With Ties That Bind: Broken Bonds Book Three

Third novel in the With Ties that Bind trilogy. Final novel in the Broken Bonds series.

To protect the woman he loves, Detective Ethan Quinn defied the law he’s defended and upheld his entire career. He turned his back on his honor and ethics with only one objective in mind: protect Avery at all cost. Now he’s tangled in a web of deceit and corruption, no better than the killer he’s hunting.

As Quinn navigates a treacherous maze, he senses a rat amid his department. He suspects the perpetrator is hiding in plain sight, using their shield within the law to disguise them.

Who is the real Alpha?

Having been framed for murders and crimes they didn’t commit, a suspect is under investigation by not only the ACPD, but the FBI, and lead medical examiner Avery Johnson feels the pressure from all sides as she guards the secrets within her lab. Quinn went to great lengths to save her, to protect her…and now it’s her turn to be the hero for the man she loves.

A showdown is looming, the Alpha is ready to strike. No one is safe as the clock ticks down to the final moments that will test every member of the task force, leaving only one side left standing.

Now this, folks, is the way you end a series! Wolfe has kept the mystery in the forefront and the sex simmering on the fringe. Wholly captivating with spine tingling revelations, With Ties that Bind 3 left me in awe. Wolfe has such a subtle way of leaving clues on the page that has me left feeling as if she is teaching a master class in suspense. So many nuances, so many highlighted pages. Even ‘til the bitter end I was kept guessing and puzzling out who our Alpha’s identity was. Brilliant.

Sorry guys, this will be all the review I can muster for you. That’s the brilliance of a good mystery. You must discover the secrets yourself. No spoilers here.

I have tried multiple times to write this review. Each time, I have hit the delete button, swore like a mother-f@cking sailor and walked away. I simply don’t know how to do justice to this book and to the thoughts and emotions it left me with. GAH!!!!!! Tisha Wolfe does this to me every single fricking time. I swear this woman’s words speak directly to my soul--my dark, dark soul. Just read these words and tell me they don’t make you want to stalk the crap out of Trisha Wolfe.
In a life dominated by control, words are the one thing I allow to be chaotic.
Their beauty, their ever changing quality to always be improved upon--there are no limits to what can be created with an enchanting line of prose. So, I am gifting these lines to you. My only medium in which I can express, can convey, your importance to me.~Alpha

I am just going to pretend that these words were written just for me. *sigh*

My mantra from book one of the Broken Bonds Series, With Visions of Red, has been, “No one does dark like Trisha Wolfe does dark, NO ONE!”, and is even more true now than ever before! Speaking of WVoR, if you haven't read it, STOP right here. It is imperative that you start this series from the very first book. Don’t worry, you will thank me later. Every word, every book, will have you begging for more. WTTB is last in the Broken Bonds Series and I’m still in denial that it’s over.
Everything that begins must have an end.~Alpha

There was a point towards the end of the book, at about 95%, I just had to close my kindle and morn. I wasn’t ready to read THE END. I wasn’t ready to leave this story, these characters, and My Alpha behind. To me, that is more telling than any other words I could write. *sniff-sniff*

With ties that bind starts right after the end of the third book of Sadie' story.

Avery have to face the aftermath of her abduction and the things she did with Sadie. But she is nothing like the profiler. She feels too much. Guilty is eating her alive...
In all this madness, Ethan Quinn, the upright detective, is the only thing that keep her grounded. But will he still love her when he finds the truth?

I loved Avery and how she got stronger at each book. And even Quinn got a piece of my heart at the end, because he was ready to do everything to protect his woman.

The thriller elements were so captivating...
The whole story keeps you on the edge trying to understand who the killer is ...
And damn!! I did not expect the Alpha to be... 🤯🤯🤯🤯

Truth to be told, I felt like the romance part has been sacrificed a bit in order to follow the investigations tho.

In the end Quinn & Avery' trilogy is as amazing as Sadie & Colton' one 🤩🤩🤩
Trisha Wolfe was able to surprise me, and I really enjoyed the journey!

