Josie Conley has no idea who tried to kill her. She has no enemies, is a successful business owner, and works hard to give herself a good life. While trying to deal with the reality that someone wants her dead, she doesn’t have time to fall in love with a handsome detective. But fate doesn’t take into consideration what a person wants. Can Josie and Dean find peace with each other? Can Dean find the person who tried to kill Josie before they strike again? Or will a sinister plot damage destiny’s plot of a second chance at life?
*Each novel in this series can be read as a standalone. Each novel revolves around a different detective.
**I received a copy of Damage: The Men of Law from the author in exchange for a voluntary and honest review**
Damage: The Men of Law by Casey Clipper is book two of the series, it can be read as a standalone but I'd recommend reading the first book, Heist, as this one is a continuation and has the same characters in it.
First off, if I could give this book 20 stars I would because its that good plus you have the ending that you'll go "Wow I didn't see that coming" it's a wild ride at the finish line. I can't wait for the next book that will be out next year.
Detective Dean Rooney responds to a stabbing and is soon embroiled in the lives of Josie Conley and her family. He's still reeling from the death of his wife, Erin and unborn son, so the entire department is worried that he'll get involved too deeply, making it hard to come back. The department is under investigation from the jewel thief in the first book, so he knows that he'll have to tread carefully while trying to solve the crime. Little does he know that Josie Conley will soon find a way into his heart while he searches for the person who stabbed her. He asks for the help of his former partner, Jason and his wife Hannah as the department is short staffed right now. It will take everyone including Jason's former detective father while trying to convince a pregnant Hannah to not to take risks.
Josie Conley can't remember who stabbed her in her home but with the long road to recovery ahead of her, she'll try to help find her assailant. She has a successful salon and contracts with the Pennsylvania Film department plus an assistant who wants her to sell her half of the business. When Dean starts putting the information they have, she'll be in danger more than before. He'll move her into his house where they soon start to fall for each other. There are a lot of loose and surprising ends that will include Dean, Hannah, Jason, Josie and her family plus the ending that is just plain wow!
Detective Dean Rooney is in over his head. When the detective is called to a case where the victim has been stabbed and left to die it has affected him more than he realizes. He knows he is walking a fine line between professional and unprofessional and it doesn't help that his department is under investigation after everything that occurred in book 1, Heist.
Josie Conley has no idea on why anyone would try and kill her. She is a hard worker and hasn't made any enemies that she is aware of. But soon we discover the threat on her life continues.
Can Josie and Dean remain "professional" when it is clear both are attracted to each other? Only Dean won't let go of his past and allow himself a future with anyone. Can Dean and his partners protect Josie when she needs it the most?
This book was so awesome on so many different levels that I couldn't put it down!!
I loved Dean and all of his flaws. He was so destroyed on the inside yet he kept fighting to keep Josie safe and was so loyal to his friends, especially Jason and Hannah. Dean knew he had feelings for Josie but was so unable to move forward that he pushed her away and she was left alone.
Josie was great and I liked that she was in control of her business and worked super hard to get there. I thought Marc was definitely interesting but Becky seemed like a loose cannon. I felt bad with everything that she went through and some of the revelations in the book show how she was definitely too trusting of those around her and it was pretty sad at the end of the book to see how everything tied together.
I absolutely loved Hannah and think she is the absolute best character. I loved her personality and don't mess with me attitude. She is caring but kick ass and I am so glad that she was so key in this book. I loved Jason's protectiveness and hopefully they are all back for the next book and we can see how Jason adapts to the changes in their lives.
Can't wait to see what happens in the next book!! This is a great series!!
WOW!! Another fantastic book by Casey Clipper! Damage was a roller-coaster ride you don't want to miss.
I knew Dean was damaged from reading Heist but I didn't know the extent of his grief. My heart broke and I cried. I wanted to hold him and comfort him. To mend his shattered soul. I admire his friends for the unconditional support they offered. Leave it to Hannah to talk cold turkey to Dean. She was brash but he needed to hear what she had to say.
Josie was such a strong woman. I don't think I could handle all she went through without giving up. Without becoming a basket case. I admired her determination to return to 'normal.'
I correctly determined who attacked Josie before it was revealed. I just didn't have everything figured out. There was definitely a major twist in the end. I never saw it coming. Casey Clipper likes to throw in surprises and keep her readers on their toes.
In case you can't tell, I loved Damage! I encourage you to read all books written by the very talented Casey Clipper.
I knew Dean had a lot of troubled times from his past, but I never thought anyone would help him over come it like Josie did! Hats off to Casey Clipper for another great read and series! The men of law are awesome stories if you haven't read what she has done so far your missing out! Josie is such an incredible woman to have gone through such an attack and having to over come her fears. Dean knows just how to help her out with that. (psst. wish I had someone like Dean when it happened to me!) An the person's of interest was great, but I have to say I was a little shocked as to who did this terrible thing to our Josie! Ah, yes lets not forget our Hannah and Jason from Book 1 is also helping out in this one! Still loving "MY" Hannah!!
Okay, this book grabbed me right from the get go. Casey is excellent at setting the scene, especially crime scenes I feel like I'm watching an episode of Criminal Minds while I'm reading her stories. I knew I was going to love Dean's story after I read about him in the first Men of Law book. I also knew a little bit about what he'd been through and I think it makes this book more emotional than the first. It's a gripping mystery with a touch of humor and the chemistry between Dean and Josie is excellent. I would highly recommend this book, the authors ability to write these amazing characters will make you root for and also cry for them.
