Nothing Stays Buried

Rate this book
When Minneapolis homicide detectives Leo Magozzi and Gino Rolseth are called to a crime scene in a heavily wooded city park, everything about the setting is all too familiar. And when they discover a playing card on the victim's body, their worst fears are confirmed there s a serial killer operating in the city for the first time in years.

Across town, Grace MacBride and her unconventional partners at Monkeewrench Software find themselves at both personal and career crossroads. Weary of the darker side of their computer work for law enforcement, they agree to take on a private missing-persons case in a small farming community in southwestern Minnesota.

As the violence accelerates in Minneapolis, Magozzi and Gino soon realize their killer is planning to complete the deck, and they enlist Monkeewrench to help stop the rampage. As a baffling tangle of evidence accumulates, the cops and Monkeewrench make the unlikely connections among a farmer's missing daughter, a serial killer, and a decades-old stabbing that brings them face-to-face with pure evil.

This is one of the best in the Monkeewrench series set in Minnesota. All the characters return and there have been some changes. Leo is preparing for his and Grace's baby at his new rural home, Grace is becoming more mellow as her past trauma loosens its ties on her, and she is seriously becoming enamoured of potentially moving to a rural location. It begins with the animal loving Marla, in Cottonwood, discovering a dead body in a bag and is being chased into the woods. Her father, Walt, and Sheriff Jacob, who was sweet on her, want to know what happened to her, whilst fearing the worst. They have suffered through the years and looking for closure, call in Monkeewrench to investigate. The Monkeewrench team arrive at Walt's in Harley's beloved Chariot, determined to do their best.

MPD cops, Leo and Gino, are called to the scene of a woman gruesomely murdered whilst jogging in a park. Left on the body is a playing card, the 4 of spades. This connects with a similar murder of a woman where the ace of spades was left. Leo and Gino are pretty sure they have a serial killer on their hands, and think two other murders have taken place. Putting pressure on the police is the notoriously ambitious reporter, Amanda White. Cassie Miller is working undercover at Global Foods, suspected of links to Mexican drug cartels with fearsome enforcers. As the body count rises, it soon becomes apparent that the disappearance of Marla, the Parks serial killer and Cassie's mission are all interconnected. Gino and Leo chase the serial killer to Walt's home as one of the most malevolent tornado and storm hits the county wreaking carnage, and triggering a devastating mud slide which ensures that the past never stays buried.

This was a thrilling and atmospheric read that does a sterling job in reviving a series that i have to admit I love. I really enjoyed the character development with Grace MacBride in this one, her relationship with Leo is becoming more solid and she's really looking forward to the baby, despite the adjustments in her life that it will demand from her. I thought Walt was a terrific character, who despite his emotional pain, connects so well with Monkeewrench. As for the Lion running wild and the symbolism attached to his appearance, it somehow works well with the narrative. A fabulous read that I recommend highly.

3.5 On the one hand, I adore the characters. The two detectives Gino and Leo, and of course the formidable Monkey wrench crew, Roadrunner, Harley, Annie and Grace. All with extremely interesting back stories. In this one I also really appreciated the character of Walt, a farmer whose daughter is missing, bringing the crew in to try to find connections that the law cannot. Leo and Gino find themselves investigating a possible serial killer. So the cases were interesting and the story flowed well, the writing solid.

On the other hand, the Moonkeywrench crew and their talents were not really used nor displayed and this is usually one of my favorite parts of this series. The crew was on site, but really had next to no input. Rather disappointed by this. Also Grace, now quite pregnant was not her usual edgy self, though Annie and her high heels had a few amusing scenes. So while this was good it was not my favorite of the series and I hope in the next installment the crew has more of a role.

My sympathies to the remaining author of this well received series.

