Woman Hollering Creek and Other Stories

Rate this book
Loose Woman

Seductive, earthy, and at times confessional, Sandra Cisneros's vibrant collection of poetry celebrates the females aspects of love--from the reflective to the overtly erotic--in a voice recognizable from her powerful works of fiction.

These poems offer narratives as formally elegant as they are emotional and accessible. They are bound together by the voice of one woman, whose language spands cultures and continents. With a multiplicity of moods tumbling through its lines--joyous and introspective, tender and ruthless, self mocking and sincere, often funny and sometimes wild and ruse--Loose Woman offers intoxicating poems of extraordinary insight and vivid imagining. And what makes this particularly special audio is hearing the poems recited in the author's own voice.

Woman Hollering Creek and Other Stories

From the author of the widely acclaimed The House on Mango Street comes a story collection whose characters give voice to the vibrant and varied life on both sides of the Mexican border. From a young girl revealing secrets to a witch woman circling above the village on a predawn flight, the women in these stories offer pure discovery. Woman Hollering Creek confirms Sandra Cisneros's stature as a writer of electrifying talent--and hearing the stories in the author's own voice makes this audio even more poignant.

interesting quote:

"Because those who suffer have a special power, don't they? The power of understanding someone else's pain... And understanding is the beginning of healing."

All the years we've lived and all the lives we can understand are found here in these stories. Perhaps you're similar to the woman who finds herself in a battered home and takes a chance in returning home to her father. Perhaps you can relate to a sassy woman in total control of herself, unapologetically setting her own terms for love and relationships. It may be that you will not see yourself in any of these characters, but that's fine. Many readers and listeners can enjoy the honest, startling reflections of these female characters. So many stories and speculations are here, and the best is that this audiobook features Sandra Cisneros reading her words with her own wonderful nuances and distinct humor. Numerous times I laughed but soon found tears filling my eyes. I've read these stories numerous times over the years, and I've heard Sandra Cisneros read excerpts when she's given lectures. Nothing comes close to listening to her read her own work. Enjoy!

This was my first Sandra Cisneros (which is a crying shame) and It. Was. Gorgeous. I listened to all the poetry and all the short stories with hungry ears, I never got tired of any of it. The way she writes and speaks, sensual, passionate, raw, emotional, humourous, really made me crave her words and seek them out during my day. Stories of family, love, sex, latine identity, the idea of home, connection to nature. It's just so great! The writing is so vivid and thoughtful and grounded and intense and it made me capital F Feel from beginning to end. I love it when a book sits in my gut like this. I just loved this collection very much.

"The first time she had been so surprised she didn't cry out or try to defend herself. She had always said she would strike back if a man, any man, were to strike her.
But when the moment came, and he slapped her once, and then again, and again, until the lip split and bled an orchid of blood, she didn't fight back, she didn't break into tears, she didn't run away as she imagined she might when she saw such things in the telenovelas.
[...]
Instead, when it happened the first time, when they were barely man and wife, she had been so stunned, it left her speechless, motionless, numb. She had done nothing but reach up to the heat on her mouth and stare at the blood on her hand as if even then she didn't understand."

Definitely listen to the audiobook narrated by the authors. She does a fantastic job. I’ll admit that some of Cisneros’ poetry was beyond my level of comfort and I’m not as easily scandalized as I used to be lol. But she is as talented a poet as she is a prose writer. I had already read many of her short stories, as well as The House on Mango Street, while I was in college. I enjoyed listening to her read the prose though. She inspired me to do my own writing, sketches exploring biculturalism, bilingualness, and sexism. Cisneros is someone any person stuck between languages, cultures, or anything really, can relate to.

5 stars. So many emotionally unhealthy relationships! So much sensuality! So much passion! I’m so glad I chose this one on audiobook, because the author’s reading is wonderful! If she were my real life friend, I would need her to tell me details of her daily life just so I could hear her voice! I highly recommend this book, but maybe not for delicate ears.

An interesting collection of poetry and short stories based on the life of someone who has lived and loved and lost. Includes dealing with ethnic issues, sexuality, passion, and abuse. It was difficult for me to read but am glad I finished it.
