When you hear about Sunstone the first and main thing people will tell you is that it's a book about BDSM, then they will also tell you that it's a female/female romance, also it's written by a dude. So yeah, this comic, the execution of Ally and Lisa's relationship could have gone so wrong, I'm actually amazed at how beautifully written the characters and the relationships were. The subject alone can be quite tricky to explore. It could have been so crass, so vulgar. But BDSM is not really the main focus, yeah there are lots of graphic scenes (although at the same time it was quite "restrained") and explanations about why people love it, but the most important thing in here it's the depiction of friendships and romances, and of human nature. Anxieties, regrets, insecurities and love.
Yeah, it mainly follows people into Dom/Sub dynamic, but the story explores getting to know people, making new friendships or falling in love. It's also about trusting, trusting yourself and others, being unafraid to be yourself.
I giggled a lot because the dialogue is so relatable, even if the scenarios are not. Ally is a nerd, Lisa is a mess (well, both are tbh). I freaking loved Alan and his humour, he's the best and also the most annoying friend. Then you have the supporting characters that are so distinctive and well-written.
It felt like reading a contemporary novel, or watching a TV show, it just felt like real friends messing around, carefully testing the limits of a new found friendship, with some sex scenes in between, a lot of them just funny.

Tbh, I wasn't expecting how charming this would be, how well-intentioned, I'm just happy that this comic explores healthy relationships, where trust and consent are so present, and how even when the story is about two fetishists, it's just a slice-of-life kind of story. There's no shaming, no mocking, just a fun story trying to portray real people.
I really enjoyed it if you can't already tell.

4.5 stars. Ths book reminds me in many ways of the classic "Strangers in Paradise" series.

What could have been a prurient, titilating tale becomes so much more in the hands of this talented group of creators!

The gorgeous art by Stjepan Seijuc draws the reader in immediately, while the story serves to keep the reader enthralled.

Yes, this title is not for everyone, as it does prominently feature lesbian sex & BDSM, but that's actually just a small part of the big picture, as this title is surprisingly earnest and character-driven.

Sunstone is a magnificent graphic novel that demonstrates what the healthiest side of the BDSM world looks like. This is what kink should be, and although it is definitely a safe and loving environment it is still very not suitable for younger audiences.

BDSM relationships got a poularity boost from the absolutely abhorent Fifty Shades of Grey. I cannot tell you every way that the relationship popularized in these books and movies is toxic. It is not a representation of the true kink community and may very well have put the lives of many young women at risk of irreversable physical and emotional harm. And no, I am not exaggerating.

WARNING: DUE TO THE EXPLICIT NATURE OF THIS BOOK THIS REVIEW CONTAINS GRAPHIC SEXUAL DISCUSSION. IF THAT MAKES YOU UNCOMFORTABLE THIS BOOK AND MY REVIEW AREN’T FOR YOU, READER DISCRETION ADVISED.

”This is the story of how I met the love of my life, that one person that compl... WAIT, DON’T LEAVE YET! THIS BOOK HAS LOTS OF HOT LESBIAN BONDAGE SEX!! Good.... that got your attention...”
So I was expecting a silly, fun romance story with very little plot and a lot of sexy fetish stuff. Guess I got a masterpiece romance story with quite a bit of plot and a lot of sexy fetish stuff.

What’s it about?
Lisa is a writer into BDSM and the fantasy of being submissive but has always been too afraid of what people would think if they knew, so she anonymously writes sexy stories on a fetish website. Alison is a rich nerdy woman into BDSM, she even has a lot of gear and sexy outfits for it and the fantasy of being dominant but hasn’t found anyone and goes on the same website that Lisa writes her stories on with the username Allycat. Lisa and Allycat meet through the sexier part of the internet, become virtual friends and decide to meet up for sexy fun as friends and nothing more especially since they don’t think they’re that into other girls... but they discover they may be wrong about that and may be slowly becoming more than friends.

