Sean McGrath's account of his time in the United States is a vivid portrayal of youth culture in the 1990s. A Travelogue charts his experience during his college years, indulging in keg beer and bong hits, venturing into the night-world of bars and clubs. In Washington DC, he describes the off-beat cafes and live music joints on U Street, meanders along the cobblestone sidewalks in the historic quarter of Georgetown and drives down the broad avenues by the monuments lit up after dark. McGrath sets out with a friend on a road trip to Florida for spring break, taking to the highways, wheeling along the back roads of South Carolina, eating barbecue and grits at roadside diners, a rambling tour of the cultural landscape that has a strong hold on the imagination. Along the way, he encounters some memorable characters, drifters and blues musicians, club kids and metal heads. Journeying back to DC, he goes off-grid to visit an encampment of Rastas and revolutionaries.
