Henning Juul is grieving the death of his son from a fire in their apartment in Oslo. He believes that the fire was not an accident and sets out to investigate the circumstances. Henning is a crime reporter and believes that arson was used to scare him away from his current story. He sets out to find any connections between this fire and his current case.

While investigating the fire, he feels that his life along with his associates is in constant danger. This makes it hard to trust anyone including the local police. In an interesting twist, the darker side of Oslo gets narrated from the criminal's point of view. As the story develops, clues are revealed and all the characters eventually merge towards a dramatic conclusion.

This is the fifth and final novel in the series but can be read as a stand-alone novel. I enjoyed Killed and the escalating tension kept me engaged to the end. The release date for the book in the United States is June 2018.

Firstly, stunning cover and a bit of a foreshadowing one too.

Killed is the last (sob 😥) book in the Henning Juul series by Thomas Enger and it has wrapped it up so perfectly. One of the finest Scandinavian crime series out there at the moment, Killed had me from the outset.

I don’t want to say too much, because if you’re planning on reading it, I would highly recommend you read the previous books in order. Killed essentially tied up any and all loose ends that have been running through the books, so this really gives a very satisfying feel to the overall reading experience.

I read Killed in a handful of sittings over a Sunday as I knew I would have the time to get stuck into it. I genuinely couldn’t stop reading it once I started. That prologue!!!! 😱 I was never going to put the book down once I read that. And to be honest, I kept reading at any spare moment because I had to get answers!

Killed picks up with Henning still desperately trying to find his sons killer and it seems that every way he turns, there is an obstacle put in his way. I found myself getting frustrated on his behalf, because he gets so close and then something stops him in his tracks. It really added to the tension of the book because I felt like I was feeling his frustration!

Past misdeeds and epic misdirection made Killed a thoroughly gripping book. The characters were unreliable, the action was full on, and Henning is at the heart of it all. I feel a little sorry to be saying goodbye to this series because Henning is such a great character. Driven to find answers to the catastrophe that ended his family life so horrifically, he is dogged in his quest to find out the truth and thanks to Thomas Enger’s skill as a writer, the reader really feels like they are on this journey with Henning!

Killed is the perfect end to the series. It answers a host of questions from the previous books in the series, but it also gives the reader a feeling of satisfaction when everything comes together.

Utterly gripping, with a real human aspect, Henning’s last hurrah is perfection. Bravo, Mr. Enger.

Highly recommended!

This is an emotional & compelling finale to Enger’s much-loved Henning Juul series. I really enjoyed this one - as always, Enger writes fantastic (and totally endearing) characters. One note: this one will definitely be best appreciated by those who have read the series!

Killed is the first book I’ve read by Thomas Enger and since it’s the finale of a five book series featuring investigative journalist, Henning Juul, I was rather nervous about how it would work as a standalone book.  However, I needn’t have worried as the author has been incredibly generous to readers who’ve had the temerity not to read the previous four books by providing a comprehensive dramatis personae and recaps on events in earlier books.  These are brief enough not to annoy readers of the whole series but thorough enough to allow new readers to work out what’s been going on.

The book opens with an eerie, haunting prologue that plunges the reader right into the action.  What follows is an extended flashback as the events of previous months are related from the viewpoint of the book’s many characters.   What emerges is a story of corruption, intimidation, blackmail and worse, with an awful lot of scores being settled.  Shadowy figures start to emerge from the darkness and, when it comes down to it, who can you really trust?  The author expertly weaves the different strands of the plot together, with the final pattern revealed only right at the end.  By that time, it’s not giving too much away to say that the list of characters is a lot smaller.

Coming in at the final book, it’s difficult for me to judge how readers who’ve enjoyed the whole series will feel about the way the story is resolved, especially in respect of Henning.  Personally, I felt I didn’t quite get to know Henning as a person as much as I’d have liked, but then I’m sure this would have been different if I’d read the earlier books – and I can hardly blame the author for that!   What I did learn is that Henning is one tough cookie and not easily diverted once he’s embarked on a course of action!

