The Surface Beneath

Rate this book
Private investigator Jack Steele, a former naval officer, has made a mess of his life when he finds himself in dangerous waters after accepting the key to a safe deposit box from a dying FBI agent. Once the box is open, a dark secret held within for forty years is exposed in the pages of the secret journal of Marilyn Monroe, setting off a chain of events where each moment is more harrowing than the last. Directly in the crosshairs of the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security, and the world’s deadliest assassin, Steele finds himself in a deadly chase to find the truth behind the journal’s contents. In over his head, running out of time, with his chances of survival dwindling, what he decides to do next will determine his fate, the presidential aspirations of a prominent senator, and could bring down the very foundation of the US intelligence services.
Fraught with a moral complexity and depth of judgment, The Surface Beneath is first-rate, capable of provoking deep thought, fear, and anxiety with every turn of the page. Riveting and relentless, first-time author Dennis Quiles will draw you deep into Jack Steele, then propel you headlong toward the breathtaking climax. Taut and insistent, The Surface Beneath is fraught with moral ambiguity, is ethically complex, and carries with it a depth of vision often missing from top-notch thrillers.

I loved this book. I felt like I was watching a high quality Hollywood action movie in my head. The book needed some work around the edges with grammar and such but the story is soo captivating that I didn't even notice the editing mistakes. There are mysteries that keep us wondering like how did Marilyn Monroe really die. This book has an awesome story that includes problems we face everyday, making it more appealing and interesting. I can't wait to read his second book!!

This book is extraordinary story that kept me engaged with every page I turned. The book reveals a story about a journal that was written by Marilyn Monroe back in the fifties. Inadvertently forty years later a burned out PI finds the trail of the book which contents threaten the aspirations of a presidential candidate who is willing to kill for it. For those of us who love action and the adrenaline rush this is the right reading material to keep you at the edge of your seat. I highly recommend it.
