Still Moving: How to Lead Mindful Change

Rate this book
STILL MOVING Still Moving: How to Lead Mindful Change sets out an innovative approach for guiding organisations and indeed entire systems through ongoing, disruptive change. It combines Deborah Rowland’s own rigorous research into change and its leadership with insights from her extensive field experience helping major global corporations including GlaxoSmithKline, RWE and Shell achieve lasting change with increased productivity, employee engagement and responsible societal impact. It is filled with helpful inspiring stories of leadership and change from the real world and, bravely, the author’s own personal journey. Challenging leaders to cultivate both their inner and outer skills necessary for success, Still Moving weaves together the ‘being’ and ‘doing’ states of leading change and emphasises the importance of a mindful stance and deep systemic perception within a leader. With the goal of collaborative, sustainable change, the book delves into a variety of important topics, including present-moment awareness, intentional response, edge and tension and emergent change. Compelling and provocative, Still Moving questions the conventional wisdom of much change theory and asks that leaders first work on their inner source in order to more effortlessly change the world around them.

I was invited to attend the launch of this book (and the book was provided to all attendees free of charge - just to be upfront with you). In essence, it is an invitation to explore a practising a different kind of leadership from that which we are used to - less top-down and more fit for purpose in our volatile and uncertain world. Rowland shares a number of stories about business change and business leaders throughout the book to illustrate the various principles and practices but I think that they can actually be applied in many areas of life. As I finished each chapter and its stories, I felt quite reflective - this is definitely a book that will go back onto the bookshelf for continued revisiting.

Loved the mindfulness portion of the book and all the great suggestions and examples provides by the author. It felt a bit college essay like for me in how some topics were presented. Some themes were a bit lengthy and repetitive, hence why its 3 stars from me. Overall great insight and a quick enlightening read for making changes, starting with the self.

This is a great book to help you put mindfulness into your workplace or even a new career.. Keys are to approach "change" with curiosity and not fear. So when you are getting laid off, Ms. Rowland would tell you to work through the fear and acknowledge it from a nonjudgemental place. Another hint is not to be afraid of uncertainly and trying out new things so to bring about positive change and move beyond autopilot. The key here is to fearlessly and deliberately chose a different path from the nor. The biggest problem I found is that while she wants us to be fearless, the issue is anxiety and dealing with that. She really doesn't address that emotional problem but instead tells you that you have to remain centered and calm because "if you lose touch with your inner stillness" you've lost so the key is always to be peaceful and still. I think prayer or meditation is her solution though she does not explicitly state that though she uses "exercise" metaphors to make the same point -- exercise properly done is a meditative / prayerful state. But in the end, she wants you to get out of your comfort zone and be comfortable as she says with "discomfort".

It is not particularly well written, but the keys are basically Christian and can be used throughout your life.

Great leadership style! I like the combination of mindfulness and leadership to manage big change in companies. The principles are shown with examples of her studies and workshops.