I've been riding with this here Monkeewrench gang since they left their hideout, oh wait, wrong genre. How about I've been a devotee of the Monkeewrench gang since they burst upon the literary scene in ...wait that is not quite right either. Okay final try. This is the eighth and very welcomed book in the Monkeewrench series. The Monkeewrench gang are four brilliant, damaged, and extremely tight computer mavens who have developed a software that is proving invaluable to law enforcement agencies.
There are two story lines, a search for a missing girl and a search for a serial killer, the first headed by the Monkeewrench Gang and the second headed by their Minneapolis homicide detective friends/lovers. These two hunts become intertwined to the surprise of everyone since one hunt is in the Minnesota cornfields and the other in the Twin Cities.
This might seem an odd complaint, but this book was mostly story. I would have liked to have spent more time with just the characters. A minor complaint as the stories are really intriguing. As are all of the Monkeewrench series, this is well-written and fast paced. The murders are not too graphic, but still disturbing. Especially when a bit unexpected. So close.....
This book can absolutely stand on its own, but just for the pleasure of meeting these characters I would suggest some of the earlier books.
I have to say Minnesota is producing some of my favorite mystery writers and settings, right after LA.
The Tracy team is spot on with their cartel information.
Oops, I had to go back and change the rating to five stars because one of the characters talks about making French toast by dipping it in melted vanilla ice cream.
There is a lion. Did I mention there is a lion living in the cornfields?
Thank you NetGalley for a chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

UPDATE: 08/08/23 - Loving the reread!

Another great addition to what may turn out to be one of my favourite series! Some grizzly murders have Monkeewrench and the MPD in another hunt for a card carrying serial killer.

A different P.J. Tracy emerges in this piece, primarily because one of the duo has passed on, leaving the legacy on the shoulders of the younger. It was also the first ‘book’ in the series I read, the others having been of the audio variety. After the daughter of a farmer goes missing, the local sheriff calls in a favour from Monkeewrench to help piece this all together. Grace MacBride, well into her pregnancy, is happy to oblige and the team makes their way into rural Minnesota to assist. One interesting clue found close to the scene is blood traced back to a member of a Mexican drug cartel. Meanwhile, in Minneapolis, Detective Leo Magozzi is pondering his recent move to the country and the fact that he will soon be a father. Alongside his partner, Gino Rolseth, they banter about anything that comes to mind, at least until a call comes in. It’s a body, slashed and dumped, but there’s also a playing card tucked inside the clothing. Could it be the killer that the MPD Homicide team has been hunting; a serial killer perhaps? When more bodies emerge, each with another playing card, Magozzi and Rolseth are baffled as to how they will solve this case. When the FBI sweeps in to take control of the case, both detectives are confused by the federal presence and unwilling to simply walk away. Meanwhile, Monkeewrench has been running some searches for Magozzi and found a few pieces of information that might tie-in to the case they have been working. Could the two be connected? With a story that moves from Minneapolis to a farming community, no one is safe with a killer on the loose and another one prowling the woods! Tracy, in whatever incarnation, is truly captivating in yet another novel and keeps the reader glued to the page well into the night. Recommended for series fans who love what they have read and are ready for a slightly different flavour in this piece.

I continue my summer reading binge of P.J. Tracy’s work, having been forced to pick up a book for the first time with this series. In their written form, the stories have not lost their momentum, even while I am forced to create accents and banter dialogue in my mind. This proves that Tracy’s work can transcend the audio medium and still come to life on the page. This novel is again able to mix great mystery with strong characters and deliver a knockout punch. The Magozzi/Rolseth banter remains strong and offsets some of the more gruesome aspects of the narrative. Of great interest in the realm of characters is how Magozzi and MacBride are each handling the pending parenthood that is surely just around the corner. Tracy offers the reader glimpses into both their psyches and permits some self-reflection on how things will change in the coming months (book or two?). I am eager to see this change in the next book, presuming there will be a birth before too long. The rest of the gang (both police and Monkeewrench) continue to dazzle and keep the reader on their toes for a variety of reasons. I was pleased to see a strong narrative and an interesting two-pronged story that neither dragged nor jumped without offering substantial progress. While P.J. Tracy commonly offers two cases, the reader is rarely left feeling unfulfilled during the gaze into the case’s progress. Using a constantly revolving group of characters, Tracy is able to push the narrative forward in interesting ways and never forces the reader to accept subpar writing or storytelling. These novels move away from the traditional police procedural and permit P.J. Tracy to entertain the reader with strong storylines, perfect for a vacation or summer binge. With one novel left (at this point) to read, I am beginning to face the reality that the binge is almost done, but I want more. Truly a sign of powerful writing!

