Until the End of Time
Being a gay man in eighteen twenty-seven, England was not only frowned upon but punishable by death. Magistrate Simon Stockley would know. He’d convicted men in his courtroom and sentenced them himself. Every time, it left a vile taste in his mouth because Simon was no different than the men whose lives he claimed.
Overcompensating for his secret, fearing discovery, Simon walked the straight and narrow with everything he did. Being overly cautious with life was second nature to him. The consequences of being discovered were among his worst fears. Sadly, this was his life and he accepted it.

This is exactly the type of historical story that would have really upset me before...before I had a deeper understanding and patience for a time period that wasn't always forgiving.
Before I had a chance to appreciate the unspoken words and meaningful touches. Before I held onto each tender moment and stolen heart. It was a harsh world and those willing to risk it all for their one true love get nothing but my respect and admiration.
We start with now but swiftly flashback to before and I held on tight for every step of the ride.
Every piece of history holds a story and I'm so glad I had the chance to discover what the cover was all about. I'm always drawn to pocket watches when we go antiquing and now, forevermore, I will think of Simon and James.

I am not cut out for books like this. I can't handle the overwhelming sadness and pain.
Even though the story does technically have a redemptive ending, it is not a HEA by any stretch of the imagination.
There is so much death, destruction, and hate in the world. I read romance to escape, not to get beaten down and trampled on.
If you consider Romeo and Juliet a love story, you may consider Until the End of Time one too.

”Until the end of time,” I quoted. I’d stared at the engraving my entire ride home.
“That’s how long I’ll love you, James.”
Oh, Gosh this was gooooood!
Well, reading about the gays in 1800s hurts so bad. But I love how it was portrayed in this one, with little pain and doses of love and sexiness everywhere. Books like this give me hope.
I enjoyed this one. The pacing, the theme and the plotline. It made me cry most time especially near the end. There were some parts that seemed like it was too short and too fast, but considering all the moments they shared, their connection makes perfect sense. It was perfectly written just as what I expected of Nicky James. I love the old-style descriptions and writing of the storytelling.
AND OH THE ANGST! It hurts 😭
Not only the storytelling was good, but I love the importance of the delivery of how fucked up the history was with the idea of homosexuality (and even now still). oh, how ANGRY and PAINFUL I was.
Love is the most humane feeling ever 😞😔 Let humans be humans. Let the gays be gay!

Interesting premise and start. Really boring and uncompelling characters. A judge decides to commit all kinds of crimes against his station to rescue and hold as a house servant in a secluded manner a guy he’s given orders to hang for the crime of buggery. No chemistry between the 2 at 1/3 of the way thru. I don’t like James OR Simon much at all. Just bc Simon “fell in love at first sight” when he saw the gorgeous James... the whole thing is unbelievable and kinda stupid.
After some good reads by this author I’m really disappointed.

I love historical mm romance.
I also love Nicky James's writing.
So this book was bound to be a winner, and it truly was!
Such a well written (but what else to expect?!), well researched story about two men falling in love in a time when that could end bad. Like a prison sentence or even a death penalty. It's hard to imagine how life for homosexual men at that time must have been. Not being able to openly love the person you are in love with, jeopardizing your own life and that of your lover.
When Simon sets his eyes on James for the very first time, something happens to him. And even if he doesn't fully understand his own actions, he just knows he has to save him from the gallows or from being transported to the colony of Australia. So that's what he does. At first James doesn't trust his reasons and it was lovely to watch how both men grew to understand each other, trust the other one. Watch how that understanding grew into more, even when there was a lot at stake. Not only for James, but also for Simon, who's uncle has a high position with influences and whose life purpose only seems to be to rule Simon's life.
James and Simon were a match made in heaven. They were so good together - adorable and sweet and I loved how James opened up to Simon and vice versa and how their love grew into something that was for always. A forever together, no matter what. And even though Simon felt an instant connection with James, this never felt like insta-love, because James kept Simon at a distance at first. Until he knew why Simon did what he did, what drove him to risk everything he knew to save him.
One of my favorite Nicky James books and I highly recommend it if you, like me, swoon over a well written historical, with lovable characters. Due to the time period this story takes place, and because it's a Nicky James book, you can imagine the angst. I couldn't put it down.
Highly recommended.