I really enjoyed Killed.  It had a fast-paced, compelling story line that kept me wanting to read on.  Definitely in the “one more chapter and then I’ll go to sleep” category.  My one regret is coming in at the end of the series and that I won’t be able to enjoy Henning’s journey in the way so many other fans have done.   It’s a mistake I won’t repeat if, as is to be hoped, Thomas Enger embarks on another crime thriller series.

I received a review copy courtesy of publishers, Orenda Books, in return for an honest and unbiased review. The book is translated by Kari Dickson.

Can someone tell me why it has taken me so long to read a book by this author? I mean, WTAF have I been doing? #MyBad – luckily I have the rest of the series, so I WILL be going back and catching up from the start. (I don’t have to read a series in order, in fact – I rarely do unless I come across the book as a debut!) #DontJudgeMe
The reader finds themselves in Oslo, Norway where you’ll stumble across regret, loss, the search for answers/the truth, blackmail, betrayal, secrets/lies, the past, corruption, pain, payback and guilt. Can we get anymore emotional!? This book really goes deep into the depths of your soul and doesn’t let go, that’s for sure!
Well slap me silly – what a captivating prologue! It was quite morose but certainly hit you where it counts for maximum impact. I loved the imagery and atmosphere of this book, beautifully captured so the reader feels, touches, hears, sees and smells everything about the place they are reading on the pages. I also loved the way the beginning was the end…or was it? Superbly done! The significance of the title is also a clever ploy as we know someone gets killed…but who? Told from the third person, we have various POV’s to take us through the storyline – the writing, characters and descriptions were brilliant and again, I found myself dismayed by the fact that I have only just discovered this author! There was an underlying sadness that seemed to shroud every page and despite knowing what happened in previous books, it was a quite emotive read – you could feel the passion and determination of Juul as he searched for answers.
I was impressed with the Cast of Character that the author listed at the start of the book. I read through each and felt I got to know exactly what I needed to, in order to place them in the context of the story. Henning Juul is the main character and he’s an investigative journalist who seems to have a knack for pissing the wrong people off! He also doesn’t seem to know when…or care…about backing off. LOVE him! His backstory is sad but explains why he won’t give up in his search for the truth and justice – even if it costs him. He also seems to be like a cat with nine lives – escaping numerous attempts from others to remove him from this life! He is stubborn, but also has a reckless side. I absolutely loved everything about this character and was invested in following him on his dangerous journey!
There were so many other characters I could mention – Juul’s sister, the baddies, the police – however, I think you need to read the story to really grasp their significance. But I do need to mention Bjelland – only because every time I saw his name, I read Bell-end ….appropriate? Probably not but unfortunately I am rubbish at the pronunciation of names (ask poor Matt Wesolowski- or VezOhLofSki, the correct pronunciation …as I now know!) so I have to make them up to keep me from getting distracted from the story.
Would I recommend this book? You bet your sweet arse I would! Dripping with mystery, intrigue and suspense, this atmospheric crime thriller will keep you guessing until the very last page. Thomas Enger….you #killed it! (See what I did there?) I can’t wait to go back and read this series from the start, but I also found this easy enough to read as a stand alone!

