I 2011 er det 100 år siden Roald Amundsen erobret Sydpolen. Tor Bomann-Larsens banebrytende biografi foreligger nå som jubileumsutgave. Siden boken kom ut første gang er den blitt oversatt til engelsk, russisk og tysk. Roald Amundsen var den siste av de store oppdagere. En hel verden fulgte ham på hans heroiske ekspedisjoner gjennom Arktis og Antarktis med ”Gjøa”, ”Fram” og Maud”, med flybåter og luftskipet ”Norge”. Et overveldende kildemateriale har gjort det mulig å kartlegge hans liv, fylt til randen av eventyrlig triumf og brustne illusjoner, preget av nådeløs kamp mellom menn – og en romantisk lengsel etter kvinnen.

Having always been fascinated by polar exploration, one of my early heroes was Robert Falcon Scott, the second man to the South Pole. In 1979, the “Heroic Legend” of his Last Expedition was acidly debunked by fellow Briton Roland Huntford, whose Scott and Amundsen (later adapted as a TV miniseries, The Last Place on Earth) exposed Scott’s hidebound naval methodology and was utterly rancorous about his character. Huntford rightly deplored the relative neglect of Roald Amundsen, the Norwegian who beat Scott to the Pole and brought his men back safely. Furious at such iconoclasm, Captain Scott’s defenders fought back zealously to restore his reputation. Only in 2006 did David Crane’s biography achieve a balanced view (see my review at: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...), convincingly rehabilitating Scott as a man, if not quite as an explorer.
Meanwhile, the victorious Amundsen also encountered a debunking countryman. Contrary to Huntford’s treatment of Scott, Tor Bomann-Larsen’s biography (1995) does not deny its subject’s greatness. He considers Amundsen the greatest of all polar explorers, and the Norwegian’s résumé makes a compelling case. Amundsen was the first man to reach both Poles: the South by dog sled in 1911, the North by air in 1926. He also took part in the first overwintering in the Antarctic and completed the first navigations of both the Northwest and Northeast Passages. Even more than Scott's, however, Amundsen’s accomplishments were undermined by the defects of his character; and Bomann-Larsen shows no hesitation in exposing them. The explorer betrayed or quarreled with almost all of his friends, patrons, and supporters, including his own brother Leon and the great Fridtjof Nansen. He ruthlessly discarded subordinates who challenged him (Hjalmar Johansen) or lost their usefulness (Helmer Hanssen). Amundsen’s mid-voyage volte-face from the North Pole to the South—stealing a march on Scott after obtaining Nansen’s Fram under false pretenses—was but one example of his deviousness. He was financially irresponsible and undertook his last expeditions partly to recover from bankruptcy. He adopted, then abandoned, two young girls brought back from Siberia. He apparently pursued only married women, spurning them—after affairs of years or even decades—at the very point he might have married them. When Amundsen disappeared into the Arctic in 1928, on a dramatic flight to rescue his bitter enemy Nobile, Bormann-Larsen speculates that the old man may have felt he had exhausted every other option.
Roald Amundsen, his biographer concludes, “laid a smokescreen over his own life.” Thanks to the discovery of the Amundsen brothers’ business correspondence (15,000 documents found only in the 1990’s), Bomann-Larsen has been able to penetrate that smokescreen. Admittedly, his book has many flaws. It has been criticized for a poor English translation; and, indeed, its breezy, almost “slangy” style sometimes seems at odds with the bleakness of its subject matter. Its treatment of Amundsen’s early explorations (the Belgica, Gjøa, and even South Polar expeditions) seems almost cursory, offering little geographic or technical detail. I did find it more informative about the later expeditions, perhaps because I knew much less about them. While there are many better books (including Roland Huntford’s) on Amundsen’s career as an explorer, it is on a personal level that Bomann-Larsen’s biography excels. He provides a fascinating portrait of an undeniably great, deeply flawed, and ultimately enigmatic man.

Amundsen war mir bisher ein Begriff. Aber eben nur ein Begriff. Irgendwas mit Abenteuern und so. Zum Glück erschien im mare-Verlag diese lesenswerte Biographie, die uns den Menschen hinter dem Namen näher bringt.
Boman-Larsen nimmt sich Zeit für seinen Helden und geht auf diesen ein, ohne zu tief in psychologischen Mutmassungen zu versinken. Da auch die Menschen aus Amundsens Umfeld zu Wort kommen, erhält man als Leser trotzdem einen guten Eindruck davon, wie der Seefahrer auf andere Leute (ein-)gewirkt hat.
Glorifiziert wird hier nichts und niemand. Der Autor hält eine gewisse Distanz, kommt jedoch nicht darum herum, neben den vielen positiven Aspekten, auch die düsteren Seiten Amundsens anzusprechen. Genau diese Teile fand ich persönlich sehr faszinierend, machen sie aus einem Symbol doch einen realen Menschen.
Schade fand ich nur, dass in meinen Augen zu wenig auf die Zeit im Eis eingegangen wird. Darüber hätte ich gerne mehr erfahren. Ansonsten ist dieses Buch eine lesenswerte Biographie, von der ich einiges lernen konnte. Man braucht keine Vorkenntnisse bezüglich des Themas, um zu diesem Werk zu greifen, weswegen es sich auch für Leser eignet, die noch nichts oder wenig über Amundsen wissen.
So wie es bei mir der Fall war. Bevor ich dieses Buch gelesen habe.

