Breg is the son of farmers, living an ordinary life on the border of the Keldorian empire. His family begins to fall apart when Breg lets his temper get the better of him, and his older brother ends up in a coma. Matters are complicated even further by the arrival of a mysterious stranger. A Raven. Breg’s life is thrown into chaos when his parents are murdered by a band of roving bandits. His only option is to follow the Raven into the Wildland, a harsh, untamed area, inhabited by creatures only known in legend.
Breg’s new caretaker, Glendrig the Raven, isn’t an easy traveling companion. And Breg is forced to dig deep to find the courage and strength to deal with the constant danger. But the events happening around him are connected to a much deeper and sinister plot, one that could see the whole of Keldor burned. If Breg remains uninvolved, he might live out the rest of his life peacefully, removed from the horrors of the conflict. But he knows he can only wait so long before the danger not only finds him, but his new friends.
It's pretty obvious the author is new to this. The writing in the beginning just is not very good. A bit wordy and maybe he was just trying to hard. However it does improve a whole bunch. The writing paint breg as a lot younger than 14 imo, and is not very enjoyable to read. The story is good even if it appears to be a classic trope of fantasy. Matter of fact there are so many cliche tropes that the author is able to surprise you by going completely the opposite way on one, so good for him resisting there. All in all its a nice quick read with a pretty good story. I will be reading the next one.
What an amazing book. I am really excited to read the sequel. I did not see some of the twists coming toward the end at all. Bravo, bravo. Well done. I would love to see this take on other forms like a graphic novel, audio book or movie. I legit had the chills at the end. Thank you for writing this book.
The last quarter was the most enjoyable. Though for most of the book I found myself annoyed with the protagonist, I will read the following book(s) to see where the story goes.
I couldn't even finish reading this. It was so boring. There are missing words and punctuation. I got to about 3/4 of it and nothing had happened. The characters are plain and uninteresting. I think about 50% of this book could be cut out and it would be better for it. It has a completely unexplained and non-sensical 4 year elipse where apparently nothing happens, even though they are in the middle of a conquest. Characters are introduced, at length, only to be killed easily and stupidly. I won't be reading the rest of the series, obviously.
I read a lot of fantasy in all the different genres, and "The Last Raven" is the best fantasy/dark fantasy novel of 2016 that I've read!! Mr Erickson....you the man! I can hardly wait for the next book in the series. A surprisingly good book....nuff said! All you unbelievers can scroll up and check it out for yourselves. I truly most highly recommend this awesome book!
Is it perfectly strung together as a story? Not really. Does the story stumble? Quiet a bit. But somehow it's really good the fact that the characters feel like real people. That you really don't know where the story is going. It's unpolished sure but this book is GOOD.
Make it past the overly cheesy opening prequel and the story begins to shine. A young boy journeys to manhood; you may have heard similar stories, but few compare to this gem. I cried towards the end.
