Losing London is an epic love story filled with nail-biting suspense, forbidden passion, and unexpected heartbreak. When cancer took the life of Mitch Quinn’s soulmate, London Adams, he never imagined that one year later her sister, Harper, whom he had never met before, would show up in Emerald Isle, NC. Until this point, his only reason to live, a five-year-old cancer survivor named Hannah, was his closest tie to London.Harper, recently divorced, never imagined that work—a research project on recent shark attacks—and an unexpected package from London would take her back to the island town where her family had vacationed in her youth. Upon her arrival, she meets and is instantly swept off her feet by a local with a hidden connection that eventually causes her to question the boundaries of love.As Mitch’s and Harper’s lives intertwine, they discover secrets that should have never happened. If either had known that losing London would have connected their lives in the way that it did, they might have chosen different paths.
Joey Jones’s writing style is described as a mixture of Nicholas Sparks, Richard Paul Evans, and James Patterson. New York Times Bestselling Author Kristy Woodson Harvey labels Jones’s writing as “lyrical” and proclaims, “He effortlessly pulls readers into the souls of his characters.” USA Today Bestselling Author Jeff Gunhus compares Joey Jones’s work to Debbie Macomber, Nicholas Evans, and Sparks.
The ratings and reviews of Jones’s novels A BRIDGE APART (2015), LOSING LONDON (2016), A FIELD OF FIREFLIES (2018), THE DATE NIGHT JAR (2019), WHEN THE RIVERS RISE (2020), WHERE THE RAINBOW FALLS (2022), and ALONG THE DUSTY ROAD (2023) reflect the comparison to the aforementioned New York Times bestselling authors. Readers can expect the same from THE ROOTS BENEATH US (2024).
Joey Jones fell in love with creative writing at a young age and, in his early twenties, decided to write a book. His debut novel A BRIDGE APART is a suspenseful love story that was years in the making as he tinkered with the manuscript off and on while working full-time in the marketing field. In February 2016, Jones became a full-time novelist and published his second novel LOSING LONDON later that year. The average rating of Jones’s novels is 4.5 out of 5.0 stars.
In his spare time, Joey enjoys spending time with his family, playing sports, working out, reading, and embarking on new adventures. His favorite meal is a New York Style Pizza with sweet tea. He won the 8th-grade spelling bee at his school, but if you ask how many students participated, he might say, “Such minor details are not important!” He currently lives in North Carolina with his family.
Joey Jones earned a B.A. in Business Administration from the University of Maryland University College where he graduated with honors (2006). He was the owner of a full-service advertising agency and taught business and marketing courses as an adjunct college instructor.

Losing London is Joey Jones’ second book. I had the pleasure of receiving a free copy of his first book A Bridge Apart and offering some of my constructive criticism. This was before I ever thought about starting my blog, but you can see the review I left on Goodreads here.
A Bridge Apart was so good for a debut novel, that I had NO DOUBTS his second book would be anything less than amazing. What I was not expecting was the PURE PERFECTION that was Losing London. Now I’m sitting here thinking to myself “How in the world is he going to top this?” Although, I have no doubts that he will. I’m already anxiously awaiting his 3rd novel and don’t even know if he’s starting writing it yet.
One more side note first. I seriously love that Jones is a Southern author and he has Southern phrases thrown into his stories. In this one he used the saying HAUL BOOGIE and I swear to you I have never seen that phrase in a book before. I LOVED IT!
Now on to the nitty gritty details.
When I first began reading this story and realized exactly who London was in relation to the other characters in the book, it was not what I was expecting and that left me completely confused about where Jones was going with it. I should have never doubted him for a second. PURE GENIUS that Joey Jones is!
I was completely captivated by absolutely everything in the book. I’m not even exaggerating here.
I want to start by talking about Mitch. This man is completely swoon worthy, but I was uneasy about him in the beginning. He completely won me over in the scene where he is sitting outside, playing his guitar, and singing one of the most heart felt songs ever.
” I dont wanna close my eyes. I don’t wanna fall asleep cuz I’ll miss ya baby and I don’t wanna miss a thing!“
Oh Mitch! *swoon*
Mitch is seriously an amazing man. Him adopting Hannah, just says everything you need to know about him. Add that to the fact that he is GOALS for the man you would choose to spend the rest of your life with and you have the most EPIC SWOON WORTHY MAN EVER!