So we’ve been  Burned, Pierced ,  Scarred and Cursed so now prepare to be Killed by the last instalment in Thomas Enger’s superlative Henning Juul series. A reading experience of mixed pleasures it has to be said, with the excitement of a new book by Enger, but equally a tinge of sadness that this appears to be where we and Henning Juul go our separate ways…
Not afraid to repeat myself, as I have reviewed every book to date, I would once again draw your attention to Enger’s consistently polished storytelling, and ability to really bring his character’s traits- both weak and strong, good or bad- straight into the reader’s consciousness. Having concealed and revealed various people’s involvement in the tragic fire that resulted in the death of Juul’s son, this book again throws some curveballs Juul’s way, and Enger seems to delight in raising our suspicions, and then deflating our theories as Juul doggedly continues to pursue the truth. I think this book also fulfils a fair quota of the Tertullian seven deadly sins, as there is more than enough greed, murder, fraud and false witness to go round. Balanced with this, there is also a subtly nuanced depiction of the softer and vulnerable side of some of the characters, that toys with our perception of them, and at times invokes in us an equally subtle shift in our sympathy for them. I think this is why I have enjoyed Enger’s series so much, as in far as it is steeped in the recognisable tropes of much Scandinavian crime fiction, there is another arc to his writing that is sensitive and emotive, and really allows the reader to connect beyond the superficial narrative of an ordinary thriller. I also enjoyed the switching between two locations, the contrasts that Enger draws between the European and South American temperaments, and their differing attitudes to life, wealth, and justice.
This is one of the few series that I think works better by starting from the first and reading sequentially. As much as you can join in with the trials and travails of Juul in Killed , there is a gripping and layered back story waiting to be discovered, and with the accrued knowledge of events from the previous instalments, it definitely heightens the enjoyment of this final book. Having followed Juul’s story for some time, I felt it was time that this poor man achieved some sense of closure, and it has to be said that this book brings many chickens home to roost, with the obligatory dishing out of physical violence that Juul seems to attract. In the light of what I have just said about reading the series in its entirety, I have rather boxed myself into a corner, as to how much more I can tell you, and my lips are firmly sealed. Just keep that chilling prologue in the back of your mind as the story weaves to its conclusion…
As the curtain is drawn down on the ballad of Henning Juul, I am curious to see what Enger will produce next, and what the liberty of finishing this series will spark in his imagination. This has been an exemplary series, and well worth reading all five books. So after being Burned, Pierced ,  Scarred  Cursed and Killed, I am now sated too.

I am bloody gutted! Killed is book number five in the Henning Juul series and is the final chapter for Henning, translated by Kari Dickson… Now, Imagine me reading this before all the others! Damn. But, in my defence I did go and buy all the previous four so I can catch up and enjoy this brilliant series and it did read well as a standalone. Phew. Confession over…

WHAT A BLOODY BRILLIANT BOOK! Wow. Amazing. Gripping. Thrilling. Cleverly written. Blew me away. That prologue will have you hooked. The whole story had me hooked. Fast paced, easy to read. You literally won’t want to put this book down. I devoured Killed within 24 hours. A brilliant story to end the series with I have no doubt. A well deserved five stars, I cannot wait to go back to book one and devour this series. Thomas could well be a new favourite author of mine. Extremely impressed and would highly recommend. However, probably best to read them in order first, dont be like me.

Killed is the fifth and final instalment in the Nordic Noir, Henning Juul series, and it’s a bitter sweet moment. Enger has delivered a cracking finale, yet I’m saddened to say goodbye to Henning. Having read this series (with the exception of book 3, which I plan to read), I have grown fonder of Henning as the series progressed and have seen the brilliant portrayal of his character’s development. Now, as this is the last book in the series, you’ll get maximum enjoyment from it if you have read all [or at least some] of the previous books, because you’ll have an understanding of what came before. If you are reading this novel without reading any of the previous ones, Enger provides a character list at the beginning of the novel which will go a long way in helping you understand who’s who during the course of your read.

This novel is a fantastic conclusion to the series; this is the book were everything clicks – all the connections from the previous books align and everything makes sense. And, if you’ve read the previous books, you’ll appreciate what Enger has done, how cleverly he has crafted this series and the mystery of who is responsible for setting the fire that killed Henning’s son. Not only does Killed answer every question and tie up every loose end, in and of itself, it is an engaging read.

Let’s talk about the about the prologue and how it hooks you instantly! From the moment you start this book, you just know it’s one you’re going to enjoy. The prologue is a powerful one that has you instantly gripped and dying to know how these events came to be. And what follows is a well-thought-out course of events, leading to a brilliant ending – and Enger, you had me there, you really had me! (Don’t mind me, I’m just letting Enger know how well his red-herrings worked.)

In this novel, you’ll see families destroyed and being slowly rebuilt, criminals going head to head, people’s desperation to survive being crossed and double crossed, actions that’ll have you holding your breath. But, what you’ll also see is Henning being driven by emotion, and through all the events that take place, you can see that his love for his son is his driving force; it’s this display of emotion that warms you to Henning.

With this being the final instalment, I’m reluctant to reveal any parts of the plot as I don’t want to spoil anything for people starting this series. So, instead, I’ll share a line that is irreverent in the grand scheme of things but made me laugh out loud because my brain loves dark humour:

“The labour had lasted for 42 hours, and the strain and blood loss had left Anita looking like a wan, worn-out heroin addict.”

