“I never fall apart, because I never fall together.”
So I read Catherine Ingram’s This is Pollock and This is Dali, and now This is Andy Warhol, all board books for adults as a way to introduce the artist to a general audience. All three of those artists were difficult, outrageous, controversial, offensive to many, and Ingram doesn’t sugar-coat any of that. She doesn’t make claims for them as saints or geniuses. This one is illustrated in fun and funny and seriously interesting ways by Andrew Rae, who also did the Dali book in somewhat similar ways (hey, Warhol made a film about Dali, and they hung out with each other, so now I think of them as this crazy pair).
The Ingram/Rae pair, as with many of us, does seem to be entertained by Warhol, the iconic Pop artist, who did not unlike Dali claim to be a genius, and presenting himself in this way:
"If you want to know all about Andy Warhol, just look at the surface of my paintings, and there I am. There's nothing behind it."
And even more directly: “I am a deeply superficial person.” So, there’s that!
Warhol loved money, he loved Hollywood and famous people and pop culture and he liked to create Happenings at his Factory. That word, “factory,” also points out a basic working-class dimension to him that a lot of people might ignore because of the party veneer: Warhol worked very hard to make art, and was remarkably productive. His approach to art was remarkably roll-up-your-sleeves work:
“Don't think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it's good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they are deciding, make even more art.”
But, you ask, wasn’t it really just a scam for Warhol? Wasn’t he just laughing at us all the way to the bank? Well, he might agree, actually, if you can take anything he says really seriously:
“Art is what you can get away with.”
Other famous Warhol quotes (hey, the guy was never boring):
“People sometimes say that the way things happen in the movies is unreal, but actually, it's the way things happen to you in life that's unreal. The movies make emotions look strong and real, whereas when things really do happen to you, it's like you're watching television -- you don't feel anything.”
“I'm not afraid to die; I just don't want to be there when it happens.”
“In the future, everybody will be world famous for fifteen minutes.”

Книжка в стилі коміксів та інфографік, де картинки такі самі важливі як текст - однак попри це досить інформативна. Йдеться не так про біографію Воргола, як про контекст його творів і розвиток творчих ідей, що мені допомогло глянути на них в інший спосіб (портрет Мерилін Монро, виявляється, був створений після її смерті і має в собі трагічний підтекст і т.д.)
Приємно тримати в руках і почитувати та розглядати картинки за кавою/чаєм.

Лаконічний і добре написаний текст і фантастично гарне оформлення. Справжнє задоволення на 1-2 вечори. Тепер хочу прочитати всі книжки серії!

Belle entrée en matière pour toute personne qui souhaite découvrir cet artiste. Les illustrations sont jolies, la présentation soignée. J'ai beaucoup aimé. Je lirai assurément les autres titres de cette collection!

"Хочете знати все про Енді Воргола - просто гляньте на поверхню моїх робіт, моїх фільмів, мене самого: це і є я. За цим більше нічого не стоїть", - говорить Енді на початку книжки Кетрін Інгрем і цю фразу, повірте мені, варто запам'ятати і витягувати щоразу, коли вам здасться, що за тією чи іншою роботою Воргола криється щось містично глибинне і непоясненне: Енді ні разу не додавав зайвого змісту - він просто показував все, як воно є і покладався на бачення глядачів. Обмеженість останнього чи, навпаки, його широта - не заслуга Воргола, а наша з вами і найкраще, що можна зробити, дивлячись на ту ж диско-Мерилін, бляшанку супу чи срібні хмарки посеред кімнати - enjoy it!
Мені, як людині, яка до знайомства з Ворголом, знала буквально дві його роботи (власне Монро і "Кемпбелл"), було дуже цікаво розбиратися у біографії, не перенасиченій зайвими фактами.
Інгрем "сортує" інформацію: ось дитинство Енді, коли він, дитина імігрантів з Лемківщини (не України, теперішня Словакія, NB!), хворобливий і зацькований у школі, перемальовує плакати, завішує стіни постерами і зачудовується рекламою піттсбургського супермаркету на Різдво;
ось Енді, який робить перші кроки у школі мистецтв - нелегкі, бо на третій рік навчання матір так образиться на Воргола, що не оплатить йому курс і хлопцю доведеться складати цент до цента, щоб повернутися в клас (зате наступного року Енді заробить 70 тисяч доларів - непоганий прорив, еге ж?)
ось Енді, якого засліплює слава і це, не забуваймо, буремні 60-ті: секс, наркотики, психоделічний поп-арт. У Воргола своя "Срібна Фабрика", де ніхто не обмежує себе в діях (як Дороті з пістолетом - цілилася у Воргола, але в останню мить випустила чотири кулі у портрет Монро);
ось Енді, який оточує себе зірками, позерами, 25-ма котами і в одну мить вирішує позбутися напускної величі, закривши "Фабрику" та перейшовши в "Офіс" - бізнес - це наше все;
ось Енді, в якого стріляють (ох, Валері Соланас!) і з цього моменту - привіт, обличчя смерті. Як тебе не боятись, як від тебе втекти?
Поп-арт - або вподобати, або відвернутись. Воргол не дає альтернативи: його роботи притягують, кольори - зачаровують. I think everybody should like everybody, - каже Енді. Пам'ятайте про це. Особливо, коли дивитеся на мистецтво:)

