Fred Van Lente is the New York Times-bestselling author of comics as varied as Archer & Armstrong (Harvey Award nominee, Best Series), Taskmaster, MODOK's 11, Amazing Spider-Man, Conan the Avenger, Weird Detective, and Cowboys & Aliens (upon which the 2011 movie was based), as well as the novels Ten Dead Comedians and The Con Artist.

Van Lente also specializes in entertaining readers with offbeat histories with the help of his incredibly talented artists. He has written the multiple-award winning Action Philosophers!, The Comic Book History of Comics, Action Presidents! (all drawn by Ryan Dunlavey), and The Comic Book Story of Basketball with Joe Cooper (Ten Speed September 2020).

Templars Vol 1: Black Cross takes place in 1927, China and it follows Darius Gift as he arrives in Shanghai on a mission for the Templars after his father is murdered.

We also meet Black Cross a Templar enforcer that works from the shadows and is a myth amongst other Templars who fear him.

This title is very different from the side series Assassins and it establishes itself as a noir shadowy mystery, the art also helps set that tone and it does it's job perfectly.

I found it engaging and I was very interested to learn more about the Black Cross. It sets up the next volume nicely.

Both fans of assassin's creed and casuals can enjoy this but it would be ideal to know something about this world.

This is interesting because it's told from the Templars view explaining their purpose and philosophy at the end of the book. It declares that the Templars are the order that will save humanity. It had a POC main character. I always enjoy seeing how these comics bring real historical events into the story, in this case, it is Chiang Kai Shek coming to Shanghai and the bloody purge of communist sympathizers he carried out there.

Орден тамплієрів з давніх-давен славиться як таємнича спільнота воїнів-монахів, котра раптово припинила своє існування, але насправді все ще керує світом, або ж впливає на панівні кола. Заснований у Єрусалимському королівстві під покровом Бернарда Клервоського і керівництвом Гуго де Пейна молодий орден був на стільки бідним, що на його емблемі зображено двох лицарів на одному коні. Вже згодом, в наслідок численних вдалих походів та започаткованої фінансової діяльності, Орден Лицарів Храму (від лат. Templum – храм) здобув численні статки та великі земельні уділи не тільки на території Святої Землі, але й у Європі. Звісно, що це багато кому не сподобалося і врешті, Філіп Красивий, котрий хотів загарбати багатства братства, під проводом “єретизму” почав знищувати орден. Під катуванням лицарі-монахи, ніби то признались в страшних гріхах – під час посвячення потрібно було відректися від Ісуса і плювати на розп’яття, цілувати старших братів у причинні місця, поклонятися ідолові Бафомета і практикувати гомосексуальний секс. Останній Великий Магістр Ордену Жак де Молле, відмовився визнавати єретизм і покаятися в гріхах, тому його було спалено живцем у 1314 році. 

Далі орден зникає з політичної карти світу, але зараз в багатьох книгах, фільмах і статтях можна знайти теорії про стосунок тамплієрів до створення Братства Розенкрейцерів, Масонів та інших таємних організацій.


В багатьох таємних спільнотах використовуються титули зі згадкою лицарів храму, різні езотеричні угрупування теж вважають себе наступниками мудрості тамплієрів. Відрізнити правду від брехні часто майже неможливо, але очевидно те, що творці світу Креда Асасина вибрали як майданчик для дій теорію Світового Панування, ба навіть протистояння двох таємних організацій – Тамплієрів та Асасинів. У других, між іншим, теж носик в пушку, адже вони більше відомі, як секта ісмаїлітів-головорізів, котра контролюється Старим із Гір, таким собі Хассаном ібн Саббахом. Насправді ці дві організації ніколи не могли контактувати, адже асасини старші за тамплієрів на дві сотні років. З усім тим, сюжет серії комп’ютерних ігор та коміксів все ще має певний стосунок до реальності, адже саме зараз в Епоху Споживання воюють між собою різноманітні корпорації і методи їх не завжди законні й моральні.


Комікс “Тамплієри. Чорний хрест” цікавий перш за все тим, що двоє головних героїв у ньому це тамплієри. Першого звати Дарій Ґіфт і він ще зовсім зелений студент, член найнижчого градуса в Лондонській ложі ордену. Його батько свого часу посідав місце Великого Магістра, але через зажерливість та корумпованість був усунений.