With Ties that Bind by Trisha Wolfe is thriller romance series that is a spin-off and continuation of With Visions of Red. Together they make up the Broken Bonds series. I highly recommend reading WVOR first if you want the best reading experience.

At his best, man is the noblest of all animals; separated from law and justice he is the worst.
Aristotle

I decided to review the series as a whole (books 1-3) rather than individual reviews, as each book is quite short and they are interconnected with cliffhangers in between.

Both of these series made me feel like I stepped right into an episode of Criminal Minds. With Ties that Bind starts off right where WVOR ends, except the focus has shifted to our two new main characters: Dr. Avery Johnson and Detective Ethan Quinn. If you read the previous books, you know these two have much to grapple with in the wake of the events that transpired. Both have had their moral compass shaken up... and now there is a new killer on the loose demanding their attention.

A man obsessed is a dangerous thing. You can’t reason with him. He has no boundaries, no limitations. The whole world could be burning down around him and yet he’d only be conscious of his obsession.

I fell head over heels for both Avery and Quinn. I've read a lot of books by the incredible Trisha Wolfe, and these two characters definitely seem to be the most normal. There is something so wholesome about their connection, even though they are working through very intense issues. Avery is such an incredible character: so strong, resilient and intelligent and I was rooting for her every step of the way. Quinn is an old-school, hardened detective with a rigid moral code. He added so much humour and heart to this story and his devotion to Avery — to support her, protect her and empower her — made me swoon. I need my own Ethan Quinn, stat!

How far will I go down this dark path to protect her?

This series had me gripped! Each book is on the shorter side so it's easy to devour them all in a matter of days... but don't let that fool you into thinking it won't pack a punch. The final book... WOW! Trisha always comes through with strong endings and the final book is insane, clever, calculated, and action-packed. It is the perfect ending to this series as a whole, coming full circle and providing closure for all characters involved.

And the villain.... I think The Alpha is my newest favourite villain! Trisha is a master at holding suspense and twisting my mind into a pretzel; I was suspecting everyone under the sun at one point... and when the final reveal came my jaw dropped. How perfect. How genius!! I can't stop thinking about it.

“Some dark things in this world we can’t unsee. [...] Once it takes root, we only have two choices. Let it consume us, changing us, manipulating us into its likeness, or destroy it.”

While on the surface this is a thrilling story and passionate romance, it's also so much more than that. There is incredible commentary on morality and trauma woven through each book, with careful regard for how women are often perceived in society. There are layers of thoughtful discourse that I feel I could dissect for days on end. But this is the reality of reading a story by Trisha Wolfe.

I read this series by flipping back and forth between my kindle and the audiobook, and I truly loved the audio! The voice actors, Anna Riordan, D.C. Cole and Aaron Landon, are perfect for these characters and they do such a great job bringing them to life. Highly recommend the audio — especially considering all three books are rolled into one purchase.

There are few authors that are as meticulous, brave, and cunning as Wolfe.

"I am not safe."

That's how WTTB3 starts. Unsure, unsafe, unpredictable. I have been waiting with baited breath for the conclusion of the Broken Bonds series and now that it's here I funny know how to feel; am I happy to find out what's going on, or sad to finish my time with Sadie, Colton, Avery, and Quinn? Even after reading, I'm not sure.

"I consider Quinn mine-and I plan to defend him, even against himself."

This is why I love Avery. She is strong, even after near death, even when she doesn't believe herself to be, she is strong. And yet, Wolfe shows us even the strong have their moments:

"I fear the woman Quinn lives is vanishing-the woman he deems to protect may need more protection from herself."

And then there is Quinn...my love. The ferocity of his love for Avery paved the way for him to realize that life is far from black and white, tuft and wrong.

"My mural compass can burn in hell."