I know and love Nicky James for her beautiful and nuanced contemporary books, Love Me Whole, Rocky Mountain Refuge etc. and this was the first time I've had the chance to read one of her historical novels.
Despite an unusual premise bordering on abusive behaviour that I won't spoil here, the story between magistrate Simon Stockley and cotton mill labourer James Hansen is intense and well developed.
Both characters are nicely rounded and distinctive in their personality traits. Simon, despite his position of authority, is an anxious and insecure man capable in extreme circumstances to accomplish bold actions. His narrative arch becomes more and more emotional as the story proceeds and a couple of chapters towards the end are really intense and disturbing.
James, who is, in turn, more decisive and steadfast, goes from being a victim of circumstances to becoming Simon's only source of resilience and strength. I truly liked him, but perhaps at times, he lacks an extra bit of personality and appears to come to life only through Simon's eyes and words.
The secondary characters, from Lillian - only apparently meek and passive - to Simon's uncle - who goes from being an overbearing but seemingly affectionate relative to a feuilleton villain - are all nicely portrayed.
There are, however, a few things that don't convince me entirely. The first one is that I cannot see the reason behind the Prologue and Epilogue set in the present (accompanied by a slight nudge to supernatural occurrences that appears right at the very end of the story). The main narrative is solid enough to stand on its own feet without any bracketing and I've found the contemporary characters rather annoying. The point made by the author with her story of everlasting love is strong enough as it is and I think that these parts detract rather than adding to the story.
The second plot detail that doesn't really convince me is the (mis)handling of James' papers and how they end up triggering the most dramatic part of the novel.
The writing style is, as always with James' books, quite beautiful, but there are a few inaccuracies in the French lines of dialogue: in the lines spoken by the deckhand on the ship a couple of verbs were not conjugated properly. My French, just like Simon's, is a bit rusty, so please, feel free to correct me if I'm way off the mark.
Overall, I'd give this novel a solid 3.5-star rating. There were things I truly adored and others that left me a bit perplexed. It is, however, a very intriguing historical novel, well worth a read.

This rambling is a huge spoiler.
I have mixed feelings about this book. It gave me some major bouts of anxiety to the point that I had to put the book aside several times to go do other things. I absolutely adored Simon and James. They were truly meant to be together. Unfortunately, in the time that they are living, homosexuality is considered a heinous crime in England. I loved the way their relationship evolved and wasn’t just thrown at us. Time passed, James was adjusting to his new position as male servant, their bond grew.
The part that gave me major anxiety was Simon’s uncle. He wasn’t in the story very much, but there was always this looming dread of what he would do to hurt Simon and James. It was a constant hum of anxiety for me. Then Simon is arrested for freeing James at the docks when he was to be sent to the colonies as his sentence for buggery. I saw that coming, knew it was inevitable. I get that. The end of chapter 12 and all of chapter 13 were so tense for me, I almost couldn’t breathe. I really felt like Simon’s punishment was too extreme. I get it, it was supposed to be extreme to show how his uncle had such a huge reach with the judges, but I was screaming as much as Simon was. My husband sure got an earful he wasn’t expecting as he sat so innocently beside me. I felt punched in the gut.
Then, after the ridiculous amount of time was served and Simon was released, I wanted to enjoy Simon and James’ reunion a little bit. Their separation may have only lasted a few chapters, but it felt like an eternity to me and Simon. I wanted to see them return to Simon’s manor and really start their life. Instead, it just ended right there. It felt too abrupt.
So, excellent story, but too much anxiety to be a 5 star read for me. Most readers love that amount of angst, I just had a hard time with it. Nicky James is a fabulous author and I do recommend all of her books.

This novel is quite unlike any Victorian MM book I've read before. It focuses on two men of different circumstances and a chance meeting between them turning their lives upside down. It is more about romance and emotional connection between Simon and James, the intimate knowledge of their thoughts.
It's very heart felt and at times tear inducing. I loved Simon and his stoic nature. James was witty and funny. Those two were so different but together it was like lock and key. The just worked both physically and emotionally. The moment their life together was discovered I was so scared for their fate but help came from unexpected source and I am glad it worked out for them in the end. Although I had my doubts.
It's hard to imagine a time when you could die because you loved someone you should not. This novel was not frivolous. The author really gave her point of view on what happened to those who were unconventional. The use of historical slang was a nice touch. The book was well researched and I enjoyed every small detail about possible everyday life of two gay men in Victorian era. Lets just say I am glad that times changed so much.