Ok, enough about how amazing Mitch is.
Harper aka Addison (depending on where you are in the story) is the female main in this story and I feel a very special connection to her. As her situation turns out to be something I have experienced also, I cant help but sympathize with her. What won me over to her was the fact that we both let a man change the simple things about us without ever realizing they were doing. For instance, Harper’s husband controlled even the smallest things about her. She wasn’t even allowed to drink the rest of the milk left in the bowl after eating cereal because her husband didn’t like it. And that’s just one example. It’s so easy to lose yourself in this way and I know first hand.
Harper does prove to be frustrating at times. Especially when she realizes the truth and refuses to let Mitch know who she is to London. So of course I was patiently awaiting the fall out from this secret. But I never expected it to happen the way it did. The fallout between Harper and Mitch was completely heart shattering and I wasn’t quit sure how I would recover from it. I was literally screaming at the book at this point because I wanted to know when people (Harper) would learn that lies are the worst possible thing in a budding relationship. But it seems to be an ever present theme in romance novels. I mean, honestly people! Goodness, its not that hard!
Harper also broke my heart when she said that a girl is LUCKY to find a man like Mitch after the age of 25. That means my time is running out! Oh Romeo (Mitch) where are you?! LOL
A year after London’s passing, Harper receives a book that London had written. It was the story of her last memories before her death. Harper spends time reading through these memories, but the last chapter of London’s book literally brought me to tears. All I could think was that what it revealed couldn’t be true! It just couldn’t.
Another very important character in this story is Hannah. I did mention her briefly above, but now is her time to shine! The things this child says either crack me up or breaks my heart (as children seem to do). She is so pure and innocent. Just to give you an idea of how attached I became to her, these are some of the things that melted my heart, for good or for bad.
“Would it make you mad if I told you I cry because you have to sleep alone“
“Awe! When I get a new mommy, I’ll let her sleep with you“
Kids seriously do say the darnedest things!
BOMBS. BOMBS. BOMBS.
That sums up this whole book in 1 word (well 3 because I didn’t feel like saying it once would suffice).
First bomb, I wanted to cry from pure happiness!
Second bomb, I was like “OH NO, NOT AGAIN!” because I know the feeling that Harper was going through.
Third bomb, I was back to wanting to cry from pure happiness! At this point I was getting all the mushy gushy feels and I just KNEW this was going to have the perfect ending. I was stupidly grinning as I was reading how everything was unfolding. BOY WAS I FOOLED! This feeling was ruined in all of .6 milliseconds!
Just when I thought Jones was done with the bombs, he dropped about 6 more! (almost literally)
AND I spent the last 10 minutes of the book ugly crying into my iPad. Tears were literally streaming down my face as I was screaming at the book.
This is one of the BEST books I have read all year! You are not going to want to miss out on this! I promise!
I picked up an autographed copy of this book on a cruise I was on this past week. He was kind enough to leave a copy in the ships library. Lets just say, I haven’t finished a fictional book in my adult life, and I finished this in TWO days. It had all the components of a love story, but it was also very suspenseful and I found myself turning page after page without realizing time was passing. This book turned me from a strictly non-fiction reader, to a fiction AND non-fiction reader. Purchasing his first novel as soon as I press the submit button!
Cancer patient London Adams left her footprint on the hearts of many during her 27 years on Earth. After her death, she was surprisingly still intertwined in the lives of those closest to her in unimaginable ways. This is a story of a great love, and also of finding love again after tremendous loss. My favorite character in the book was Mitch, the love of London’s life. He took a risk by allowing himself to fall in love with a dying woman, but his passion and commitment to her during her final months of life was endearing. I feel that there were two leading ladies in this novel, because as much as the story was about life after London’s death and how her sister Harper and Mitch move on, London was still a vital and active part of the plot. I also loved Hannah’s sweet character. This love story came with a touch of suspense and heartbreak. The twist at the end still has me lamented.