In all seriousness, Killed was a pleasure to read; it was dark in nature, with just the right amount of action and emotion and I highly recommend it. And, thank you to Kari Dickson for the translation that allowed me to join Henning on his final adventure.

*My thanks to Orenda Books for proving me with a copy of this book*

When I was given the opportunity to be on the Blog Tour for Killed, I was ECSTATIC! Not only have I been wanting to read Enger for quite some time, but we all know Orenda Books puts out some fantastically tantalizing reads so WIN WIN! **snoopy dance**

WHAT A RIDE. Enger pretty much puts you right into the action and never lets up. The prologue sucks you right in! I love it when those first few pages just draw your attention and then the rest of the book never lets it go. (Those people who say they never read prologues... what's wrong with you??)

We get a variety of perspectives throughout this novel but mostly we see Henning - and he's finally getting some answers. The most important being what happened to his son. The side stories are just as tantalizing. We get the full gamut of characters. The criminals are vicious, the family members are emotional and the police are trying to do their job. The way the twists and turns come about and everything comes together at the end - this author has skills, y'all. A bad ass Nordic Noir novel that has you rooting and yelling at the characters all at once.

You ever meet those people who read the end of the book before they even start it? I almost felt like I did that by reading this finale in a series without reading the other books first.... so the only thing keeping me from giving this a full 5 stars is the fact that there are SO many characters and I think it would've had an ever bigger impact had I read the other books in the series. Enger DOES provide a character list at the beginning though, which is EXTREMELY helpful! I encourage everyone to read every book in this series, starting with book one. Because if this ending is any indication, then it's definitely worth it!

Kroz četiri je romana Henning Juul revno obavljao svoj posao istraživačkog novinara, raskrinkavajući zločine i otkrivajući mračne tajne norveškog kriminalističkog podzemlja.

No, do trenutka konačne epifanije puno će se toga još dodatno zakomplicirati.

Such conflicting times these are. On the one hand, being delighted to see the return of Henning Juul and on the other hand, knowing this is the end of the line. It’s sad to see this series come to an end but what a thrilling ride it’s been and I’m delighted to have been a part of this journey.

I accidentally jumped into this series with Cursed, which was book four. When the opportunity to join this blog tour came my way, I was determined to read the other three books first and I’m so glad I managed to do that. There is some amazingly intricate plotting throughout this entire series, which you can only appreciate when you’ve read all the books in order, and to see all the pieces of the puzzle come together was just incredibly exciting. So do yourself a favour and start at the beginning so you too can enjoy the full experience and see the various threads unravel. It’s so worth it!

Killed is an intense and thrilling adventure as Henning Juul continues his search for the truth about the fire at his flat. Will he finally find out who’s been calling the shots? I don’t want to say too much as I’ll be giving away information from the previous books but suffice to say there are a lot questions that still need to be answered. The prologue kicks things off in nail-biting fashion and immediately grabs your attention. Those few pages alone already had me on the edge of my seat and I had to fight the urge to skip to the last page to see what the outcome would be. This fifth and final instalment is a fantastic addition to an utterly brilliant and gripping series. With a strong pace and multiple characters in the mix, I was glued to the pages and couldn’t put the book down.

Watching Henning Juul’s character develop and mature has been an absolute privilege. While it’s of course a shame to see any series come to an end, I will always prefer it being done in this way with a most satisfying conclusion, instead of having it dragged out and end up going nowhere. The ending is fitting, just perfect, and I’m glad the author chose to wrap things up the way he did.

Thomas Enger is responsible for my introduction to the Scandi-Noir genre and for that reason alone, the Henning Juul series will always have a special place in my heart. So all that’s left for me to say is farvel ogg takk. (If I did that correctly, it should say “goodbye and thank you”.)

DNF at 70%. I tried, I really did. Two or three times over the last two or three days I sat down and forced myself to read this for an hour, after the first fifty pages took a long time to get started on. Overall it just didn't feel enough like what I wanted to be reading, however, and I gave it up, unfinished.