If you've gotten through this review so far you deserve the quick and dirty:

Trisha Wolfe is one of the most creative, detailed-without-being-boring, unpredictable authors I've read. This book has sex, but it's more than that. This book has death, but it's more than that, too. This book has a heck of a twist, but, again, that's not all. At it's core, WTTB is a story that shows how far a person will go to protect who they love.

LOVE THIS SERIES!

Broken Bonds: With Ties That Bind

Ethan Quinn and Dr. Avery Johnson
Detective and Lead Medical Examiner.

🚓 Serial Killer
🥼 Trifecta designer drug
🚓 Edging
🥼 Sex Trafficking
🚓 Undercover
🥼 Trauma

This series is phenomenal! The refreshing take on two people supporting and processing what happened in Visions of Red and moving forward. This might have been Trisha's least unhinged couple, but dont worry, the Alpha being the true psycho/narcissistic villain! Holy unhinged!

Poor Avery is a freaking warrior from what she is put through and Quinn for being by her side....behind her....supporting her...with ice 🧊 😏.

It's my favorite scene!!! I loved it! the edging Quinn takes....poor man, but he makes it sexy as hell as he suffers.

Let me break it down quickly. Avery creates something to cope with her trauma and lack of lust. This drug turns into the perfect date drug taken by the kingpin the Alpha, a villain, entwined into the corrupt justice system. Quinn's only goal is to keep Avery safe! The twists, the action, and the deception are fantastic!

This was a great continuation of The Broken Bonds series with Sadie and Colton, making their appearance throughout the series.

You have to read the other five books first! I actually figured out who the Alpha was, during this last installment. Very rare for me... 🤝 This is a dark romance - police, murder, crimes with possible triggers, red herrings and uncomfortable scenes. It is not a standalone.

Six books ago we met 4 people. During those books some forged a tight bond and other bonds were irretrievably broken. BDSM club owner and master at rope bondage Colton Reed and criminal profiler with the Arlington County Police department Sadie Bonds had evil touch their lives which tainted their souls. They took that dark and embraced it and used it to their advantage. Sadie's partner Detective Ethan Quinn and her friend medical examiner Avery Johnson dealt with death in retrospect of their jobs but at the beginning of this journey their souls had yet to be tainted.

That all changed by the end of the first series. Avery had gotten an up close and personal look at evil that scarred her both on the inside and outside. It also made her do unethical things to make sure justice was served. She had no idea that this would put her on the radar another evil serial killer who also sells women.

Ethan Quinn when we met him was a no nonsense straight by the book police detective. He had no idea that two women – one being his partner and the other a romantic interest – would forever change him and make him cross the lines of right and wrong for those he cared about.

Sadie, Quinn, Avery, the police department along with the FBI have been trying to find the Alpha killer (the one who abducted and tortured Avery) . Through out the books we were given the Alpha POV and knew they were sick and twisted. The Alpha was also extremely intelligent and has masted the game of toying with those they perceives as threats and will do anything to get what they wants and the end goal is to get Avery back.  As this is the last book in the series we do finally get to find out who the Alpha killer really is and as this author is famous for it was quite the shocker.

Friendships and partnerships were forever changed by what these four went through and how it defined their future was bittersweet.

This was a great series – especially if you like your romances dark. Cant wait to see what's next from this author.

Trisha Wolfe has *tied* up this series perfectly.

WTTB 3 is a fabulous conclusion to one of the best erotic thrillers I have EVER read. The plot is intelligent, detailed (without droning on and on), and well executed. The characters are smart, cunning, twisted, and so freaking HAWT.

Anyone who follows me knows of my deep affection for Detective Ethan Quinn. He is my favorite BBF. But, like him, I harbor a secret. Are you ready?

I. Love. Avery. She is my favorite h out of every one Trisha has blessed us with. Probably one of my top five heroines ever. To go through what she had and not simply survive, but find a way to thrive is inspirational. She is a woman's woman. A beautifully crafted character that I will cherish forever. C'mon, say it like they do in The Sandlot: for-e-ver.

