Erolyn Dunn wants you to stop whining and take your medicine, a red pill that only the Chosen survive. Ciphers begins slightly before the action in The Wandering , book II in the Departure Day post-apocalypse series, as the technological singularity is in full digital bloom, the holocaust nearly complete. The deadly pills have eliminated almost all of the population of the United States and the remainders fall into two those who did not take the pill and those who are seemingly immune. Erolyn swallowed her pill along with the rest of her family; one brother slipped into the afterlife, another named Zander faked taking his. The rest of the Dunn family survived to form the nucleus of the Chosen, guided by a super-human presence on a quest to find other survivors to bring them together for one final showdown for the future of humankind. But Zander is a quisling in their midst working to keep survivors from slipping into “third state,” as the Dunns call the great beyond.
The characters from The Wandering are now spread throughout North Cassum and Renner in North Carolina, Maren and Brandon in Vermont, many of the remainder of the Sooners in Arkansas. Ian is found beside the road in Oklahoma by the Dunn brothers and brought to their family home where he finally finds a use for his digital skills. After months of feeling useless with the Sooners he is now able to communicate with the Entity, the digital intelligence that guides the Chosen, and Ian must decide whether to help his former comrades or take revenge on them for abandoning him. Cassum and Renner see the new Latter Day Saints world order they were trying to build completely destroyed and take refuge with a hermit in the hills of West Virginia. Their reclusive host had contact with neither people nor technology and his farm appears to be invisible to the Entity. Their sanctuary, however, is short lived and the Dunns ultimately catch up with Renner while Cassum narrowly escapes to fight another day. In the future, Pokalura must pass one final test against the Outsiders as he and the Americans are reunited.
In Ciphers the diaspora is reassembled to Maren and Erolyn meet in a collision of femmes fatales , the Americans battle the Outsiders, the digital world enters a prizefight versus the analogue. Even peaks are at odds as the mountain with the eye faces off against the mountain of men in Vermont. Powers collide in the penultimate book of the adventure series.