This book destroyed me ... and then, put me back together again.
Simon and James are complex, beautiful characters who have to battle great internal and external forces to find love together. Despite many barriers, they do succeed--but not without great peril and pain.
I was seriously sobbing my eyes out by the end of this book. Don't worry; it does have a happy ending. However, it's an emotional rollercoaster getting there, and I still haven't quite recovered. An intense, beautiful story about love overcoming all odds.

I'm rage-quitting this one because I feel deceived. This story is a master-slave 'romance' (there's apparently no HEA so it's not technically a romance, but I knew that going in). If I had known the relationship is a master-slave one, I wouldn't have touched this with a 10 foot pole. But the story does a really good job trying to pass itself off as not a master-slave romance. In fact, it seems the author never viewed this as a master-slave romance but it was impossible for me to view it as anything else. In addition, the master character is an arrogant, entitled POS and the 'romance' comes about when the slave character conveniently experiences a massive dose of Stockholm Syndrome.
WHAT THE HELL IS THIS STORY?!? I'm so confused. The actual premise was really interesting and I had high hopes for it. First of all, I think the situation would have been much better if Simon and James had connected prior to seeing each other in the courtroom because having a pre-established relationship between them would have made Simon's guilt and choices more angsty.
Second of all, the author refused to consider the third option that Simon and James had, which would have been the option that prevented this from being a non-consensual master slave dynamic. Namely - .

Beautiful
Until the End of Time , it's a beautiful written story that made me feel a whole range of emotions. I fell in love with Simon and James and their well deserved journey to happiness.

One thing for real - historical isn't my jam. Like at all. So I was more then curious to find out my relationship with this book. And let me tell you - IT WRECKED ME TO PIECES.
If there's an author who can write anything and I'll love it, that's Nicky James.
This book was so beautiful. Just to imagine that it could be real, that there were times when this happend to people who were gay (and to imagine that there are still countries which are the same :( ).
Simon was a really brave and strong character. He was nervous and careful, but brave too. And James *sigh* so cute and brave too. Both had patient and strength. And love. The love between these two was so amazing. I have no words. They were cute, lovely, and their story is heartbreakingly beautiful.
Those 5 years... sad but full with hope. Simon and James had hope in each other, and I had hope in Nicky for the HEA.
The ending was so good. I couldn't see, because the tears in my eyes... but so so good. This is what a real love story looks like. This is what love is. This is what endless love is.

For all my life, I would never forget the day I first looked into that man’s eyes. It was like staring upon heaven itself on a clear summer day and I could swear to you on my parents’ graves, the angels sang to me just then.

I can't believe I let this book sitting on my e-reader for THAT long!
I've been 'avoiding' to pick this book each time I want to start a new book. No, not because the blurb didn't 'intrigued' me, the fact is I KNOW that this book will be 'something'! So I keep waiting for 'the right' time to read it.
And last night, out of the blue, I just pick this book and start to read it with no hesitation.
I read it in one sit and once I start it...the book 'pulled me in' and I don't want to put it down...
The story was beautiful...
Starting with this newly marriage couple, Eric and Dylan on their honeymoon and stopped by to this historic mansion at Hastings.

The author then brought the reader to the forbidden love story between the young magistrate and this criminal who been accused in buggery.
Since Simon first laid his eyes to the criminal with pale blue eyes which stand before him in courtroom, he already knew, that this young man will 'ruined' him. But he can't denied the feels that make him hard to breathe. With all the risk, Simon then find a way to 'abducted' the young man from being sent to the colony or being hanged to death.
Simon then bring James to his mansion and make him stay there as his 'servant'.
But things was not that easy when James with his anger keep asking him 'the why'.
Not ready to give an explanations, Simon then let James flash his anger to him but make him understand that 'this is the only way to keep him safe'.
The story consumed me right from the start. The push and pull emotions between the two makes the story really hard to put down.
One thing that always 'frightened' me each time I read gay historical romance is the never ending questions "Will they get caught?". And we all know what will happen with gay men at that time when they get caught, right?
And like a mantra, the questions keep playing in my head, the tensions successfully put my heart beat faster almost the entire reading...
The book was beautifully written with slow pace, good plotting and the lovable characters that will stay linger in your heart forever...
Until the End of Time is a sadly-beautiful love story through the time that will warm your heart.
Did I cried? Oh hell yeah!!