I'm normally not a fan of stories that pay out over 7 books. My attention span (and memory) sucks and hinders my ability to enjoy them. But this series, the Broken Bonds Series, is one I would be glad to read again and again.

There are no words to describe the genius that is Trisha Wolfe when it comes to this Broken Bonds series...the intricately woven plot, the truly sick and demented mind of the bad guy *winks*, and the very human ensemble of characters, with all their flaws that bring this series to life and make it so believable.

I'm truly sad that I don't have another installment to look forward to, but I have no doubt that wherever this author chooses to venture next I'll be going along for the trip.

As part of the ARC team, I voluntarily read and reviewed this book.

TWolfe has really found her stride with this dark and twisty series. Hmm, what does that say about her? *wink* I've been anxiously awaiting this final installment - to have all my questions answered, to see how it all shakes out and who is left standing. TWolfe did not disappoint. Watching as Quinn tries to protect Avery, as Avery tries to protect Quinn and Sadie, seeing pieces fall into place - it was so exciting I was flipping through the pages as fast as I could. I even stuttered over a familiar name - my own - having forgotten I was making a cameo. And the reveal - damn, TWolfe. You are good! I'd like to say I had it figured out but I'd be lying.

My favorite elements in this installment and the series overall:
~Avery's strength and resilience. I loved seeing her embody the survivor she is and take a stand - fight back!
~Quinn realizing who he really is and what he's capable of. I didn't feel his actions ever compromised his integrity even though he did. I felt his actions proved something most of us will never know about ourselves - what we're willing to do to protect the one we love.
~The profiling/serial killer element. Whatever is says about me, I find it fascinating and TWolfe gave us insight not only into a serial killer but also into those who hunt them.
~The introspection the series sparked - what would I do? How far would I go? What is my breaking point - the line I'd be leery of crossing for fear of becoming a monster? Do we all have a little darkness in us?

This entire series has been riveting. If you like dark romantic suspense with a side of mind f#ck, this series is for you.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I can not believe this series is over. A grand total of seven books over the last two years. I discovered Trisha maybe five years ago through a short story she published. That short story made my top 10 reads that year. Then a couple years later her With Visions of Red series began. I was ecstatic when I was personally invited to her review team. I didn't even think twice about signing up and I am over the moon that I did.

Fast forward to now: the last book in this series is out and I've finished it. I've loved every beautiful, touching, haunting, loving, twisted word. (The twisted parts may have been some of my favorites.) This last books shows how much thought Trisha put into the books and how they tied together. (No pun intended...I think.)

I found myself really liking Quinn even before he and Avery got their own books. The way Trisha described him had me intrigued right away. I have always liked older men. He and Avery had a great relationship that I loved reading about. His determination to protect her and hers to not to be a victim led to some head butting moments between the two. There was also some breaking loose on Quinn's part. Which, I'll admit, was super hot and super enjoyable to read.

The Alpha's POV...I have to admit I loved reading it. Something about getting inside the Alpha's mind...I got excited every time I got to a chapter in the Alpha's POV. I definitely think the identity of the Alpha was a surprise. Here's the bigger surprise. I figured out who the Alpha was. I was proud but also felt like I got a little jipped. Nevertheless, the identity was an awesome reveal. Everything was awesome. I read 70% of the book in one day.

Once I got to the last few lines I found myself tearing up. Not for anything particular except that it was the end. I've come to love these characters. Quinn, Avery, Sadie, Colton, Chase, Alexis, even Carson. I was tearing up simply because it was over. While I am super excited for what Trisha has planned next I will miss these characters dearly. I can feel myself starting to tear up as I finish this review. The With Visions of Red series has a proud place on my bookshelf and when With Ties That Bind is available I know they will, too. I also have an inkling that these will be some of the few books that I actually reread. I give this book 5 stars. Overall, I give the series 5 stars. 6 if I could. If you love dark and twisty, or you're looking to dive in, I highly recommend this!!

