The ESL student academy was established in June, 2013, and is specifically designed for non-English speaking ESL students wanting to improve their English academic writing skills . The author and instructor is a qualified TESOL teacher working a prestigious university in Cambodia. The AWS ESL Student Academy was developed for his students; however, it is now available to ESL international students who study English as a second language . The AWS ESL Student Academy focuses on improving English academic writing mainly for undergraduate university entrance, but anyone who is interested in improving their written English skills can become members of the Academic Writing Skills ESL Student Academy.

The author Stephen E. Dew, is a veteran of 33 years in the Telecommunication Industry from Australia. He obtained an Associate Diploma in Engineering in 1997 and achieved several units towards a Graduate Certificate in Management by 2004.

After leaving the Telecommunications sector in 2008, he traveled SE Asia and settled in Cambodia, where he obtained TESOL qualifications in 2010, and a Graduate Diploma in Enterprise Applied Management in 2011. He now spends his time teaching TESOL English at a well renowned University in Phnom Penh.

Stephen is married and enjoys writing educational books for his ESL students under his own name. He is also an author of fiction fantasy under the pseudonym Mealea Mathews.

His achievements to date include the series "Academic Writing Skills" for ESL students. As Mealea Mathews, he is writing "The King's Throne", a fantasy adventure series.