Kudos, P.J. Tracy, for another wonderful piece. You have done your mother proud by keeping the story going. Write and think of her, always!

EXCERPT: Something horrible was going to happen to Marla. Somewhere down the road there had to be payback for her perfect childhood, her perfect career at the veterinary clinic, her perfect apartment in Minneapolis, her consistently perfect life. Friends who adored her envied her in equal measure, and secretly waited for the tragedy to come because they believed in the law of averages and the irrefutable balance of good and bad in every life. And also because, in the darkest moments of their own less than perfect lives, they just had to believe that some day Marla would get hers.

ABOUT 'NOTHING STAYS BURIED': When Minneapolis homicide detectives Leo Magozzi and Gino Rolseth are called to a crime scene in a heavily wooded city park, everything about the setting is all too familiar.

MY THOUGHTS: Nothing Stays Buried by mother/daughter writing team is #8 in a series of which I have read none of the previous books, but is easily able to be read as a stand-alone.

This was a crime/mystery/suspense read that kept me interested throughout. There is a strong mystery with the disappearance of a local farmer's daughter whose car is discovered working perfectly but abandoned by the side of the road. To make matters worse, there is a large pool of blood in the middle of the road but no sign of a body. One of the Monkeewrench team knows of the case and volunteers their help.

At the same time they are on the fringes of another case which may possibly be a serial killer.

The storylines are both strong ones but complement one another rather than there being a tradeoff of one against the other. The segue between the two stories is smooth and natural, the characters strongly depicted and believable.

⭐⭐⭐.5

In 2003 I picked up a book called “Monkeewrench” & was instantly hooked. Fourteen years later, nothing has changed. As usual there are multiple story lines that develop separately until evidence begins to weave them together.

Leo Magozzi & Gino Rolseth are homicide detectives with the Minneapolis PD. Which is a good thing because they’ve got a dead body on their hands. A young woman was found murdered in a park & unfortunately the distinctive MO is ringing a few bells. Several months ago another woman was found in a similar setting but the case was never solved. Before they can make much headway, the body count begins to rise. And things get even more complicated when FBI agents show up & aren’t keen to explain why.

Meanwhile, over at Monkeewrench, Harley is doing his best to talk the crew into taking a missing persons case. Sheriff Jacob Emmet arranged for him to meet Walt Gustafson, an old farmer whose daughter Marla disappeared without a trace 2 months ago. Harley figures it’s the perfect case. They’ll get to help some decent people while keeping the 6 months pregnant Grace away from the usual brand of bad guys they chase.

Every now & then we spend a chapter with the killer & it’s an uncomfortable experience. Slowly we realize there’s something fundamentally wrong with them, some glitch on a cellular level.

As both investigations progress, we catch up on the characters’ personal lives. Leo is over the moon about becoming a dad (despite Gino sharing his domestic horror stories) & continues to work on the lake house he bought. Grace has been softened by the pregnancy & is beginning to entertain the idea that not everyone wants to kill you.

There’s a subtle shift in tension & pace as information begins to trickle in & before they know it, they’re facing a cold killer, wild weather & a horrific discovery on Walt’s farm. Oh, and what’s the deal with the lion?

Earlier books were more focused on action & hi-tech toys as the characters, their backgrounds & relationships were established. This is a more character driven plot with emphasis on how the investigations affect their personal lives as the situation becomes increasingly dangerous.

I must confess that around book #6, I grew tired of Grace & Leo’s idiot dance as they continued to circle each other. Thankfully the old will-they-or-won’t-they situation was resolved but because the authors took their time, the evolution of Grace’s character is more believable. She’ll never be described as a hugger but the fact there’s a little Magozzi on the way makes it obvious she no longer sheaths herself in emotional (or physical) armour.