Absolutely Amazing!!

Trisha Wolfe is a genius. Pure and simple. There are no other words to adequately describe the mind behind this masterpiece. True to form, she expertly lays out the final installment in the Broken Bonds series. A sexy, electrifying thriller that will grip you tight and hold you spellbound right up until the very end. While I truly enjoyed every book in this series, Trisha really stepped up her game with this one. By far my favorite in the series.

Reading this book was bittersweet for me. Throughout the Broken Bonds series, Trisha has introduced us to some crazy, quirky, lovable and unsuspecting heroes. I loved watching their characters grow and develop as the story progressed. Having them all play such a large part in the final installment was as fulfilling as it was heartbreaking knowing it was almost time to say goodbye.

*****************************************
After the botched sting after the auction, Quinn is determined to protect Avery and catch the real Alpha killer with the help of Sadie and Carson. There are too many questions unanswered. Everyone is a suspect. Will Quinn figure out the truth in time?

Avery finally understands and accepts that she's in danger. But she's no longer willing to accept that she's a victim. And she'll do anything to protect her friends. Anything.

The Alpha wants Avery and he's willing to wait but an unexpected confession has moved up his time table. Choices have to be made and plans set in motion before his identity is revealed.

A five star MUST READ!

I Really loved the conclusion of WTTB 3. What a thrilling read. Yes, we’ve met the ALPHA!! I had to read that part 3 times to check if I am not seeing things. What a shocker, this was so unexpected. This book keeps you on the edge of your seat and will keep you turning pages till the end. I could never guess who the Alpha was. A dark & sexy romance with nail biting, breath taking scenes as Trisha knows best to keep you locked and not put down till you have the answers. You have to read it.

I didn't enjoy this storyline as much as Sadie's. I'm not sure if it was Avery or the fact that the Alpha turned out who it turned out to be. I love Sadie and Quinn and Colton and even Carson. I'm glad that Avery found her strength in the end. I can't wait to read more stories by Trisha. She has this way of making me question my sanity lol...but oh what a ride!

This is the series FINALE, and Trisha Wolfe had me on the edge of my seat the. entire. time.

Alpha's identity was a complete and total mystery to me. And when Alpha's identity was finally revealed...my jaw hit the floor! Was not expecting that at all!! That's all you're getting from me in that regard. You have to read this for yourself to even believe it!

I can not tell you how much I LOVE Trisha's writing. I love how she pulls the reader into the story, makes you feel as though you're right there with the characters. She basically lures the reader in to follow her trail of bread crumbs all the way to the end.

I highly recommend this whole series if you haven't had the chance and the conclusion....well that was something else. Still floored by it!

🐰 I gave everyone one of these a shot thinking maybe the next one would change my mind on detective romances but I can see now that my opinion stands strong.
First Page Nibble:
🐰 "Focus. Concentrate. Ignore everything else." Quinn repositions the black punching pad before me, his gaze unwavering. "Use the pain. Channel it."
I want to roll my eyes. Instead, I drive a swollen, wrapped fist into the pad. "You sound like an after school special. Yes, sir, Mr. Miyagi, sir." My fist sticks the pad again, and I wince.

Absolutely captivating and thrilling! My mind was spinning with all the possibilities of who the Alpha could be. It was nearly killing me how suspenseful this story was and how the author kept me in the dark until the final reveal. The unknown had me captivated and I really wanted to flip to the end of the book to finally know who the alpha was.
I'm still in awe by how cunning and malicious the alpha was. I felt like the monster was playing a mind game with me.

Detective Quinn was my anchor and his clever way of thinking was brilliant. I loved how he lost himself in Avery and I absolutely loved to see a new side of him. Oh my, he was like a wild animal, a beast. Who would have thought a side like this existed?! Not me, that’s for sure, but that made it even more fantastic.
Quinn reached a point where he suspected everyone and didn't trust anyone, that’s how I felt too. This must have been so hard for him because having no one to rely on in such a situation would drive me insane. So, you better be prepared for this suspenseful rollercoaster.
'Paranoia eats away my senses, dulling my instinct. My logic is defunct.'