Завдання бінго про Антарктиду далося мені важко. Я не могла знайти нічого цікавого мені українською мовою, а російською знаходилася здебільшого всяка езотерично-містична маячня. Тому я вирішила зупинити вибір на біографії Амундсена, і заодно ознайомитися з серією ЖЗЛ, бо скільки її бачила, ніколи не мала з нею справи. Читала в ел. форматі.
Автор дуже ретельно і детально розписує все життя Амундсена, ледь не по днях від народження і до його зникнення в 1928 році. Не обходить увагою і Антарктиду, заради якої я затіяла це читання, але говорить про це лише побіжно - ну висадилися, пішли і повернулися, все нормально. Набагато більше уваги присвячено тому, як Амундсен вів справи, вів листування, готувався до експедицій, які мав стосунки з братами і коханими, видавав книжки, проводив лекційні турне різними континентами, судився за свої будинки і шукав гроші на подорожі. Оцій всій метушні приділено 95% книжки. А тому, що дійсно могло бути цікаво - саме подорожам, як він там все організував, що і як там було, що він робив і чому його харизма так гуртувала людей навколо нього, сказано лише мимохідь, кількома словами. Загалом склалося враження, що Амундсен був авантюристом в хорошому значенні цього слова. Сміливий, хоробрий, рішучий, цікавився усім новим, амбітний - хотів підкорити обидва полюси. Його любили люди - від простого народу до королів, йому пробачали поразки і невдачі, його підтримували і вітали захоплено в усьому світі, він мав сильних і багатих покровителів. Він знаходив величезні суми грошей на свої авантюри, і щоразу йому це вдавалося. Попри це, він не був ідеальним. Він так і не зміг одружитися, хоча мав не одне захоплення, але якщо він зміг підкорити Антарктиду, але щоразу втікав, коли амурна справа доходила до одруження. Тому нащадків він не має. І власне, як він жив, так і загинув - у пригоді, намагаючись врятувати експедицію біля північного полюсу. Ніхто так і не знайшов ні тіла Амундсена, ні літака, на якому він летів.
Читалося досить нудно, забагато води. Може, комусь і треба така детальна біографія, але мені не вистачило екшену, дії, якоїсь родзинки.

Dios que me ha tomado meses leer este libro!!!! No porque estuviera mal escrito. Creo que es la biografia mas objetiva de este caballero que se denominaba aventurero polar nada más por tener el título. Un tio inmaduro que ademas de tener aires de grandeza y creerse el unico y máximo explorador polar. Me ha dejado con un sabor amargo cómo eeste tipo durante toda su vida, consiguió venderle la idea y que le patrocinasen todas las empresas a las que él se creia tener derecho exclusivo. Traicionó a sus mentores, amigos y famila. Hizo chanchullos de todo tipo. Se enganchaba de manera platonica a mujeres casadas. En tiempos como este, a este no le hubiesen pagado ni el billete de autobus. Y al final va intentando hacerse la victima y se lleva consigo a 5 personas más. Un payaso hasta el final. Todo esto no es más que un recordatorio de cómo una persona, que a parte de gloria, fama y sacarle partido economico a una empresa tan significativa como la exploración cientifica, no es mejor persona que una corriente que lleva una vida tranquila aportando a la sociedad. Todos esconden sus trapos sucios. Pero este tipo puedo concluir que si bien tenia capacidad para sobrevivir en el frio polar, para actividades igual de complejas como las relaciones humanas y la ciencia, era un puto cero a la izquierda. Ya tuve suficiente de este pendejo…una puta decepción.

Fantástico conocer detalles de la vida y las hazañas de este personaje del siglo 20. Nada fácil la lectura de este libro. A veces difícil entender lo que el autor quiso expresar, probablemente por su estilo, o la traducción, o que utilice citas textuales de otros documentos.

Gut zu lesen.
Mit einem Augenzwinkern wird der Lebensweg Amundsens nachvollzogen, ohne in Verherrlichung oder Verriss zu verfallen. Auch ein Polbezwinger ist eben nur ein Mensch.