Why it gets 5 stars:
The story is surprisingly great! With a book like this I need plot because otherwise it just feels like porn and while the plot here is sexual it is still a plot that is surprisingly more engaging than it sounds at first and I greatly enjoyed it.
The artwork is absolutely beautiful! So I’ve seen the artist’s work around the internet and it’s one of the main reasons I decided to read this. It’s even more beautiful with the context of a sweet romance story!
description
The characters are very interesting and well written. I especially relate to the main 2 characters. I relate to Lisa since I sometimes get nervous about people being judgmental over things I like (though I have gotten a little more comfortable, I mean I’m admitting I’m giving a BDSM comic 5-stars) and am beginning my author journey! I also relate to Ally because of her slightly negative moods despite being successful and being a big nerd! It’s impossible for me to not fall in love with this book’s characters and their authentic personalities!
This book is often very funny. Expect lots of quippy dialogue and humorous situations.
The pace works perfectly.
This book is not as predictable as I expected. There’s some suspenseful scenarios here.
The romance in this book is too damn cute! Seriously, this romance could not be cuter!
On a slightly more shallow note this book is sexy as fuck! Okay so there’s the obvious sexual themes that are often hot especially if you like BDSM (since I enjoy imagining myself in scenarios from either side, being dominant or submissive I loved it). Not to mention Ally and Lisa are both added to my mental list of comic book crushes now, they are so fucking pretty! Seeing 2 absolutely stunning girls in uncensored scenarios that I fantasize about, I don’t think another work of literature has turned me on as much as this!
The storytelling is very well written! It also makes the story better and even cuter!
One might not expect important positive messages to be found in a comic like this but surely enough there are some. Most notably about being yourself and not worrying what others think of you.
The ending is nice.
There’s some good bonus material about the making of this comic. Usually I don’t read all of that stuff but this time for some reason it got my attention this time.

Overall:
Fuck, this book is amazing! I went in expecting silly, mindless, sexy fun but instead got well written, engaging, sexy fun. It feels strange recommending this to people because what the fuck am I meant to say? “Hey, read this lesbian bondage comic book”? Here’s the thing: it is much more than porn. It is a legitimately interesting and well written tale of cute romance between 2 amazing characters with great humor, stunning artwork, an important message and more! It’s so cute and amazing and holy shit, I can’t find all the right words just quit wasting your time with my review for it and read this fucking comic, people!

Our heroine Lisa likes bondage, and has known that for years – but never had the companion to come close to the trust needed to use it in mutual sex sessions. The first person she finds with ideas of being her dom is Ally, who reads her online porn fiction and applies. But hey, this is just sex, and our hero is straight, n'est-ce pas?

Well, I was a bit sniffy about this until I read that the author is very much into BDSM and such scenes, and has been so, alongside his wife, for years (I vaguely remember reading one of her books with a fruity core years ago, but didn't know the background of this). The problem was I remained a little sniffy throughout – the book obviously has the lascivious, teen-pleasing erotica side, even if the full-on sex is never present, and I couldn't quite get round the feel of this as being just smut. One issue, as a read, is that the author has put so much interior monologuing into his pages, to show that yes he can write a real woman and yes a real woman can be a sub in the scene, and yes a real woman who thinks she's straight can have non-sexual feelings of love for another woman, but methinks he doth protest too much. The psychological minutiae are there to prove his literary correctness, surely – they don't once make the pages any easier to enjoy. And we're all scoffing when at one point Lisa compares herself to a written character. Honest.

This being a three-in-one, we get the original set-up of LisAlly, but the second book is a dirge, almost, dragging darker sides of the kink scene to things for little benefit. The third book is even looser, bringing subsidiary characters into the role of narrator, and trying to develop a sense of humour, at which it all seriously fails. It then remembers to progress the main relationship, and does it – yes, of course – far too wordily. All in all, the first book was an easy three stars, but the lack of entertaining progression from there certainly knocks it down a little. As has been said countless times about the bits between the sex in erotica/porn, too much of this is a sheer waste of time, making the photoreal artwork when it comes even more frustratingly misspent.

Queer…Kinky…Fluffy…

I’m genuinely in love with this graphic novel. The characters, the sex, the safe BDSM practises, the art…I’m at a loss for words. I’ve always wanted a graphic novel that wasn’t just weird fetish-y porn, and this one delivered to the high heavens.

The way BDSM was portrayed was a breath of fresh air. It was done delicately and thorough, unlike a lot of other books/comics that try to portray it, but ends up falling very flat and unsafe.

If you want a graphic novel that’s got great character growth, is hot as hell, and also has you laughing, I highly recommend this.

CW: graphic erotica

I have to admit, I was prejudiced and wanted to give zero chances to a NSFW graphic novel written by a man featuring a sapphic couple dabbling in BDSM.
I was soooo wrong, thank you average Goodreads rating and top reviews for convincing me because you're right, you are absolutely right. This novel reads like a safe space for vulnerable thoughts and topics regarding sexualities typically viewed as taboos.

Stjepan Šejić's art style is one of my favourites among comic artists too, so this was such a joy to read.

