She won her freedom. Can she win a war?Commander Rhys Rykus is facing court martial. With his career on the line, he’s ordered to keep his distance from the brainwashed Ash and protect her from afar, but sinister elements threaten her safety. He accepts a new mission that puts them on the same warship, knowing it will take all his self-control to fight his feelings for her.Lieutenant Ramie Ashdyn is no stranger to fighting for her life. Still under the influence of the Coalition’s brainwashing, she cares little for her own safety. She merely wants to protect the Coalition… and reconnect with Rykus. Rykus knows how important Ash is to keeping all of them alive, but the target on her back is enormous. Will the growing threat to the Coalition take down Ash and Rip’s only shot at love?
Sandy Williams writes urban fantasy and science fiction, both with a strong shot of romance. She's a fan of the enemies-to-lovers trope and loves books with high stakes and fantastical settings. When she's not being a bookworm, she loves playing board and card games like Dominion, Quacks of Quedlinburg, Dungeon Petz, etc (but not Goblins because she ALWAYS loses that damn game).
SHADES OF HONOR continues the Anomaly series. The Anomaly series is a great military sci-fi series, that I feel can be enjoyed by urban fantasy readers and sci-fi readers alike. The heroine effectively has supernatural powers that make her one of the best soldiers in the Known Universe making her seem a lot like urban fantasy heroine.
SHADES OF HONOR keeps all the things I loved about about SHADES OF TREASON, everything from the intense battles and political intrigue to the great romance subplot. SHADES OF HONOR adds to that including an epic chase scene and a lot of great character development. SHADES OF TREASON spent most of the time devoted to characters just introducing them, this allows SHADES OF HONOR to actually take time to develop the characters know that you are familiar with them. Sandy Williams put a lot of effort into really fleshing out Ash and Rip in SHADES OF HONOR, and I'm eager to see how they continue to develop in the next book.
My only problem with SHADES OF HONOR is the same one I had with SHADES OF TREASON. And I even had reason to believe it would be avoided too. About halfway through the book Ash and Rip talk about how stupid it was for them to have sex when they were literally being chased down by an enemy force. So I thought the sex scene in this book wouldn't be so stupid. But it still was. When Ash and Rip should be getting ready for an op only minutes away, they decide that is a good time to have sex, and in the armory of all places. I'm sure others won't have a problem with this, but it really makes it hard for me to suspend my disbelief.
In the end, what made SHADES OF HONOR such an amazing book for me was that it actually made me laugh on multiple occasions. So if nothing else I said piqued your interest maybe that does. SHADES OF HONOR isn't a "hard science" science fiction novel. SHADES OF HONOR focuses on character and world development, so you don't have to worry about pages and pages of technical information. SHADES OF HONOR is just an amazing story that takes place in space, and I highly recommend it.
It's been almost a year and a half since I read the first book in this series, and I'd forgotten a lot of details and even some basics about it. This story takes off shortly after the events of that first book and gives the reader few reminders even of crucial information. So unfortunately, I spent almost the first quarter of this book a bit lost, diminishing my enjoyment of what could have been a better story.
Once I got with the program, I did enjoy it, though. In this book, Ash (an anomaly, a human genetically superior in strength, intelligence, healing ability, etc.) and Ryker, her fail-safe (superior officer who had loyalty-trained her to fight for the Coalition and obey his commands), are assigned to be security on what is presented as a diplomatic mission but what they see as a suicide mission. Multiple issues raised in the previous book--how did Ash's old teammate know about telepaths, how will Ash and Ryker juggle responsibilities of their jobs with their feelings for each other, how will both deal with the fact that Ryker can usurp her free will with a command, what is happening to the balance of power in the Known Universe--are revisited . A few new interesting characters are introduced, including a tough-minded female anomaly who is an expert at computer systems and a ship's captain who resents the diplomatic VIP and her entourage encroaching on his command, both characters who potentially could be the focus of some future stories.
Meanwhile, this book is much like the last in that it leaves many questions unanswered and makes only minimal headway on the overarching storyline. I hope that the next book in the series will be released sooner than a year and a half away and that it contains more internal reminders for forgetful readers like me of what happened before. Otherwise, it also may end up being an exercise in frustration for at least a portion of the story, and I find I have diminishing patience for that.