I loved how Quinn and Sadie's friendship was brought into this story because I felt that they had unresolved business left from her story. Though I wondered why her profiler skills weren’t brought in to help catch the bad guy, but I get that it wasn't her story. It's just that this seemed like an even bigger thing than the Arlington case and every help would have gotten them closer to the truth. Maybe even sooner. But okay. I get it. The story would have been done quicker and much different with Sadie more involved.

Anyway, I loved how the series wrapped up and it’s with a laughing and a crying eye for me to see them go. Especially since I just took a liking to a certain character. Maybe he’ll get a story too?! I can only hope.

Avery and Quinn

Throughout this trilogy, the battle against evil has raged. For Quinn, it's fear that he will lose those he cares about most. For Avery it's fear of losing Quinn because of what she's done. As the police and FBI try to put the puzzle together, Quinn realizes it all goes back to a case two years earlier when he didn't listen to his new behavioral analyst, Sadie. More recently, Sadie struck again and Avery helped cover the crime. Now, the one they call "The Alpha", the head of the snake, seems to know every detail of what they've done. And the Alpha wants Avery. Again.
This book brings the chase to a dramatic conclusion, and those involved will never be the same. I'm in awe of the skill and depth of understanding that Trisha Wolfe brings to her writing. I've become a huge fan.

A conclusion that ties itself up a little too nicely- after briefly going off the rails

Detective Ethan Quinn is in too deep, and in spite of the law he’s defended and upheld his entire career- his primary focus is protecting Avery at all costs. It becomes clear that there's a rat in his department. And an investigation by the ACPD and the FBI, has Avery Johnson feeling the pressure from all sides. I honestly started to get Princess Toadstool vibes, because despite being caught in a cycle of guilt and paranoia, somehow she gets snatched - again! - and time is of the essence to save her and put an end to it all.
If you like psycho-sexual thrillers and you want something with a heavy late 90's vibe- this is the book for you.

I'm not sure why, but I started to get bored near the end. There are plenty of interesting twists, but it's almost too much waiting? Also, there's all this time spent with the MC's thoughts that just seems repetitive. Avery's state of mind matters, but I got a little tired of her worrying about what Quinn was going through. Quinn's thoughts are both interesting as he deals with his convictions, *and* repetitive.
So I guess I'm saying it was good, but needed pairing down. Like, just catch the bad guy already.

Medical examiner Avery is still in danger. That liquid aphrodisiac she created made it into dangerous hands. Her once safe haven of working in the lab is once again a place of fear. l

Quinn wants to protect Avery while she wants to defend him. Together they break protocol in order to save the other. Wolfe gives readers an intoxicating fast pace action thriller. This read like an episode of CSI. This was a high energy thriller from beginning to end.

The pressure is now off Lauren Gillet to write more Dartmoor stuff because I’ve finally found me a new author.

A solid ending to a very good series! I really loved getting to know Avery and Quinn. I felt this book got a tiny bit convoluted and I wanted a bit more of the romance, but overall it was another really good instalment by Trisha Wolfe!

I will NEVER tire of reading Trisha Wolfe! I forgot to log this on here, but I know this entire series is absolute FIRE! I think I will start it again, from the beginning, because, it's that damn good!

She knows how to bring the STEAM and the story, and weave it together perfectly!!

Quinn and Avery’s story was missing some of the chemistry and angst that made Sadie and Colton’s story so satisfying for me. I did enjoy this a lot, but forewarning that this felt more like a police procedural/thriller rather than a romance. I’ve come to expect Trisha Wolfe books to be super psychological and a bit kinky, with a spotlight on a slightly depraved MMC. This was definitely lacking any sort of kink, and Quinn is a pretty straightforward leading man. Again, I did really enjoy it, it was just not at all what I had expected from this author.