Тепер Дарій має відновити репутацію свого роду, здійснивши небезпечну місію.


Загалом «Тамплієри» сподобалися мені своєю ідеєю поглянути на протистояння асасинів та тамплієрів зовсім під іншим кутом – з точки зору Ордену, якого ми ніби як звикли ненавидіти. Тобто ми, гравці та фанати франшизи, роками грали за асасинів, проникалися їхньою філософією та занурювалися у їхню одвічну війну з тамплієрами, але саме в коміксі нам дали побачити та почути альтернативний погляд трохи глибше, ніж раніше. Це дуже класно, коли автори поглиблюють конфлікт і не зводять його до бійки хороших і поганих хлопців. Вибудовують боротьбу ідей та філософій.

До того ж мені прийшлася до смаку ідея з введенням у лор Чорного Хреста – такого собі таємного агента дисципліни, прокурора, судді та ката, який викорінює всяку зраду з Ордену й перетворився на справжню лякалку серед тамплієрів. І робить це він методами, які більше нагадують одинаків-асасинів, ніж тамплієрів. Це освіжає всесвіт, вносить цікаві можливості тому мені дуже шкода, що у іграх серії до цієї концепції не поверталися, хоча ідея справді крута.

Шанхай, Квітень 1927 року, генералісимус Чан Кайші от-от прибере до рук владу в Китаї. На вулицях панує хаос і непевність, в місті орудують численні банди, а молодий Ґіфт з’являється з таємничою скринькою – посилкою від Великої Англійської Ложі, котру він має передати в руки самому генералісимусу. 


В перший же день його обкрадає танцівниця, котра називає себе Жу. Невдаха вибігає за нею на двір і натрапляє на двох головорізів. За мить до смерті, його рятує таємничий незнайомець. Одягнутий в чорний одяг, він справжнісінька машина для вбивства, таких в організації називають “Чорними Хрестами” – це елітні убивці-одинаки, котрі здійснюють для ордену найважчі місії. Пікантності зустрічі цих двох надає той факт, що саме Чорний Хрест убив Тадея Ґіфта. Керуючись чи то докорами сумління, а чи простою симпатією, Чорний Хрест вирішує допомогти молодому Ґіфту повернути скриньку, доставити її куди потрібно і відновити чесне ім’я свого роду.


Ось така коротка зав’язка історії, а далі – значно цікавіше. На сцені з’являється тріада “Зелена банда” з босом “Вухатим” Ду Юешенем, члени Шанхайської ложі ордену, жінка загиблого Сунь Ятсена і звісно, наші добрі друзі асасини. Все це намальовано і виписано в стилі нуарного бойовика, читаючи, наче чуєш джазові акорди (Чорний Хрест під прикриттям відпрацьовує саксофоністом), майже всі постійно курять, випускаючи об’ємні протуберанці майже намацального диму, не обійшлось і без fame fatale. Бойових сцен тут не дуже багато, але всі промальовані від душі, наприклад, ефектна бійка в палаці розваг “Великий світ”, де Чорний хрест віртуозно використовує як зброю підручні засоби – голки для акупунктури, дубинки жонглера, факели хіроманта, велетенський макет китової акули. Дійсно несподівано виглядає фінал, але про це тут не будемо, щоб уникнути серйозного спойлера.

А краще поговорімо про малюнок Денніс Калеро. Тут все не надто деталізовано, але пречудово передаються тіні , є кілька хороших панорам і архітектури, багато стрибків і силуетів Чорного Хреста в різноманітних ракурсах. Дещо страждає міміка, певні персонажі не мають сталого образу обличчя і чомусь змінюються від панелі до панелі. Не можна не похвалити суперову обкладинку, на котрій багато прихованих натяків.

Щодо цікавинок з робочого процесу, то ви навіть не уявляєте, з чим я запарився найбільше. Бачили ту мапу у першому розділі?