I don't particularly like cast/character lists in novels - to me it feels like lazy writing, like an acknowledgement that the book has too many characters to keep track of, and/or the author does not have the ability to properly introduce and also well-define each character. I accept this is part of a series of novels, but being confronted with a cast list in the opening pages I chose to ignore this and crack on with the story, and found the first hundred pages of the story just rammed with far far too many different people, all of whom were described but not anchored to anything else. Lots of tell and not much show in truth.

The plot was in fact decent, and the writing had its moments, but in truth it just felt like a stylish Nordic crime novel where I never really connected with the characters nor cared deeply about the plot. Our investigative journalist protagonist tries to unravel a series of violent attacks possibly linked to preceding threats to him and his family, and there are plenty of conspiracies, corrupt bastards and criminal factions involved. Who cares?

Killed – Gripping Nordic Thriller

Thomas Enger has written the final Henning Juul thriller and once again you will be gripped by this taut and compelling thriller. Killed is an emotional thriller filled with dark secrets, with a gripping narrative that is tense from beginning to end.

Crime reporter Henning Juul thought that his life was over when his son was murdered as a threat to him. As he tries to find the person responsible for the killing of his son, by doing so, he puts his life in danger and of those all around him. The darkness that surrounds him everywhere he goes, also seems to envelop those around him too.

He has worked out that his own sister is involved, somehow, and he needs to work out why, and what caused her to be. With the possibility that people that everyone who needs to contact may be hiding something from him. Who can he trust, or does he put his trust in the wrong people?

Killed is packed with tensions with unexpected twists, so it does not make it easy for the reader to workout who is the paymaster, the person paying the piper. This book will leave you breathless, keep you gripped and really does explode.

Kari Dickson has translated this from the Norwegian and has lost none of that Nordic darkness from the story. Well done Orenda Books.

Thomas Enger took you on a joy ride with this book. Henning Juul was devastated and looking for his son's killer. While his best friend Iver was having a baby with Hennings Ex-wife, Nora. Many people were killed during the story and you have people who have an important part killed. Henning's suspicions go from Ann-Mari Sara, who's Sami decent, to Bjarne Brogland, who's Henning's friend and a policeman. I won't say who's been killed but you'll find out if you read this book.

The ending is a real thriller which has a special ending so I can't tell you this either. I put a special recommendation on this book because of the ending. Read it.

Without giving spoilers, it was so surreal to finally have an ending for Henning’s story. A dark, serious story that leaves no doubt Enger is a master with words.

“It felt like an eternity since he’d been that person. And it had been a long and painful journey. He was exhausted. Damaged. Tired of constant pain, tired of the hunt. But he finally found a peace, inside”. p286

The saga of Henning Juul culminates in ‘Killed’, the fifth and final novel by Thomas Enger in the series that has chronicled the incredible two year journey that Juul was thrust on following the tragic apartment fire that saw the death of his beloved son, Jonas and left him burned and scarred both physically and mentally. Enger has taken us on a journey through Burned, Pierced, Scarred, Cursed and finally Killed as Juul closes the loop on the events that transpired around that fire that came to define his life. It’s a tragic story, bearing all the hallmarks of Nordic Noir that sees the entire quintet of books firmly take its place among Norwegian best.

I really appreciate that Enger took the time in this final novel to explain everything and summarise the first four books succinctly. The plot is somewhat complex in any ways and for someone like me, stretching out my reading of these novels over four years, it was excellent having a summary and list of characters including who and what they were at the beginning of this book. I also liked the prologue that set me on a certain path in my mind as I embarked on this final novel.

Killed takes us to the heart of some of Norway’s crime underbelly that extends over many years, ultimately lining the pockets of the select few through unscrupulous and deadly means. Greed, as always, lies at the heart of this and Enger skilfully weaves all this into a story that may or may not be believable but ultimately that doesn’t matter. It’s a great read and the book finishes this saga really well.

A beautiful touch on the last page is Juul returning to his beloved piano, where he was the night of the fire and has not been able to return. Enger has recorded and provides the SoundCloud link for the most melancholy lullaby that he wrote for Jonas, Juul’s son, written by Juul on the night he found out that Nora was pregnant. Beautiful and poignant and a fitting reflective end to a fantastic series.

