Sadie can perceive what others cannot. A rare and hazardous gift, it is one she would rather not possess, as its price is great suffering. There is a word used to describe her kind: Martyr.
Wandering the wastelands of a ruined Earth plagued by gangs and Cling—an affliction which shortens the human lifespan to a mere few decades—Sadie’s hope to find a slice of utopia fades.
When an act of desperation in a reckless moment sets her on the run from a vicious warlord, her flight leads to a mysterious boy who seems to hold the answers to Sadie’s salvation. If she will use her gift to help his community, he vows to share the location of a tunnel deep beneath the ground—a tunnel revealed to Sadie in a fever dream as the key to defeating her pursuers.
But when Sadie enters the tunnel, what she discovers plunges the boy’s community into unimaginable peril. Despite Sadie’s commitment to self-preservation, she cannot bring herself to abandon him and his people. Fortunately, Sadie has a few tricks up her sleeve—and an old acquaintance with a notorious set of skills who just may agree to join the fray.

Jeff Menapace has become one of my favorite authors and having read all of his books and short stories this year, I couldn’t wait for the release of Cling! This is his first book in the dystopian/post-apocalyptic genre and I believe it will become a favorite for all ages! Without giving too much away, the characters have survived “The Event” and have managed to create an environment in this new world where although they struggle, they work to sustain their community amid widespread sickness and lack of resources. It’s interesting, to me, where and how they live, and how/what they “farm” to feed everyone. Although it’s fiction, the story is pretty realistic compared to others in the genre. This story line and characters could easily become a new favorite series!
In a world destroyed by a supposed meteorite, many people survive living underground. They are called moles by the ones who still prefer to see the light of the sun. Sadie is one of these living outside. She has a special gift, which allows her to feel other people's thoughts and see places out of her reach. The downside of her gift is that it steals her health and energy. This is why people with this gift are called martyrs. They are often chased by warlords since this kind of gift can become very profitable. Sadie is found by a young boy, which was rescued some years before by the moles. Sadie will learn some hidden things from this boy's past, and also about a terrible danger for his community.
Being this a post-apocaliptic story I felt it was right up my alley. The story is very well written, and all ends are tied up nicely at the end. I missed some more development regarding world building. We know that there is a disease called cling that kills people and few survive beyond their thirties, and that there is something called clear which constitutes a powerful cure. That's it. We did not get any information about the disease's symptoms and its evolution. About clear, we know that it is found in some underground cavities and looks like sand. It would have been nice to get some details, like how it worked or how it was used to heal people. I guess we will get more information about both of these things in future books, since I understand that this is intended to be a series.
The characters are well built, but they are not very developed. I was bothered by the fact that the bad guys were simply evil and a bit caricaturesque. The good guys were a bit more developed and I grew fond of them. I understand that this book is just a mere presentation of this world and the characters. I am looking forward to future books.
I found the story quite entertaining and compelling. Menapace and Bravo knew how to build the intrigue about the tunnel found by the boy and how this could change things for them.
Gary Tiedemann did a wonderful job narrating this book. His diction is very clear and he interpreted characters well, changing the tone of his voice and delivering different accents. It was easy to tell the characters apart when in a conversation. Tiedemann also transmitted well the characters' emotions. The audio production was good too.
I received a free copy of this book in audio format from the narrator in exchange for an honest review.
This is my first time experiencing one of Jeff Menapace works, it appears he is better known for his horror genre books, so “Cling”, a part of the Cling Series, is a bit of a departure being a post-apocalyptic thriller. The book is co-authored by Kim Bravo and the Audible narration is done superbly by Gary Tiedemann. If you are a fan of Mr. Menapace horror books, you may find this one not as much to your liking as there were little horror elements. Although the book can be dark at times, is more focused a telling the story and backstory of the main characters developing the first in a series. It should be noted that the book does not contain any zombies (yet) as many assume them to be a part of a post-apocalyptic world. I have to give thanks to the authors for not including them. Imagine a blending of Mad Max, Waterworld (the good parts), and Defiance and you get just a glimmer of what you will experience in Cling. If you are looking for a well told story with characters you grow to know and enjoy, I think Cling may be a book you will want to pick up. Note this book is part of a series and the book ends rather open ended with a few plot lines left hanging. If this does not bother you, go and listen to Cling
The story opens in a way that immediately draws you in and keeps you engaged until the end. I do not mean to say that it is all action with no substance, not at all. The book has a good balance of character and world development along with some points of intense action. The characters themselves had a good amount of interaction, humor, and banter between one another making them more life-like. I would assume growing up in such a world would make someone more like that. I have to give the author and co-author credit for going outside their comfort zone to write a book that might not appeal to their current readers, but it brings in a whole new type of reader to discover their works. I felt they did an exceptional job being this is their entry in to writing a post-apocalyptic thriller.