As apart of Sandy's Reader's Guild I received a free copy. THANKS AGAIN SANDY!! : )
The second book did not disappoint. It was such a pleasure to read Shades of Honor. I checked off a lot of items that I wanted to see in this installment. -Did it have an action packed scenes? - Check -Was I hanging on by a thread to get some Ash and Rip time? - Check -Did those moments deliver? - Check -Do we meet new and interesting characters? - Check -Do we get to see more of this awesome world? - Check
My favorite magical moments were
Rip tried his best to keep away from Ash but, those type of plans only last for a few hot seconds. Ash and Rip were are like magnets... especially when they are left alone together for any amount of time. It will be interesting to see the evolution of their relationship in the next book. I really enjoyed the handful new characters that were introduced and loved how they each have their own issues they are dealing with. We get to see the layers slowly peel away for each of them leading to interesting interactions, especially with Ash.
So, the plot is building up to is this big meeting at Ysbar Station that can change the tides of the war. Everyone is expecting it to go left sans the minister prime. How cool is the tachyon drive that the Sariceans have? It reminds me of the blink drive in Syfy's Dark Matter. The Coalition
All in all, this was a fun and excited read. The relationships are spectacular. This book included a bit of everything to keep you guessing and wanting more... enemies turning into friends, friends who were possibly the enemy, family secrets, secret romances, secret alliances and so much more.
Wow! This was so good! I can't get enough of Ash and Rip! Ash and Rip are on a new mission together, with Rip as her superior officer and told to keep his distance from her. Ash is vital to the mission and Rip has to keep her safe whilst keeping his professional and personal relationship with her in balance. Ash is seen as unstable, volatile and dangerous and she has to deal with the prejudices that come with being an anomaly. She is not one to follow rules and is not afraid to speak her mind - definitely not the person to have on a delicate diplomatic mission. In Rip's own words - she is infuriatingly reckless, beautifully unpredictable, and undeniably addicting. This is my favourite in the series so far - we get to meet Rip's family, and learn more about Rip and Ash's pasts. There is plenty of character development as we get to see them outside their comfort zones, and see their strengths and vulnerabilities. They are both strong, determined characters and their dynamics are fascinating. I became completely involved in this book - it was so intense, filled with intriguing characters, sizzling romance, nail-biting action and a thrilling, unpredictable plot. I’ve fallen head over heels in love with Ash & Rip and their world, and I cannot wait to continue on with this series!
Shades of Honor, by author Sandy Williams, is the second installment in the Anomaly series. Having faced prison time, been accused of murder, treason, and brainwashed by a powerful telepath, Lieutenant Ramie "Ash" Ashdyn has a new leash on life. The only problem is that that leash is tight since she is considered dangerous. Assigned to a new team, lead by Major Liles, Ash finds herself protecting politicians on Meryk.
I loved this second book in the Anomaly series. Lieutenant Ramie Ashdyn is a tough as nails anomaly who has fallen hard for Commander Rhys Rykus, who is her fail-safe and supposedly has total control over her, since she’s been brainwashed by the Coalition. Ash fights Rip's influence at every turn, and enjoys giving him a hard time whenever she can, and he wouldn’t have her any other way. He’s supposed to keep his distance from her, but they end up on a mission where they’ll have to work together to keep the minister prime safe, and it is harder and harder to resist giving in to their feelings and be together. Ash must also deal with the complication of an attempt on her life, the telepath threat, dealing with the other anomalies on the ship, and her difficulty in integrating into a new team after the deaths of everyone on her old team. Life is more complicated than ever, and it was a pleasure watching these two navigate through all the danger and make it through mostly in one piece. I loved all the action as well as Ash’s interaction with Rip and her new teammates. This is such a fantastic series, I can’t wait to read the next story to find out what happens next.
This is the writer that hooked me on her Shadow Reader series.
It has almost everything I love about her writing style. And supporting characters a-plenty here, I really missed them last book. Funnily, Ash is not happy to have a cast of supporting characters again, she's too busy trying to keep a wall up around herself to be happy to have a group of people care about her again. Can you say "insular"?