This was my first Joey Jones book and I was satisfied with the plot and characters. While I feel that I didn’t connect to these characters as strongly as I have in some other books I’ve read, I was invested in them enough to enjoy reading the book and to feel sad when intended. Mr. Jones is a descriptive writer, so I had no trouble getting lost in the surroundings. I think I even tasted the salt air on my lips at one point. I had just returned from vacation on the Crystal Coast (during the week of the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament, ironically) when I dove into this book, so it felt nice to return to the island, even if only in my mind. I had purchased my signed copy of the book from Mr. Jones at the BBQ Fest on the Neuse in Kinston and hadn’t had time to start reading it immediately. Once I did, I found it hard to put down.
I did not notice any grammatical errors as I was reading, which is a pet peeve of mine, so that was great. This story was easy to follow and had me on a roller coaster of emotions throughout. There were times I literally laughed out loud, and other times when tears welled up in my eyes. Overall, it is a book that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys love stories that are set in North Carolina. As a Nicholas Sparks fan, I was pleased to find some similarities between this work and his, as well as some differences. I look forward to reading other works by Joey Jones.
I won this book in a Goodreads Giveaway a few years ago.
The fact that it took me so long to read hurts my heart because this is the best book I've read in years!
If you are a fan of romance, a fan of Nicholas Sparks, you will absolutely love this book. I dare to say that I think that Joey's writing is even more magical.
Mitch and Harper are at the top of my favorite couples list. Not only is the story beautiful, but the way Joey tells the story is absolutely magical. Also, the fact that this book did have twists I didn't see coming made it that much better. Especially since I'm not that interested in romance novels in general anymore because they all seem the same. Sure, this book follows familiar territory, but I was completely lost in this story.
You won't be disappointed with this story if you love romance. I'll be ambitious and say that I also think this book would be in your favorites list.
P.S. Thank you, Joey, for the handwritten note within my book. This story will be something I pass on to anyone I can and will hold a special place in my heart forever.
I was skeptical about this book at first because I had never heard of the author. However, since it was set in Emerald Isle, NC, my second favorite place in the world (home is first!), I gave it a chance.
From the first page to the last, I was engaged in the story and stayed up late to see what would happen next. So many plot twists! Yes, much of the story is perhaps unrealistic, but sometimes the truth really is stranger than fiction. The characters are so endearing that the lapses in reality didn’t matter too much. While the main plot is a love story set at the beach (Yay!), the subplots about cancer, adoption, and estranged family added substance and suspense.
Mitch Quinn might be too good to be true, but he is a character readers can root for, and to me, that is an important component of a book.
But the last chapter - Can we get a rewrite? I just didn’t want the story to end that way.
Absolutely LOVE anything Joey Jones! I picked this book up recently along with his newest (Along the Dusty Road). I’ve read 3 of his books so far and I asked him personally which one that he would read next. He chose Losing London. He has always been so personable at events and he responds relatively quickly online as well. This book did not disappoint - well, I was a little disappointed at the ending. LOL! I love the way he portrays the romance stories in his novels - it keeps you reeled in and not wanting to put the book down. Definitely a tear jerker. The ending was not what I wanted, but it wouldn’t have been a Joey Jones masterpiece if it ended the way we all thought it would! Great read and great work!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's my first read from the author's three books. I enjoyed that the setting is where I live, which allowed me to picture the characters in real places that I know and love.
There was a bit of mystery as we learn about the characters, and a bit of suspense waiting to see what would happen with the main characters and also others in the story. I was laughing in the first chapter and shedding a tear a few pages later. I liked the emotional highs and lows that occurred throughout the book. It made the characters feel real, and drew me into caring about what would happen to them.
I knew before reading the book it was going to be about grief and losing someone. I was hesitant to read it wanting a happy, sappy love story. What I found was even better. It is all above and more.
I am in awe of how amazing this novel is. Yes, there is sadness, but so much love written to overcome the sad parts. The novel has plenty of mystery for men to enjoy as well. Plus, be able to learn some things about other men and feelings.
I have to say this is my favorite book so far this year. I read hundreds of books a year, and I just found Joey Jones books in a local bookstore.
