Three couples. Three countries. One War...

On August 5th 1914, the world changed forever. For John and Beth Young, it meant the happiness they finally achieved was snatched out from under them. For Emma Cote, it meant that her husband Jared would do his duty, despite her feelings. For Christy Simmons it meant an uncertain future with the boy she loved. The lives of six people, spread across the British Empire to America were changed forever.

When John, Jared and Will find themselves thrust together in France and Emma and Christy decide to seek out their missing husbands, the lives of these three families intertwine in ways that none of them could possibly have imagined. Working together in a field hospital, Emma and Christy learn to rely on and protect each other. Lost together in a strange forest and cut off from their unit, the three soldiers run and hide.

But the further they go, the more they realize that the chances of all of them making it out unscathed are nonexistent and Emma and Christy find that blood is not easy to wash off, but no friendship is stronger than that made during times of war, sacrifice and healing.

From as far back as she can remember, Erica Marie Hogan loved to write. When she was a little girl, she adored make believe, but gradually her imagination became too big to restrict it to playtime and so, she wrote.
She lives to plot new stories, enjoys a good tear-jerker, and chocolate is her cure for any ailment.
Erica’s wish is to continue to write stories that not only drop her readers into the middle of historical time periods, but also to show the ability to rise up out of adversity and tragedy. When it comes to genre, she has no limits.

The Lost Generation by Erica Marie Hogan is a must read. It's so rare to find such a powerful, gripping story that pays tribute to those who have served during wartimes to protect their country and loved ones without detouring plot-wise into the politics/debate of whether the war (in this case, WWI) was necessary. What I really enjoyed about this story were the perspectives from three different couples from three different countries, as well as a clever showing of Elizabeth Kubler Ross's 5 stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance... yet this story wasn't all gloom and doom. Love, friendship, sacrifice, and healing are portrayed beautifully led by the author's unashamed showing of God's daily role in both peaceful and horrific times.

I'm looking forward to reading more by this author!

I didn't want this story to end. The Lost Generation is a heartbreaking, yet beautifully faithful tale of love and hope in the midst of crisis. Ms. Hogan's characters spring to life, and when I finished the book I felt that I was saying goodbye to friends. I walked away from the story with a different perspective and a keen awareness of the frailty of life and the sacrifice that the generation of 1914 made to preserve the future.

Ms. Hogan crafts a masterful story, which is simply unforgettable. I cannot wait to read more from this author.

The Lost Generation by Erica Marie Hogan

The Lost Generation starts before the beginning of World War I and continues until around the 1980's. It is a story about the effects of war on people, and the emotional journeys of three families and how they are connected even though they are from different lands. It is a special glimpse into the hearts of these people, their struggles, pain and joy, the peace that comes from closure and their faith. This story was an emotional ride for me as the reader. I was engaged to my husband when he went to Vietnam as a Marine, and the parallels were very impacting on me as I read the book. It is so real I had to stop myself at times from praying for the families in the book, as if I had met and known them personally. The author's perception of what it was like during and after World War I is quite amazing. As I read the pages I shed tears and experienced the horrors of that war and the pain it caused. It is a story that shows the resiliency of men and women, their amazing love, determination and courage; and it has an exceptional ending. A wonderful and inspiring read.

This is a tough review to write. The author did a great job of tackling such a difficult time period. I felt like she tackled the pain and suffering of war very well; this story is realistically heart wrenching. And I appreciated that she dove in to tell such a story as it's an important time period in history. For these reasons, I wanted to give the book four stars.

However, I gave the book three stars, because the writing felt jumpy. I felt like the author jumped around too much and I got lost in certain parts. I also found the prologue to be too confusing and vague; I understood the author's intention with it yet felt that it weakened the story.

I'm interested to see what else the author writes as I think she has great potential.

While the characters and their stories are fictional, the author paints a realistic picture of the horrors our men and women fighting overseas during WWI would have endured. The book follows the story of 6 characters. She tells the story from both perspectives, those who fought and their loved ones left behind at home when the call of duty came, and how they coped with the tragedy of WWI. No one had any peace, no matter where they were or who was with them. I cannot imagine how anyone from that generation coped with their new reality both during and after the war's end. There is no way for us to thank these men and women for their sacrifices.

I love everything about this book! The characters, the story, everything! Ms. Hogan brought to life what people went through, not only on the battlefield, but back home as well during the tragedy of World War One. Faith was tested, the struggle realistically portrayed. The love between the characters and their endurance was strong during a difficult and tragic time. It's a truly moving book.

I enjoyed this book taking me through the lives of several different people during a time that is not always talked as much about in novels.
There were a few small plot holes that I found I struggled with, but overall, it was enjoyable for me.