With that said, I will add that there are many of the standard tropes one would expect in this genre of book, but the authors also included some more unique concepts that helped me to enjoy the book and keep it interesting even more than I initially expected. I felt the world created was believable, however I would have like to have had more sections devoted to learning the backstory of how, when, why, and where the characters were in this environment. I think this would have helped me to better relate to them and their situations. I hope this will be a bigger portion of future books in the series. Even though I would have like to have had more backstory, the authors did a good job of describing the scenes along with any action so I could imagine them in my head while listening. The dependency upon cricket for much of one’s protein was something I cringed every time I heard it, but it made me think more than once of the abundance of food and tastes we often take for granted in our daily lives. I found the reliance upon the relationships they created and built along with the unique special powers some of the characters possessed made the book all that more interesting.
For the parent or younger reader, be aware this book is more intended for older readers; in my opinion. There are places where vulgar words are sprinkled here and there. Not heavily used, but be aware you will come across them. There is also some crude adult humor and references or discussions around alcohol, drugs, and sex. These appear to mostly be used to describe the bleak and grim world the characters are a part of. Most if not all of these references could have been removed without impacting the book’s plots. Again, the above is not used as much as others book in the genre have done. If you are easily offended by any of the above, you may want to look elsewhere.
Let me say that I felt that Gary Tiedemann did an excellent job narrating this book. It comes as no surprise as he is a veteran narrator with over one-hundred book to his name; at the time of this review. His voice was rich and had a slight dark tone making the book all that more immersive. There were no issues with the audio and no noticeable artifacts such as swallowing, edits, or volume issues. Simply a clean and professionally produced work. This is my first time listening to this narrator and I would have to listen to more to give you a good idea of his overall work. I will say that after listening to this book, I will be looking at some of his others.
In summary, if you are one who likes well-crafted post-apocalyptic thrillers I recommend you pick up Cling. If you are a person who does not like having to wait for the next book in a series to be released or book that have opened-ended plot lines, I suggest you wait until at least one more in the series is available. I also felt the ending was a bit rushed compared to the time spent leading up to the climax, but this may be more because of how the second book in the series picks up. I overall enjoyed the book, and I think you will also.
Disclaimer: I was voluntarily provided this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator.
3.5 stars This was a pleasant surprise. I was looking forward to this book and was not disappointed at all. It's a very interesting, entertaining and enjoyable story. It did take me a chapter or two to really be pulled into the story but once I was it held my attention until the end. If you like post apocalyptic/dystopian books that don't have zombies, excessive amounts of violence or controlled society's this is worth a listen.
I really enjoyed that it's a stand alone story that doesn't leave you hanging. Although it does leave room for more stories set in this world. I would definitley listen to other books set in this world revolving around Sadie and Fin.
I was a little confused as to how the world became this way although there is a reference made to a meteor hitting earth. In my head I envisioned it as a kind of wild West/Mad Max post apocalyptic world. The "clear" and "cling" aspects could of used a bit more explanation.
Will seriously never look at crickets the same way again. I know people eat them all the time but for me it is seriously cringe worthy.
Great cast of well rounded characters. Even the members of Blue(bad guys) were well rounded. Really liked the fact that Sadie was a strong intelligent female character. She has to be to survive in this world. So many times a female character starts out strong then just shrivels up, that didn't happen here.
Gary Tiedemann did a great job with the narration as usual. Nice voice that is easy to listen to for long periods of time. Clearly spoken with a nice even pace. Really great character voices. You always knew who was speaking. He was able to bring the characters and story to life. Very enjoyable.
I was provided this free review copy audiobook at my request and voluntarily provided this review.
I quickly devoured this listen. The audiobook is fantastic! The atmosphere and the world created by this author is so mesmerizing that it quickly captured me and didn't let me go. The characters are well written and you can't help but root for them. One character in particular who I share a trait with you will learn to really like his personality and root for him for the entire book. There are so many interesting and spellbinding things in this book that I have no doubt you will love it. The authors descriptions and landscapes are very well written and descriptive so much so that you get caught up in the scene very quickly. I loved everything from the rival gangs to the saloon and card games. I also enjoyed the creative dishes and meals that the author creates. One thing I really really liked was how the author made note of some children being born after the event and having to learn about the previous world before the event. If that is not enough for you then aeration of this book is unbelievable. The narrator has a mysterious and spooky voice that only adds to the atmosphere created by the author. The voices he gives to differentiate between characters are also very well done. This is a very positive listening experience and hopefully the author will explore this new world a little bit more into some other works because even though this is a standalone novel I believe there is much more to this world and many untold stories within it. I was gifted this audio book from the narrator, author or publisher in exchange for an honest review from audiobook boom. This in no way affected my opinion of this book.
( Format : Audiobook ) ""Where I come from ..honour just gets you killed."" Cling is a strange mix of violence and tenderness. The surface dwelling population live in a desert Wasteland, facing a mix of juggling existence and staying safe from the gangs and their ruling war lords. But there are others, contemptuously known as moles, who live mostly in tunnels under the ground, existing on ingeneously conceived food items made of insects, farmed by these more gentle people. But illness is beginning to take hold. The moles need Clear. So they need a Martyr.