This book is so great. Tells the story of the beginnings of a relationship between two really likable characters, with all the anxiousness and excitement that comes with meeting someone new and falling in love. Plus, it shows what BDSM is and isn't, from multiple points of view. And the art is really excellent. I'm very excited to start book 2 to see what Ally, Lisa and friends get up to next.

I really loved this! Both Lisa and Ally are wonderful and sweet and I am emotionally invested in both of them a a a a a a 😭💖
On a more serious note, this comic does a wonderful job portraying what BDSM actually is, compared to the mainstream misconceptions, further fuelled by certain.... sloppy misrepresentations in popular media.
The author certainly did his homework.
And all the horny aside, this is also just a really sweet little story about two women meeting, bonding (no pun intended), slowly falling for each other and dealing with all the anxieties and gay panics that ensue.
Also, loved his art style in Harleen, love it even more now!

TL;DR i'm lowkey curious now

Short elevator pitch review: "50 shades of grey, eat your heart out".

Longer review: This comic and it's premise could very easily have ended up as cheep, pandering and as blatant fanservice to a stereotypical comic demographic. I mean, one of the first lines (from the narrator) is "WAIT DON'T LEAVE YET. THIS BOOK HAS LOTS OF HOT LESBIAN BONDAGE SEX". but it's both so much more and at the same time a pretty basic love story, with very strong characterizations.

It really is quite cool that Image publish everything from high concept "romeo and juliet space opera" and "weird west sci-fi game of thrones" and "Cthulhu noir" to what is essentially a love story, without conventional story structure (it was originally published as a webcomic) set in the real world and without resorting to the fantastical. Sunstone is filled with gorgeous artwork, funny as hell dialogue, endearing characters and yes a fair bit of sex but it never feels forced and it never fells like nudity for nuditys sake. It really is a very special comic. This, feels a lot more accurate and earnest and that Stjepan actually knows what the fuck he's writing about compared to *THAT* book that's also about BDSM. Sunstone is a adorable lovely comic, that happens to have a lot of nudity and sex in it.

(No Spoilers) I’m not sure how to rate this, as I didn’t really enjoy it, but I recognize that it was very well done.

First off, the art is gorgeous, which is why I picked this up in the first place. I’ve seen this artists work elsewhere and absolutely adore his style, so that is why I’m giving it three stars, despite the story not interesting me at all. Why is that?

Just my personal preference, but BDSM isn’t my thing, nor do pure romance stories hold my interest, so there’d need to be a bit more meat on the bones story-wise to keep my interest.

Maybe if there were some SciFi or Fantasy (we’ll, non-sexual Fantasy) it could have drawn me in, but as it was this was just a little too straight forward softcore porn/silly romance for my taste.

Stunning artwork and a great story about the intersection of friendship, sex, and love. This book is about sex yes, but it is also so much more. Ally and Lisa are three dimensional women who are at times funny, strong, weak, confused, brave, and more. I love that we get to see so many different sides to their lives.

Plus Stjepan's artwork is sensual and gorgeous. And the behind the scenes story of how Sunstone came to be is an interesting read.

I remember reading this waaaaay back in the day on DA, and I this re-read to be a very similar experience, I enjoyed it about the same but with the same concerns. For the most part my biggest issue is how bogged down the story gets with the internal narration. I feel like the inner monologue, past the initial explanation about BDSM and the community, really slows things down. Once those thought boxes start to focus on the relationships and characters they lose their shine, they slow down the pace of the story, and it becomes an issue of telling me about these relationships instead of just showing me. However, I get that this comic wasn't very long running, and Šejić published these page by page, so he had to fit a LOT of character and relationship development into each page. It was probably easier to just tell us, but I wish he could have taken more time. However, what this comic does show is beautiful bodies, well designed outfits, and gorgeous artwork. The characters are great, and the relationship between Ally and Lisa is really adorable and sexy. But seriously, why are there so many redheads?

Sunstone is probably the best romance I've read. I do wonder if a lot of the attraction to the story comes from it disguising the romance element through the veneer of erotica. It stealthy sneaks up on a reader in that sense. Perhaps I read more romance this wouldn't have resonated so well.

I think the big caveat is that it is about BDSM and is fairly graphic. I'm not in that subculture but very much enjoyed the story. The art is great.

This graphic novel is really cute so far! It's not too graphic, and it's not a sensationalised portrayal of bdsm in relationships imo, it's pretty informational on things like safety, consent, and false assumptions. Most of all I'm liking it because it's a really sweet sapphic romance though, and I love seeing the relationships and friendships between characters develop!! Excited to read the next few volumes.

