lasciar in vita chissà quale fatina.
Mi sono immaginata lì nella libreria Isola di White nello Scrittoio della Grande galleria, mi sono immaginata lì nella stanza dove si ritrova il marchio e nel mio stesso palmo ho cercato quel marchio anch'io per capire a che genere di lavoro sui libri potessi appartenere.
Fino all'ultimo ho camminato accanto ai protagonisti cercando nelle parole dello scrittore la soluzione del dilemma, ho sospettato di molti personaggi cercando nei buoni qualche finto ed imbroglione e sono rimasta piacevolmente sorpresa da come poi avanza la storia.
L'avventura con Archie e i suoi amici diventa un viaggio, dove la voglia di scoprire cose e mondi nuovi è sempre più avvincente. E' un inizio favoloso e il seguito sembra ancora più sorprendente quando verso le ultime pagine la casa editrice ci lascia qualche estratto del secondo volume dove troviamo poi i miei amati corvi.
E' un libro che non può assolutamente mancare nelle librerie di ogni lettore. E' un libro che ci farà vedere ogni tomo in maniera diversa, è un libro che ci fa tornare bambini e ci fa tornare la voglia di credere nella magia del bene. E' un libro che ha il sapore dolce del cioccolato e che profuma di buono.
E' un libro che ci insegna a capire quanto sia importante leggere e credere nei viaggi che si esplorano con le parole. E' un libro che ci insegna a scoprire i tesori nascosti di ogni volume.
E' una serie avvincente, da non sottovalutare e da venerare in ogni suo splendore.

L'autore già dalle prime pagine ci immerge in questo mondo popolato di libri e magia dove tutto viene scritto così naturalmente che sembra quasi irreale scoprire che in verità è frutto solo della sua fantasia e non realtà vera e propria. Difficilmente mi soffermo poi sul carattere della scrittura, ma anche questo carattere così studiato ha reso il tutto ancor più sublime.
Le descrizioni e le immagini che saltano agli occhi ci portano immediatamente nel mondo di Archie e arrivare alla parola fine, a quell'ultima pagina bianca diventa come uno strappo all'interno del nostro animo.
Il libro inizia con una torta di compleanno fatta di sardine e cioccolato perchè la suprema dote della padrona di casa è quella di combinare insieme strani ingredienti per far invidia anche al più grande vincitore di Masterchef.
Qualche chilometro più in là troviamo invece Horace Catchpole, socio dell’antico studio legale Folly & Catchpole. I suoi compiti sono sempre importanti e uno dei compiti che ci troviamo a leggere e ad affrontare con lui è quello della consegna di un pacco con allegata pergamena, niente di più semplice.
Ma ovviamente le cose più semplici si rivelano sempre le più difficili.
Quel pacco che da quattrocento anni aspettava di essere consegnato viene portato a destinazione in maniera errata poichè il nostro "postino" si dimentica di consegnare la cosa più importante, la pergamena allegata. E' qui che l'autore ci catapulta nel mondo di Archie, nel mondo di un ragazzino che compie dodici anni.
Potrei parlarvi ore dei personaggi strani che si incontrano in questo primo volume e della magia che assaporiamo in ogni pagina. C'è la nonna che fino adesso ha cercato di nascondere ad Archie, per il suo bene, la verità. C'è poi lo zio Caprifoglio che sbuca dallo stipetto di un mobile, c'è il libraio che è uno stregone, Arabella la libraia un po' impacciata e i cugini che aiuteranno Archie nella sua avventura.
Ci si innamorerà addirittura della voce dei libri, come non innamorarsi del Piccolo libro delle benedizioni e del suo essere così, lasciatemelo dire, tenero?
Ogni creatura, ogni magia, ogni essere di questo libro è minuziosamente studiato e ci si affeziona ad ognuno di loro, anche al drago chiuso nella camera della libreria!