Sadie is a Martyr. But a silly slip up now makes her also on the Blue Warlord's hit list. She wants him dead. She's not the only one.
The listener is gently thrown into this new world by first meeting Sophie at a bar, but soon this complex habitat unfolds and new protagonists are introduced. It is well done, the alieness of the place slowly revealed as we experience it through the characters' eyes. It is a rich and interesting story, too. The narration by Gary Tiederman was excellent, helping bring to life the disperse peoples with individual voicings for each. Some nice character building is also reinforced with very plausible dialogue and there are surprises along the way, as much for the protagonists themselves as for the listener/reader.
A refreshing and unusual book which will stretch imaginations. My thanks to the rights holder for gifting me my copy of Cling, via Audiobook Boom. It is a world I will remember, along with the new slant on the word 'martyr.
An Interesting and Self-Contained Post-Apocalyptic Story
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why? I had never heard of this author before, but usually enjoy reading science fiction with a dystopian setting and would happily recommend it to any friends with a similar reading preference.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting? The overall quality of the world-building done by the authors was the strongest part of this book for me, the way they gave out information came across as happening quite organically, allowing the listener to draw a clear picture in their mind of the world and its issues.
The cast of this book were a little more mixed, some of them were easily interesting enough that you would be happy to read more about them in a subsequent novel, but others such as the main antagonist were rather more generic.
Have you listened to any of Gary Tiedemann’s other performances? How does this one compare? This was the first time I had heard anything narrated by Gary Tiedemann and I found his performance to be a positive one that enhanced the story.
Any additional comments? I was slightly surprised when I finished this book how neatly everything was tied up in the end, these days you very often get things being set up for a sequel, but this was a good self-contained novel, albeit in a well-realised world that I wouldn't be surprised to see the authors return to at a later date.
[Note - This audiobook was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.]
If I decided to write a review describing the apocalyptic happenings that led to the world depicted in this novel, it would read something like this: "an EVENT happened which caused most people to die of the 'sickness', or 'Cling', a never fully explained illness which prevents people from living for more than a few decades. In order to survive people need 'Clear', which is a...substance of some kind found on walls?" As you can see this hardly sounds like literary gold. However, to dismiss this book because of its lack of back story would be to do it a great disservice. The world-building in this book did not feel inferior or incomplete just because the specifics of how the world became the way it was were not spoon fed to the reader. It just didn't matter because even without that information, the communities and societies that I read about in Cling felt very real to me. Even the unexplained psychic/telepathic-combo powers of Martyrs within the story felt believable within the context. Needless to say however, the idea of using an excersize bike to power the playing of audiobooks is one post-apocalyptic rebuilding idea which I would happily patent right now as an excellent fitness plan!! I received a free copy of this book in audiobook form upon my request in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoy reading apocalyptic stories, but the more they get away from people as I know them, I lose interest. However, there were a few things I found fascinating. So I gather that whatever happened to earth, many people went underground to live. There are many tunnels. The group which is okay are Moles, makes sense for where they live. Their diet is made of insects. Evidently, they can make it tasty. One teenager was rescued when he was very young on the surface of earth. He has lost much of his vision. He can see if he looks sideways at what he wants to see. So there are factors which made this story unique and I believe there would be an audience for this.
I've read a few, if not all, of Jeff Menapace recently and found this tale far from the style I've grown accustomed to. That of course is down to the collaboration with Kim Bravo who I now want to read more of! It took me a couple of chapters to get deeply into this but once that ball got rolling it was unstoppable. A great post apocalyptic setting and some brilliant and unique characters, wild and exciting scenes beautifully written with perfect description. I for one would really like to read more of the adventures of these great characters, how about a series???
This is not your typical Post Apocalyptic thriller. It has elements of mystery and adventure that use many different elements of the genre as a background. It is very original and character driven. My one complaint was it was too short and ended too quickly. This would make a great series. Mr Menapace is one of the main reasons I get kindle unlimited from time to time and is worth reading. I truly hope he sees this review and considers going back to this world and these characters.
Dystopian, apocalyptic survival story with different kinds of communities represented. It would have been better to include a little more back story and understanding what the illness actually is and the cause. This was murky to me along with the event that unfolded that led to the downfall of society. A paragraph wasn't enough.
Good book with interesting twists. I enjoyed the various characters and the battle Was excellent. The way Tier defeated Hash was amazing for a blind person.
Enjoyed this book! Loved the characters and how they bonded together. Had a few twists and turns. And an unexpected hero. Kept me coming back for more. Highly recommend Cling!!
I didn't know what to think at first because of Cling being cowritten and a different genre, but Jeff Menapace nailed it once again! If you enjoy Ted Dekker or Mad Max, you will love Cling!
this was my second Jeff Menapace book (Wildlife) and WOW what a difference. I enjoyed this post apocalyptic read and the characters. This story had a great buildup and the ending didn't let me down. Jeff Menapace is a worthy author.
