"What's the use?" At times of frustration or disappointment, it is tempting to ask this question. You work and work to grow to Christian maturity, but you seem to get nowhere--repeating your mistakes, neglecting your commitments, losing your motivation. The original readers of Hebrews felt the same way Yet the writer of this New Testament letter cheers for them to stay on track and never quit, so they can reach the finish line by the power of Jesus Christ. As James Reapsome leads you through thirteen studies in Hebrews, he offers you--and all of today's faith-weary Christians--the encouragement you need to stay in the faith-race. This LifeGuide Bible Study in IVP's revised format features questions for starting group discussions and for meeting God in personal reflection, as well as a new "Now or Later" section following each session to help you act on what you learn.

The idea of equating faith to a race is interesting, and it is mentioned once in the book of Hebrews. It was a bit of a stretch here, or it's possible that I just didn't grasp the study's intent. I did grasp, however, the beauty of the new covenant to replace the old covenant of sacrifices regularly for the sin of man. The new covenant of Jesus as the last and final sacrifice is a beauty beyond compare. Keeping our faith in Jesus is imperative to the Christian life, and Hebrews spells out many of the obstacles that Christians face, like the love of money, sexual sin outside of marriage, leaders who lead out of grief and not joy. It was worth the time. I like any study that takes what the scripture says and leads me to apply it to my current life. Studying scripture for the sake of head knowledge isn't enough, nor should it be. Scripture is a guidebook for holy living, and I want to get all I can. This study helped.