If like moi you have a book budget, sometimes it’s hard to decide where to spend your hard earned cash. No drama here, these are a no-brainer. The characters have become old friends & it remains one of my go-to series. These books were written by the mother/daughter team of PJ & Traci Lambrecht . Sadly, PJ passed away in Dec. 2016 but according to the website, Traci intends to carry on entertaining us with suitably snarly cases for the Monkeewrench crew to solve.

Another brilliant episode in this excellent series.

Nothing Stays Buried takes the Monkeewrench team on the road and when they travel they do it in style! Grace is now very pregnant and is becoming a tiny bit more laid back and just a little bit more touchy feely with Magozzi. The rest of the team are pretty much their normal selves. Annie in particular is still wearing her heels even in a cow field in Minnesota.

The story is divided pretty equally between the Monkeewrench case and Magozzi and Gino's case but it becomes apparent that the two sides are going to blend into one at the end. The author does this in style with rain, lightning and tornadoes and amazingly - a lion. Sounds odd but I can assure you it is not!

An excellent book and I hope there will be more despite the very sad loss of one of the authors.

descriptionPretty good cover on this one. I like how the title and authors name appear to be partially buried. Nice touch that. It does lose a star because the author's name is WAY too big IMO.description

descriptionSo wow was this a fantastic read. I'll admit right upfront that I haven't read any of the previous books in this series. That said this could be read fine as a standalone. Of course, I am sure that the relationships, etc. are more fully explored through the first seven books, but I never felt lost reading this one.

description

It was fabulously well written and paced. The plot was interesting. There were twists and turns. There were a TON of characters which I find sometimes can be confusing as the names start to all blend together. That was not the case in this book. I had no trouble keeping who was who straight. The book was very atmospheric and the descriptions of places and characters vivid. I especially was fond of Walt.

Honestly, I don't have much more to say about this one. I loved it and will for sure be going back to read the first seven books when time allows. Two HUGE thumbs up from yours truly.description

I've adored the Monkeewrench series from the beginning and this one is no exception. This one has everything from a serial killer to Mexican drug cartels to a random FBI operation and the pace doesn't let up from beginning to end. There are a few changes - Grace is 6 months pregnant and her & Magozzi are slowing building on their relationship and trust as they prepare for the new baby. There's a new secondary detective that seems to fit in quite well and seems very easy on the imaginative eyes. The rest of the old characters are back.

One of the things I have enjoyed from the beginning is the relationship between all the main characters. I love how the 6 main ones each have their own individual backstories loving created and that the stories can have all 6 and give equal book time. There is a lot of emphasis on the Sheriff and father of missing girl Marla as well as breaking in the new detective in this one so a lot of the characters take a back seat which while I understand and didn't take away anything from the plot did make me miss my main guys.

Overall great as always, I love the pace and structure. The writing as always spot on. Oh and I loved the rogue lion :) Looking forward to the next one

I really liked this one, perhaps it's my favorite of the series. It had a number of really likable characters in addition to the usual group. There was a good dose of the Monkeewrench group, who agreed to help a rural farmer, Walt, whose daughter went missing. He was an old-fashioned farmer who wasn't used to people like Monkeewrench, and it was interesting to see how they got to be close after a short time, even Annie with her inappropriate clothes, high heels, and disdain for country life in general. When a big storm was on the way, he worried that he might have to carry her from their motor home to the storm cellar, a feat that would take a lot out of an old man considering her ample size.

When detectives Leo Magozzi and Gino Rolseth discover that their case of a serial killer seems to be connected to the area of Walt's farm (partly due to the presence of lion's fur!), they decide to go out and join Monkeewrench there. Of course, they have to run into a huge storm along the way, and a discovery of dead bodies. Nothing's easy for these guys. But they don't complain - much. Well, not much considering how they complain about most everything.

This was one book I had trouble putting down. I'll be reading the next one soon that I got from Net Galley.

As previously mentioned, I received this as an ARC from Penguin.

This series just keeps getting better and better.

In this episode the action is mostly based in Minnesota. I won't say where the other places are, because I don't want to spoil anything. This mystery will put you on the edge of your seat.

