WARNING: Due to strong content, violence and sexual scenes not recommended for under 17.
I was fortunate enough to get to read this book in its many stages and I am so happy with how it turned out.
This story is not your typical boy meets girl, boy and girl flirt and then they all live happily ever after. No. It has depth, grit, meat to it. I am going to sing the praises of this book without giving away too much, and if I do, you still NEED to read this. That's an order.
See, in this particular story, girl meets suave, successful boy and falls for him. But this boy is an evil bastard. With a capital E. He is not the one she is meant for. No siree. Girl gets away, meets up with Prince Charming type who she has known all her life and then things get AMAZING!!!
All in all, not your typical HEA. I loved this book because it was about finding yourself, being a fighter, a strong woman who is a survivor. Eventhough you may have to kiss a bunch of retarded frogs, at the end of the line is your prince. This book, to me, is also about redemption, finding family where you would least expect it and not being afraid to face your demons. This book touched me personally and not just because I know the author. This book spoke to my heart and soul. It made me think long after I read it and it made me say a silent prayer to all the women out there who are strong or have to be as strong as the heroine in this book.
Please, do yourself a favor and read this. Not once, but twice. You will not regret it!
If I Could I’d Wish It All Away by Lisa Helen Gray
Lola Lawson has had a rough past she finally ends and abusive relationship. She returns to a safe place with good memories. After 16 years Lola steps foot back to Cabin Lakes, as there he was Dean Salvatore her crush from high school. Lola and Dean become close; he will love to make her forget her hurtful past. Will her past destroy anything that could ever have?
OMFG…I do not know where Lisa Helen Gray has been. This is her debut novel and it knocked my socks off! Lisa is an amazing writer. She has a pure talent in pulling in the reader. I must have said a thousands time five more minutes and I just could not put this book down. This book will touch anyone who reads it. It has a fair about excitement, emotional bond and a beautifully written love story. Lola and Dean interactions melted my heart. I enjoy a book with a lot of feelings this put me right inside both Lola and Dean souls. I love her writing style the words just flow together and was a very easy fast read and I think that is a big reason I will read this author again and again. This book come highly recommended I give it a 5 out 5 stars.
I was pulled right into this story. The story has abuse, pain, anger, secrets, laughs, and heartbreak.
This is Lola and Dean’s story. Lola ran from her abusive boyfriend. She went back to her home on Cabin Lakes. There she re-connects with her best friend. She ran from the place after she lost her parents and has not been back for years. Now she needs the love and support that she always go while she was there. The more Lola and Dean re-connect the more they want each other. But is Lola ready for that? What happens when her ex tracts her down. Will she go back to him if it protects everyone she loves? Or will she finally break free from the abuse and pain?
I loved these characters and also the side characters. I felt I was able to connect with the characters and the story was a great read.
I received this ARC in exchanged of an HONEST review
1st - I would like to say 2014 is becoming a year of so many amazing NEW authors!! And Lisa Helen Gray is one of them, in my opinion!
This is her debut novel, and let me just say, with just the title, she had me hooked.
-If I could I would wish it all away- I would too; I think there isn’t a person in the world that wouldn’t! Everyone has secrets or little bits and pieces of ourselves we would like to change or erase!
This book is about Lola. This is her story! She went for what looked like the easy and safe relationship for her and she settled. For five long years she settled herself in an abusive relationship with Patrick “Rick” but for any reason what so ever I shall mention him as the BS!
Lola is a very strong woman, I would like to say she should be the role model for all the women out there with an abusive relationships! You can, and you must say, enough is enough! It’s never too late to defend yourself and grab the reigns of your life!
And with that attitude Lola runs away from the BS and goes back to Cabe Lake, her childhood cabin! Where she feels connected to her deceased parents, and she reconnects with her parents old friends and her childhood crush! A place where she feels safe!
Here we meet, Dean, the childhood crush.. but he is not a boy anymore, with 6’2 he is all man! Dean is very protective of Lola, he is a caring soul and tries his best to bring the old Lola back, unfortunately to accomplish that he needs to take his time trying to make her leave the shell she created around her, in the same time trying to find what happen to her and of course breaking the walls she built around her heart and try to win it at the end! :)
Happy note: Lola gets her very well deserved HEA, the road to get there wasn’t easy, but I think the important message that I am taking with me from this is – WITH friends you can do EVERYTHING! -
This book was well written, we get to the very end living through the characters, getting all the emotions, their dreams, their wishes and regrets. The book is about 130 pages so there isn’t time to put it down, it’s one of those books you just want to hug the MC and tell her everything will be alright at the end! As the writing, it was fast paced.. I read it in one-go! It had some really funny moments, some drama, a lot of OMG moments and a few moments where it made me want to get inside the book to shake some characters or stalk the author and shake her for making me so anxious. It can be described as a roller coaster of emotions, the plot was perfect, very good and supportive characters, yes there were some places where we get some missing details, and I would like a little behind the scenes about Lola past and her parents but as the author first book I can’t be too demanding, but I can honestly say I am intrigued where Lisa H. Gray will go next! And I can tell you I will be there to find out! I am really thankful for the chance of reading this before it got published and for the Author to trust me with her first babe! 5 STARS!! :) Something that i do with ALL my reviews - the songs I choose to describe this book are from The Fray -How to save a life and Bruno Mars- Count on me!