Обожнюю цю серію...коротко, цікаво та зі смаком. Ну і величезний + авторки, це поясненням тих чи інших робіт, що саме митець хотів сказати, донести іншим, однозначно спрощує життя читачеві/ глядачеві. Особисто я без цих пояснень і половини того не розумів би😂 Мистецтво воно таке😉

"This is Warhol" is a great quick read! All the photos of his work and illustrations make it fun. You learn a surprising amount about Andy Warhol's life and his work. If you are a fan of him or have a general interest in pop art I think you'll enjoy it. This is a quick read though so if you're looking for an in depth biography you may want to look elsewhere.

I love the hot pink board cover design - really cool!
Other than that - meh.
I didn't dislike the book. I just wasn't impressed by it.
Tiny print one liners alone on a page, like "Andy often lied about his background." Tell me more! Which part? What were these lies?
I've been reading a large amount of biographies, and I guess I've gotten used to a chronological and thorough formula. I felt it didn't tell that much about his life or Andy as a person. I learned much more about him from the middle grade biography I read recently. And of course there's conflicting information about him everywhere, including the two biographies I've just read. Who's right? We'll probably never know, as Andy Warhol is said to be perhaps the most misunderstood and complex artist in history.
But there was a hodgepodge of interesting things to be found here.
My favorite thing about the book (besides the cool cover) were the pages containing his art - big and vivid, interesting choices.
It's a good intro to his art and a glimpse of his persona.
The kids biography explained so much more about how he worked his way to success and fame, the struggles and failures along the way.
Other than that - meh.

A rather shallow and superficial biography. Warhol would probably have been pleased. A nice and brief introduction to the artist and his work, but not much more than that. I spotted one factual error--Songs For Drella was not an album by The Velvet Underground, just Lou Reed and John Cale--which makes me worry that there may be more. There are better books about Andy and/or his work out there, but I suppose there are worse places to start.

Again, this series is great for an intro to the World’s great artist. Major oversight not mentioning Basquiat as a late creative partner of Warhol’s.

Bu seriden okuduğum ilk kitaptı ve şunu söyleyebilirim ki son olmayacak. Kitap bize Andy Warhol’un hayatını ve yaptıklarını anlatıyor. Bizi sıkmadan çok eğlenceli bir şekilde anlatmış hayatını ve bu eseri diğer sanat kitaplarından ayıran detay da bu. Renkli, canlı ve orijinal bir eserdi. Çok sevdim.

Воргол - яскрава і водночас дуже суперечлива особистість. Незаперечним є його вагомий внесок у розвиток сучасного мистецтва, проте художня цінність робіт цього митця є, як на мене, сумнівною. Те, що декларувалось, як іронія над поп-культурою і споживацьким суспільством, врешті-решт стало прикладом попси і комерції в мистецтві. Успіх Воргола - це в значній мірі результат вдалого (само)піару та грамотного арт-менеджменту, а його творчий спадок - це хайп, масовість, тиражування, псевдоінтелектуальність, що помножена на пафос і незначна частка справжнього мистецтва у залишку.
Щодо самої книги, то вона чудова - гарні ілюстрації, які приємно розглядати + трохи тексту, аби мати можливість висловити свою профанну думку про видатних представників світового мистецтва (ги-ги).
Обов'язково буду продовжувати знайомитись із цією серією далі.

ой це було чудово! читається дуже швидко. якість книги та ілюстрацій топ.
було цікаво розпочати знайомство з такою людиною, свого часу він призвів фурор дуже простими картинами, які для кожного були знайомі з пляшками.
неочікувано було дізнатись, що він був знайом з Далі, Монро та Кляйн.

December 18, 2016This is due at the library, so I'm not finishing it, though I don't know that I would have made it all the way through anyways. I just had a really good tour of the Warhol museum and lecture about his life, so this now feels superfluous.
Also, I don't love the illustrations and the print is SO TINY.

I read the other book in this same series ("This is Dali") and this one was pretty similar in style and concept. It's basically an account of Andy Warhol's life from birth to death, detailing his rise to fame and fortune, with accompanying cartoon-like illustrations. This title though, wasn't as detailed as the Dali one; there seemed to be chunks missing in the timeline, and it didn't adequately explain how Warhol got as rich as he did. Still, this is a very enjoyable series - I like how the biographies are presented, and the illustrations are really vibrant and fun, and make the reading a lot more enjoyable.

