Allworth Press, an imprint of Skyhorse Publishing, publishes a broad range of books on the visual and performing arts, with emphasis on the business of art. Our titles cover subjects such as graphic design, theater, branding, fine art, photography, interior design, writing, acting, film, how to start careers, business and legal forms, business practices, and more. While we don't aspire to publish a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are deeply committed to quality books that help creative professionals succeed and thrive. We often publish in areas overlooked by other publishers and welcome the author whose expertise can help our audience of readers.
This book was certainly illuminating. It's written as a how-to text for people starting out as book publicists, but i read it from the POV of a first-time novelist hoping to learn something about book publicity before i find myself in conversation with a publicist.
It's really great for getting a handle on all the different aspects of publicity campaigns--types of media, interviews, net presence, what various vocab terms mean, what author tours entail, what all that stuff costs, etc. I can't say it was a fun read--it was at times an intimidating read, in terms of seeing what's going to be expected of authors with new books out. And i gotta admit, there were a few elements of it in terms of pitch and spin that made me think, "wow, that's potentially going to make me feel icky." But, forewarned is forearmed, and having read this book, i definitely feel forewarned.
Written for the average do-it-yourself publisher but contains such great information on the whole book publicity industry, that it makes you realize that book PR firms are worth the money because you learn what they do for books. Now that I have read this book I would use a PR rep if I could afford it. If not, this tells you how to do it yourself.