This book brought out so many emotions in me, I felt like I was on an emotional roller coaster. I am going to try and make this review make sense. After I finished reading this book I was left with a massive book hangover. I haven’t even been able to start anything new, I had to re read one of my favourite books to try and clear my head. Just like Lisa’s previous books that I have read, I was instantly gripped and felt like I was inside the book watching the story happen. There was a line that the heroine Lola said during the book that connected with my heart because every single word is true to me, the line was ‘’ Whenever I read a good book I get lost in the story. It’s like watching a movie inside my mind and everything around me is still. Nothing else exists’’. I love both hero and heroine in this story but I also loved Lola’s new best friends, Pagan and Brooke. This book takes its readers on a journey of escape, love, grief and acceptance of the future. Lola is an awesome character, she is strong, caring, loving and she is an awesome friend! Dean is Lola’s protector and he will do anything to keep the love of his life safe. I was in tears at parts of this story, I was completely balling my eyes out at the in between after life scene with Lola’s parents & the letter at the wedding scene. I will definitely be re reading this book again in the future.
When Lola Lawson lost her parents when she was twelve years old, she shut out her parent’s best friends and their children. Now sixteen years later and on the run from an abusive boyfriend, Lola returns to Cabin Lake and the comforting arms of the family she shut out so many years ago. Being back at Cabin Lake brings back a lot of happy memories; Lola struggles to remember why she ever shut out the Salvatore’s. Lola and Dean Salvatore used to be best friends, and she had a massive crush on him, now that they are all grown up, the pair grow close once again. After learning of what happened to Lola, Dean soon becomes her protector, he shows her what life with him and his family can be like. But just as Lola starts to feel safe and happy, an incident at a charity party happens, leaving Lola once again on edge. When Lola and Dean finally are able to move on from the past and move forward in their new relationship, the past comes back to haunt Lola, and it soon becomes a race against time for Dean to find and save Lola. But will he get to Lola on time? Or will it be too late?
Lisa Helen Gray quickly stole my heart in the writing world with her Carter brothers series and since then, I have been a loyal fan, seeking out each new release in that series. And while I am only familiar with her writing in one way with those delicious boy, this was a nice change and a story I wasn't expecting at all.
If I Could Wish It All Away was an emotionally-charged romance that kept me on my toes the entire time and pulled at my heartstrings. Lisa pulled me right in from the first page and by the end, I will captivated by these two, not putting them down until long after the pages quit turning.
Now for the main course... Lola and Dean.... *sigh*.... I really liked these two and even more....Dean made me swoon and fall head over heels in love. Their story and path was full of ups, downs, and everything in between yet I still found myself rooting for these two.
Take a chance on this story and be ready for steam, feels, love, and second chances.
Lisa Helen Gray's debut novel was really good. The story surrounds Lola a girl on the run from her ex-boyfriend. This story highlights an issue that so many women go through but are to afraid to speak out about. Lola gets tired of the way that Rick(her ex-boyfriend) treats her and goes on the run. She runs to a place that her parents loved and a place where she knew should could heal and feel safe. I enjoyed that the story reconnects love, it takes you on a journey of a woman healing and trying to be stronger and most of all LOVE.
Overall, I enjoyed the story however I felt that I needed just a little bit more something to be emotional connected to Lola. Then there was Dean. He was sweet, protective and funny. I didn't fall head over heal with Dean but I felt his character was ok. I would definitely recommend that you read this book and go on rollercoaster of events and emotions that is 'If I could I'd wish it all away'
This is a fantastic novel that had me gripped from the start.
The story is centred around the two main characters Lola and Dean. Lola is trying to escape her past and start a new life having just fled from an abusive partner. She moves back to her families cabin and meets up with her childhood friend Dean. The two immediately reconnect and their feelings for each other develop. Lola knows that Dean will not hurt her in any way and begins to open up to him about her past. I won't give anything away but I will say that you really must read this or add it to your TBR.
It is beautifully written and a very emotional read - I believe that you won't be disappointed. Looking forward to reading more from this author.
This is a story of starting over, second chances, and finally getting the love that you deserve. But sometimes it isn't always that easy, sometimes the past follows you. Lola is in an abusive relationship that she hasn't been able to escape for 5 years. When she is finally able to get away she moves back to her childhood cabin where her deceased parents best friends still live. Their son Dean, her childhood crush, is no longer a boy, but has grown into a hot as hell man. Old flames are rekindled. This book was emotional, heartbreaking, and had me on the edge of my seat until the very end. This is a great debut novel and I can't wait to read future books from this author!