At first, I felt this could not stand the time it would take to finish the book, but that changed once the feelings started to choke me up. It is difficult to comprehend the laws and punishments that were dulled out historically, and I am just grateful it is not that way anymore. Once Simon met James, he was immediately enamored and could not shake the feeling James was his world, and he needed to save him from the life he had just sentenced him to. So, Simon embarked on his own crime spree to make this happen. Once he had James, James of course was not happy, but soon they became companions then friends then lovers. Their love did stand the course time. I did feel a bit cheated at the end, as it was very quick, and I wanted more time with their HEA. Lillian was such a wonderful character and then on the flip side, Simon's uncle was the worst. I really enjoyed the narration by T. J. Ruddle and thought it was done very well. I would definitely recommend this book.

The most beautiful love story of all time.
I'm not a fan of historical romances, but somehow Nicky can write anything and I'd love it.
I loved reading this book and now with the audio it was a whole different experience. I loved listening to James and Simon's story, the voices were so great for both of them and the narrator did a really good job bringing this story to life.
Who doesn't love a love story which can last forever, no matter the time and place. A love story in a time when it was forbidden to love someone in the same gender as you. A love story which could easily be a tragedy.
I have only one word for this book: perfection. This story is so beautiful that it will stay with me forever, until the end of time.

Read this take of a beautiful but forbidden love.
Oh wow! Nicky James does it again. She knows how to write.
I was intrigued to read this period tale because the time was so cruel to people who loved outside the norm. It caught my attention immediately. Then it slowed, but stay with it. These men captured my heart. Their love was so beautiful but had to be kept secret. My emotions were deep causing tears. Read this beautiful story.

This story totally wreaked me, it is stunningly sad and grim, but an incredible tale. The lives of gay men back then was a minefield of danger, just for being in love. There was a kind of hea but only after years of torment and punishment that will leave you feeling wrung out.

4.5 stars. I didn't know Nicky James wrote historicals! I absolutely adored this book! I sincerely hope it won't be the author's last.
Plenty has been said in other reviews. I'll simply say that I loved this book because it was sweet and angsty (in a good way) and because it didn't shy away from the dangers of being LGBTQ at that time which made the story informative and riveting. I also loved the timeless message of love in the book and that spark of hope present in the end.
My only complaint is that I wish this story was longer. I would have loved to see more of their relationship develop in the story. Also, while I know James and Simon get their HEA, it would have been nice to experience more of it via an epilogue. In short, I'm just being a selfish reader who wants more, more, more! (why can't we chain Ms. James to her desk? Is that too much to ask?)

Beautifully done (an audio review)
I’m always hesitant to tackle historical gay romances. I mean, as this book so plainly lays out – the punishment was, if you were lucky, to be put on a ship to be a slave in the colonies and, if you were unlucky, death.
Simon is a magistrate who is due to join the judiciary. As a judge, he’ll be sentencing criminals – including men caught for buggery. Yet he knows that could just as easily be him. He’s gay. And although he has what he believes are secure ways to satisfy those urges, he has no safe way to express them.
Until he meets James. James whom he must sentence to death. James who makes his chest tighten. James who is the embodiment of everything he’s ever wanted in a man.
So how to proceed?
This is where the very talented Nicky James spins a beautiful tale of love, lies, and finding a way to live your true and authentic self. I had my doubts. But I knew she’d find a way to give me a happy ending.
I loved the book, and even managed to get through the tough places in one piece. This is a Nicky James – so there had to have at least a little angst.
Finally, I’ll address the narration. J.T. Ruddle was a gem to listen to and I’ll definitely pick up more books performed by him. Even if you’re afraid of angst, I recommend this book. I’m so glad I listened to it.