Fidatevi le pagine scorreranno così velocemente che arrivati all'ultima sentirete il bisogno di ritrovare quei personaggi che così facilmente sono entrati nelle vostre vite.
Pagina dopo pagina l'autore ci porta in una libreria fantastica dove i libri parlano e cambiano posto a seconda delle loro voglie, dove le creature dei libri pop up possono uscire e crear disastri (attenti a non ritrovarvi un rinoceronte in camera!)
Sono rimasta completamente stregata da questo libro (non si è ancora capito vero?), la scrittura è armonia, è complessità, è tutto. Lo stile così semplice e pulito ci permette di immaginare tutto ciò che si legge, la curiosità sale pagina dopo pagina, il ritmo non si abbassa mai e l'autore riesce a catturare la nostra attenzione in ogni riga.
Arrivati a metà libro ci si ritrova quasi in un limbo, come se alla fine ci si ritrova a scegliere se continuare a divorare le pagine o a smettere per non perdere quell'emozione fantastica che il nostro animo sta ricevendo. Perchè nonostante sia una lettura per ragazzi questo libro riempe il cuore di quell'innocenza, di quella magia che ti fa sentire vivo, che ti fa sentire ancora bambino. E' come se ad un tratto cominciassimo a urlare io credo nelle fate! per lasciar in vita chissà quale fatina.
Mi sono immaginata lì nella libreria Isola di White nello Scrittoio della Grande galleria, mi sono immaginata lì nella stanza dove si ritrova il marchio e nel mio stesso palmo ho cercato quel marchio anch'io per capire a che genere di lavoro sui libri potessi appartenere.
Fino all'ultimo ho camminato accanto ai protagonisti cercando nelle parole dello scrittore la soluzione del dilemma, ho sospettato di molti personaggi cercando nei buoni qualche finto ed imbroglione e sono rimasta piacevolmente sorpresa da come poi avanza la storia.
L'avventura con Archie e i suoi amici diventa un viaggio, dove la voglia di scoprire cose e mondi nuovi è sempre più avvincente. E' un inizio favoloso e il seguito sembra ancora più sorprendente quando verso le ultime pagine la casa editrice ci lascia qualche estratto del secondo volume dove troviamo poi i miei amati corvi.
E' un libro che non può assolutamente mancare nelle librerie di ogni lettore. E' un libro che ci farà vedere ogni tomo in maniera diversa, è un libro che ci fa tornare bambini e ci fa tornare la voglia di credere nella magia del bene. E' un libro che ha il sapore dolce del cioccolato e che profuma di buono.
E' un libro che ci insegna a capire quanto sia importante leggere e credere nei viaggi che si esplorano con le parole. E' un libro che ci insegna a scoprire i tesori nascosti di ogni volume.
E' una serie avvincente, da non sottovalutare e da venerare in ogni suo splendore.

Leider nicht annähernd so gut wie Harry Potter... Die Charaktere werden nur oberflächlich beschrieben, so fühlt man sich als LeserIn nicht wirklich ins Geschehen hineingezogen. Die Magie der Bücher ist zwar interessant (und die Idee, den Eingang zur magischen Bibliothek in einem Schoko-Café zu verstecken, fand ich sehr süß :-), aber auch hier vermisse ich die Liebe zum Detail. Die Lehre als magischer Buchbinder hätte meiner Meinung nach mehr Raum verdient, stattdessen lernt Archie ja fast nichts, sondern stolpert nur von einem Botengang zum nächsten. Auch der Showdown am Schluss wirkt nie so, als könnte Archie ernsthaft in Gefahr sein. Vielmehr scheint es auch ohne magische Vorbildung für einen Buchflüsterer ein Leichtes zu sein, seinen bösen Gegenspieler auszuschalten - dass er dabei Hilfe vom Buch der Segenssprüche (nomen est omen!) erhält, ist leider auch nicht sehr überraschend....
Fazit: Viel Potenzial, aber es verpufft leider aufgrund der Oberflächlichkeit der Erzählung. Schade.

June 6, 2019All in all, this is a fun, wholesome, magical adventure. If you are looking for a Potter-like book that isn't as dark as the Voldemort theme or as text dense, then Archie is your choice of reads.

Un livre très sympathique et agréable. Les personnages sont des enfants très choux et qui donnent envie de poursuivre l'histoire. On ne peut malheureusement pas découvrir le fin mot de l'histoire comme on peut le faire dans un livre policier. C'est un peu dommage, car étant un livre jeunesse, les enfants ont certainement envie de pouvoir participer.

Purchased for my 10 year old grandson. It was a little over his head so it might be at a 6th grade level. I finished reading the book and had not decided if I should save it or not as it did not stimulate my imagination the way I thought it should.

Eine interessante und schöne magische Welt, die hier geschaffen wurde. Teilweise sind die Charaktere und Handlungsstränge leider etwas oberflächlich und "einfach" aufgebaut. Vor allem vom Finale hätte ich mir etwas mehr erhofft.

This book has very choppy writing and it is difficult sometimes to tell what's going on. It feels like a Harry Potter knock-off.
My boys, ages 10-14 liked it well enough as I read aloud to them. But it was a chore for me to get through.
