Years ago, bad things were done deep in the Oklahoma woods. The truth was buried. People were forgotten…
It is now the summer of 1980.
A government employee sends a confidential file and an eccentric group converges to validate the explosive allegations. Meanwhile, a spirited college kid arrives at his family’s land determined to make a fresh start, while an aging caretaker grapples with his ebbing memories and the truth of his past.
And someone, or something, is out there in the woods – a strange creature that communes with the living and the dead and enacts strict punishment upon any who trespass.
A.E. Mitchell is the author of three books: Entanglement, That Summer Apart and Bad Things Done. She writes horror suspense, supernatural thrillers, and slice of life with just a hint of the dysfunctional and disturbed thrown in.
**NO SPOILERS** I happily give this book a 5 star rating. Well written and well paced, this novel is a constant thriller - leaked government conspiracies, a rich background of ancient Japanese folklore and an eclectic cast of characters which are immediately captivating. This book shines a light on some of America's darkest secrets and begs us to all ask what we are willing to do to "look the other way" and hold onto our version of the American Dream. As with A.E. Mitchell's other books, this one is a brilliant mix of the supernatural and the everyday and is set in rural America. Mitchell introduces us to multifaceted characters that will in turn horrify and endear you. As someone who lives in rural America, I found the timing of this novel to be particularly poignant. It serves as both an entertaining book and a gentle reminder that we must face the ghosts of our past and rise above our fear to do what is right.
