Paddington #8

Paddington Goes to Town

Rate this book
Paddington has warmed the hearts of generations of readers with his earnest good intentions and humorous misadventures. This audio edition of the classic novel contains the original text by Michael Bond.

Paddington doesn’t intentionally turn his friend’s wedding into an uproar by getting the wedding ring stuck on his paw. Nor does he plan for Mr. Curry to slip on his marmalade sandwich in the middle of an important golf shot. But these sorts of things and more just happen when Paddington goes to town.

First published in 1968, Paddington Goes to Town is the eighth novel chronicling the adventures of Michael Bond's beloved classic character, Paddington Bear.

More shenanigans from Britain’s favourite bear and hard stares galore. The scene where Paddington sees a psychiatrist is possibly my favourite Paddington moment so far.

Now, where did I put that marmalade sandwich?

More of the marmalade-loving bear's hilarious adventures and misadventures, during which he has plenty of opportunities to direct his "hard stare" (handed down from his Aunt Lucy in Peru) at those who displease him. I especially enjoyed the chapters where he ushers at a wedding and visits a psychiatrist when he goes to the hospital to see his malingering neighbor, Mr. Curry. Of course, everything always turns out all right.

Michael Bond's wonderful Paddington Bear stories are as much fun to read as an adult as they were when I was a child. Light & fun, with some lovely laugh out loud moments.

this book is about Paddington bear. He is from darkest Peru. He left Peru in a boat and went to London. The Browns found him at Paddington station.
In this book Paddington goes to a wedding where he is an usher and gets the bride's wedding ring stuck round a bend on his paw. As always with Paddington everything goes wrong.
I think this book is excellent. It made me laugh a lot. I love all Paddington books.

I loved the chapter where Paddington wants to visit Mr Curry in the hospital but ends up seeing and talking to a Psychiatrist by mistake. It was probably one of the funniest moments in the Paddington Series.

Like I've said before many times I really enjoy this series and highly recommend it to the younger audience.

Brilliant! Just Brilliant! The Paddington series were the first stories I remember at infant school. I purchased these as the have the original, and best, illustrations by Peggy Fortnum.

Paddington goes to town, - and does a lot more. Is there anything that needs to be said regarding his stories? Funny, cute, lovely, entertaining, you name it.

If Paddington lived in the United States, this would have been an entirely different story.

I loved the Paddington books, as a child. My imagination was captured by these stories of the orphaned bear found in a London railway station, who makes his home with the Brown family and their housekeeper Mrs Bird. Each book consists of a series of stories about the small bear, who gets himself into difficult situations, often due to misunderstandings or over-enthusiasm.

This book is eighth or ninth in the series but it's not necessary to have read any others. This one begins with Paddington being an usher at a friend’s wedding, rather to his family’s surprise. Further chapters see him trying to play golf, being mistaken for a foreign doctor, helping his best friend Mr Gruber to finish touch on his patio, and going carol singing. The stories are light but amusing; written for children of perhaps eight to ten years old, they’re not condescending and never use ‘simple’ language.

This would make an ideal bedtime read-aloud for any child from the age of about five and upwards. It appeals to both boys and girls, and if the conversation and events seem dated at times, they could provide a good starting point for discussions about life in the 1960s for an upper-middle class English family.

Four and a half stars, really.

It has been over a year since I picked up one of Michael Bond's delightful Paddington stories. This week, I corrected this by reading the "Paddington Goes to Town" - the eighth book in the series.

For those who do not know, Paddington is an anthropomorphic bear from darkest Peru, adopted by the Brown family in London. He means well, but he has a knack for getting into and out of trouble.

Like its predecessors, this volume contains seven stories. The bear serves as a wedding usher but accidentally gets the bride's ring stuck on his paw; his grumpy neighbor, Mr. Curry, coerces Paddington into caddying for a golf contest; Paddington spends two stories in the hospital trying to visit Mr. Curry after his injury on the golf course; the silly bear searches for the perfect ornament to enhance the garden of his friend Mr. Gruber; he sets out singing carols, but ends up as a waiter at a private party; and he causes confusion when Londoners mistake him for a busker and drop money in his hat.

Paddington confuses himself and others because he takes everything literally and responds accordingly. He assumes his role as a wedding usher is to 'ush anyone who speaks. The hospital receptionist refers to a psychiatrist as a "head-shrinker," which makes little sense to the bear. He is confused by the phrase "Vladimir's beside himself." When asked if he has experience waiting, he misunderstands that the lady wants to know if he has ever waited on tables and describes the time he had to wait for a bus.

"Paddington Goes to Town" is another delightful collection from Michael Bond.

Tym razem niedżwiadek powraca do Was w książce „Paddington wyrusza do miasta”.

W książce spotkamy wszystkich znanych nam z poprzednich części bohaterów: Jonathana i Judytę, państwa Brownów, panią Bird, pana Grubera i pana Curry’ego. Z wyrozumiałością i troską przyjmują wszystkie nieszczęśliwe wypadki Paddingtona, wspierając niedźwiadka w chwilach zwątpienia i niezamierzonych katastrof.

I thought that this was a fun book! Especially if you have seen either the movie or the series about Paddington! I loved how things were very similar and I feel as though some of the chapters were episodes from the series. Loved it!
Oh! And I felt like I could almost hear Mr. Cury yelling, "Bear!" It was fantastic!