Well, I'll start by saying that I am extremely late to the Henning Juul party as I have not read the previous four books. So, I read this book as a standalone, and wow, what a book. I now need to find time to go back and read the previous four books, as I love Henning and I love this writer. I really have found my new Nordic noir fix. This book worked very well as a stand alone, but I do feel that you would probably gain even more enjoyment from the book if you have read the series.

The beginning, oh the beginning is everything a Nordic noir should be. We have tension, we have a boat on the lake (just look at the stunning cover) and we have a murder. But we don't know who. This beginning made me want to read more. I needed to find out what happened in that boat and ultimately who killed Henning 's son.

Now as a newbie to these books there were an awful lot of characters that I was intriduced to. However, there is a list of all major characters at the beginning or the book, which helped me to learn who was who and which helped to bring me up to speed.

This book has everything. It is a fantastic 'who done it', a family drama and underground thriller, all rolled into one. There is so much attention to detail in this bokk, yet this doesn't slow the narrative down, as the pace remsins relentless in Henning's pursuit for the truth.

We then of course have Henning. You can't help but fall in love with this guy. A man who's world has slowly crumbled around him. His son is killed, his wife leaves him and has a baby with his best friend, and he has serious doubts about his sister and if he can trust her. He very much reminded me of the likes of Harry Hole. A flawed individual, but one who has integrity and likeability.

Killed is a fantastic finale to this obviously gripping series. I only wish that I had read the previous books, but I do plan to do so over the summer. If you love your Nordic noir theh you'll love this book.

With thanks to Orenda books and Anne Cater for my review copy and invitation to the blog tour.

I really loved this book, it is dark, gritty, gripping and had me hooked!!

As you read the book you feel as though you are the centre of attention with them, it is fast paced and the plot is so well written it makes it very hard to put the book down. As soon as I started it and read the first few chapters I knew I was in for a real treat.

You go through an awful lot of different emotions reading this book, the suspense used is brilliant and it makes the plot work so well. Every little thing about this book worked for me, right from the cover to the end - it is brilliant!!

No hesitation in giving it 5 stars - an absolutely fantastic end to the series!!

This whole series deserves a rating of 10, it’s absolutely tremendous. Unfortunately it is only a five book series, and sadly I am done. It has been my pleasure to meet and get to know Juul Henning as he solved cases and never ended the search for those behind the death of his son, Jonas.
I will miss reading about Juul and his harrowing adventures, but trust me Juul is one character I will never forget.
Kudos to you, Mr Enger, for an exceptional series.

This was a freebie, and not one I'd normally choose to read, since I've long realised Scandi-crime and me are incompatible. I need to say that the two-star rating indicates my enjoyment of the book, not its merits.

I did very much appreciate the cast list; partly because I am unfamiliar with the characters in the series and partly because it not always obvious, or memorable, who is who or, at times, what sex they are.

And I'm not sure whether it is the maleness of the writer or his nationality that gives the writing of this such a coldly programmed quality, but there seemed to be a superfluity of fighting description and cars.

Firstly, how fab is that cover – the orange set against the grey and black is just wonderful, it is extremely striking and would most definitely capture my interest if I was perusing the book shelves!

Killed is the fifth and final book in the hugely successful Henning Juul series so it was with a heavy heart that I started this book knowing that it was the end – the haunting and disturbing prologue did not help with the trepidation, talk about throwing the reader into the deep end (literally!). I was pleased to find out that Killed was once again translated by Kari Dickson as she did a wonderful job with its predecessor, Cursed, to the point where you actually forget that it wasn’t originally written in English.

Sadly, I haven’t actually read the whole series, I was only introduced to Henning in book four, Cursed however I do think that Killed is certainly best read after Cursed as it picks up not long after the events in Cursed (and I would suggest actually starting the series from scratch as I suspect that the first three books are also great reads!) However, Enger is good at keeping new readers engaged with recapping on the important previous events which is done incredibly well without disengaging existing readers who know!

Henning’s marriage to his ex-wife, Nora, ended after the death of their six-year-old son in a terrible house fire which was set deliberately. Henning has always blamed himself as Jonas was in his care at the time and Henning could not get to him to save his life. In Killed, following on from information obtained in Cursed, Henning is determined to find out once and for all as to who was responsible for his son’s death.