Ash and Rip are my favorite character couple to be annoyed with right now. Seriously, Ash & Rip are a perfect fit for each other, they're both grindstones that would pulverize anyone else less strong they tried to be with, but with each other they are able to hold their own. Neither one of them is needy or mushy or incapable, a little bit broken but they understand their own particular type of broken. And it certainly doesn't hurt that they're two strong and fit people who are quite easy on the eyes (I imagine). So, of course, they spend half the fricking book tortured by their love, remembering and alluding to the steamy, three day bonk-fest they had before the book starts and now must not at any costs be repeated where the reader can enjoy because they're on a mission together. le sigh. Don't get me wrong, a little sexual tension is good, but come on, why do they have to take two steps back? No more Ross and Rachel; no more Ted and Robin; no more Olivia and Fitz/Jake; just be together and be happy and bone dammit!
The action (aside from the eventual horizontal action) was great. This book really didn't take a breath. When people weren't punching each other there were space battles, when there weren't space battles there was parental hostility, when there wasn't parental hostility there was political manuevering and intrigue that led to more battles. Loved it. It was great to see Ash and Rip interact together and separately with a whole new group of people, and see how those dynamics developed.
One thing I missed that Williams does so well is banter. I feel like the dialogue was a lot more tense and serious (which is appropriate for the book) than her typical writing. I missed the witty repartee that was so prevalent in Shadow Readers, but I have to make peace with the fact that Ash and Rip aren't really the jokester types, there more the toss-a-grenade-behind-you-as-you-jump-off-a-cliff-and-figure-out-the-landing-plan-on-the-way-down kind of people, and I'm okay with that.
I'm totally looking forward to book 3. It kind of pains my pride to say this, but I don't know where book 3 will take us in the story. I don't know how she's going to tie together Glory, and Sariceans, and telepaths, and mob bosses to resolve our plot but I can't wait to find out.
For the love of all things holy Sandy, stop reading review and write! Write!
I really liked the first book in this series but I loved this one even more. I loved the characters especially the new side characters that were introduced in this book. Sandy Williams is great at writing really likable characters.
Ash is still my favourite character of the series. I liked seeing the more emotional side of her that is dealing with the things that happened in the first book. But what I liked most about her character in this book was that she was still witty and confident whilst trying to handle her emotions. I liked Rykus' character a lot more in this book because we got to know a lot more about his background and his relationship with his father.
I really enjoyed the storyline, it was just as action packed as the first but this time you get to see more of a political side of things with the relationships of the planets which was really interesting. I feel like I got a better understanding of the universe/worlds in this book. I liked finding out different things about each planet and I'm excited to read more about them.
Overall I loved this book. I think it's a great sequel and I can't wait for the next book in the series.
Well, I was glad to see there’s a continuation of the 1st book (there’s nothing worse than finding a gripping story to only realize later that you have to wait a few month for the next installment), but it unfortunately, was not as good. My main complaint is that author looked kind of afraid to unravel all the pretty storylines she has started in the book (slight spoilers ahead), meeting with parents led to nowhere, story with telepaths ground to halt, travel to Sareceans was a disaster (I had to ask myself later what was the point of all this useless traveling), even a relationship with Rip was kind of left hanging at the middle of nothing and fell completely flat due to absolute lack of backbone of mentioned individual. And the ending looked like “well guys, I’ll try so hard not make it look like a cliffhanger, instead I’ll make it look like they just didn’t care enough whether they will meet later or not”... well. Disappointing.
If you enjoyed Shades of Treason, then Shades of Honor will not disappoint. This story picks up where the first book left off, following Ash and Rykus as they navigate political intrigue and family drama, shoot their way out of deadly situations, and continue to get it on at very inappropriate times/places (facepalm). Successfully blending action, mystery, and romance, Shades of Honor is a satisfying follow up, on par with the first book. I am already looking forward to the third installment!
There's a good underlying mystery, a lot of action, and metric ton of sexual tension. Shades of Honor is a compelling read with a solid sci fi base and an added fillip of romance. Can't wait to see where Williams takes this series next. Sci fi fans, take note. This is an author you will want to follow!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! There was the perfect amount of action and story and romance building and character development that I read it twice! I love Rip! He's one of my favorite male characters ever and the sassiness and teasing personality of Ash is a perfect match for him. I would definitely equate this read to that of Linnea Sinclair who is one of my all time fav sci fi romance writers ever! If you like her books, you will definitely love this series!
Shorter than its predecessor but definitely not feeling any less action-packed, the Ash-Rip saga continues. I am starting to fall hard for Ms. Williams' universe, with its unique anomalies, interesting side-characters, and noble intentions that more often than not lead to bloodshed.