I hope Number 9 comes out soon.

I've followed this series from the start and loved every one of them - I was extremely saddened to hear that PJ had passed away, but her legacy will live on through these novels as Grace, Leo et al will continue...

This one was a brilliantly addictive crime thriller which is exactly what I have come to expect from this series - whilst Grace and co head in country to try and track a missing girl, Gino has a serial killer on his hands - these two cases seemingly collide and the game is on once more.

The Monkeewrench books are really top notch and engaging stories within the crime genre - I'm not sure what I can say about them that won't come off a little cliche - but it is true that these are cleverly plotted, littered with intriguing and multi-layered characters and never ever even close to being dull. The set up is excellent, mixing tech with classic crime detection which is always a great way to twist up any mystery element - all in all a really excellent series that I hope continues on for many years to come. PJ's contribution will surely be missed but the voices are strong and are in good hands.

Recommended. Every one of them.

I am unsure about writing a review for this book. I have read this entire series and love the characters. I'm sure that I will continue to read this series but this edition was just a bit different.

Author PJ Tracy is a mother/daughter writing team who have done a great job together developing the Monkeewrench crew as well as Minneapolis detectives Leo Magozzi and Gino Rolseth. Sadly, PJ (Mom) passed away and this is the first book by Tracy (daughter) alone. It's a good story but the writing is different and so is some of the characters personality traits. It seems 'picky' of me to mention but I found it a bit distracting. I'm sure the series will continue and maybe this reader has to accept some minor changes.

My sincerest condolences on the loss of PJ.

I have been following this series since the release of the first book Monkeewrench. I am going to say why I like this series so much rather than do a synopsis of the plot which has already been written in other reviews.

The characters draw me to this series. Leo Magozzi and Gino Rolseth are Minneapolis Homicide detective partners. I have always liked their humor and their friendship as partners. Secondly, the Monkeewrench gang is a very diverse group of offbeat and highly intelligent characters. They care for each other and are a family unit. Their headquarters is on Summit Ave in St. Paul where all old and very grand beautiful homes are. The two sets -the detectives and the Monkeewrench Group-work together in the series.

I also like books that take place in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. I recognize many of the locations that are mentioned. They also cross the Mississippi at Hudson at times and work in rural Wisconsin too.

I enjoy going into the Minneapolis Police Department with Leo and Gino and meeting up again with their workmates. In this book, there were two investigations going on. One involved a serial killer and the other a missing young woman. A new character named Walt was central in this book and he was very likable. When people ask me to recommend a mystery to them, the Monkeewrench series is one of the ones that I always mention. I am looking forward to the next book.

What a fantastic eighth book in the Monkeewreench series. I feel each book keeps getting better and better. Having read the series from the start, I immediately felt as I started this book that l was back with some old friends. All the characters are back and a few interesting new characters are brought into this story. Hmm, is that a lion in the corn?
I was very saddened to read that PJ, mother in the mother/daughter writing team, passed away this past December. My thoughts go out to Traci and her family.

I have read all the books in the Monkeewrench series and this one doesn’t disappoint. This is the 8th book in the series but, can easily read as a standalone. The old team is back and Grace MacBride is pregnant with Leo Magozzi’s baby. They are both happy together and Leo has brought a house by the lake that Grace stays there a few days a week.
The team are assigned a missing persons case which a woman called Marla has disappeared for the last two months in the farming community In Minnesota and Detective Magozzi and Rolseth are investigating a serial killer who trademark is leaving playing cards when he kills the women. They soon discover after a while that both cases are linked by a Mexican drug cartel.
I really enjoyed this. I thought it was one of the best books in the series. It had everything you want in a crime novel it was suspenseful, it kept you engaged throughout, it was kind of creepy too when they described the character of the serial killer. The characters where well developed and I liked the relationship between Grace and Leo. I loved it. I highly recommend.
Thank you Netgalley and the Publisher for a copy of this book for an honest review.