Killed is an absolute gripping read, the prologue just invites you to keep reader to find out what has led Henning to this literal life and death point (and for those readers who skip the prologue, you would be missing an absolute treat here!). It is a complex novel with a number of characters so I found that I needed to slow my reading down to really get to grips with who was on the side of good and who wasn’t – this was pretty impossible though with the unreliable characters and red herrings that Enger throws in…. frankly a cracking read! I couldn’t put this book down and could have quite easily lost most of a day lost in Henning’s world. I really enjoyed seeing the personal side to Henning and how desperate he is for answers as to why his boy was taken away from him – the reader sees an element of this in Cursed but there is also the focus on the investigation into a missing person in that narrative whereas this is focussed on Henning’s pursuit for answers.

Killed is a highly complex Scandinavian crime novel which is intricate in both its own detail as well as the plot lines that are running throughout the series – I was sad to finish this book as I was well aware this was Juul’s last outing. I highly recommend Killed and hope that Enger doesn’t keep us waiting too long for another outstanding series!

A Brilliant Story. I’m so glad that I came across Thomas Enger’s first book ‘Burned’ in 2011, as it was such a good book. He really has done a wonderful job with each book in the series, and it’s one Author that I look out for. The plot is quite tense, and I love the way the story moves around each character. It’s one of those stories that I found myself reading faster and faster as I got towards the end.
Henning Juul couldn’t rest until he found out who was responsible for the fire that had killed his son Jonas. It had been deliberate lit by someone wanting to keep Henning quiet, but they weren’t to know that his son was home that night. Henning is sure that daddy longlegs is involved and most likely the man in charge that gave the order to hurt him, and he was sure that Tore and Charlie had something to do with it, however once again it’s become very dangerous when he starts to dig a bit deeper. With Nora now pregnant and even though it doesn’t belong to him, Henning still worries about keeping her safe. He doesn’t want anyone else he knows to die because of him. Hands down this is a book worth reading. 5/5 Star Rating.

I found this book on the side of the river in Fargo, ND while out on a walk with friends. Thinking it was a drug drop, they kept going but I said “it’s a library book - There’s no way there’s anything nefarious about it!” It was, of course from a library in California, but a library book nonetheless. It turned out to be an extremely fortuitous find! I don’t read murder mysteries, and I’ve never heard of the author or series, but even so, I was gripped! While I didn’t get any of the action from the earlier books in the series, I felt I didn’t need it - I was able to keep up with the action, investigation, and history just fine. I would definitely recommend this to anyone, and would also encourage everyone to check out library books wherever they find them ;)

Dark Norwegian thriller

Killed is the fifth and final book in Thomas Enger’s Henning Juul series – Scandinavian Noir at its best. Each book in the series is standalone (I have only read the last two – Killed and Cursed…) but there is a common theme running through all five.

Henning Juul and Nora Klemetsen (both journalists) used to be married. Nora now lives with Ivor Gundersen, and is about to have his baby. Ivor is also an journalist and a close friend of Henning’s. They collaborate on many an investigation. Henning and Nora had a son, Jonas, who was killed in a deliberately set fire in Henning’s flat in Oslo. The fire was deliberate in the sense that it was set to scare Henning off a story – though the death of Jonas was ‘collateral damage’. The five books cover the tracking down of the person ultimately responsible for the crime. Each book, though, has a subplot in the murky underworld of Oslo. We come across some very unsavoury characters…Henning’s life – and the lives of those close to him – are under constant threat. In Killed the main threat is from Durum Redzepi, an Albanian enforcer and hit man. We know he reports to ‘Daddy Longlegs’ – but who is the ultimate boss – and what does he know about the fire that killed Jonas?

The pace of the book is fast and furious. Dead and mutilated bodies abound,,, And Henning gets ever closer to his aim of unmasking the man behind Jonas’ death. As an investigative journalist he has a good relationship with police, and works alongside them.

Killed also scores in TripFiction location terms. Oslo is well described as are the actual towns of Brandbu and Tønsberg, and the Norwegian countryside – from dark forest to deserted lake.

Killed is a very exciting read. Highly recommended.
