Rate this book
Trudy Andrich is doing all she can to help the war effort as the Allied and Axis powers clash across the Atlantic and Pacific. As a Women Airforce Service Pilot (WASP), Trudy is one of the most knowledgeable flyers of the P-51 Mustang. She is in full command of one of the fastest airplanes ever made, but she is forbidden from going into combat because of her gender.

Trudy is shocked when her dream of going to the front lines is fulfilled. The Office of Strategic Services (OSS) needs a pilot to sneak into German-occupied Lithuania and rescue a professor whose work could have international implications.

But first, Trudy will have to get there. As Trudy crosses the United States and Canada with her handsome traveling partner, Major Rod Jackson, she sees the many different ways Americans and Canadians are helping on the home front. Her new base of operations in Duxford, England, will also give her a front-row seat to the violent, deadly aerial battles of the European theater. Trudy is determined to fight to protect the Allies, but will she make it out of her first operation alive?

Hard to believe!

Very interesting story that at times I thought that it may have been fiction. Not so! One of those WW2 stories that show that the impossible was not impossible after all. I have flown planes myself and that just makes the story even better.

This is the story of Trudy, a WASP, who gets sucked into a secret mission. My biggest complaint was that I thought it was too short (I enjoy really, really, really long books - much like things that John Ringo, SM Sterling, and Michael Z. Williamson write). This is one of those novels that starts out interesting, slows down, and kicks it into overdrive. The character development is a bit slow in coming, but is realized by the end of the novel. I think the best way to state that is that the characters are much like Willem Defoe in "To Live and Die in LA" (where you hate him) and "Platoon" where you recognize "Hey, this is a good guy" and you realize that Defoe is truly a great actor.

There are several unexpected twists and turns in this book. Surprisingly, unlike many authors, where it's easy to see the end coming, this one didn't.

I think the best thing the author could do is follow this up with a backstory and then a sequel.

Actually, I lied - my biggest complaint (and the authors says he'll take care of in future editions) was using the wrong phonetic alphabet. Oboe, not Oscar!

Other than that, a very enjoyable read.. Highly recommended.

Wasp Sting is a slight departure into historical fiction for Lee Sweetapple in that the story is set based on actual organizations and events that happened during World War II and the Women AirForce Service Pilots. These women, members of what's been called The Greatest Generation, not only did their part for the war effort but they did in in the hazardous field of flight!

This setting provides the background for the adventures of the female main character: Trudy Andrich, ace pilot and a trained "behind the lines" operative. You get a clear story, with good flow and supporting characters that give you a picture of the world in which Trudy and her peers of the time lived. Lee writes with first hand experience of what its like to be at the controls of a P-51 Mustang and one need only engage one's imagination but slightly to feel to be actually flying one!

The storyline keeps things moving, with nice descriptions of places and persons which help the reader see things as Trudy did during the adventure. The twists and turns the story takes near the end will most likely surprise the reader, Lee Sweetapple tries and is definitely not predictable as an author. All this adds up to a book that doesn't take long to read, will entertain you and give you an idea of the women of the W.A.S.P during the second world war.

Lee Sweetapple delivers the goods once again with Wasp Sting. I've read his previous work which dealt with the adventures of Jim Stillwater and his many cohorts in a cloak and dagger world replete with colorful characters and plots within plots. These works, are very entertaining in their own right and the character development done as one reads one book after the other is quite enjoyable.

This story features the highflying adventures of Trudy Andrich, a P-51 Mustang, Women Airforce Service Pilot (WASP) test pilot, that is offered the opportunity to put her amazing piloting skills to the test during an unusual top secret mission over the front lines during WWII. Trudy has many hidden abilities that she has the chance to put to practical use both in the air and on the ground. I found this book to be a riveting ride and a compelling read that kept my interest from beginning to end. I felt the character development was superb as I was drawn into the read as if I was there personally witnessing and participating in Trudy's extremely dangerous mission to stop the Nazis from discovering the hidden life sculpting secrets of DNA and it’s ability to aid in the creation of the Super race! Will Trudy be able to rescue the esteemed scientist and his wife first? Do things ever go as expected? I highly recommend you read this book to find out! This another exceptionally well-done work of authorship by Lee Sweetapple! I can hardly wait for next historically driven work of fiction! As an avid reader and book critic, I will be following this author's works very closely. Very well done!

Wasp Sting is a riveting story of an intrepid female pilot flying Mustang fighters for the Women Airforce Service Pilots in WWII. Despite her expertise, regulations forbid her from flying combat missions. Her longing to serve on the front lines becomes possible when she is offered a rescue mission in Nazi-occupied Lithuania. Her travails to accomplish this task create a riveting read that I highly recommend.

The plot moves along nicely with enough twists and turns to keep even the most jaded reader of WWII fiction interested. The historical details are well-researched and incorporated into the story in just the right amount to keep it from being bogged down with minutiae. Character development was good, especially for such a short book.

All in all, an outstanding read.

Fighter fun over Europe

Fun and high drama, especially humorous. Decent aviation knowledge. WWII drama. Hardly high literature, entertaining. Girl pilot on a mission, should be easy to do serial books. Women warriors should be happily received today. Flying period fighter aircraft added spice, as did glamorous leads (20 Words is a silly requirement, don’t you think?) Really didn’t dislike anything.

Good Read

Good story, but needs development and fleshing out. Learn to use contractions in dialogue to aid with a more natural speech rhythm.

I would like to thank Goodreads for providing a copy of this book for review.
Trudy Andrich is a WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilots), who is chosen to fly one of two Mustang P-51s to England to be used in a secret mission. Upon her arrival in England, she is assigned with Major Rod Jackson to fly into Lithuania to rescue a Professor before the Russians arrive. Trudy is an accomplished pilot and a resourceful character who is not fully confident in the Major and his ability to carry out the mission.

Lee Sweetapple has written a beautiful tribute to the WASPs and their accomplishments in WWII. While He does not fill the pages with technical information on the planes, his descriptions of Trudy's maneuvers and the plane's capabilities held my interest. He paints a vivid picture of England at war that makes it easy to imagine the bunkers and airfields as actions are plotted and carried out.

For any reader interested in WWII stories, I would highly recommend this book.

I received this book in a Goodreads contest for an honest review.

I really wanted to like this book; but I knew by the shortness of it that it would be hard for Sweetapple to develop the characters and he failed miserably. I found I was often re reading a paragraph to find out who was speaking and the story was so rushed that I plowed through it just so I could finish the book. I gave it 3 stars only because this book could be great. I hope Sweetapple goes back and re writes this book; developing the characters and the story line . The story line was so rushed it became non important to me and the end of the book seemed to be the main reason to continue. Unfortunately even that was predictable. I really hope to see Wasp Sting re written and to be able to fall into a great plot with interesting characters who hold your attention.

It is amazing what our WASP pilots did and how they have not been given credit for their contribution to WWII. This book takes the real abilities and hardships of the WASPs and turns it into a thrilling storyy.