Wow! If I Could I'd Wish It All Away blown me away! I never expected it to be this good! I started it and never put it down until it's finished! This book I guess is for all us women.. for being strong wjen we stumble ot fall and be brave enough to pick up all the broken pieces and bounce back. I just love how the Lisa, the author, gives a very clear description of Dean that leaves me drooling.. LOL! Lola is clearly an exmple of how brave a woman can be.. This book is a HEA, it's a complete package- angst, hot romance, suspense and humor! I loved it!
This book isnt your typical boy meets girl, fall in love at first sight etc etc.... it really has some strong issues raised. I thought they were well addressed and wrote about.
The way this book was written really made me feel like I was part of the story, I really wanted happiness for Lola, I love Dean, a man that reads & is a hot alpha who wouldnt lol..... they were perfect together he was such a gent :)
Ill definatly be recommending this book to friends... it made a nice change to read a gritty romance novel with real life issues that still had a HEA!!!
*****4.5 stars******* Lola and Dean don't have they typical love story, and this makes it beautiful. The struggles and pain Lola faced in her life and continues to confront as she tries to hide make her a strong and fierce woman, but she loves with her whole heart. Dean has his own issues and the love and protectiveness he has for Lola shines through every page of this book. It is sweet, it is gritty and has angst that will pull on your heartstrings. You won't be sorry you picked this up-
Lisa did an incredible job with this book! Enough angst and 'edge of seat' moments to keep me gripped the whole way through and some special little 'awww' moments that brought a tear to my eye. I don't want to say much because I don't want to ruin the story for anyone before they read it, but it's definitely a 5* read and I can't think of a single reason that anyone would say otherwise!
I loved this book. I've been a fan of this author for awhile but this book spoke to me especially since I've experienced some of the things that happened in the book so it was like oh i remember exactly how she felt in the book and it was such an awesome "story" for such intense scenes and in the end I'm glad she found her champion Dean and got her HEA. Highly recommend this to anyone.
For a debut novel this book is well written. There is enough to make you fall in love. It proves that anyone can rise up from the ashes and heal themselves while finding love along the way. I see nothing but great things from her and I am excited to see where she goes.
This is an amazing book with an amazing story .It will take you through every emotion possible it's not a soft romance book, it takes you on one lady's journey through hell with an abusive boyfriend and through finding true love with an amazing man
I love Lisa Helen Gray! Every book I have ever read of hers has kept me turning the page for more and not wanting to put the book down. I love Lola and Dean and their story. A must read for sure.
If you are reading this know that I am writing this review with tears streaming down my face. Parts of this book had my heart swell with warmth while other parts completely broke me into a million little pieces. This was brilliant, touching, and beautiful, just like all of Lisa’s books.
This book follows Lola who escapes her abusive ex and returns to her hometown where she reconnects with her first crush Dean. Dean helps Lola accept that she is not broken and needs to accept that she deserves a future. Her story is traumatizing, vulnerable, and heartbreaking but her story also shows that she is strong, independent, and a beautiful person. Dean is loving and protective and so supportive of Lola and going on at her pace. He would wait a lifetime for her. Dean and Lola have a relationship that is pure and beautiful. Everyone deserves to have a love like theirs, their love story brought a swarm of butterflies to my stomach and made my heart warm and fuzzy.
This book was beautiful and has an important message as it reflects what happened in the author's life. As Lisa said in her author’s note, you deserve to be loved and cherished and deserve to have someone who would cut off their own hand then raise their hand to you. She wants women who are in a relationship like Lola’s to seek help because life is not supposed to be lived in fear. In my bio there will be a link to those suffering from violence.
Review! One of my favourite reads on this topic ever. Highly recommended.
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
This story is a plot that is not focused on enough and only now in the 20th century has survivors got a platform to speak out, however many many still suffer in silence.
The author writes the subject matter in such a manner it allows us to share the pain the character experiences sensitively.
Lola is the main female protagonist in the story. She escapes a horrific absuive relationship and escapes to family friends and confides in her childhood friend Dean.
Dean is the male hero in the story and show the characterisitc of a geuine gentleman and how a real man behaves.
This is a very current topic and the author has presented it so well in this fictional story outlining options of support.
This story weaves through the trauma experienced at the hands of an absuive relationship, the process of recovery to a HEA.
I loved everything about the story. The plot, the charaters and how the author navigated such an important topic.
It is up there with Coleen Hoover's "It Ends with us".
I would say it could trigger people due to the matters discussed and the detail as a warning.
At first I thought it was going to be really long book when I first looked how many pages it had, but before I knew it I was half way through. The fact the book spreads more awareness and understanding about domestic violence makes me love it even more!! Definitely in the top 10!!!!!
Lola’s life is terrible since the passing of her parents until she is reunited with Dean, will Rick tear them apart to keep Lola to himself read this incredible story to find out
This story was so heartbreaking and beautiful x obviously it's a hard topic to read but I really felt connected to the characters and all the emotions 😢