Women are dying in parks around Minneapolis, viciously strangled and their bodies slashed with a sharp hunting knife. Meanwhile, Grace MacBride is five months pregnant with Leo Magozzi's baby and they are about as happy as they can allow themselves to be. Leo has bought a new house out in the country and much as she hates to admit it, Grace is content with her life and work. Monkeewrench is hired to travel out to Buttonwillow MN to search for a woman who has been missing for two months. No clues exist, but neither has her body turned up. As the two cases converge, Gino and Leo must work with the county sheriff and Monkeewrench to uncover how the cartels are moving more and more into life, both in the big cities and small towns across America. As always, the place setting is well-drawn and the characters remain true to themselves, even as they continue to grow. The death of one-half of the mother-daughter writing team has not impacted the storytelling at all.

Nice little serial killer mystery. The first I’ve read in this series. Kinda surprised that the Monkeewrench crew didn’t really have much of a role in the story. It seems that they were added to an existing storyline just to keep it as part of the series, but then again I have t read any of the others so…

*FOUR AND A HALF STARS*

In my opinion, if you like crime fiction then you will have heard of P.J. Tracy before. Their books feature the über intelligent crime fighting team, Monkeewrench, headed by the strong yet emotionally scarred superwoman that is Grace McBride. I LOVE these books and I have a particular soft spot for Grace, so I was thrilled to be asked to join the blog tour.

I was excited to make a start on Nothing Stays Buried. So much so I ended up walking across the Norfolk Broads while on holiday, trying to find a wi-fi signal so I could download the book! I eventually managed and threw myself straight into the story. And oh my, that prologue certainly grabs your attention! I had so many questions after that opening chapter that I wasn’t going to let grumpy, squabbling kids in the back of the car distract me (bad mummy!). I was hooked from the first page, from the moment Marla Gustafson was introduced to us. Marla is pretty perfect. So perfect, she wants to help others by removing dumped trash bags from the freeway. What she doesn’t expect is…well, you’ll have to read the book for yourself to find out but let’s just say that she immediately regrets stopping. Especially when she’s chased through the woods by a stranger (read: maniac!).

The Monkeewrench crew are drafted in by Jacob, the local Sheriff who has a romantic interest in the victim, and her desperate, elderly father, Walt. It’s not on the scale of their usual cases and they tend to come with a high price tag but sometimes it feels good to just help people. Meanwhile, Detectives Magozzi and Gino are investigating the case of what they believe to be a serial killer. I love a serial killer thriller. I mean, I REALLY love a serial killer thriller. The only clue the detectives have is that the killer leaves a playing card on the victim. It may just be me but if a book contains a serial killer who either collects trophies or leaves a calling ‘card’, then I am hooked! Is there a link between the missing Marla and the frenzied serial killer? Can a connection be found before another victim meets a horrific death…?

Nothing Stays Buried is packed full of lovely, edge-of-your-seat suspense. Obviously, I love the Monkeewrench team anyway but this book reminded me how fond I am of Detectives Leo Magozzi and Gino Rolseth. And how their relationship has become such a key part of the Monkeewrench series. The humorous banter between the two characters added a wonderful lighthearted note to proceedings which I appreciated. The supporting characters also won through for me. I particularly liked Marla’s farmer father, Walt with his love and concern for his missing daughter and his undying love for his deceased wife. I found Jacob, the Sheriff, equally appealing. All great characters who I would return to again and again.

Would I recommend this book? Most definitely. If you haven’t discovered the Monkeewrench series yet then what are you waiting for!? There are eight wonderful books out there for your delectation. It’s perfect crime fiction reading and a MUST READ for all crime thriller fans. Nothing Stays Buried is a book I really thoroughly enjoyed as it reminded me exactly how much I LOVE this wonderful, suspenseful series.

Four and a half stars out of five.

I chose to read and review an ARC of Nothing Stays Buried. The above review is my own unbiased opinion.

Grace, Annie, Harley & Roadrunner are the Monkeewrench crew. Four geniuses that help law enforcement and others solve crimes that are usually unsolvable. Their supercomputer the Beast really helps. Grace is pregnant and softening up to detective Magozzi.