This made me laugh at several points but also care about the characters a lot more than I expected. And the art is absolutely beautiful. Of course the subject matter is not for everyone, what with a looot of nudity in this series, but somehow, the more you read, the less the sex aspect seems to be the main focus. And I sort of liked that. I guess I will have to read the second one to see how things change as there were quite a few hints what might happen in the future already...

A comic about intimacy and friendship.

I loved each drawing and liked even more the fact that it's so far away from pornography, it is sensual, for sure, but never explicit.

Got me thinking how each and one of us has their own interets and there is no need to judge someone for what they like or don't.

Burn baby burn!!!

Its unique & captivating storyline, spectacular in its complexity, fluidity & intensity creates a very compelling & entertaining book. With a nice flowing effortless progression, engaging narrative incorporating such formidably vulnerable & passionately flawed characters made it an easy read.

Continuing with a good, entertaining story with interesting characters & hot sex scenes extremely well written… your only thought is—What's gonna come next?

I first came across this story when browsing for things to read from the Image Comics library. When I first read the premise and saw the artwork I immediately passed on it, to me it pretty much looked like smut for people who wanted to read pornography disguised has something a bit more high profile. Something akin to the ”Fifty Shades” books.
Then, recently, I once again scrolled through the Image Comics sale on Comixology and saw this at about half price. I had to check if it was really worth a go, and saw that it had great ratings and rave reviews both there and especially here on Goodreads. So alright, why not check it out?
I found this to be very disappointing. I read that the story, for BDSM enthusiasts, has a realistic depiction of the fetish, but for me it just felt as voyeristic as i first suspected. I can’t help but compare it to the comics ”Sex” or ”Sex Criminals”, which to me manage to combine the sexual nature with an interesting plot in a more satisfying way. Especially ”Sex Criminals” is very much what ”Sunstone” aims to be, but the quirkiness doesn’t work as well for this story since it’s more obviously rooted in reality.

I’m still struggling to put my finger on exactly why I found the tone of the book to be a bit smug at times. I think it suffers a bit from thinking it’s ~*quirkyyy - the central group of characters always refer to themselves as nerds or outsiders, and they’re constantly being teased by their “normie” friends for being “pervs” (why is this even a topic of conversation to begin with?). They feel judged but it also strokes their egos to think they’re better and more special than everyone else. Contrast that with the fact this book is just written by a man who likes red headed lesbians in fetish gear. It imagines an insane deviance within its pages that simply isn’t there.

Still, worth a read I think! It’s a cute little book with very likable characters.

The love story was sweet, but I have to admit, there is a LOT of dialogue in a single frame in a lot of instances in this GN. The erotic bit of the book, from what I gleaned, would be good for open minded fans of 50 Shades. Frankly though, if you're reading erotica, you are already open minded, usually. Decent. 3 stars for the overall feel of it, though I wasn't personally all that into it. Honestly, I sped read. But it would prob be the thing some people would really dig.

Eh, I was underwhelmed. Too much expository dialogue and most of the characters lacked any dimension. And where’s the conflict? Everything in a brand-new relationship is supposedly perfect for three whole volumes? The most we get is Ally has a secret trauma that isn’t explained very well??

I was so looking forward to reading this but it ended up just ok for me. I ended up skipping the narration about half way through and only reading the dialogue, and still I was left wanting. I just wanted more sexy time and less description about the lifestyle and such.

The book makes clear from the beginning that this is a love story. The opening shots, the bits and pieces and references along the way all make it clear it's going to end well. The point of the story isn't "will they or won't they" or Unresolved Romantic Tension. It's how things happened and the telling of them. It's focused on the characters as people, working hard to stay on the side of the story and characters mattering more than the vehicle for the story and also the stated goal of people at the start -- friends with benefits, with BDSM. And that is very much appreciated, as it undermines objectification, etc.

That said, I am always mildly wary of stories (obviously, written by writers) about writers writing more stories (often with references to writing). The line about how this story was about people, not characters, and thus is messier than a story... well, it feels a bit like a house of cards. And sometimes that element could work for me. Other times it didn't work so well for me. (the in text notes about 'this person is really important to our story' etc... became a bit too abundant in my opinion. Like hey, you are PUTTING THEM IN THE STORY, I would hope it has a purpose, that they matter in some way). But that's a personal preference. So if that's a huge annoyance for you, be aware of that going in. If you don't care, ignore this whole paragraph.

I also wonder if this is still coming out because having finished Book One (of Two, that I can see thus far) the story doesn't feel halfway done. It was a fun read, sometimes clunky, and absolutely chock full of redheads (seriously, they're far more commonplace than any other hair color). And it's nice to see more queer rep that can be varied.