Shades of Honor picks up a month after Shades of Treason. Since then, Ash has been unable find closure for her loss or bond with her new team. With a mission five days out, she knows how it important it is to do so, but instead she's determined to solve several mysteries.
I'm enjoying this world that Sandy Williams has created. The sentient ships remind me of Farscape, an old favorite of mine. She's done a very good job of illustrating the tension between Ash and Rykus - it's almost palpable.
I'm anxiously awaiting book three, which unfortunately has no confirmed release date, title or blurb.
I liked it, the many action scenes are well described (we follow what's going on), Ash is still fascinating, and Rhys still just as honorable and likable. My main problem is the way the characters talk to the Coalition Premier. We are talking about the leader who rules a coalition of several planets. She's not just anyone. And Rhys, a commander, Ash, a lieutenant, and the other soldiers, talk to her like she has the same social status as them. It is very hard to believe. Likewise, she should be surrounded by a variety of advisers at all times, but she is almost always seen alone with the soldiers. Those kind of implausible details got me off the plot a bit. Also, , and I hope Rhys' moral conflict will subside in the next book (s), because if I understand and sympathize with him (the tension between his honor and his love for Ash is legitimate), it becomes heavy, at least for me. Their relationship would have to evolve one way or another. I'm currently reading book 3 (and it's better!).
Loved it! Even more than book one, and I didn't think it was possible. It's non-stop action almost from start to finish, and a lot of unexpected twists and turns. The story is compelling and I found myself hooked from page one. I read this book in less than a day, and if I could spare more time for reading I would have probably read it in just one sitting. The placements of the sex scenes in these books is a bit debatable, but if Rykus and Ash can joke about it, I guess we'll let them have it their way. Shades of Honor is book 2 in the Anomaly series (after Shades of Treason). Although the author does give a bit on insight throughout the book about what happened before, it's still not a book I would recommend as a stand alone. Now I definitely need to read book three asap...
Seriously, if you haven't already read this series, what are you doing with your life?
Just like the first instalment, I absolutely DEVOURED this. There is just something about the way Sandy Williams writes that draws you in immediately, right from the very first page and makes you want to keep reading and reading and reading until you finish.
I adore her witty lines, the descriptive way she writes that is far from mediocre and entirely unique. I LOVE the characters and their personalities, and the cherry on top is the switching of POV which gives us insight into both Ash and Rip's head.
Im so very eager for the final instalment of this book, I would happily wait an eternity for it.
Second book in the anomaly trilogy, still following Ash and Rykes, trying to untangle the mess happening in the coalition. While Ash is adjusting to her new team, she is still trying to understand more about the murder of her previous team. Meanwhile, she and Rykes need to reunite for another very dangerous mission with the prime. This book felt a little bit slower than the first one, didn't learn much more about telepathy (at least not as much as I would have liked obviously). The romance side doesn't disappoint, and the fighting scenes are perfect as always. I wished more would have been uncovered here, the last book should make up for it.
Author Sandy Williams continues her Anomaly series with Shades of Honor which picks up where Shades of Treason leaves off with Ash being reassigned to a new teams and feeling them out while still dealing with her feelings for her fail-safe. Her fail-safe is the man that trained her and the man with who she is in love with. But as things progress Ash and her fail-safe are assigned to a diplomatic mission to a station in the middle of no where were they are caught up within an insurrection, This is a fast passed story and one that I recommend for any science fiction fan.
Book 2 was enjoyable although I do feel that not a lot actually happened in it. I feel that nothing important came to light and it was a bit of a waste in terms of their main mission.
However, I did enjoy that we found out a little bit more about our protagonists personal lives.
I will be reading book 3 but my main reason is because I want to see how they interact in their homes. I'm especially looking forward to reading about Glory and it's intrigues.
This is the second in the series and it is better than the first. There are lots of unexpected twists and turns that develop the plot. And, even though Sandy Williams is a Texas A & M graduate, there are a couple vivid sex scenes. I will be ready for the third in the series soon.
I think I like this better than the first of the series... a But holy cow, Batman... so many unanswered questions and no indication of when the next one in the series will be out!
Not quite as compelling as book one, but still thrilling and moves the world along well, looking forward to seeing how things conclude for Ash and Rykus in book three.
The frist book in a while who kept me up all night reading. A science fiction book with focus on the characters and action, letting the world building come naturally as the story moves forward.
