Devendranath Tagore lived from 1817 to 1905. The Tagore family are a well known Brahmin family who have had leaders in politics. arts. literature and business. He was born into a well off family. At an early age he has visions and hears what he perceives to be the voice of God so he devotes his life to achieving this enlightenment again. He has trouble removing himself from his family's business ventures but is confident that God will guide him in his journey., so he says. He takes issue with the Hindu Vedas as they are currently understood and the custom of Sati. He wants to end caste discrimination but the Hindu hard core won't hear of it. He loves the Upanishads and re-writes some of the more worthy ones into a new book, the Brahmo Dharma, you can find it for free on the net. It is a huge success and he becomes famous as a Maharshi, a learned scholar. Most people want to meet him and have him stay for awhile for free. So, in this book he discusses his love of God and how God is everywhere but mostly inside us. The travels throughout India are interesting and he does get a word from God here and there to keep up his spirits. A somewhat superficial tale into a man's search for truth while enjoying lavish meals. A bit too much praise for himself I think..this is an autobiography. He doesn't mention his job as a zamindar (land owner) when he had zero mercy for tenants who did not pay their rent. He was known to be a harsh and devious zamindar when he was put in charge of his dads holdings. I enjoyed reading it for the most part but I don't believe the man's motives were as spiritual he says. Read about this guy from some other sources and decide yourself.