Багато хто її міг і не помітити, а я витратив цілий день на вирізання шматочків зображення з неї, щоб адекватно оформити переклад. Здавалося б така дрібничка, просто мапа, яка показує нам Євразію, в якій стільки назв і яка не грає особливої ролі у сюжеті, а скоріше просто виконує функцію переходу між сценами. Можна було б і залишити в оригіналі. Але ні, це не наш шлях, весь англійський текст має бути підданий тотальній українізації. Тож довелося уважно перекладати всі географічні назви, щоб нічого не проґавити. І там же заховався ще один цікавий аспект. Адже транслітераці�� азійських слів і назв українською та англійською дуже різняться. А оскільки я далеко не перекладач з китайською, звичайно довелося підтверджувати кожну назву ґуґлом. А річ у тому, що в 80-90-х роках минулого сторіччя чимало азійських країн, аби остаточно розірвати всі зв’язки з колоніальним минулим, перейменовували деякі свої міста або домагалися, аби написання їх назв англійською було більш відповідним до їхніх мов (такий собі BeijingNotPeking). Але події коміксу відбуваютсья у 30-х, а значить і писатися там українською вони мають так, як писалися тоді. І Вікіпедія тут не завжди допомагала. Довелося шукати старі азійські україномовні мапи УНР чи УРСР. Одним словом, розбиратися в цій мапі довелося чи не стільки ж, скільки в перепетіях сюжету та лору гри. І це було дуже цікаво.

З цікавих алюзій і секретів – на одній зі сторінок, відвідувач бару дуже нагадує агента 007.


Один із важливих персонажів сидить в позі четвертого аркана “Імператор”.


Поява Хреста з тіні це алюзія на Ламонта Кренстона, ще одного віджиланте з капелюхом, червоним шарфом і парою пістолетів


Комікс залишає відчуття недомовленості, адже й у кінці написано “Далі буде…” Все ж, як розгортатимуться наступні арки важко сказати, адже далі акцент буде перенесено більше на Дарія Ґіфта, котрий мені подобається менше, ніж Чорний Хрест. Але потенціал у серії є, і великий.

Видання від Tuos Comics вийшло приємним – добре пошиття, що важливо для розворотів (ґаттер лос відсутній повністю), якісні фарби та папір, корінець зі шрифтом і стилістикою як і в попередніх коміксів серії. Окремо треба похвалити переклад – над серією працює Денис Скорбатюк і чує себе тут, як риба у воді – не тільки розуміє і перекладає пісні, але й вкрапляє де потрібно цікаві слівця, як то “бабай”, не знайшов жодного русизму чи хибодруку, що є заслугою і редактора.

Рекомендую дану мальовану історію для прочитанням перш за все фанатам серії Кредо Асасина, а також шанувальникам нуару і старих-добрих бойовиків.

Darius Gift loses his father after his templar allies kill him for betraying the order. He must cleanse his family name by being sent to China where the order has become chaotic. His mission begins on the wrong foot when Darius has his suitcase stolen by a woman named Roo and encounters the mysterious man named Black Cross who killed his father.

The templar leaders have split their efforts into keeping the groups of interest in Shanghai under control. Unfortunately, the ensuing chaos is not appreciated by the inner sanctum of the templar order who wants China united. Black Cross is sent to China to investigate the criminal underworld, while Darius tries a more diplomatic approach with the nationalistic leader Chiang Kai-Shek. The two band together.

Chiang's army enters the city. He has chosen to break all his past alliances, with the templars and the Communists. Ironically, Darius was supposed to bring him an offer to become the Shanghai Grand Master, along with the ring that gives him the title - Darius's father's ring. Upon learning this, Darius turns on Black Cross too, killing him. This makes the Animus lose sync in the present. The current day templars must find another descendant to continue searching for the artifact known as Koh-I-Noor.

A slightly confusing story with more obtuse art than its Assassin's Creed main title predecessor, "Templars V1: Black Cross" presents a story of shadow and intrigue set in 1920's China during General Chiang's Nationalist Army uprising. A up and coming Templar is sent by British Templar High Council to deliver a package. It gets stolen and he spends the rest of the book trying to get it back.
Also, a Templar killer-man (I refuse to call them an Assassin for identifications sake) named Black Cross, is searching for..... I'm not really sure exactly, but he sure kills a lot of people, including the British guy's father.
At the end, when Black Cross dies (killed by the British guy in revenge) and has "desynchronization", it is revealed that the modern day Templars are searching for the "koh-i-noor", a powerful Piece of Eden. They also reveal that it might be time to renew the title of "Black Cross" for a modern Templar.
Not sure if I will continue with the Templar side of the comic series.

