The Right Of Way

Rate this book
All Sierra wants to do is to find a good job after graduating with her MBA, pay off her student loans and live a normal life. From extreme frugality to dysfunctional jobs that take her from Washington, DC to Houston to San Francisco, Sierra remains optimistic that she can achieve financial stability by working hard. After getting fired from a tech startup in San Francisco, she begins to realize the power to control her life is in her own hands. The Right Of Way offers a dryly funny and thought-provoking look at student debt and modern values from the perspective of a millennial woman.

Couldn’t put it down

Nice quick read about the troubles one faces after graduating with college debt and navigating the weird culture of work in America.

A Decent Read

I thought this was an interesting, tho light read about a young woman trying to establish herself out in the world. Though I am much older, I could identify with her struggles to find financial security and rewarding work. Not a heavy duty read, by any stretch but written in a believable way.

L.B. Lewis provides an interesting perspective on what it’s like to be a millennial breaking into the workforce, and the tough steps that are taken in order to find balance in one’s own destiny. While I’m not a millennial, I could completely relate to Sierra’s journey, in trying to find that one job that will fulfill all the boxes, that will end up being a long-term career. I can also understand the frustration in doing “everything right”, but nothing matches up to the expectation. Having gone to school and graduating with her MBA, you would think there would be more of an opportunity for Sierra, but that hasn’t been the case. I’ve heard the same story from others who are in similar shoes. It speaks volumes on current employment issues many of us face.

The various jobs she find herself in, in order to survive, showcases a lot of guts and determination on Sierra’s part. It would be very easy for her to throw in the towel and admit defeat, but her drive for perseverance is inspiring. The firing in San Francisco starts a chain reaction that bleeds into her other choices of employment, stories that were funny and touch on a few of my own personal experiences from back in the day.

I would have liked to see more from the ending of The Right Of Way. I felt it was a bit rushed and didn’t transition the reader into learning more about what Sierra decides to do with her life, and with her potential career opportunities. She’s made a decision, but it would have been nice to see more movement out of it. I’m hopeful A Minor Detour, the second book in this three part series will further describe and set into motion Sierra’s plans. The ending aside, overall I did enjoy The Right of Way, and I’m interested in seeing what happens next for Sierra.

The Right of Way is a relatable and authentic story about post-grad life for the millennial generation. Like the main character, Sierra, many of us did everything 'right': we got the degree, sent out our resumes, went on interviews, worked hard...and yet the result was still months or years of un- or under-employment. Repaying student loans is another huge issue for the millennial generation, and Sierra, with her super-frugal lifestyle and determination to make her payments, gives them a voice. Lots of millennial readers will see themselves reflected in this new book from L.B. Lewis. Good thing it's the first in a trilogy--I can't wait for the sequel!

First world problems are still problems, and Lewis does a great job of capturing some of the insanity that those who slip through the cracks of the educational elite face. Refreshing to see that addressed. Sierra's story is darkly/dryly funny; I'd have found the character more relatable had she been less in control of her emotions at all times or more open to sharing them with me, the reader. That said, the plot carries Sierra's distance; I finished the book in one sitting.

RIGHT OF WAY ends on a great cliffhanger; I can't wait for the sequel.

A fun, light and breezy read. Very easy to relate to if you have ever been involved in the shenanigans of corporate America. Many moments that were at one and the same time funny and poignant. Curious to see how Sierra's next adventure plays out.