Попитала в гугла та з’ясувала, що ця мальовнича довідкова серія про художників налічує майже 20 книг, й аж руки зачухалися мати їх усі! Українською перекладено поки що дві, тож лишається чекати.
А поки що розкажу про вже прочитані. Власне, про них я вже досить емоційно розказала тиждень тому, коли писала про "Це Далі", бо ж говорила в основному про оформлення, ілюстрації та друк, а це стосується кожної з книг. Однак тоді, захоплюючись картинками, я мало зважала на особу митця. Цього разу придивилася безпосередньо до Воргола, й ой які неоднозначні думки він викликав!
Можете мене затюкати й закидати капцями, звісно, але я не розумію ну ніяк отого захоплення відверто асоціальними типами й ліплення з них кумирів. Навіть така коротка, я навіть сказала б, схематична біографія Воргола не викликала у мене навіть частки отого "вау!", яким супроводжують згадки про нього. Хіба що одному хотіла б повчитися: перетворювати на гроші усе, навіть відвертий мотлох. Так-так, я геть не тямлю на сучасному мистецтві))) Дохлі корови, мухи, брудні бляшанки й купи лайна — то не те, за споглядання чого я готова платити гроші. І навіть пляшками з-під кока-коли, хужодньо розставленими в кутку, мене не звабити. І червоний диван, на якому валялися голими дупами п’яні наркомани на роликах, я й даремно не взяла б — про купівлю з аукціону за самашечі гроші вже мовчу)))
Однак книга цікава — я ж не про неї розмірковувала вище, ви ж зрозуміли)))

amazing book. i didn't expect anything new, because i've been interested in Warhol’s work for a long time and know his biography, but the way everything is described here, with surprising emotional intensity it's told, makes a very interesting reading experience.
i divided the book into three periods: Andy before the factory, "Factory!", Warhol after the factory and the assassination attempt. childhood and young adult time still gives a taste of shyness, so skillfully hidden (or lost?) in the second period. and the third period already gives a taste of death, which so often reminds us of itself here, and also reminds me of one of my favorite plots of all-time - The Great Gatsby.
Andy was kinda controversial person, although he absolutely changed the vector of development of many types of art. i am grateful to Andy Warhol for his influence on the world and my perception of art and myself as a person.

"Це Воргол" не біографія чи книга з репродукціями, це просто стильний альбом, з крутою інфографікою і вибраною інформацією. Такий формат у ХХІ столітті буде набувати щораз більшої популярності. Все зроблено на вищому рівні, естети будуть у захваті, а дизайнери просто захочуть мати цю книгу-альбом у себе вдома. Заради колекції і надзвичайних ілюстрацій. Трішки сумніваюсь у довговічності обкладинки, зате сторінки дійсно приємно листати.
До слова не можу сказати, що почерпнула для себе багато нового, адже життєвим шляхом Енді-Андрія Ворхола я цікавлюсь постійно. (В силу своєї професії і того, що він був українцем).
Рекомендовано для любителів мистецтва і колекціонерів сучасних якісних книг.

Two works of his I admire, one I wish to replicate, “Ethel Scull 36 times” 1963, synthetic polymer paint and silkscreen ink on canvas. Andy captured Ethel “alive” and “living.”
His other work, “Little Electric Chair”, 1965, synthetic polymer paint and silkscreen ink on canvas, would make a deeply profound art installation.
Perfect, short volume with illustrations to get a deeper look into the Factory, the people, the eras, and into self-created Pop Art himself, Andy.

Це перша книга даної серії з якою я познайомилась і точно буду продовжувати. Зберу усю колекцію відомих митців. Сподобалась якість самої книги, класні ілюстрації, фото, дизайн. Інформація подається просто, стисло але мені вистачило і було цікаво, бо про Воргола до цього зовсім нічого не знала. Лишилась в захваті.

i got this book at a value price and am overwhelmed at what a great find it is. the pictures were amazing. it gives both generalities and insights. it is cleverly and personably done in layout; this all comprises to a great artpiece. i was thoroughly impressed, and it is not at all lengthy and very concise. impeccably done!

Нереально гарна книга. Кмітливі і цікаві ілюстрації з дрібними деталями. Щира розповідь про Енді. Тихий хлопчик в порожній церкві, а насправді художник, що зробив мистецтво комерційним, створив свій стиль і як капсула часу зберіг той час для нас. Воргол чудовий.

«поп-Америка — це і є Америка». Мистецтво навколо. Ця думка йде з робіт Воргола. А найкращою його роботою є він сам. Книга трохи привідкриває світ художника, дає змогу побачити, що насправді ховається під лиском його робіт.

Terribly executed. Presumptuous contexts throughout with unnecessary illustrations - more of Warhol’s work could have been featured. 2/5 - only for the actual artists art and aesthetically pleasing cover.

This is another fantastic art biography in the “This is” series. I feel like I “get” what Warhol in particular and pop art in general was trying to accomplish through Ingram’s analysis of his life juxtaposed with images of his art and the movement of which he was a part.

The book provides us with a succint but interesting view on Andy Warhol's personality, work and life. I would love to know more about his youth and what led him to do what he was meant to do later. Still it is a highly recommended book as it inspires ones to learn more about pop art.