I read the first chapter of this book because it was included at the end of the author's first book and it intrigued me to read more. This was another love story with predictable conflict but the twists the author added, made this book very interesting. I acutally finished Losing London as Hurricane Florence was pounding Emerald Isle (the setting for this book). While I really enjoyed the character development, I did not like how this book ended. In order not to include spoilers, I will just say that I think this story would have been more memorable if the outcome was different.
I found the book my cruise to Cozumel Mexico, it truly was a gift. Thank you Joey! I couldn't put the book down and read it in 5 days! The story pulled you in and made you feel like you were part of the plot. Many tears and laughter, throughout the book. Only downfall I would say, was the ending, I would have ended it differently. It still didn't change how I felt about the book, it was a MUST read. I will be buying the book for my good friend that was on the cruise with me. I don't want to give my signed copy :)
This book was amazing. Joey Jones first book was really good, but this book was so captivating. I thought the first book “a bridge apart” was so good and he outdid himself with this amazing heart wrenching novel. I am so impressed by his talent and fell in love with the characters of the story and could not put it down till I was done! I recommend this book to everyone and it is definitely one of my top five books I have ever read now
This was one of those books that I didn't want to keep reading because I knew it would be over soon! It only took me one day to read it and cried my eyes out. Don't look for HEA here that is why I took one star off!! I will not give any spoilers, just be prepared for a beautiful story about finding love twice in a lifetime and many twists, turns and cuts right to the heart!!!!
Lovely story in the romantic comedy sense with soen twists, turns and a bit of suspense for good measure. Engaging characters and a fast moving plot make this a nice read. My only criticism would be the end felt a tad hurried but was still excellent. My first Joey Jones novel was a gift from my employer and has led me to seek out and purchase the full collection. Each book proves better than the last.
This story ignited every emotion and left me holding onto every word. It affirms that the truest love goes beyond the body. The twists and turns of how characters are brought together shows how life doesn't always go as planned, but that beauty can be found even amongst the most tragic of circumstances. This is a must read!
I’m trying to figure out how to write a review without spoiling the ending. Let’s just say that this is a beautiful love story! Just the right amount of romance, heartbreak, tragedy and suspense. Not necessarily in that order. 2 huge plot twist fueled an emotional journey. I’ve read several Joey Jones novels, and this was one of my favorites!
This is the first review I have ever written on Goodreads. I wanted to like the book, but I just couldn't get past the depictions of first, childhood cancer, having lived it with my own child. And then the plot point of Mitch's cancer going from incurable to completely gone with no treatment whatsoever was completely ridiculous. That did not actually happen unless it's a misdiagnosis.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I would really love to write a SCATHING review about how much I dislike this book, but I don’t want to be mean. Just know that I threw this book across the room (something I literally have never done before) and I just raged to my husband for about 15 minutes telling him the plot of the story and how much rage I feel about the ending.
Even though this book ripped my heart out, it was such a beautiful story. Not every story has the happy ending we assume that it should. The characters develop in their own way and a new happy ending is delivered to us. Definitely not your typical “romantic” love story, there were some gut punches that I did not see coming which is why I think I loved it so much.
This book was even better than "A Bridge Apart"! Suspenseful and beautifully written. You'll laugh, cry, and want to visit the Crystal Coast! If you aren't sure, I say go ahead and read it!
Currently bawling. This was a BEAUTIFUL book. I had a very hard time putting it down. I suggest everyone read this book. It is full of love, heartbreak, and happiness. I cant wait to see what else Joey publishes.
I have to say this was my favorite book that I've read by the author. Enjoyed the characters and their stories which drew me in. Totally was not expecting the ending but that made me like this book even more. It was definitely hard to put this book down.
As usual Joey draws you into the story from the beginning. I was hooked immediately. I loved the "memoirs" book. That was very creative. I am sad at the ending. But I get it and why it happened. I highly recommend any book by Joey Jones!
Loved the characters and the story. Keep the Kleenex handy! I truly enjoyed every chapter, except the last few. Love hurts! I have enjoyed all the novels written by Joey Jones, living in eastern NC makes them extra special.
Really enjoyed this book. It made me laugh, cry, smile, get angry. I definitely wasn't expecting the ending. Joey Jones is a very talented writer, and he certainly doesn't disappoint. I am looking forward to reading another one of his books.