Honestly the reviews make it look like this is the most tragic Story on the market when really It‘s Not. This dosent even categorize as angsty in my book. Honestly people? I am so confused? I was ready with my big girl fighting gloves on only to be met with a cute little baby kitten. So for everyone else. This is 90% sweet freaking fluff. Honestly so sweet and wholesome. Then a little angsty kick towards the end but you never fear our mcs will get their very deserved happily ever after. Adorbss babyys.

Great characters especially Simon who you follow the story from his POV. A bit of drama involving Simon’s horrible uncle. Some really sad moments, but a well earned HEA. Lovely!

DNF. I made it about halfway, hoping that the story would make things right, that it’d get better. It didn’t on both accounts. I’m a bit pissed, if I am honest. Spoilers ahead:
Alright, so the premise sounds good, right? A judge, who’s hiding that he’s gay for obvious reasons, is forced to sentence a man to death because he got caught in the act of buggering another man. And so he (Simon) saves him (James) in a round about way that doesn’t get him caught as well. Which he does. But for ALL the wrong reasons. Simon did it because he “fell in love” at first sight. Which, okay, sure, whatever floats your boat. But it’s what happens when he gets James out of his fate: he doesn’t tell him what’s going on — rather, he tells him he’s going to be hanged, which is physiological torture — and takes him to his house …. And tells James that’s he’s going to be his servant. No choice. Oh, well, he does give him a “choice:” be his servant or go die by being hung. Which isn’t a choice at all. Simon takes the choice from him (James) by making him a servant. But he doesn’t do this for James’ sake, no, but to be around him and get to know him because Simon “loves” him. Does he offer to get him out of the city? Do help him get away to where he wants? Or something else? No. He makes the decision for James. And James is livid. Which yes!! He should be! But he doesn’t stay livid for long. No, he instead is mad for a bit and then accepts his fate. Which. If Simon loves James, wouldn’t he hate that James is miserable and feels like a slave? Hah! No, he finds it “amusing” and “adorable.” Fuck that. Simon also doesn’t say that James is secant for so-and-so years; there isn’t a time deadline where James can go about his own life. And James accepts that?!
I was hoping that this would get resolved. But it gets worse! It’s like Stockholm syndrome or something because they begin to have sex. And ugh! There is so much wrong. Some physiological torture at the beginning, not telling the truth about why he did it, forcing James to serve him, and dubious consent with it all. I’m done. Fucking hell. Simon loves James? Then why take away his free will?
Maybe it gets resolved later in the book. I don’t know, but I don’t think I care because I highly dislike how the main character is and is treating his “Love,” so no.

I have some issues
The book has some intense parts and the relationship between the main characters would be good if you could forget the whole premise. I think someone should have pointed all this out before publishing.
I mostly liked the characters but the premise is a miss for me. It’s basically a story in favor of Stockholm Syndrome. I’m not down with that. It’d be a good love story if one guy hadn’t stolen the other guy and basically held him prisoner in his home. Sure, he justifies it by saying he saved him from a death sentence, but really he’d already saved him from a death sentence by sentencing him to be shipped off to Australia as a slave. Would it be ok if a guy did that to a girl? No. It’s not ok this way either.
I’m also not convinced that being in jail for 5 years and not speaking would leave someone who was basically from the upper crust sane upon his release yet he recovers enough from malnutrition and psychological trauma in three weeks to go across the channel and find the other guy somewhere in France in just a couple days.
The book begins and ends in modern times with another gay couple touring the house of the main characters hundreds of years later. Why? All to prove it’s a love that lasted through the ages. I didn’t care about the modern people at all, or about their “discovery”. The whole thing would have been better if it was a reincarnation thing or time travel.
The writing is good but could have been better. If the judge had just told the prisoner why he did what he did it would have changed the whole thing. And you know what’s coming when the guy loses the papers, I mean c’mon.

This was my first historical MM romance and I absolutely loved James and Simon’s story. I was so riveted to their story and I didn’t want to put it down. It was so wonderfully emotional, and my heart ached for both men navigating being gay in a time when it was punishable by death. The love these two men shared was so poignant. I found myself reaching for tissues a couple of times while reading their story. It was such a wonderful read with characters that will stick with me for a long time to come.
