Sin du Jour #1-3

Sin du Jour: The First Course

Rate this book

Everyone loves a well-catered event, and the supernatural community is no exception. Enter Sin du Jour, the expert caterers to demons, goblins, faeries, and everything in between.

In their first month on the job Lena Tarr and Darren Vargas, the newest line chefs at the supernatural catering agency, have had to approximate angel meat, evade amorous lizards, and provide craft sacrifices for a Hollywood debut. Their coworkers have contended with zombified clowns, fought off the Easter Bunny's hit squad, and captured a golden fish for a goblin royal wedding. And as if their new jobs weren't weird enough, now they have to deal with a very personal transformation on the behalf of their mysterious employer. As if surviving as a New York City chef weren't hard enough.

This omnibus collects in a single edition the first three Sin du Jour Affairs, Envy of Angels, Lustlocked, and Pride's Spell, and the bonus short story “Small Wars”.

This series couldn't decide what it wanted to be. There were bits that aspired to high comedy and bits that tried to be horror. Sadly, it generally fell flat at both.

All in all, it was interesting worldbuilding with a collection of mostly flat characters in a handful of interesting situations. I'll probably pick up volume 2 eventually.

Very light weight commercial series with no moral or ethical development among the characters.

They got better

The second book was a bit abrupt. The third a little woohoo.
But, it is still an entertaining premise and getting to know the characters is fun.

Sin du Jour FTW!

Having the first three books of the Sin du jour series is a great way to to start. Im eager to read the remaining books, each story is very enjoyable and the continuity makes it great. Loved it. I totally recommend this books and the price is kind of a bargain you shouldn't miss.

Sin du Jour: The First Course is absolutely fucking awesome. It collects the first three novellas in the series. Each is fairly self-contained, akin to an episode of a TV series, but there's still a clear throughline connecting them all.

These books are filled with beautifully bizarre shit. Everything from cloaca nuggets to a cult of demonic Hollywood producers. The amazing thing is how many plates they spin at once. Not only are they filled with weird, dark humour and great action, but there are genuinely sincere moments. The characters are forced to confront their insecurities, to try and come to terms with their flaws, and the results are often messy and imperfect. And that's awesome.

I feel like saying anything else would spoil the books. Suffice to say this is a fantastic omnibus, so if you're interested in Sin du Jour but missed the novellas' individual releases, this is a great option.

If you like urban fantasy, dark humour, horny lizard people, or are even just a smidge intrigued by anything I've described, then I totally recommend reading Sin du Jour: The First Course.

This is an omnibus of the first three Sin du Jour novellas. I hadn't heard of them before, but I saw a review and the premise was so good... the main thrust is that Sin du Jour is a catering company for supernatural creatures; the first couple of books feature a demon treaty dinner and a goblin wedding, for example. Hijinks are happening all over the place and up everyone's wazoo, basically, and they read like the best kind of stoner daydream. The first was the strongest, and they definitely got a little bit weaker as the series progressed, but they were all funny and quite clever and gave me some ace ideas for if I ever get to play Mage again, and the author did an excellent job of making quite a large ensemble cast interesting and sympathetic. Would recommend if you need a bit of no-brain-required urban fantasy.

Honestly funny as... a good fun read

Well done sir, funny, crazy, chefs and the supply crew tear it up in a romp that actually made me laugh in a room all by myself.

A rollicking hilarious romp, got my hopes up regarding gay content but Lena is a delight and the rest of the SdJ team are amazingly well written.