This was nice well contained story about a Black Cross during the 20s in Shanghai. As well as the impact of what he was working on. I had a few issues with it though as always. It ended quite suddenly and didn't have a very satisfying resolution for the "past story".

But the Art was great, the characters were surprisingly deep and it was enjoyably to read a book from the Templars point of view where they aren't all monsters.

An enjoyable Assassin's Creed set almost entirely in 1927 London and Shanghai during Chiang Kai-Shek's revolution, then a little bit at the end in the present with Juhani Otso Berg. The Black Cross is kind of like Templar Internal Affairs. The story's highly enjoyable and the art is great. The only downside is that having already read the Assassin's Creed Uprising series, it feels slightly anti-climactic as this "Templars" series leads into that.

Overall I did enjoy this book! It focuses on China in the late 1920s

The story itself is competently told over 4 issues. It doesn’t overstay its welcome, it isn’t too grandiose, and it’s just a really enjoyable story. Some parts did feel quite contrived but it was interesting seeing how this comic intertwined itself with history.

The idea of the character ‘Black Cross’ being a Templar ghost story is really awesome. The character himself has this wonderful storyline. He isn’t overpowered but can still put up a reasonable fight. His backstory and guilt is also something that is executed incredibly well.

The main character is also really interesting, somebody trying to restore honour to his family after his father squandered. He has this kind of character arc and the relationship between himself and Black Cross was fun to see, even if it is only brief.

If you’re a fan of Assassin’s Creed and want a Templar-centric story I think you’ll definitely have a good time with this one.

One of the frustrating things about "Assassin's Creed" as a series is that it's meant to have villains (the Templars) with sympathetic motives, but very rarely are they anything but really selfish, power-hungry douchebags. Which, okay, yeah, an organization trying to take over the world is naturally going to attract and develop those types, but you'd think they'd have a better screening process. Across the series you have some Templars who are sympathetic and complex, but mostly they're just... jerks.

The idea of the "Black Cross" was an attempt to really address that by introducing the Templar quality control: the guy who kills corrupt Templars for staining the Templar name with their selfishness. Answerable only to the Inner Sanctum, the Black Cross is like the Templars' in-house Assassin.

Also! This has a cool setting. Shanghai in the late 1920's, a part of history where momentous things are going on, but is probably unfamiliar to most English-speaking readers.

It's a cool little comic, and I don't think you'd need too much information of the overall story to be able to understand it (except for the ending, I guess). I don't think it's that great of an introduction to the series though.

Antes que nada, hay que haber jugado algunos juegos de Assassin’s Creed. Es una historia sobre lealtad a una organización y un misterio que te deja en el aire si no entiendes el canon desde el inicio. Y como yo no he jugado ninguno de los juegos, el libro no corrió la milla extra para envolverme. Libros con este número de páginas normalmente los terminó en una sentada, pero este, es como que no quería ser leído. Mucho del arte de Calero, su uso de la luz y los colores, fue lo que me mantuvo despierto, pero el guión de Van Lente carecía de intensidad (de nuevo, al menos para mi porque no he jugado los juegos), una carrera de un sitio a otro por buscar un MacGuffin que al final te deja en un final que abre más preguntas y respuestas. En mi opinión debería ser lo opuesto, el final de un volumen debe responder todo lo que se planteó al principio, y dejándote deseando más. No puedo leer el volumen 2 por eso, no son preguntas que de verdad me interese responder.

A fast paced and engaging comic that was a surprisingly good addition to the Assassin's Creed lore. The story revolves around Black Cross, a Templar assassin that keeps his fellow Templars from abusing their power. Highly recommended for fans of the games, but can also be enjoyed by comic book readers who are new to the world.

I actually liked this better than the "main" AC comic, and it does a better job of portraying a (theoretically) morally upstanding Templar than Rogue had. Totally immersing the story in the historical era was a good choice, and makes the shift to present day more dramatic.
