The information on gut health and how to detox was the main reason I checked out this book. The recipes were nothing special but we're in line with following Metsovas' Mediterranean lifestyle.
Packed full of information about the gut biome and how to reseed it with helpful bacteria from a healthful diet.
So, this book started with what most "health conscious/health topic specific" diet books start out with...the advice of the day and why you need to eat this way. The detox is what really turned me off. I would have given the book a lower rating, but where it got me was with the recipes.
Basically, the majority were clean eating recipes...which I loved. To me, it was the buy from local from farmers markets. I wouldn't say that is "Mediterranean" or "Wild". The main thing I walked away from this book with was the recipes.
So at first this book seamed like a great resource for my doctor prescribed Mediterranean Diet needs, but as I got deeper into it, I’m afraid this book was miss titled maybe due to current food trends. This book includes recipes w white rice, enriched pasta, and butter. They all look tasty, but not what Registered Dietitians count as part of this lifestyle. Also, much of the book is about detoxes including fasting, which I understand are not medically recommend for reasonably healthy folks. Beautiful photos, fun ingredients, but not a health guide for me.
I often wondered what truly made the Mediterranean diet so healthy, I can understand now into Chapter 2 of Wild Mediterranean that it's probably because this diet is good for gut health. What I love about the book is how many links were provided to studies throughout the chapters. I try to stay away from 'Google University' and like it when an author uses material to back their point of view. The only negative is that I wish there were more recipes!
I enjoyed reading the ideas behind this diet. It mixes well with some other books I am currently reading. Some good recipes, especially if you’re vegetarian. There are still a few good meat recipes. I totally agree with the supplement ideas in this book. Our diets are not ideal for our bodies and we need supplements in order to make up for the lack of variety and depleted soils.
This book has several items that are NOT a part of the Mediterranean diet. If this is the only book you read on the Mediterranean diet, you will be misled as to what the Mediterranean diet really is about.
We don't need restrictive fad diets to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Keep it simple with ingredients that are healthy, fresh, local and familiar. That's what I came away with after reading Wild Mediterranean. Ms. Metsovas a clinical nutritionist describes in an easy to comprehend fashion some of the latest research with regard to gut health, which in the last few years has shown up on the general publics' radar. Our microbiome, the bacteria that live in our gut, is a major player when it comes to our mental and physical well-being, and a gate-keeper for the prevention of many diseases. Her advice: follow a Mediterranean-style diet which research over the years has shown provides some of the best disease-free longevity benefits. Mediterranean cuisine focuses on fresh vegetables, fruits, lean meats and, to round it out, good old EVOO or extra-virgin olive oil. I really enjoyed reading Ms. Metsovas book which also includes recipes with easy-to-find ingredients and preparation, some of which I tried and were delicious. As Hippocrates said back in the 3rd century BC, "Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food." Enjoy! - Amy O.
Loved this book about what it takes to live the Mediterranean diet and lifestyle in the USA! Although I have not been to the Mediterranean yet, this book really established a heartfelt connection to the area. I'm also a retired athlete (soccer!) and really appreciated the author's background and insight into sports nutrition by her clean eating approach. Beautiful book cover and photographs throughout the book!