There's a missing woman and a serial killer on the loose. The cases seem connected. With the Beast, Monkeewrench and the Detectives on the case it'll be sure to get solved. The description put into describing the lake house, Walts farm and everything else was written so well I could picture everything in my minds eyes. This is my second Monkeewrench book and I really look forward to more.

I'm not impressed. They usually make a story that's interesting and thorough. This one is thin, quick, doesn't even pretend the 2 cases aren't linked. Everything falls into place "just so" and it's just disappointing.

Took me all of 4 hours to read it, and no I didn't skip anything.

The most interesting parts aren't listed in the description. Here they are:

-There's a LION living in the woods of Minnesota near the Iowa border. Not causing any trouble; just hanging out.

-Chasing a serial killer in a TORNADO. Really ramps up the tension.

First Sentence: Something horrible was going to happen to Marla.

Minneapolis police Detectives Magozzi and Rolseth are working to find has a serial killer whose trademark is a playing. In a southwestern Minnesota farming community, Grace McBride and the Monkeywrench Software gang agree to work a missing-persons case. Could the two cases be related?

There’s nothing quite like an evocative description—“There was no moon tonight, and the darkness seemed to swallow the beams of her headlights as if she were shining them down the throat of a monster.”—except an interesting cast of characters. Although this is the eighth book in the series, one needn’t have read the previous books as Tracy does a wonderful job of introducing the characters and providing their backstories. The introduction to Harley is particularly touching, and Walt Gustaufson, the father of the missing person, is very real—“Death is a part of life. Always has been, always will be.”

Tracy is very good at conveying the understanding cops have for the families of the victims and how hard working homicide can be—“There were too many goddamned idioms in the English language with the word “dead” in them. Dead end. Dead ringer. Dead reckoning. …” She also has a deft touch at injecting wry humor and analogies into a scene—“Five miles off the freeway, Harley turned his Hummer onto a washboard dirt road and rattled their teeth for ten minutes before easing into a driveway with potholes slightly smaller than the Grand Canyon.”

The plot consists of multiple threads, increasing one-by-one. The suspense and tension are ratcheted up at an increasing pace to where even the weather plays a critical role. The ending may be a bit improbable, but it’s very gratifying.

“Nothing Stays Buried” is exciting, and dramatic, but also touches one’s emotions.

------------------------

In my opinion, this was one of the less well-shaped novels in the series.

We do experience character development for some of the characters, and albeit the Monkeewrench clique does make an appearance, they don’t really contribute much to the story.
Overall, the plot meanders a little. The climax of suspense is finally provided by a natural phenomenon.

As I'm a fan of the series, I still enjoyed reading it, but I'm hoping for an improvement in the next instalment.

I've been following this series since the beginning and love the characters which is the main reason I keep reading them. The stories are great too and the writing flows well. This one was as good as always, though with slightly less technical involvement from Monkeewrench I felt.

Not bad but I think the Monkeewrench crew has lost some of it's allure for me. I found this installment to be a bit predictable and much like other books in the series. I still like the characters but this book was missing the wow factor...

Nothing Stays Buried is what readers of this excellent series have come to expect - a horrific crime balanced with the on-going lives of the Monkeewrench crew. As always, Monkeewrench soldiers on through thick and thin, solving murders and other crimes in their patently unique way. The blend, the mix of personalities in the group, including Magozzi and Gino, has improved with each book. (And, in one reader's opinion, it was already a fine mix at the beginning.) Whether, or how, they survive in the wake of the untimely death of one half of this exceptional writing team remains to be seen.
Patricia Lambrecht's memory will be a blessing to her family and to the extended family she and her daughter Traci have created through their very satisfying stories.

The Monkeewrench team is called in to help track a serial killer who leaves playing cards on his kills.

Meanwhile Grace and Magozzi await the birth of their first child.

In their chase to catch the killer they are called into a country setting that they think may have a connection with their perp but get there just in time for a tornado to strike and a mudslide reveals a dumping/burial site.

Love, love, love this series. Have to wait until next year for the next one.
