A Harvest of Bones (A Chintz 'n China Mystery, Book #4)
by Yasmine Galenorn
Reading this novel was a fun ride. The world of Emerald O'Brien is complicated. Divorced mother of two teen/preteen children, business woman, and witch, who is involved in a long-term love affair with a decade younger man, her life is a juggling act that is not always perfect. In this episode, Joe contracts to purchase the lot next door to Emerald's, and Emerald's cat, Samantha, goes missing. While clearing the lot of years of brambles, weeds, and overall neglect, they uncover the basement and foundation of a house. Unfortunately, they uncover not only the foundation, but a 50 year old mystery that needs solving, and no one but Emerald and her friends, Murray, White Deer, Joe, Jimbo, and Harlow can ferret out what happened, who it happened to, and why. And they need to do it before the end of her birthday, Halloween, which is just a couple of days away.
I rated this 4 star, rather than 5 star, because there were some things that I thought needed to be cleared up that weren't. In the course of the story, unfortunate events happen to two people close to Emerald and her children. Miranda's first teen crush and his parents are injured in a fire; his parents are critically injured. And Roy's new wife, takes their baby and leaves Roy. Also, Cinnamon's boyfriend and baby daddy, newly released from jail, has taken up with another woman and left Cinnamon and their children bereft. None of these really impact the storyline, unless, because of the paranormal things Emerald & company awaken in the empty lot, bad things are happening not so much to any of them, but to the people on the periphery of their lives. That was hinted at, but other than Kip falling out of a tree and breaking his arm searching for Samantha, nothing really bad happens to Emerald, her children, or the people closest to her. If it was because of what was uncovered, then that should have been more clearly explained. If not, and just another complication in Emerald's life, that wasn't clear, either.
The plotting and pacing was good. The action was interesting and exciting. The mystery was also interesting and exciting. The characters are all believable and relatable. There were a couple of proofing errors (one on page 1 for goodness sake), but otherwise the proofing was fine. The main issue was completed at the end of the story, so no cliffhanger ending.
I enjoyed this book very much and look forward to reading more in this series.
